Still Southern Wells and Chatard with comfortable leads in the small/medium school polls

Invitational results from around the state could not dethrone either Southern Wells or Chatard from the lead in the HoosierAuthority.com small/medium school polls.  Here is how Coach Bob Swank and his panelists view the small and medium school landscape in Indiana.

SMALL GIRLS

A third place finish at the Snider Classic was enough for Southern Wells to remain in first.

Frankton continues to impress as they took 4 of the top 7 at the Madison County meet on Thursday. Although they were fifth at Wabash on Saturday, the four teams ahead of them were all strong large schools.  The previous Saturday they had a very
impressive win at the Tipton Invitaional.

Kouts was a newcomer in the small school poll, after impressing voters by running close to both Carroll (Flora) and Lafayette Central Catholic at Culver.

1 Southern Wells         80 (8)
2 Frankton               70
3 Carroll (Flora)        64
4 Perry Central          58
5 Laf. Central Catholic  42
6 Wapahani               38
7 Dubois                 23
8 Southwestern (Hanover) 20
9 Kouts                  11
10 Oldenburg             10
10 Northeastern          10
Others Receiving Votes: Hebron 8, Tri 3, West Central 3

MEDIUM GIRLS

With another fine showing in the open division at Culver, the Chatard girls kept their season long grip on first place.

An already very strong and deep West Lafayette team became even better in the last two meets when Kelsey Lewark gained eligibility.

Culver took a slight dip when several of their top seven did not run at New Prairie and then Banfich did not run at Culver.  If they get everyone together again at top strength, they will likely rebound immediately.

A strong showing by Concordia in the open division at Culver showed why they have been highly regarded all season.

South Bend St. Joseph’s propelled themselves all the way from 9th to 5th with a 2nd to West Lafayette in the closed division at Culver.

1 Chatard           70 (7)
2 West Lafayette    58
3 Concordia         57
4 Tell City         44
5 SB Saint Joseph’s 43

Barr-Reeve maintains lead in small school poll, while Silver Creek extends advantage in medium school poll

Another week of big invitationals around the state have shaken up the small/medium school polls just a bit.  As teams gear up for conference meets and the upcoming IHSAA tournament series, here is how Bob Swank and his panel view the small and medium school scene in Indiana.

SMALL BOYS

Severe storms in Southern Indiana cancelled several Saturday meets.  The following ranked small schools did not run in scheduled Saturday meets:  Barr Reeve, North Central, Clay City, Shakamak, and South Knox.

Perry Central had a nice week.  On Thursday, they won the Paoli Invite beating 2nd place Dubois (ranked #4) by a comfortable margin while #8 Orleans was fourth. On Saturday Perry Central moved up to the big school division at Bedford North Lawrence where they placed a strong fourth.

Meanwhile at Culver, Carroll (Flora) acquitted themselves well
and North Miami received votes for the first time with
a nice showing.

1  Barr Reeve          77  (5)
2  Perry Central       75  (3)
3  North Central       61
4  Dubois              59
5  Clay City           45
6  Carroll (Flora)     43
7  Shakamak            23
7  Orleans             23
9  Rising Sun          18
10 South Knox          11
Others Receiving Votes: North Miami   5

*NOTE* Polls were due and turned in prior to Tuesday’s Jasper Invitational.

MEDIUM BOYS

Panelists are starting to believe that Silver Creek is for real and they have moved into a solid lead for the #1 ranking.

Norwell, West Noble and Chatard finished in that order at the Snider Classic, but all were very close in the scoring.

1 Silver Creek         77 (6)
2 Andrean              59 (1)
3 Norwell              58
4 West Noble           57 (1)
5 West Lafayette       54
6 Chatard              53
7 SB Saint Joseph’s    28
8 Peru                 20

Preview: Girls golf state finals

From ihsaa.org

A total of
127 golfers will converge on The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin as the 34th
Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals begin Friday, Sept. 29. Second-round play
concludes the next day.

Twenty-one
teams advanced five golfers each while 22 individual golfers advanced without
their teams to the event. Participants will tee off the Middle 9 course and the
Road 9 course beginning at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Friday. Teams and individuals that
make the cut will return for a second day on Saturday, with the first group
again starting at 8:30. The first-round tee times and pairings are available here.

Fourteen
teams return from last year?s state finals, including five of the top six
finishers. Two-time defending state champ Penn did not qualify this year after
finishing fifth in the Penn Sectional. Evansville Memorial qualified its team
for the seventh consecutive year, the state?s longest active streak, while
Northview advanced for the fifth straight year. South Bend St. Joseph?s is the
only first-time qualifier in this year?s field.

Of the 21
teams competing this weekend, only Martinsville
(1991, 1992, 1993, 1995-2000), Noblesville (1986, 1987), and Hamilton
Southeastern (2003) have carried home the state championship trophy.

Eleven
players who finished in the Top 25 last year are back for another round,
including 2003 state champion Emily Johnson of Warsaw and 2005 state runner-up Ellen Mueller
of Evansville Memorial. Johnson, who won the title as a freshman with a
two-round card of 72-76-148, finished eighth as a sophomore and tied for ninth
last year as North Decatur?s Angela Gauck won
back-to-back crowns. Mueller, meanwhile, has been knocking on the door, having
finished in the top five each of her previous three trips to the state meet.
She finished fifth as a freshman and third as a sophomore.

Also in
the meet is sophomore Anne Ormson of South Bend St. Joseph?s, who finished
sixth overall a year ago when she helped Penn to the team title.

Volleyball: What’s ahead in Week 7

By
Adam Rouse

Volleyball
Coordinator
With just over three full weeks left before
sectional play begins, volleyball squads all over the state are hoping to hit
their strides at the right time.
What happened with the top five in each class, and
who are they playing this week? Read below â?¦

Class 4A
1. Indianapolis
Cathedral
2. Warren Central
3. New Albany
4. Elkhart
Memorial
5. Center Grove
Not that they needed to, but the Cathedral Irish
cemented their spot at the top of Class 4A volleyball by claiming the
title in their own invitational Sept. 23 with a perfect 4-0 record. The
Irish defeated
3A No. 5 New Castle in two games in pool play, then downed 4A No. 3 New
Albany in three thrilling sets in the championship match. This week,
Cathedral
will be on the road for a pair of showdowns with Carmel
(Tuesday) and 4A No. 8 Muncie Central (Thursday).
Warren Central

continues to sizzle as the Warriors went 3-0 against Ben Davis, Terre Haute
North, and Terre Haute South to improve its season mark to 25-1. The only
blemish on Warren Central?s record came Sept. 12 against 4A No. 5 Center
Grove (a five-game loss). The Warriors are out of action this week.
New Albany played
seven matches last week and went 6-1, with the lone loss coming to No. 1
Cathedral. Despite the loss in the championship match of the Cathedral
Invitational, the Bulldogs did quite well in getting to the final. Along the way, New
Albany ousted No. 5 Center Grove in two games. The
Bulldogs will play Forest Park
(Tuesday) and Madison
(Thursday) before traveling to Jennings County on
Saturday.
Elkhart Memorial
had an outstanding 6-0 week to push its
season record to 21-1. The Chargers took down No. 8 Muncie Central in three
games after losing the first and also defeated Avon, Bloomington
North, and Michigan City.
Elkhart Memorial will face Wawasee on Thursday and then host Class A No. 2
Michigan City Marquette on Saturday.
Center Grove
remains in the top
five despite three losses (New Albany, New
Castle, and Roncalli) last week in the Cathedral
Invitational. On a very important sidenote, the Trojans were missing a pair of
key frontline players for the invite. Center Grove will look to start another
winning streak this week as the Trojans will participate in the Johnson County
Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday.

Class 3A

1. Yorktown
2. Bellmont
3. Roncalli
4. Delta
5. New
Castle
No.
1 Yorktown successfully defended its top
ranking by defeating current Class A No. 1 Cowan in a tight five-game match last
week. The Tigers will travel to New Palestine for a contest on Wednesday and
will then play in the county tournament over the weekend.
Bellmont
went 7-0 last week to improve to 19-1 on the season with
wins against Fort Wayne Luers, 4A No. 6 LaPorte, and Warsaw. The only hiccup on an otherwise
perfect season came to Yorktown back on Aug. 26. Bellmont will take on Norwell and DeKalb
on Tuesday and Thursday before competing in the Richmond Invite on Saturday.
Roncalli
earned a big victory over
Center Grove last week and defeated Perry Meridian it its only other contest.
The Rebels (14-5) will be playing in the Marion County Tournament this week.
Delta
began its week on a down note by
losing to 4A No. 8 Muncie Central in four games but rebounded to win its next two
matches against Muncie South and surging Shelbyville.
New Castle
jumps in at No. 5 by virtue of a 5-1 week that included
wins against Pendleton Heights, Sacred Heart (KY), Anderson, and 4A No. 5 Center Grove. A
three-match week this week ends with a showdown against Class 2A No. 1 Muncie
Burris on Saturday.

Class 2A
1. Muncie Burris
2. Heritage Christian
3. Wheeler
4. Brownstown
5. Eastbrook
The
gap may be narrowing between No. 1 Muncie
Burris
and No. 2 Heritage Christianin
Class 2A. Burris lost its third and fourth matches last week against
quality
competition. Both losses came in the Warsaw Tournament on Sept. 23
against the
host and 4A No. 6 LaPorte in three games. The Owls did pick up four
wins to put their 2006 record at 14-5. Meanwhile, No. 2 Heritage
Christian went 5-0 last week
with wins against Lawrence North and 3A No. 9 Brebeuf. The Eagles will
face Westfield tonight and then Hamilton Heights and Martinsville on
Tuesday/Thursday.
Wheeler
collected a pair of wins last
week to increase its record to 20-1 on the campaign. The Bearcats will play
three matches this week against Hammond, River Forest, and Highland.
Brownstown
sticks around at No. 4 and will play Seymour on Tuesday before participating
in the Providence Tournament on Saturday.
Eastbrook
comes in at No. 5 after a 5-1 week that included victories over 4A
Huntington North and former Class A No. 9 Hauser. The Panthers’ only loss came
to Class 2A No. 8 Indianapolis Scecina. Eastbrook will travel to Alexandria for a mid-week matchup with the
Tigers.

Class A

1. Cowan
2. Michigan City Marquette
3. Northeast Dubois
4. Loogootee
5. Morristown

Cowan
takes over the No. 1 spot this
week after going 4-0 and defeating former No. 1 Michigan City Marquette at the
Class A Showdown on Sept. 23. The Blackhawks took down No. 9 Springs Valley
along the way to beating Marquette in the championship game. Cowan
will defend its No. 1 ranking against Blue River Valley tonight before playing
in its county tournament on Thursday and Saturday.
Michigan City Marquette slips one spot to No. 2 after falling to
Cowan. Marquette will face South Central (Union Mills) tonight before playing at 4A No. Elkhart Memorial on Saturday.
Northeast Dubois
is coming off a 4-0
week and will be in action against Washington, Heritage Hills, and Medora this
week.
Loogootee
went 2-0 last week
with a victory over No. 6 Barr-Reeve. The Vikings will face No. 9 Springs
Valley on Tuesday and Bloomfield on Thursday before playing in the Harrison
Tourney on Saturday.
Morristown
stays in the top five with a 16-5
overall record after a 3-1 showing at the Class A Showdown. The Yellow Jackets’
only loss came to Michigan City Marquette, but Morristown came right back to defeat
Indianapolis Lutheran for third place. Morristown began with a pair of wins against
Blue River and Wes-Del. This
week, the Yellow Jackets will host Knightstown on Thursday and then play in the
Providence Tournament on Saturday.

Longtime Lafayette Jeff coach Gripe wins 600th

By Jim Stafford
Lafayette
Journal and Courier
Sports Editor

Lafayette
Jefferson’s volleyball team won just one match Sept. 23 in its own tournament,
but that victory was a huge milestone for coach Gail Gripe. The Bronchos’
25-15, 25-4 triumph over Peru
in pool play was the 600th of Gripe’s coaching career.

“This
year has been about coaching kids and not me winning,” said Gripe, whose
team is 2-19. “The most important thing me and my staff can do is get our kids
better so that by the end of the season we are a dangerous team.”

The
Bronchos started the season 0-13 but have won twice in the past week.

“We’re
playing a lot better now,” Gripe said. “They have improved a lot
since the beginning of the season.”

Gripe,
who is now 600-291, is in the midst of her 33rd season overall and 26th at
Lafayette Jeff. She has led the Bronchos to 10 sectional titles, seven regional
championships, and four trips to the state finals. Her 1993 squad was state
runner-up.

“I
hadn’t said a word all season to the kids or the coaches,” Gripe said.
“I really haven’t thought about it. I just have a passion for
coaching.”

IHSAA says no to football games postponed by weather to Monday

By Chris May
Contributing Writer

Heavy
rains and thunderstorms in Week 6 of the Indiana high school football season
not only caused numerous delays, suspensions and postponements, but it will
also cost a few schools one of their nine regular-season competitions.

On Sept.
22, stormy weather blanketed most of Southern Indiana
and forced numerous games to be completed the following day. Some schools who
hoped to play on Monday, however, were met with a surprise ?? a denial by the
IHSAA.

According
to John Harrell?s Indiana
high school football website, five games were to be played Sept. 25. But
according to the IHSAA, only one of those games is expected to be legally
played.

IHSAA rule
54-3.3: ?Schools shall be limited to the playing of one interschool football
game in a calendar week for each team sponsored.â? That means schools would not
be permitted to finish a game Monday and then compete again on Friday.

However, the
rule also states that ?exceptions may be made for inclement weather when
approval is obtained from Commissioner,â? giving schools hope that clearance
would be given by the IHSAA for games to be played on Monday.

Of the games
that were to be attempted Monday ?? Linton at North Daviess, Mitchell at Salem,
North Harrison at Brownstown, South Decatur at Triton Central, and West
Washington at Springs Valley ?? the IHSAA ruled that only the South Decatur-Triton
Central game would legally be played, and that one due only to some extraordinary
maneuvering.

According
to IHSAA Communications Director Joe Gentry, South Decatur
and Triton Central were allowed to play because the schools agreed they would
not play a junior varsity contest and that no varsity players who played last
Friday will play today, thus satisfying IHSAA rules on games played per week.

Essentially,
South Decatur and Triton Central will play
their junior varsity players in order to complete the game, with the result
being credited as a varsity competition.

Brownstown
Athletic Director Mark DeHart thought his school would be allowed to host North Harrison on Monday. DeHart explained that due to
heavy rains and flooding in the North Harrison area, the schools were concerned
with travel issues and thought it best to finish competition on Monday. After
consulting the IHSAA by-laws, DeHart said both schools felt it would be a mere
formality to gain an inclement weather exception by the commissioner.

However,
DeHart was surprised by the response of an IHSAA representative on Sunday. Following
attempted calls and e-mails to the IHSAA on Saturday, DeHart said he finally
reached the organization?s assistant commissioner in charge of football, Bobby
Cox, over the phone on Sunday. At that point, DeHart was informed the IHSAA
would not issue an exception for completion of that football game.

Brownstown
was even willing to give its players an extra day of rest by pushing the
Braves? Week 7 game back to Saturday but, despite that compromise and letters
and phone calls by the school?s principal, head coach, and AD, the IHSAA
refused an exception.

DeHart
said his school was very disappointed that Brownstown was not allowed to hold
the game, as it also eliminates any chance the Braves had at the Mid-Southern
Conference title. The game was projected as one of the top matchups in the
state between 4-1 Brownstown and visiting 5-0 rival North
Harrison.
