Carmel retains 118-point lead in second Hoosier Authority All-Sports Trophy race

By Bubba Harnist
All-Sports Trophy Figure Upper Guy

If Carmel wins the race for
the 2nd Annual Hoosier Authority All-Sports Trophy, the schools directly behind
the Greyhounds can look back at the last three scoring updates and wonder what
might have been. Thatâ??s because, for the third straight points update, Carmel received zero
points yet maintained its 118-point lead over second-place Chesterton.

This time
around, we calculated points using the new Hoosier Authority multiplier (see
story below for Mike McGrawâ??s
explanation). Since Carmel
participates in the maximum 20 IHSAA-sanctioned sports, the â??Hounds received
zero points. Ditto for Chesterton.

Thus, the
118-point lead was maintained.

The first
five did change a bit behind the top two schools. Hamilton Southeastern jumped
from fourth to third, North Central (Indianapolis) went from third to fourth,
and Indianapolis Cathedral (now fifth) swapped with Columbus North (currently sixth).

Rounding
out the Top 10 are Bloomington South staying seventh, Fort Wayne Dwenger remaining
eighth, Evansville Memorial re-entering the elite group at No. 9, and Valparaiso dropping one
spot to 10rh.

Falling
out of the Top 10 was Homestead,
which now sits 14th.

We have
calculated all of the winter sports and the multiplier that follows. From here
on out, updated standings will be coming to you fast and furious. In the next
few days, look for another update as we calculate the postseason points from
boys and girls track & field.

And stay
tuned for when we announce the official date to name the winner of the 2006-07
Hoosier Authority All-Sports Trophy!

SWAC Swim Team wins Indiana Open Water State Championship

By Chad Englehart

Homestead Swimming Coach

HUNTINGTON â??? Indiana Swimming hosted its 2007 Open Water Championships July 10
at Lake Claire
in Huntington. The
meet â??? the largest Open Water Championship event in state history â??? included more
than 300 athletes and 30 teams from around Indiana.

The SWAC
Swim Team from Fort Wayne
walked away with this yearâ??s championship trophy. SWAC finished with 488 points,
easily overpowering Hamilton Southeastern by over 200 points. SWACâ??s victory
marked the first time a team from outside the greater Indianapolis area had finished in the meetâ??s
top five.

The Fort Wayne area was very
well represented with three teams (Three Rivers Aquatic Club finished sixth and
Fort Wayne Aquatics was seventh, while Northwest Aquatic Club placed 21st)
finishing in the stateâ??s top seven.

Junior Nationals preview: Indiana's top Cadets

By Joe Caprino
Contributing Writer

FARGO, N.D. â??? What did you do this summer? That
will be a common question in the coming weeks for students all over the state.
Some will reply with the usual answers â??? went on vacation, worked summer jobs,
or just lounged around.

But there
are some that will reply with the unique answer of spent numerous nights in a
hot, humid, and sweaty wrestling room. For 54 Indiana
wrestlers, it will probably have been a dream summer, with the last stop coming
in late July in Fargo, North Dakota. Thatâ??s because theyâ??ve been
working tirelessly this summer in wrestling rooms all over the state for a
chance to become an All-American, or even a national champion, when they participate
July 21-26 in the Asics/Vaughn Cadet Nationals.

This
tournament is not for the weak. It involves wrestlers from all over the country
vying for a chance to be called a national champion. There will be more than 4,000
entrants in the two Olympic styles of wrestling: freestyle and Greco-Roman. (There
is also a division solely for womenâ??s freestyle, which is a sport that is
growing at the youth level in leaps and bounds.)

When the
athletes enter the Fargo Dome, they will come upon an indoor football field
like most have never seen before. On the turf will be 20-plus wrestling mats
spread out in wait for some intense action. Another thing that will stick out
is the one mat that stands out amongst the others. Simply known as Mat #1
during the tournament, this mat is on a platform for everyone to see, and itâ??s
where every wrestler wants to finish the tournament competing for a national
championship.

The Cadet
group is for wrestlers born in 1991 and 1992 (ages 15-16) and consists of 17 weight
classes ranging from 84 pounds all the way up to 285 pounds. These wrestlers
are typically freshmen and sophomores in high school. Last year, Team Indianaâ??s dual teams
finished with a 6-3 record in the freestyle division and 5-4 in the Greco-Roman
division, with a runner-up finish in the consolation bracket.

Indiana always has quite a few wrestlers on the podium in Fargo, and this year
should not be any different. Here are some Cadet wrestlers to watch:

Cody Phillips/Luke Schofield/Jacob
Tonte/John Petrov
Look for
Phillips to make a run at a spot on the podium at 84 pounds â??? he went 7-2 in
Greco-Roman and 6-3 in freestyle at the 2006 Cadet duals. Schofield will be a
contender for an All-American finish after going 6-3 in Greco-Roman at the
Cadet duals at 105. Perry Meridian state placer Tonte will look to place at 112
after getting a taste of the action last year in Fargo. Also at 112, John Petrov will look to
finish on the podium.

Taylor March/Will Mascaro/Sammy
Bennett/Kyle Mosier
At 130,
two-time state runner-up March will look to finish high on the podium in his
first trip to Fargo.
Will Mascaro, a state qualifier at 125 this year for Carmel, will look to make an impact after
going 6-3 in Greco-Roman and 4-4 in freestyle at the Cadet duals. Two 145-pounders
to look out for are Sammy Bennett (6-3 in Greco-Roman at the Cadet duals and a
state qualifier at 140 as a freshman for Anderson Highland) and Kyle Mosier (fourth
at this yearâ??s state finals for Yorktown and
an impressive 7-2 in the freestyle duals).

Cameron Vlahos/Mark Myers/Damon
Jones/Aaron Stevenson
At 152,
look for Vlahos to make a mark â??? he has numerous state and national accolades
to his credit. Mark Myers of Crown
Point
, another heavily medaled Hoosier, will look to
finish high on the podium at 160. Damon Jones is a name to look for at 171 after
he finished 7-2 at the Cadet duals in freestyle. Also at 171, look for Aaron
Stevenson to do well after a 5-1 freestyle finish at the Cadet duals.

Dylan Froelich/Joe Arthur
Two big
guys to look out for are Dylan Froelich at 215 and Joe Arthur at 285. Froelich went
7-2 in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the Cadet duals, while Arthur finished
a perfect 9-0 in Greco-Roman and 8-1 in freestyle at the duals.

Hamilton Heights coach Stirn resigns, faces alcohol charge

The Noblesville Ledger

NOBLESVILLE â??? Former Hamilton Heights
High School football
coach Steve Stirn is facing a criminal charge.

Hamilton
County Sheriff Doug Carter said July 20 his office submitted paperwork to the Hamilton County prosecutor to charge Stirn with
furnishing alcohol to a minor, a Class C misdemeanor. Stirn is to appear in
court Aug. 8.

In a
prepared statement, Carter said several witnesses saw Stirn provide alcohol to
a minor while attending the Kenny Chesney concert July 12 at Verizon Wireless
Music Center.

In the
probable cause affidavit, a witness indicated Stirn gave a former female
student between four and six beers while at the show.

The
investigation is closed unless new information comes to light, he added. Carter
said a computer belonging to Stirn will be given to a forensic analyst.

â??The whole
situation is very unfortunate,â? Carter said. â??We need to know, â??Is there
somebody out there that might need additional help from us?â?? So whether itâ??s
coach Stirn or another member of our community, particularly a person charged
with public trust, weâ??ll work until we’re done.â?

Stirn
resigned his coaching and teaching positions July 18, citing â??personal and
family reasons. The Hamilton Heights School Board accepted his resignation in
a meeting July 19.

Stirn, 40,
earned $40,042 as a teacher and $5,703 as a coach. He had a record of 72-35 in
nine years at Heights and guided the Huskies to four consecutive sectional
titles (2002-05) and the schoolâ??s first regional crown in 2003.

Stirn resigned last spring to accept a position at Jasper High School,
but a week later changed his mind and returned to Heights.

Indiana State Excise Police arrested 52 people at the Chesney concert on
alcohol violations, but Stirn was not among those, according to Lt. Dan Rose.
The excise police is the law-enforcement division of the Alcohol and Tobacco
Commission and has officers at every Verizon concert.

The penalty for a Class C misdemeanor is up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Previews: Top 50 '07 girls cross country teams (Nos. 11-15)

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Running Sports Coordinator

Prior to the start of the 2007 girls cross country season, HoosierAuthority.com will bring you daily previews of our Top 50 teams. Here are Nos. 11-15 â?¦

#15 Indianapolis Cathedral Fighting Irish

Franklin Central Semistate #7

Brebeuf Regional #5

2006 Results:

Brebeuf Sectional: 3rd place (55 points)

Brebeuf Regional: 3rd place (79 points)

Franklin Central Semistate: 7th place (184 points)

Returning Runners (based on results from the Franklin Central Semistate):

Katy Achtien (11) â??? 14:45 (9th place)

Paige Mason (10) â??? 15:20 (33rd place)

Rose Plomin (12) â??? 15:55 (66th place)

Maria Eubanks (12) â??? 16:14 (89th place)

2007 Outlook:

Cathedral has been gradually slipping since its podium finish in 2004. The Irish finished third that year after winning the Franklin Central Semistate. Since then, the Irish have finished their season with a sixth-place finish at the state finals and a seventh-place finish at semistate. With a coaching change taking place this summer, Cathedral hopes to return to Terre Haute this fall. The team will face tough advancement at every level, going through the Brebeuf Regional before the semistate race. If the Irish can find a fifth and get to the semistate level, theyâ??ve got a shot at going the distance for the fifth time in six years.

#14 Western Panthers

New Prairie Semistate #5

2006 Results:

Marion Sectional: 1st place (50 points)

Marion Regional: 3rd place (109 points)

New Haven Semistate: 8th place (255 points)

Returning Runners (based on results from the New Haven Semistate):

Katie Hollingsworth (12) â??? 15:47 (24th place)

Jen Elliott (11) â??? 16:11 (44th place)

Kelsey Durr (10) â??? 16:48 (78th place)

Kiley Camp (11) â??? 16:55 (91st place)

Lacey Meyer (11) â??? 17:00 (97th place)

Vee Weitbrecht (10) â??? 17:13 (109th place)

2007 Outlook:

Westernâ??s returners donâ??t appear to be among the stateâ??s Top 20, but the Panthers should be boosted by the arrival of freshman phenom Waverly Neer. Neer, the daughter of Western coach Dana Neer, has been posting elite-level times on par with the likes of Alex Banfich and Chelsea Blanchard for a couple years now. How good she will be at the next level will be interesting, but the frosh should undoubtedly help her teamâ??s chances. Western, which is switching to the New Prairie Semistate after years at New Haven/Manchester, may also benefit from the added team getting a bid to state. The Panthers have finished sixth multiple times at the semistate level in the past.

#13 Chesterton Trojans

New Prairie Semistate #4

2006 Results:

Chesterton Sectional: 3rd place (72 points)

New Prairie Regional: 4th place (100 points)

New Prairie Semistate: 7th place (202 points)

Returning Runners (based on results from the New Prairie Semistate):

Malorie Crafton (12) â??? 16:15 (44th place)

Tina Guidarelli (11) â??? 16:19 (48th place)

Milana Socha (10) â??? 16:20 (50th place)

Emily Allmon (11) â??? 16:20 (51st place)

Shannon Harvey (10) â??? 16:40 (71st place)

2007 Outlook:

Traditionally one of the stateâ??s best, Chesterton found itself in unfamiliar territory after not advancing to the state finals last season. A seventh-place semistate finish ended more than a decade-long streak of qualifying for the state meet. Expect the Trojans to come roaring back this fall. Chesterton brings back five solid runners from last yearâ??s squad and should be led by senior Malorie Crafton, a 3200 state finalist from two seasons ago. If the pack can stay close together, as they did at last yearâ??s semistate, and move up slightly from previous performances, a return trip to the familiar state finals should be in order.

#12 West Lafayette Red Devils

New Prairie Semistate #3

2006 Results:

Harrison (West Lafayette) Sectional: 1st place (21 points)

Harrison (West Lafayette) Regional: 1st place (27 points)

New Prairie Semistate: 2nd place (110 points)

IHSAA State Finals: 11th place (271 points)

Returning Runners (based on results from the New Prairie Semistate):

Linsey Daluga (11) â??? 15:03 (5th place)

Kelsey Lewark (11) â??? 15:56 (22nd place)

Emily Hollenback (12) â??? 16:33 (59th place)

Kathleen Yehle (12) â??? 16:55 (89th place)

2007 Outlook:

West Lafayette will be hampered by a few graduation losses but returns a good portion of last yearâ??s 11th-place state team. One of those runners is junior Linsey Daluga, a two-time All-Stater who should be at the front in every race this season. The Red Devils may struggle to be competitive on the state level, but they should have no problems defending their sectional and regional titles. Expect to see senior Laura Grabowski join the varsity after running in some of the bigger meets last season.

#11 Bloomington North Cougars

Bedford North Lawrence Semistate #1

2006 Results:

Brown County Sectional: 1st place (36 points)

Brown County Regional: 1st place (45 points)

Bloomington North Semistate: 2nd place (115 points)

IHSAA State Finals: 19th place (447 points)

Returning Runners (based on results the Bloomington North Semistate):

Molly Hirt (12) â??? 16:02 (12th place)

Zoe Withered (10) â??? 16:05 (15th place)

Julia Puntarelli (11) â??? 16:40 (36th place)

Pricella Hung (12) â??? 16:50 (44th place)

Rachel Irvine (12) â??? 17:13 (63rd place)

Maggie Wagner (11) â??? 17:50 (97th place)

Haley Holland (10) â??? 17:53 (99th place)

2007 Outlook:

After falling just short of a semistate title last year, Bloomington North returns as the top team in the south this year. The Cougars bring back all of last yearâ??s roster, including senior Molly Hirt, who has qualified for three state finals (two in track, one in cross). BN should have no problems getting out of the semistate and could challenge for a Top 10 finish at the state meet. With Hirt and sophomore Zoe Withered, the Cougars could have two in the Top 50 at Terre Haute.
