The BT&F tournament series is here! What YOU should watch for

By Brandon Jones
Staff Writer

As I did with the girls, it is now time for the stories to keep an eye on as we prepare for the 2006 boys track & field tournament series. The outdoor leader boards are now closed, and it is time to put up or shut up.

Here is what to keep an eye on throughout the next two and a half weeks:

4×800 meter relay
This is one of the best events to watch during the tournament series because of the “where did that come from?” factor. In no other race of any kind (relay or individual) do you see the massive time drops that you see in the 4×800 meter relay. Thus far, only three teams (Warren Central, Indianapolis Chatard, and Bloomington South) have broken the 8:00 barrier. But that will all change in a HURRY. Chatard follows Brebeuf all the way through the tournament series. Elkhart Memorial and Wawasee will see each other in the northeast, as will Carmel and Zionsville in the stateâ??s center. Who else deserves to be in this conversation? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Pipkin, Wims, and â?¦ Crawford?
Though they are not seeded 1-2-3 on the leader boards, most people believe that these three sprinters will vie for the titles at 100 and 200 meters. With the performances of Shane Crawford of Winamac, he HAS to be included in this conversation. I quoted one person as saying, “This is the fastest kid I have ever seen.” Maybe Devin Pipkin and Scott Wims are not a sure thing at 100 meters. However, with nationally recognized performances, Pipkin and Wims MUST be the favorites at 200 meters. Who will come out on top? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Bryce Brown: A sure thing or not?
The Evansville Harrison junior sees very little competition until the tournament series, so it is tough to tell where he stands entering mid-May. He has posted top times, but nowhere near the performances we saw in Bloomington last June. Is he vulnerable? Or will he once again prove that worthy candidates such as Joey Hodges (Warren Central) and Chris Brautzsch (Fort Wayne Wayne) are a step below? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Fresh vs. not fresh
Who will enter the 1600 meters on fresh legs, and who will be coming off a relay leg? That may very well decide the champion at 1600 this spring. Andy Weatherford (Greencastle) will be fresh and is the defending state champion, but recent times thrown down by Adam Green (Franklin Central), Deâ??Sean Turner (Warren Central), Adam Martin (Chesterton), and Adrien Dannemiller (Martinsville) among others have the Greencastle junior looking over his shoulder. Who will it be? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Wide-open 400 field
Weeks ago, Lafayette Jeffersonâ??s Myles Robinson was the story of the state for his early season performances at 400 meters. But recently, other times have been coming in that can rival that of the Broncho senior. After his subpar Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, the door is now wide open for other contenders. With it come from the North (Michael Koza â??? Lowell), Central Indiana (Bryant Kent â??? North Central, Keenan Hall â??? Ben Davis, Clayton Wilson â??? Southport), or South (Randy Baize â??? Evansville Reitz)? Or will someone else step up and shock the field? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

North vs. South at 800 meters
Patrick McKinney of Evansville Mater Dei has the stateâ??s fastest time at 800 meters way down in southwestern Indiana. Eugene Ellis of Gary West is the proven commodity from way up in northwestern Indiana. Filling in the gaps are athletes in the middle, such as Dan Stockberger (McCutcheon) and Stephen Price (Avon). I have long called this the most open race as the majority of last yearâ??s field is now in college. Who will it be? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Can Brock go 2 for 2?
Brock Hagerman won his much-anticipated individual state championship this past fall on the cross country course. With the fastest time in the state entering the tournament series, will the Pendleton Heights senior finish his career with a state championship on the track at 3200 meters? If he does, he will have earned it as teammate Cole Hardacre and plenty of others (Bobby Moldovan of Fort Wayne Northrop, Adrien Dannemiller of Martinsville, Adam Green of Franklin Central, Justin Roeder of Hamilton Southeastern) will make it a challenge for Brock. Who will be crowned champion? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Indy versus Northeast in the 4×400
I say this time and time again, but Indianapolis and Fort Wayne teams usually dominate the podium in the meetâ??s last track event, the 4×400 meter relay. And 2006 should be no different as Northrop, North Central, Ben Davis, Warren Central, and Southport look to be the favorites entering the tournament series. Am I the only one drooling over a fast heat that would match Scott Wims (Northrop), Bryant Kent (North Central), Keenan Hall (Ben Davis), Joey Hodges (Warren Central), and Clayton Wilson (Southport) on the anchor leg? Can someone else step up and steal the show? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

24 and change?
Keenan Hall of Ben Davis has dominated the long jump in 2006. Will he continue to do so now that “prime time” has arrived? With last yearâ??s All-State field waiting in the wings and many other capable athletes, it will take a super-human effort to leave Bloomington as the champion. Who will be king of the pit? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Exciting high jump field
This has been one of the best events to follow all season long as the heights just keep getting higher and higher. The stateâ??s best jumpers are spread out, so it will be the first time that many of the top contenders (outside of Fort Wayne and northeastern Indiana, that is) see each other. Will we see that super jump of 7 feet? How many athletes will hit the auto qualify? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

The throws
This has been a great year for the throws, and many feel the state record in the shot put is in serious jeopardy. Will it be Eric Werksey of Seymour or Ben Stephen of Union County? Both? These two have established themselves as the shot put favorites entering the tournament series â??? will it stay that way? The discus, meanwhile, has reached new heights in â??06 as throws of 170-plus feet have become the new standard. With a handful of athletes (excluding Werksey) separated by a mere 10 to 12 feet, this is also a wide-open field. Could we see a mark over 200 feet? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Central Indiana vs. Northeast Indiana
This time in the pole vault, Jeremy Brading (Brownsburg) and Hunter Hall (Homestead) are your pre-meet favorites â??? each has cleared the 16-foot barrier. However, there are many other worthy candidates that could surprise as this event will approach new heights at the state meet in Bloomington. What a success story it would be for Fort Wayne Canterbury freshman phenom Corey Shank to steal the title. Can it happen? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Is the team race for second?
Warren Centralâ??s boys have dominated the state of Indiana thus far in 2006. Can it continue through the tournament series. Even further, can the Warriors challenge the state meet record of 86 points? It will take a monumental effort from teams such as Fort Wayne Northrop and Ben Davis to upset the favorite Warriors. Can it happen?Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Starting Friday morning, expect to see the Top 10 times per event as was done on the girls side. As always, stay tuned to HoosierAuthority.com throughout the track & field tournament series for ALL your coverage.

Jeffersonville to name field after legendary Red Devil coach

The
baseball diamond at Jeffersonville
will officially become Don Poole Field at ceremonies May 20. The
legendary Poole coached the Red Devils for 17 seasons, compiling a
career record of 418-152.

His teams won 12 sectionals, six regionals, and three
semistate titles during that span.

The naming
will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday between Jeffersonvilleâ??s games against Bloomington
South and Bloomington North. Many of Pooleâ??s
former coaches and players are expected to return for the festivities.

Road Trip Journal2: History, tradition the bywords of Round 2

By Mike
McGraw
Executive Director

When you
head to southwestern Indiana,
there are two things you know you will get a healthy dose of: history and
basketball. Our second road trip to talk to Indiana
athletic directors, which started in Vincennes,
didnâ??t disappoint in either category.

We planned
to start the jaunt by attending the long-awaited baseball game between Class 3A
rivals Vincennes Lincoln and Jasper. At the time, they were the only two
unbeaten teams remaining in the state. The game was also their first matchup
since last yearâ??s sectional fiasco â?? the infamous â??helmet game.â? Unfortunately,
Mother Nature had different ideas, and the game was rained out.

I had to
settle, instead, for dinner and a tour of Vincennes
sports history with venerable Vincennes
Sun-Commercial
sportswriter Dave Staver. Understand two things: The man
knows where to find a good steak, and he is a walking encyclopedia of the last
40 years of Vincennes
sports.

The highlight
of the tour was a stop at the Clark
Middle School gymnasium.
Why, you ask? Because that gym also happens to be the storied Adams Coliseum,
home of the Alices
for more than 40 years. Imagine being a seventh-grader and playing your home
games on a floor emblazoned with state championship markings. Iâ??m wagering that
is a good way to keep the tradition of Vincennes
basketball alive.

Speaking
of which, it should be alive and very healthy next season â?? the Alices will be loaded. In
my discussion with Vincennes Athletic Director Dave Hill, I found out a couple more
pieces of history. For example, Lincoln
has a rich tradition in boys swimming.

It is less
than a 20-mile drive to Washington,
where I next went to visit both the Hatchet House and the Birdcage. The Hatchet
House is, of course, the wonderfully unique home of Washington
High School, but the Birdcage is
equally as famous in Southwest Indiana. The
home of the Washington Catholic Cardinals for more than 70 years, it is also
the home of the famous â??bathroom play.â? Donâ??t know what that is? Wait a couple
of weeks and we will fill you in.

Perhaps
the most amazing part of this trip was my conversation with Barr-Reeve AD and
basketball coach Bryan Hughes. Barr-Reeve is a high school of about 200
students. In the past 32 years, the school has had 31 winning seasons in boys
basketball â?? and the horrible outcast in that time was an 11-12 season. Think
thatâ??s amazing? Check this out. In the past 27 years, the volleyball program at
Barr-Reeve has NEVER had a losing season! That is what you call tradition.

A trip
through Barr-Reeve
High School is like a
walk through a museum. Literally every wall in the school is crowded with
photos of Viking sports teams. Hughes believes there is a photo of every team
to have ever represented Barr-Reeve. And heâ??s quick to point out that even
though the pictures are right there in the middle of school traffic on a daily
basis, there has never been any vandalism or carelessness with any of them.

Folks,
Barr-Reeve is a pretty special place.

Next week,
I am heading toward the Ohio River. I am going
to be in New Albany and Jeffersonville on the same day. Thatâ??s a
little like visiting the Hatfields and the McCoys on the same day and living to
tell about it.

Hoosier Crossroads Conference: No. 9 Noblesville upsets second-ranked Harrison in talent-rich meet

By Jeff Washburn
jwashburn@journalandcourier.com

Occasionally, an athletic event’s outcome defies statistics
and logic. Take, for example, the Hoosier Crossroads Conference boys golf
tournament May 15 at Coyote Crossing.

Playing on its home course, second-ranked Harrison (West Lafayette) posted
five sub-80 rounds and placed all five starters on the all-conference team. Yet
the Raiders finished only fourth in the nine-team event, won by ninth-ranked
Noblesville with 310.

“You definitely would be nuts had you said that this
morning before we teed off,” said Harrison’s
Adam Hillsamer, one of four Raiders who shot 79. “But there were some low
scores. A 71 today (by Brownsburg’s medalist Seth Fair) is awesome.

“We all played all right, but none of us played
really well. We needed somebody to shoot 74 or 73. We’re all capable of
shooting 72 or 71 on this course. Nothing was bad, but nothing was
spectacular.”

What is somewhat spectacular is the Hoosier Crossroads
Conference’s boys golf tradition. Members Lafayette Jefferson, Noblesville, and
Zionsville have won eight collective state championships, including Zionsville’s
2004 title. And Noblesville was second in the 2005 state tournament.

At Coyote Crossing, Zionsville took second with 311, Avon
fired a 312, and Harrison was fourth at 314.
Lafayette Jeff shot 330 to place seventh, and McCutcheon was ninth with 372.

“You have four teams in this conference who are
capable of shooting 310 on almost any day,” said Christian Mathew, who led
Harrison with a 77. “This just happened
to be Noblesville’s day.

“They played well. We played poorly, but we had five
scores under 80, so we can’t be too mad about that. I thought a 312 would win
this.”

Jeff sophomore Brian Wolpert, who shot 81, studied the
scoreboard with amazement, especially considering rain pelted the course for
almost four hours Monday.

“We probably have the strongest golf conference in
the state,” Wolpert said. “There’s definitely a lot of tradition.
Today should help everybody for the sectional.

“To have those scores in these conditions is pretty
impressive. Your entire team has to be pretty solid to shoot 310 in the rain.
The rain really bothered a lot of people.”

While no Raider carded a nine-hole score worse than 41, no
one had a nine-hole score better than 38.

“It’s disappointing,” Mathew said. “We had
high hopes of winning the conference. This is motivation toward the sectional
and our run through the state tournament. This is a reminder that we need to
step it up and play better. We will be ready.”

Mathew said his 77 should have been at least 74 or 75.

“I’ve been having putting struggles for about two
weeks,” Mathew said. “I missed a couple of birdie opportunities here
and there.

“Otherwise, I’d take 77 in this kind of weather. The
rain was awful when we started this morning. Then, it lightened up, which
created some birdie opportunities. But I couldn’t capitalize.”

Girls T&F tournament series: Here is what YOU should watch for

By Brandon Jones
Staff Writer

Though the weather may be telling us differently, we have now
reached that time of year where the contenders separate themselves from
the pretenders. As the girls track & field tournament series
approaches, here are my top story lines that should be followed through
the next 17 days.

The team race
Fort Wayne Northropâ??s dynasty in the girls track & field realm
is in serious danger as contenders from Central Indiana appear ready to
challenge the Bruins. The year 2006 will undoubtedly provide the
closest team race on the girls side that we have seen in some time.
Will it be Northrop quieting the skeptics once again? Will Central
Indiana rivals Warren Central and Ben Davis come out on top? Stay tuned
to find out â?¦

9:15 in the 4×800 meter relay?
This race has been one of the more competitive races on the girls
side for the past few years, and expect another record-breaking
performance in 2006. The same grouping of teams — Northridge,
Chesterton, Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield, North Central
(Indianapolis), Valparaiso — should provide some familiar faces up
front. There will be huge time drops over the next couple of weeks,
with many squads capable of breaking the 9:15 barrier. Stay tuned to
find out â?¦

Will Tamara Adams pull off the double?
No, not the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles double. With Fort
Wayne Northrop fighting for every point they can get in the highly
competitive team race, will hurdle phenom Tamara Adams have enough gas
in the tank to compete in both the 100-meter dash and the 100 hurdles?
She did so a couple weeks ago at the Summit Athletic Conference meet,
and did so in impressive fashion. Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Highly competitive hurdle race
I like to call it the big five. Sylvia Massey (Ben Davis), Taylor
Sefranka (Harding), Tamara Adams (Fort Wayne Northrop), Katie Johnson
(Evansville Central) and Vanneisha Ivy (Muncie Central) will all vie
for the title of state champion in the 100-meter hurdles. Who will come
out on top? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Can Banfich double?
Alex Banfich of Culver Academies will be trying to pull off the
difficult 1600 meters/3200 meters double at the state meet. She and
Megan Jackson of Northridge should follow each other from the Bremen
Regional, and it should be fun to watch. Banfich is the only athlete in
Indiana to break the 5:00 barrier, but will she have enough left to
complete the double? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Can Caldwell do it?
Ashley Caldwell (North Central) has been the favorite in many
peopleâ??s minds to take home the state championship at 400 meters. Heads
were turned, however, at the Marion County Tournament last week when
Caldwell was upset on her home track as Ben Davisâ?? Kandise Thompson
pulled the upset, breaking the meet record in the process. Can Caldwell
prove that it was a fluke and still come out on top? Stay tuned to find
out â?¦

Wide-open 800 meter field
There are plenty of worthy candidates that could surprise the
running community and take home the 800 meters state title. Looking at
the leader board times, no one athlete stands out. This is another
event where times will drop in a hurry. Will someone establish herself
as a favorite over the next couple of weeks? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Can Candyce McGrone lead Warren Central to the team title?
Indianapolis Broad Ripple transfer Candyce McGrone has been
setting the track on fire this spring for Warren Central. Can she take
the next step and lead the Warriors to the team title? If all goes
well, McGrone will be competing as a member of Warrenâ??s 4×100 and 4×400
meter relay teams, both of which have posted the stateâ??s fastest times.
She will also have individual duties in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
In all, she could account for 35-40 team points for Warren Central,
which would be HUGE in the team race. Will she do it? Stay tuned to
find out â?¦

Can Rachel Deloney dominate the throws?
Over the past couple of weeks, performances have been coming in
that would cause one to wonder if Bloomington Northâ??s Rachel Deloney
can pull off the shot put and discus double. If she does, she will have
earned it as throws over 40 feet (shot) and 130 feet (discus) have
raised some eyebrows. Will she come out on top in her hometown? Stay
tuned to find out â?¦

How high for Veith?
In most peopleâ??s minds, the question is â??how highâ? rather than
â??ifâ? Katie Veith of Homestead will go at the state finals. Undoubtedly
(weather permitting), we are looking at another state record. How high
will the Homestead vaulter go? Stay tuned to find out â?¦

Leah Eber of Columbia City: State record?
Okay, so 20â??-04.00â? is asking a bit much. But Eber, a junior, has
dominated the stateâ??s long jump marks throughout the spring. She is a
clear favorite entering the state finals, and why not? Marks of greater
than 19 feet are not easy to come by, and Eber looks up to the
challenge. Will she break the 20-foot mark on the biggest stage? Stay
tuned to find out â?¦

Wide-open high jump field
There seems to be no clear-cut favorite in the high jump as we
enter the girls tournament series. Will that change with the sectional
and regional rounds? Can anyone establish herself as a clear favorite?
Stay tuned to find out â?¦

All of these questions and more will be answered June 2 in Bloomington. I cannot wait. Can you?

Stay tuned to HoosierAuthority.com over the coming weeks for ALL
of your track & field tournament series coverage. We will have the
Top 10 times per event from each sectional and regional posted as soon
as the results become available.
