Fan Wagon game: 3A No. 3 Heritage Hills dominates 2A No. 7 Southridge, 26-0, in monster Pocket Conference showdown

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer
HUNTINGBURG
â??? Domination!

Thatâ??s the
word that first comes to mind when describing Heritage Hillsâ?? 26-0 win over
Southridge at the Hoosier Authority Fan Wagon game Sept. 29 at Southridge.

How
dominating were the Patriots? Coming into the game, the host Raiders were
averaging 370 rushing yards per game. The Patriots held them to 50 yards,
total. Heritage Hills began every possession in Southridge territory except for
the opening drive of the second half, when Southridge kicked off.

â??To shut
this team out is an accomplishment, said 29th-year Heritage Hills coach
Bob Clayton. â??They are an excellent football team. I still say they are an
excellent football team, but we got the effort from our kids tonight, and we
really did a good job.

With the
win, the Patriots have now won 59 straight games in the Pocket Athletic
Conference.

â??It (the
59-game streak) means a lot,â? said Clayton. â??People always ask me how you do
it. Itâ??s that hunger, and every team has to have that hunger to be champions if
they want to succeed.

Heritage
Hillsâ?? first two drives started on the Southridge 36 and 23, respectively. But
an interception on the initial drive and a punt after two consecutive sacks
from Southridgeâ??s Chad Wertman left the Patriots with nothing to show for the
great field position.

After
another Southridge three-and-out (the Raiders ran nine plays over their first
three possessions), Heritage Hills began its third drive at the Southridge 33.
Eight plays later, Nathan Schipp scored from one yard out on 4th and 1. The
extra point from Seth LaGrange made it 7-0 with 3:40 left in the first half.

â??We
finally settled down and moved the ball,â? Clayton said. â??We should have had
some scores earlier than that, though, but we took some big sacks.

On the next drive, the
Raiders were finally able to get that elusive first down. Two plays later,
though, Schipp intercepted a pass from Raider quarterback Brad Roesner near
midfield, returning the ball to the Southridge 31 with 2:16 left in the half.

Four plays later, McGrew
hooked up with Alex Bettag for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The ensuing extra
point made it 14-0 with 34 seconds left.

â??That (the score right
before the half) was huge,â? Clayton said. â??The kids did a good job with no timeouts
left to keep their poise.

â??Jacob
made a couple nice passes down there to get us in striking distance and then
made the throw into the end zone for the touchdown.

After an exchange of
punts to start the second half, Heritage Hill started out at the Southridge 45.
McGrew scored from 11 yards out eight plays later, giving the Patriots a 20-0
lead with 10:37 left in the game. The extra point was no good because of a bad
snap.

After Southridge
turned the ball over on downs, the Patriots again got possession in Raider
territory, this time at the 27. Five plays later, Bettag scored his second
touchdown of the game, this one from two yards out on an end around. The extra
point was wide left, giving the Patriots a 26-0 lead.

After a
Southridge punt, Heritage Hills took over and ran out the clock.

The
Patriots improve to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Pocket play, while the loss drops
Southridge to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Next week,
Southridge will travel to Pike Central while Heritage Hills will host Tecumseh.
Both games are set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT.

â??I thought
tonight was going to be a tell-tale sign to see if they had that hunger and
desire and wanted to be champions,â? Clayton said. â??I thought they did a good
job. Now I want them to build from this and be this team instead of the other
team thatâ??s been showing up.â?

NOTE: Photos from the game will be made
available Monday when we receive them from our student photographer at
Southridge.

Friday Night Football: 5A No. 8 Lafayette Jeff mounts comeback of a lifetime in 58-52 homecoming win over Avon

By Jeff Luzadder
Baseball Coordinator

LAFAYETTE â??? The Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos must have been telling each other
the famous Yogi Berra slogan â??it’s never over till itâ??s overâ? toward the end of
the third quarter of their Sept. 29 Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle with Avon.

The Class 5A eighth-ranked Bronchos trailed the visiting Orioles
38-17 entering the final period, but quarterback Timmy Fogarty & crew thrilled
a Jeff homecoming crowd by roaring back to tie the game at 45 and send it into
overtime.

In
the first OT, both teams scored touchdowns. But with Avon
getting the ball first to start the second overtime, Jeff safety Blaine Koger
intercepted a pass in the end zone to give the ball to the Bronchos. Ryan Poxon
then ran nine yards for the winning score as the never-say-die Bronchos survived,
58-52, to improve their HCC record to 6-1.

The
double-OT comeback was surreal. Fogarty threw three interceptions and fumbled once
during the first three quarters of the game, but he made up for those miscues
by passing for 462 yards and three TDs, with two of the scores going to
homecoming king P.J. Tyson. Matt Vlahogeorge, meanwhile, ran for the six-yard
TD with 35 seconds to go in regulation that tied it up at 45.

This
football game was exciting for even the casual sports fan as fireworks went off
into the cool night air to cap off Jeffâ??s heroic homecoming comeback. Come back
later for the full game report from our friends at The Lafayette Journal and
Courier
!

Friday Night Football: 5A top-ranked Warren Central throws 28-zip shutout at 5A No. 3 Carmel

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS â??? â??All we heard all week was how great their offense was, and that really pumped our defense up.â?

Um, slightly.

Warren Central, Class 5Aâ??s top-ranked team and the big schoolsâ??
three-time defending state champion, made assistant coach Dave
Enrightâ??s words ring true Sept. 29 with a dominating 28-0 victory over
5A No. 3 Carmel in a huge Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference
showdown at Warren Stadium.

Sure, the usual suspects were in place for the Warriors. Senior
running back Darren Evans carried 31 times for 207 yards. Senior
quarterback Matt Upshaw ran five times for 64 yards and a pair of
touchdowns on option keepers. And senior defensive back Jerimy Finch
turned in a highlight-reel punt return 59 yards for a touchdown.

But this game was ALLLLLL about the defense.

Warren Central sent standout Carmel
running back Aaron King â??? the stateâ??s third-leading rusher coming in at
193.5 yards per game â??? back into last week, holding the junior to just
34 yards on 17 carries. That included a meager three yards on five
second-half carries.

Carmel
â??? remember, the Greyhounds had put 49, 42, 56, and 38 points on the
board in their first four MIC games â??? managed a whole two first downs
for the game â?¦ one in each half.

Then there was the goal-line stand. Trailing 7-0 to start the second
quarter, Carmelâ??s Kevin Haverstock intercepted a Durell Martin pass at
the Warren 29 and raced toward paydirt. But the senior was forced out
of bounds at the 1-yard line, setting the stage for some serious
defensive heroics.

After a King dive up the middle lost a yard, Warren Central was called for offsides, setting up a 2nd and 1. A sneak by backup quarterback Morgan Newton was stuffed, making it 3rd and 1. A pitch right to King lost another yard, making it 4th and 2.

The call was the right one â??? a fake dive up the middle and rollout
pass by Newton. But the sophomore did not see senior tight end Ryan
Murray wide open in the right corner of the end zone, choosing instead
to fire at Haverstock at the goal line. The pass was short, and
Carmelâ??s golden opportunity was gone.

â??That goal-line stand is what itâ??s all about,â? said Warren Central
first-year coach Steve Tutsie. â??In my 15 years, Iâ??ve never seen a
better one.

â??We got a dang-good defense â??? thereâ??s no doubt they won the game for
us. Our coaches work harder than anybody, and this week the defensive
coaches â??? Marques Clayton, Emil Ekiyor, Chris Price, Justin Dixson, and
Scott Marsh â??? just did a tremendous job.â?

MORE TO COME â?¦

STATE FINALS: No. 3 Brebeuf downs top-ranked Hamilton SE for team title; Warsaw's Emily Johnson captures individual crown

Third-ranked
Brebeuf dropped the New Castle Regional title last week by a single shot to
top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern. The No. 1 Royals also had downed the Braves
in sectional play two weeks back, that time by 10 strokes.

So how
sweet it must have been, then, when Brebeuf roared back from a 25-stroke
deficit Sept. 30 at the girls golf state finals, defeating Southeastern by
three shots for the Indianapolis Jesuit prep schoolâ??s first-ever state
championship. Meanwhile,
Warsaw senior Emily Johnson shot an even-par 72 both days over the 5,697-yard
course to capture her second individual title by two shots over Brebeuf senior
Aimee Neff (76-70â??146) and Brownsburg junior Jordan Woods (72-74â??146).

Brebeuf posted a 313 team score a day after its sixth-best 334 to
finish with a 647 (+25), three shots better than a very consistent Hamilton
Southeastern (326-324â??650), second-ranked Martinsville
(309-344â??653), and No. 5 Noblesville (320-334â??650).

Crown
Point senior Terra Miller (73-77), Avon sophomore Breanna Patz (75-75), and
Boonville senior Maggie Wood (73-77) all shot 150 in tying for fourth behind Johnson, with Valparaiso
senior Raquel Horton (80-71â??151) one shot back in seventh.

Friday Night Football: 3A No. 10 Greensburg holds on for 14-7 EIAC victory over 3A No. 14 Batesville

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

GREENSBURG â??? It may be impossible to lose a football game and actually be happy,
but Batesville coach Eric Heppner had to experience something close to that Sept.
29 following his Class 3A No. 14 Bulldogsâ?? 14-7 loss at Greensburg.

After all,
at halftime he was surely worried about just being able to stay on the field
with the Pirates.

Greensburg dominated the first half of play
in just about every way possible. The Pirates shut down Batesvilleâ??s vaunted
ball-control offense. The Greensburg
offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage in establishing its own rushing
attack. And the Pirates were able to complete passes at critical times.

In short,
the Pirates looked like their No. 10 ranking in 3A might not be nearly high
enough.

They took
a 14-0 lead into the intermission, and only a lack of time had kept it from
being more.

MORE TO COME â?¦

Colin: Handicapping the girls individual state champion possibilities

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Cross Country/Track &
Field Coordinator

The
two most important weekends in regular-season cross country have passed. Now
teams wait for the championship phase of the fall. Conference meets approach
and will quickly be followed up by the tournament.

Very
soon, we will have a great handle on cross country strength in the state of Indiana.

With
New Prairie and Culver down, preseason assumptions have been confirmed.
Defending state champions Westfield
and Culver Academiesâ?? Alex Banfich remain the top team and individual,
respectively, and look to be virtually untouchable this season.

The team
rankings have been compiled weekly throughout the season. The individuals,
however, have been basically ignored.

Below
is an analysis of girls I perceive to have any chance of winning the individual
state title, followed by the Top 25 rankings.

The Favorite
Alex Banfich, Culver Academies

The
defending state champion has looked better a year later than at the onset of
her sophomore season. Last year at this time, Banfich was just coming into her
own after some injuries. Now, she has completely dominated every race. Banfich
was the individual champion at New Prairie in the big school race, winning by a
comfortable 10-second margin and covering the course 30 seconds faster than the
previous year. In this season’s race, she defeated two of her biggest
competitors for the state title. Banfich is undefeated this season. In fact, not
counting the state meet her freshman year, Banfich is undefeated in every Indiana cross country meet she has ever run.
Her only setback this season came last weekend when she had to sit out the
Culver Invitational due to illness.

The Contenders
Chelsea Blanchard, Carroll (Fort Wayne)

Blanchard
ran last season displaying just a shadow of her potential, struggling through
the season to help her team advance once again to the state meet. As predicted,
she is back in business this fall. Blanchard was second at New Prairie in 14:43
and has destroyed the field in every other race, solidifying her status as the
northeastern juggernaut. Carroll does not travel to the Culver Invitational,
instead running in the Snider Classic. Last weekend on a tough, rain-soaked
course, Blanchard again broke 15 minutes in dominating fashion. The second-place
runner, a teammate, was some 50 seconds behind.

Amanda & Lauren Hardesty, Valparaiso
For
the first time in her career at Valpo, Amanda Hardesty found herself as the
team’s top runner last year at the state meet. That momentum has carried over
into this season, where she has run as the Vikings’ No. 1 all season. Amanda
placed third behind Banfich and Blanchard at New Prairie. The next weekend, she
was the Culver Invitational champion, running the unofficial best time in the
state at 14:19. Lauren, the 1600 state champion last spring and biggest threat
to Banfich entering this season, went through a slight mid-season hiatus due to
illness. However, she is well on the road to recovery as evidenced by seventh-
and third-place finishes at New Prairie and Culver respectively.

Kristina Krasich & Maggie
Bingham, Westfield
The
Shamrocks have been noticeably absent from results, including not running a
race the first big weekend (New Prairie week). When they have run, this pair
has looked decent. Bingham was the winner at the Hamilton County
meet, outrunning Krasich by 12 seconds. Krasich was the team’s top runner at
the Woodruff Invitational, where she covered 5K in 17:47. At Culver, Bingham
finished second while Krasich, seemingly on an off-day, placed sixth. History
has shown that the Westfield
girls tend to run best in the last meet of the year. The results thus far have
been adequate, but expect to see these two really turn it on around semistate
time.

The Darkhorse
Shelbi Burnett, Center Grove

Though
she is a well-known runner and All-Stater, Burnett may be one of the state’s
best secrets at this point. Burnett was defeated in her first race at the
Brebeuf Invitational by Avon’s Lorna Whaley.
Since then, Burnett is undefeated and has run relatively unchallenged. She has
won big invitationals at Martinsville, Ben
Davis, Franklin Central, and Southport. The
only close race out of those four was Ben Davis, where she outran Lawrence North’s
Erika Utter (my former darkhorse) by a second on a muddy, rain-soaked course.

It
is mysterious as to what Burnett is capable of. Center Grove does not travel to
New Prairie or Culver, so Burnett has not faced a plethora of top competition
in one race. Last year, Burnett seemed to run her best when she was the
dominant runner at the meet. Still, she was 10th at the loaded Franklin Central Semistate
and 18th in the state finals, displaying a potential that could be realized
this season.
