Sixth-ranked Carmel an upset winner of loaded John Shirley Invitational

By Will Willems
Staff Intern

INDIANAPOLIS â??? The 10th annual John Shirley Invitational co-hosted Aug.
26 by North Central (Indianapolis) and Carmel might be the best
tennis tournament outside the state meet. The 16-team invitational, named after
the former North Central coach of 17 years, is broken into two divisions of
eight teams.

This
yearâ??s Shirley Division, the more highly regarded of the two, included the top
eight ranked teams in the state. The Buckley Division, named after another former
Panther coach, also included four ranked teams. When all this excellent tennis
had ended Saturday, sixth-ranked Carmel
had earned the tourney championship with 29 points.

The
Greyhounds edged runner-up No. 4 Center Grove (27), with host No. 2 North
Central (24) third. Top-ranked
Park Tudor tied for
fourth with fifth-ranked Floyd Central, with sixth-place defending state
champion Cathedral followed by No. 8 Homestead and third-ranked Brebeuf.

â??Itâ??s a
huge first step for us, said Carmel
coach Mike Bostic. â??I donâ??t think anyone would have picked us today. It shows
what our kids are made of.

â??Itâ??s a
huge boost of confidence, but in a few days we are going to see the best
again.

The
Greyhounds were paced by the second doubles team of Harrison Hines and Mike Fox,
who held on to beat Indianapolis Cathedralâ??s David Stauffer and Jeff Lucas 6-4,
7-5.

Even with
all the great teams in attendance, no clear state favorite emerged as all the
teams finished within 20 points of each other.

The No. 1
singles crown was won for the third straight year by North Centralâ??s Paul
Chapelle, who dominated the competition on the way to victory. Chapelle
disposed of Homesteadâ??s Cameron Huffman 6-2, 6-2 in the morningâ??s first round,
then came back in the afternoon to made quick work of Cathedralâ??s Luke
Bielawski (6-2, 7-6 (4)) and Carmelâ??s Andrew Nguyen (6-2, 6-4).

â??I had to
play very well to do it,â? Chapelle said. â??Itâ??s great to win individual titles,
but the team comes first. The goal is to win team state â??? an individual title
would just be bonus.

The other
singles champions were Center Groveâ??s Austin Sasone in a two-set No. 2 victory
over Park Tudorâ??s Michael Rardon (6-4, 6-4) and Park Tudorâ??s Kishan Shah at No.
3 singles with a win over Charlie Russell of Cathedral.

The No. 1
doubles team of Craig Kirchgessner and Adam Struble from Floyd Central traveled
all the way up I-65 to wrest the title from Center Groveâ??s Matt Smith and Gary Nickell
in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The
victorious Highlander duo had outlasted Brebeufâ??s Adam Katz and Charlie Hurst
6-2, 3-6, 11-9 in the fist round to avenge a loss from the previous week, then
downed Homestead
6-2, 6-7, 7-6.

â??We were
ready for it,â? Kirchgessner said of the first match. â??We knew it was going to
be a good match.

Added
Struble: â??They beat us last Friday, so we wanted to come out and show them
something.

No. 2 Noblesville turns the tables on top-ranked Carmel, 1-0

By Will Willems
Staff Intern

NOBLESVILLE
â??? The highly anticipated match up between No. 1 Carmel and No. 2 Noblesville
didnâ??t disappoint Aug. 26 in an energetic match that saw the host Millers post
a 1-0 upset in the nightcap of a boys-girls doubleheader at Hazel Dell Elementary School.

â??Itâ??s
still only the fourth game of the season, said Noblesville coach Mike Brady,
whose Millers moved to 4-0 on the season. â??Itâ??s always good to go out and beat Carmel, but itâ??s still
early and when we play them again in sectionals, they are going to come out
harder.

Carmel coach Frank Dixon agreed that
these two teams will meet again.

â??I think
we played pretty well, all things considered,â? said Dixon, whose Greyhounds dropped to 5-1. â??Itâ??s
always a huge grudge match. I told the kids that the last two years the winner
of this game has lost the rematch in sectionals, so hopefully that remains
true.

The early
moments of the match saw the two rivals feeling each other out while trying to
gain an advantage.

&&&&

In the 15th
minute, Noblesville broke through for the only goal when senior Margo McAuley
got loose in front. Carmel
defender Maddie Howe cleared the first shot off the line, but McAuley buried
the rebound in the center of the net.

â??The girls
just wanted it,â? Brady said. â??Carmel
is a good team â??? we knew they were going to come out tonight and play hard. But
[we] got after it for 80 minutes, and that is what you have to do to beat Carmel.

Physical,
back-and-forth play was the theme for the rest of the half, with each time not
really coming close to adding on to the score. In the second half, the heavens
opened up into a torrential downpour, making play a little sloppy.

Noblesvilleâ??s
Mary Krieger dominated the flow of play for the second half. She had numerous
close blasts that just went wide and required many good saves by Carmel goalkeeper Emma Gormley.

The best
chance in the Noblesville second half came when Ashley Auld got loose on a
brilliantly placed pass by Krieger. Auld beat two defenders and the goalkeeper,
but a sliding Jessica Rix saved a sure goal.

The final
20 minutes saw a lot of high intensity as Carmel
tried to get the equalizer.

Noblesville
goalkeeper Chey Arvin came up with many brilliant diving saves, but none was as
good as a diving grab of a shot by Carmelâ??s
Katelyn Strout from 20 yards away with 15 minutes remaining.

â??Their
keeper did a nice job, Dixon
said. â??We put some pressure on, and they just stopped it.â?

Brady said
he was really proud of his teamâ??s effort on defense.

â??Carmelâ??s explosive,â? he
said. â??They have a half-dozen players that can put the ball in the back of the
net. You just have to make sure youâ??re marking up, and tonight the girls
stepped up to their defensive responsibilities and did what they had to do.

Top-ranked Carmel boys down host Noblesville, 3-1

By Will Willems
Staff Intern

NOBLESVILLE
â??? Carmel came out and proved why the Greyhounds
are the No. 1-ranked boys soccer squad in the state Aug. 26 by dominating rival
Noblesville, 3-1, at Hazel
Dell Elementary
School in Noblesville.

â??We expect
to come out and dominate with the team we got, said Carmel coach Dan Kapsalis, whose troops
improved to 3-0. â??I mean weâ??re beatable, but when we play our â??Aâ?? game, we are
tough to beat.

Noblesville
coach Tom Keenan was just proud of the effort his team displayed against the
stateâ??s best.

â??Carmel is a strong team,â?
said Keenan, whose Millers fell to 0-3. â??I thought my defenders did a great job
today â??? we just need a little more effort up in the forwards so that all the
pressure isnâ??t coming back.â?

The
Greyhounds jumped out front in the very first minute when senior midfielder Troy
Blewitt put one home. Miller goalkeeper Christian Resiak was injured on the
play, and Mitch Sangalis came into to replace him.

â??Weâ??ve had
a quick start now a couple of times in our first couple of games, Kapsalis
said. â??We want to come out and set the pace and set the tone, and so far weâ??ve
done that.

Carmel continued to dominate the flow of
play throughout the first half and added a second goal by junior Daniel Moore
in the 15th minute. For the game, the Greyhounds would outshoot the
Millers 18-6.

The second
half began to get a little chippy, with four yellow cards in the first 20
minutes.

Carmel added another insurance goal in
the 65th minute on a goal by Aaron Henkle on the assist from Rich
Balchan. The Greyhounds wound muster many opportunities on the Noblesville goal,
but Sangalis and the Miller defense held strong.

Noblesville
was able to mount a little bit of offense in the last 15 minutes. The Millers
managed to get their first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 78th
minute. Senior Joel Grimmer took the kick and was rejected by Carmel goalkeeper Zach Carr, but John Tchoula
put in the rebound to get the final margin of victory.

â??I told
the team that it wasnâ??t pretty, but I like the effort and fight because thatâ??s
what it takes,â? Keenan said. â??It got some of the pressure off our back. Now we know
we can actually put the ball in the back of the net.

Kapsalis,
although upset about giving up the late goal, was proud of the way his keeper
made the first save.

â??Heâ??s
(Carr) just outstanding in goal,â? Kapsalis said. â??When we have â??PKâ?? situations,
we feel pretty confident. Heâ??s going to give us a good effort, and tonight he
made a big save. He just couldnâ??t get it over the bar.â?

â??Iâ??m
really proud of the guys. They came out and really played well. We played a
flawless game.

Chapters 3-4: Diary of state champ Alex Banfich

Culver Academies’ Alexandra
Banfich, the defending state girls cross country champion, has agreed to take
us on the adventure of her junior year. Alex is a six-time All-State runner,
two-time state champion, and a cross country national meet qualifier — all
this in just two years of high school. She is also a member of one of the
state’s Top 10 teams. We are very lucky to have her open up her training for
the entire state to read.

We at Hoosier Authority would like
to thank Alex and her coach for giving us this opportunity. Now, onto Alex â?¦

Dear
Diary:

Monday, Aug. 14
Workout:
35-minute run

It
was the first day of practice for our team and since our coach wasn’t sure what
level everyone was at, we had a relatively easy practice. This run gave us a
chance to get to know our running groups and get to know each other.

Tuesday, Aug. 15
Workout:
40 minutes with pace changes

I
did this run on the trails with our assistant coach, last year’s NCAA Division
III men’s national champion (he shall remain nameless for now). Our team is
really fortunate and excited to have him as a coach this season!

Wednesday, Aug. 16
Workout:
50-minute run

Today
we had practice up at Indiana Dunes. We started out running in the trails and
ended with a few hills. It was a nice change of scenery, and after the run to
cool off we all got ice cream and waded in Lake Michigan.

Thursday, Aug. 17
Workout:
Tempo run

We
ran a 1,000-meter loop of the course at race pace to show the girls the course
and help them become comfortable and familiar with it. We all went for a tempo
run in groups afterwards.

Friday, Aug. 18
Workout:
Interval run

Today
I ran the first half of the workout with a group in one of the trails out by
our golf course, then ran the second half by myself. After the workout, we had
“team bonding time” where we all told stories about the funniest
thing that’s ever happened to us. It was a good way for all of us to get to
know more about each other and have something to remember each other by.

Saturday, Aug. 19
Workout:
Tempo run

I
did this with our top group of girls out on the golf course and on some of the
back roads close to campus. It’s nice to run with people again after running
alone all summer! Our new coach also taught us some new hip-strengthening and
stretching exercises that we’d never done before.

Sunday, Aug. 20
Workout:
No run (elliptical)

Today
was another cardio workout (good because of the low impact on your legs). My
teammates and I met up and did this in the fitness center on campus.

Monday, Aug. 21
Today
I did a run with one of our assistant coaches. He and I ran at a hard tempo for
the first part of the run, then backed off and ran medium tempo around the golf
course. On the way back to campus, we did intervals of hard and medium tempo.
Our team got together and had a team dinner that night at the dining hall just
for fun!

Tuesday, Aug. 22
The
workout today was repeats through one of the trails on campus. We would do one
repeat and then “actively rest” until our heart rate went down to a
certain level. After those were finished, we ended the workout with some 100-meter
sprints.

Wednesday, Aug. 23
Today
was a recovery day for the entire team. We all did 35 minutes on either an
elliptical or a bike, then lifted weights and did a pool workout. We were pretty
tired out from the past two days, and this gave us a chance to re-energize!

Thursday, Aug. 24
Today
we did repeats on our race course. This gave the new people even more practice
running on the course before our first meet. We then went to another loop and
finished off another set of repeats. Today was also the first day of classes!
It was nice to get back into the routine of school and practice, although I’m
not sure I’ll think it’s so nice after I start doing all my homework!

Friday, Aug. 25
Tomorrow
is our first meet of the season: the Penn Hokum-Karem. We did the meet warm-up
that we will do tomorrow, then a short run where we focused on goals for the
race tomorrow. We also had another team dinner!

Saturday, Aug. 26
Hokum-Karem
race! Our team won this meet — a great start to the season! Everyone was
really excited!

Sunday, Aug. 27
A
medium-hard run and 30 minutes on an elliptical or bike for cardio. Sundays are
usually good cardio workouts for us and recovery days from the meets.

#15 Franklin Central steals the show at Black and Gold Relays in Noblesville

The top-ranked Warriors of Warren Central were riding an emotional high coming into Saturday’s Black and Gold Relays in Noblesville.

And why not?  They had defeated a stiff field at Wednesday’s Brebeuf Jesuit Invitational and had just been ranked as the Midwest Region’s second best harriers in the first Nike Team National rankings.

But that all came to an end as the 15th ranked Flashes of Franklin Central stole the show.

Franklin Central used strong front running skills as they placed two pairs in the top five to defeat the top ranked Warriors by 6.5 seconds.

Not your typical style of cross country meet sure.  But this early season contest in which a team’s total time is a result of adding the combined times of its top three pairs, gave Flashes head coach Eric Kellison something to smile about.

“We had a great summer, especially July.”  The Flashes head man said.  “These guys make me look real good as a coach.”

A great summer?  I guess so.

Franklin Central’s top pair, senior Adam Green and sophomore Scott Lasiter completed the course in 28:46 (average 4:48) to place 4th overall.

Senior Jordan Mitchell and his sophomore partner Joe Talhelm did their part in contributing to the win as they placed 5th overall in 29:31 (average 4:55).

That was good enough to give Franklin Central (89:20), the win over Warren Central (89:27).

Warren Central did manage to win the individual portion of the race, as it was decided very early on.

Seniors De’Sean Turner and Ondraius Richardson completed the 6 mile relay in a time of 28:14 while Bishop Chatard’s Andrew Poore and Aaron Kremer finished 2nd, 27 seconds behind.

In the small school division, Pendleton Heights swept both the indivdual and team portions of the competition.

The Arabians placed three pairs in the top 11 spots led by seniors Cole Hardacre and Kale Hopper who were victorious in 29:46.

Pendleton Heights won comfortably with an overall team time of 93:35.
