GBB: 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian stays perfect, 57-50, at 4A #6 Carmel

By Tanner Blackburn
HoosierAuthority.com

CARMEL – The magic number in the highly anticipated Jan. 22 showdown between Class 2A top-ranked Heritage Christian and 4A No. 6 Carmel was 46. As in, the visiting Eagles shot 46 percent in the first half … 46 percent in the second half … and 46 percent for the game.

Their two leading scorers at 18 points apiece were #34 junior forward Kelly Faris and #12 junior guard Claire Freeman – 34 + 12 = 46. If you throw in the 10 points from the two-time defending state champion’s other double-digit scorer, junior guard Emily Anderson, you get 18 + 18 + 10 equals …

You guessed it. Forty-six. If only the temperature outside had approached the play of coach Rick Risinger’s threepeat-bound bunch in Heritage Christian’s 57-50 victory that avenged the Eagles’ last loss, a 60-59 thriller to Carmel a year ago.

Carmel, on the other hand, did not shoot nearly as well or score as easily. The Greyhounds certainly weren’t helped by going 5 of 26 from behind the 3-point arc.

“We didn’t shoot very many contested shots, so we gotta step up and knock ’em in in a game like that,” said Carmel fifth-year coach Scott Bowen. “We had chances. Hats off to them – they knocked ‘em in and we didn’t.

“It was a pretty good game – a pretty good game to watch, hopefully, for the fans.”

One thing that Carmel did do well on this night was force turnovers as Heritage Christian coughed it up 18 times, including 13 steals by the Greyhounds. Trailing 53-50, Carmel was in the game until an uncontested layup with 1:10 to play by 6’1” freshman center Liz Stratman.

“We’ve gotta control turnovers a little better,” said Heritage Christian third-year coach Rick Risinger. “Their offense feeds off turnovers.”

With the exception of a 12-0 run late in the first quarter that gave Carmel a brief 18-16 lead, the ’Hounds found themselves in catch-up mode virtually the entire game. Carmel’s two stars, guard Chrissy Steffen and forward Danielle Havel, were held to a combined 25 points – a remarkable defensive feat for the Eagles considering Steffen scored 30 points in a win over 4A No. 10 Terre Haute South just three days prior.

“We knew that was their main offensive threat, and with two different styles,” Risinger said. “We wanted some of them to take threes. Steffen is outstanding, so we didn’t want her takin’ ’em.”

The Eagles, meanwhile, shot lights-out for the night.

Freeman was 4 of 6 from 3-point territory. Anderson was a perfect 4 of 4 from the field. Farris, who does it all for the Eagles, was 2 of 3 from behind the arc and 6 of 7 from in closer.

“Our last game we were 12 of 17 on threes, so we’re working on it,” Risinger said of the Eagles’ deadly distance shooting.

All those turnovers by the Eagles gave Carmel’s offense a chance at victory, but a handful of shots went in-and-out for the ’Hounds.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” Bowen said. “Our two leading scorers coming in … I don’t know what they were combined, but it wasn’t good. When it counted, their kids knocked in shouts and our kids didn’t.

“Chrissy had a lot of good looks, and she’s gonna make those – she’s gonna keep shootin ‘em.”

It was those unlucky bounces, along with a never-panic outlook by Heritage Christian, that allowed the Eagles to stay unbeaten.

“We really do not look at the record, look backwards,” Risinger said when asked about the possibility of a perfect season bringing a third consecutive state championship.

Carmel fans are hoping that the high-powered duo of Steffen and Havel will step it up in the Greyhounds’ second monster game of the week, Jan. 25 at 4A top-ranked Ben Davis, in a battle for the Metropolitan Interscholastic crown. The Greyhounds and Giants both have one loss in conference play, the same as 4A third-ranked North Central (Indianapolis).

“Oh, yeah – it’s a great test,” Bowen said of playing huge games right before sectionals start in two weeks. “We got two days of practice and then we go play No. 1 Ben Davis. We had a chance to make it a real special week, and we can still make it somewhat special and go over and knock off Ben Davis.

“We’re still in the hunt for the MIC championship, so we’ve got big plans for Friday. Hopefully, we can shoot a little better and play as hard as we always do.”

GBB RANKINGS: Ben Davis, Wawasee bump SB Washington, Twin Lakes

It took until Week 11 of the 2007-08 girls basketball season, but Ben Davis has finally knocked defending state champion South Bend Washington out of the top spot in Class 4A. In the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association’s 11th set of polls, coach Stan Benge’s Giants are the new No. 1 following South Bend Washington’s second loss of the year to an out-of-state power.

And there’s a new No. 1 in 3A as well after Twin Lakes was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten by fellow 3A undefeated Northwestern (up from ninth to fifth this week). Defending state runner-up Wawasee now resides in 3A’s top spot, with Twin Lakes falling to third behind Fort Wayne Elmhurst. Five different schools received first-place votes this week in the state’s second-largest class.

The other No. 1s – 2A Heritage Christian and 1A Oregon-Davis – maintain their superiority over the state’s second-smallest and smallest classifications, respectively, while seven new schools enter the polls this week.

Defending state runner-up Columbus East moves into 12th in 4A, where Decatur Central (13th) and Highland (17th) also appear. Bloomfield, the state’s first-ever runner-up back in 1976 and the 1998 1A state champion, is now 15th in 2A. And Tri (10th), Southern Wells (12th), and New Washington (18th) all enter the 1A list.

Teams are listed by current ranking followed by school, number of first-place votes if applicable, record, and vote total. Your 64 ranked schools from Jan. 21:

BB RANKINGS: ‘Tickling the Twine’ Top 15s

By Chris May
Boys Basketball Coordinator

After taking a week off, we’re on to Week 10 of the 2007-08 Indiana high school boys basketball season – time for the seventh set of “Tickling the Twine” Top 15s rankings. Each week, I’ll update my rankings to reflect how well (or poorly) a team has played of late. Prior to postseason play, you’ll see my final rankings.

The Twine Tops 15s from Jan. 21…

Class 4A

1. New
Albany
(14-0)

The Bulldogs have rolled along, with their closest game
in the last two weeks a 14-point win at Jim Shannon’s alma mater, Anderson. This week will
see games at 7-5 Evansville North and home against 8-5 Jasper.

2. Carmel
(12-0)

Carmel moves up as the
Greyhounds continued their unbeaten season with two wins last week, 91-67 over
Pike and 66-58 at MIC opponent Terre Haute South. Against Pike, the ’Hounds
held their opponent to four points in the first quarter and got five players in
double figures, including point guard Daniel
Moore
, who also dished out 15 assists and who has had 12 or more assists in
three of his last five games. Carmel
plays Hamilton Southeastern Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.

3. Chesterton
(14-0)

A remarkable season is continuing in Chesterton, with the Trojans steamrolling
most of their competition. They’ve played just four games that were decided by
single digits, and senior Zack
Novak
continues to pour it on as he is third in the state in scoring at 29
points per game and also averages 7.4 rebounds. Five of the Trojans’ six
remaining games are Duneland Conference matchups, including Friday against Lake Central.

4. Marion
(12-2)

The Giants have won five in a row since their losses at
the Hall of Fame Classic, most recently topping North Central Conference rival Anderson, 59-54. Sharp-shooting
Scott
Wood
has overtaken Julius
Mays
as the team’s leading scorer, with Wood scoring more than 20 points in
four of the last five games. This weekend Marion
plays at conference opponent Richmond,
then faces Al Rhodes’ 6-7 Fort Wayne Northrop Bruins.

5. Bloomington
South
(13-0)

The Panthers have won four games in the last two weeks,
including significant wins over 3A No. 1 Edgewood and at Conference Indiana opponent
Franklin Central. A lone conference game, home against Pike on Friday, is the
only contest for J.R. Holmes’ team this week.

6. Lawrence
North
(12-2)

The Wildcats have won five in a row through their
Marion County Tournament championship and Friday’s 11-point win over North
Central (Indianapolis).
Junior guard Kyree
Jones
has come around, scoring 28 points against North Central, and is the
key to a successful postseason for the Wildcats.

7. Indianapolis
Cathedral
(12-1)

The Irish have won four since their 15-point loss
against 4A No. 2 Carmel, including their third straight Indianapolis City
Tournament championship with a win over 3A No. 3 Indianapolis Howe Academy. The
Irish have an outside-in game that starts with senior Sean
Esposito
and junior Patrick
Paligraf
, who can nail threes. Cathedral takes on Arlington
and 4A No. 12 Evansville
Reitz this weekend, both away from home.

8. East
Chicago
Central (9-3)

The Cardinals went 2-1 last week with the loss coming
Saturday against Crown Point.
This week, ECC is taking on Toledo Scott (Ohio) on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and
going to Gary West Thursday.

9. Warren
Central
(11-4)

After starting the season 11-1, the Warriors have
dropped three in a row to slip to 11-4. The losses, to Lawrence North, Southport, and Terre Haute North, were all on the road. Saturday’s
game against 4A No. 11 North Central at Conseco Fieldhouse is no gimme, either.

10. Lafayette
Jefferson
(13-1)

The Bronchos have made the move into the Twine Top 10
as they ride an eight-game winning streak and saw a couple of teams ahead of
them drop. Jeff’s latest wins came against a respectable Kokomo
team and a blowout victory at Harrison. It
will be a big week of regional games as they’ll host in-town rival 1A No. 2
Lafayette Central Catholic on Friday, then go to Benton Central on Saturday.

The next five:

11. North
Central (Indianapolis)
(9-5)

The Panthers, like Warren Central, have lost three in a
row (to Warren, Lawrence North, and 9-5 Muncie Central). Someone’s streak will
end Saturday, however, when Warren Central and North Central meet at Conseco
Fieldhouse. Although Doug Mitchell’s team opened its season with nine wins in its
first 11 games, nothing will come easy from here out. The Panthers’ remaining
seven games come against teams that are a combined 69-25 this season.

12. Evansville
Reitz
(8-4)

The Panthers lost to 3A No. 5 Evansville Memorial 78-68
last week but came back with a win over 1A Fall Creek 21st Century,
ending their streak of four losses in their previous five games. Evansville
Bosse, Evansville Central (whom Reitz lost to in the SIAC tournament), and 4A
No. 7 Cathedral are on the Panthers’ schedule for this busy week.

13. Fort
Wayne South
(11-3)

The Archers took an overtime loss to Fort Wayne Snider
since our last rankings, but have since beaten Northrop and North in Fort Wayne action. They
play at 4-8 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran this Friday.

14. Terre
Haute
South (11-4)

The Braves are 11-0 in non-conference games but have
yet to capture a MIC victory. Mike Saylor’s team must take a little solace that
three of the teams to beat them are ahead of them in these rankings – 4A No. 2
Carmel, 4A No. 6 Lawrence North, and 4A No. 9 Warren Central – as well as a
four-loss 4A Center Grove team. Friday night is the battle for Terre Haute with 8-5 Terre Haute North and a
chance for a conference win.

15. Brownsburg
(11-3)

The Bulldogs have rattled off nine straight wins after
some early season difficulties. Without Julian
Mavunga
, Brownsburg lost its first two games of the season and sat at 2-3
in early December after a loss to Batesville. Josh Kendrick’s team seems to
have found its stride since then, and the 6’8” Miami (OH) signee Mavunga is
averaging 18.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. In the Bulldogs’ recent 70-40 drubbing
of Center Grove, Mavunga scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds. Brownsburg is
6-0 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play and go to conference opponent
Noblesville Friday.

Class 3A

1. Edgewood
(11-2)

The Mustangs just completed a five-game road trip which
included a 65-58 loss at Bloomington South, their second loss of the season. Garrett
Butcher
was held to 19 points and 10 rebounds in that game and is averaging
around 26 and nine this season. Point guard Tommy
Weakley
would still be a steal for someone at the next level – he hit six
of eight three-pointers against South and is shooting 50% behind the arc while
averaging 16 points this season. Edgewood hosts West Vigo and Monrovia this weekend.

2. Batesville
(11-2)

The Bulldogs have won five in a row, including a close
45-42 win at Franklin
County
and are 7-0 in
Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference play. This weekend Alex Grimsley, Colt
Ryan, and crew will play a pair of small schools, but very good ones. 9-6 North
Decatur comes to Ripley
County
on Friday night
with a date against 2A No. 4 12-1 Hauser at Noon Saturday at Conseco
Fieldhouse.

3. Indianapolis
Howe Academy
(9-5)

The Hornets’ most recent setback came at the hands of
4A No. 7 Cathedral in the championship of the Indianapolis City Tournament,
64-60, in their second loss to the Irish this season. All of Howe’s losses have
come to 4A schools and four of those five losses are against teams ranked in
this Twine Top 10. Friday night’s game at Indianapolis Tech is almost like a
home game – the Hornets’ last three games were at Tech during the City
Tournament including an 80-61 win over Tech.

4. Washington
(11-2)

Pardon me if it sounds like I’m gushing over Tyler
Zeller
’s numbers, but we all should be. The 7-footer’s stats over the
weekend were 39 and 38 points and a combined 22 rebounds and six blocks in wins
over Princeton and Pike Central. I’m guessing
plenty of non-Washingtonians are ready for Zeller to be in Chapel
Hill
– he’s only averaging a state best 31.8 points, 9.8 rebounds,
and 2.5 assists and two blocks while shooting 72, yes 72, percent from the
field and 86 percent from the free throw line. There, gushing over. Washington has won nine
straight and take on 2-11 Boonville and 4-12 Sullivan this weekend.

5. Evansville
Memorial
(10-1)

The Tigers have won three in a row including recently
exacting revenge on 4A No. 12 Evansville
Reitz for their lone loss of the season, 78-68. A challenging weekend presents
11-3 Princeton and 5-5 2A Evansville Mater Dei
for Rick Wilgus’ team.

6. Northwestern (11-0)
Undefeated, yes. Toughest schedule, no. No offense to
the Tigers, but last season’s 2A State Champs are working their way through
another successful regular season but the Sagarin ratings have their schedule
as the 243rd toughest in the state. That will get a boost upward
with their Tuesday game against 9-2 2A No. 9 North Miami. Don’t look too far around the
corner, but we may be speeding toward a meeting of undefeated February 1 with
Northwest at 2A No. 2 Tipton.

7. Indianapolis
Northwest
(11-2)

Look at this
profile of Northwest’s 6’5” senior Alex Young
and you’ll note he’s listed
as a forward, power forward, point guard, shooting guard, and center. That’s no
exaggeration as the long, athletic player does a lot for the Space Pioneers and
is someone you should definitely know about. Averaging 19.6 points and 13.5
rebounds on the season, Young helped guide Northwest to the semifinals of last
week’s City Tournament before being beaten again by Cathedral – the only team
to beat them this season. Young turned in 26 points and 13 rebounds against the
4A No. 7 Irish, only nights after a game of 24, 16, and six blocks against
Manual. It’s a Washington weekend for Victor
Bush’s team, who will host Indianapolis Washington Friday and 13-3 South Bend Washington
Saturday. I guess the Washington Hatchets weren’t available to play this
weekend, although a postseason meeting isn’t totally out of the question.

8. Harding (12-1)
Al Gooden’s Hawks turned a previous loss to 2A No. 1 Fort
Wayne Luers completely around by beating Luers by 10 in last week’s conference
game, making Harding 5-0 in Summit
play. They’ll take it light this week with just one game, Friday at home
against 6-6 Fort Wayne Wayne.

9. Indianapolis
Chatard
(10-1)

Chatard suffered their first loss of the season in last
week’s Indianapolis City Tournament at the hands of Indianapolis Washington
in the quarterfinals. This week is a mid-week rematch with Broad Ripple, whom
the Trojans beat 66-63 in overtime in last week’s tournament, then at Brebeuf
Friday. Leading scorer Jimmy
Kennedy
scored a season-high 27 in the loss to Washington – the second time he’s hit seven
three-pointers this season.

10. South Bend St. Joseph’s (11-2)
The once 10-0 Indians have alternated losses and wins
in their last three games, including a pair of seven point losses to St. Joseph
(MI) and Penn.
This week is a mid-week affair with Culver
Academy
and a Friday
night game with 11-3 South Bend Clay, both at home.

The next five:

11. Rochester
(10-2)

Junior point guard Bruce
Grimm, Jr.
is having a terrific year for the Zebras. Averaging 20 points
and five assists, he and senior Kory
Barnett
are the top scoring threats for a team that has jumped up to 3A
this season. Both of the Zebras’ losses have been to 3As – Plymouth
and Tippecanoe Valley
– but this week will be paired with 2As, LaVille and Northfield.

12. Yorktown
(10-2)

Continuing their successes into the New Year, Judd
Moulton’s Tigers have a big week awaiting. After a win against Rushville last
week in which Emerson
Kampen
scored 26 points – 25 of them in the second half – Yorktown goes to
2A No. 3 Winchester then plays the likely Hoosier Heritage Conference
championship game home against New Palestine on Friday.

13. Danville
(10-3)

Big players come through in big games, right? That’s
what 6’8” sophomore Travis
Carroll
has done. In conference wins at North Montgomery and Western Boone
the past two weeks that given Danville a great shot at the Sagamore Conference
regular season title, Carroll had games of 28 points and 21 rebounds, then 17
points and 16 rebounds.

14. Roncalli
(8-2)

Newcomers to the Twine this season, the Rebels have
done well in January with a 50-45 loss to 4A No. 11 North Central in the Marion
County Tournament their only loss since December. Junior Aaron
Evans
has overtaken some of the scoring void left by the graduation of Paul
Corsaro and Joe Britner from last year’s team, averaging 15.8.

15. Plymouth
(10-2)

The Pilgrims have won four in a row stretching back to
December and are 3-0 in Northern Lakes Conference play with two coming up this
week. Wednesday Concord comes to Plymouth
and they’ll be home again on Friday against 8-4 Northridge.

Class 2A

1. Fort
Wayne Luers
(10-3)

The Knights lost a nine game winning streak when they
lost to 2A No. 8 Harding over the weekend and are now 4-3 in Summit play. Home games against Angola and Fort
Wayne Elmhurst this week are winnable and they should be 12-3 entering
February.

2. Tipton
(12-0)

The Blue Devils got wins No. 11 and 12 over the weekend
against Benton Central and winning at 4A Kokomo
on Saturday, 60-56, both special wins. Beating Benton Central gave Travis
Daugherty’s group a 6-0 finish to a Hoosier Conference Championship season,
while Saturday’s win at Kokomo
snapped a 13-game losing streak in that series. IU bound junior Derek Elston
clobbered the Wildkats with 32 points and 15 rebounds Saturday.

3. Winchester
(10-3)

Maybe it’s karma. A week after beating
Hagerstown 124-32
, the Golden Falcons lost at Jay County
46-44 this past Friday, scoring
just three third quarter points
. The career-high 40 points Tyler
Koch
scored against Hagerstown
has boosted his average to 22.4. They’ll host 3A No. 12 Yorktown
on Tuesday then host conference opponent 1-12 Tri on the weekend.

4. Hauser
(12-1)

Wins over Waldron and South Ripley this past weekend
have the Jets at 12-1 entering a weekend that is capped off by an appearance in
Conseco Fieldhouse, the site of their 2006 1A State Championship victory. Friday
they’ll host conference opponent South Decatur, then head to Indianapolis to face 3A No. 2 Batesville
Saturday at noon in one of this week’s best matchups.

5. Westview
(13-1)

The Warriors have won 12 straight since an overtime
loss to 4A Northridge in their second game of the season. That streak includes
a win at Fairfield
and a 48-38 home win over 2A No. 7 Jimtown Saturday. A game at 6-8 Northeast
Corner Conference opponent Eastside comes Friday.

6. Bluffton (13-0)
See 2A No. 6 Northwestern. Undefeated, yes. Toughest
schedule, far from it. Ranked as the 286th toughest schedule in the
state, only one of the 10 teams Bluffton has beaten (they’ve played three teams
twice) has a winning record as of this writing. Additionally, there are only
three teams on the remainder of their regular season schedule that currently
have winning records. This is meant to be no indictment of their players or
coach Wayne Barker, but it’s tough to say they’re the best in the state when
they simply haven’t faced good competition.

7. Jimtown (10-3)
The Jimmies’ 48-38 loss at 2A No. 5 Westview last week
snapped an eight game winning streak for Randy DeShone’s team and the 48 points
were the most they’ve given up this season. Things don’t look any easier this
weekend with a trip to 1A No. 1 Triton set for Friday night.

8. Guerin
Catholic
(11-3)

Guerin won at home over 3A Brebeuf on Friday for their
11th win of the season as season leader junior Ryan
Nowicki
once again led the team with 23 points – his third straight game
with over 20 – and senior Dan
Payntor
had 22. The Golden Eagles make a sizable trip to Oldenburg Academy
Saturday night.

9. North Miami
(9-2)

The Warriors pushed their winning streak to six with
weekend wins over Wabash and 1A No. 14 West
Central, and now turn around to put the streak on the line at undefeated 3A No.
6 Northwestern Tuesday. They’ve also got a very good 8-4 Southwood team coming
to Miami County on Friday.

10. Taylor
(8-3)

Jeff Fisher’s Titans beat Peru and Clinton Central over the
weekend. This Friday they’ll go to 1-12 Eastern (Greentown) in a Mid-Indiana
Conference game that could get them above .500 in conference play.

The next five:

11. Oak
Hill
(10-3)

After losing their first two games of 2008, the Golden
Eagles have beaten Eastbrook and Alexandria
on successive Fridays for a 4-0 Central Indiana Conference record. They’ll look
to continue that mark Friday playing at 9-4 Madison-Grant.

12. Paoli
(11-1)

Joe Hinton knows a thing or two about winning. His Rams
have won 10 straight after weekend victories over Springs
Valley and Southridge and are looking
at 5-7 Corydon Central on Friday then a showdown with 12-2 Tell City
on Saturday. Senior Drew
White
and sophomore Logan
Laswell
are both scoring over 15 points a game for Paoli.

13. Forest
Park
(8-4)

The Rangers played a pair of close games over the
weekend with a win and loss. They dropped a game 65-63 at Jasper, then won
72-69 against 2A No. 14 South Knox the next night. They’ll conclude a five game
homestand with games against Crawford
County
and Tecumseh this
week.

14. South Knox (9-4)
The Spartans split last weekend beating North Posey by
six, but losing by three at 2A No. 13 Forest
Park
, their fourth loss of the season. South Knox goes
to a pair of sectional opponents, North Knox and Linton-Stockton this week.

15. Tell
City
(12-2)

The Marksmen have put together a nine game midseason
win streak, with their most recent additions at Hancock County (KY) and 70-65
at Crawford County this past weekend. Tell City has
eight seniors this year, but leading the balanced attack is junior Andy
Chinn
, who scored a season-high 22 at Crawford County
and is now averaging 13.8 per game.

Class A

1. Triton
(12-0)

The Trojans stayed perfect with 20- and 25-point wins
over Elkhart Christian and Bethany Christian this past weekend. The big game this
week is Triton hosting 10-3 2A No. 7 Jimtown Friday, with the Northern State
Conference championship likely decided in that game – both teams are 3-0 in
conference.

2. Lafayette
Central Catholic
(8-4)

The Knights beat Clinton Prairie and Frankfort over the weekend, with the
significance being that their Friday game with Clinton Prairie was their first
game against a 1A team this season. LCC has a big rematch against 4A No. 10
Lafayette Jeff, who beat them 67-64 earlier in the season, this Friday. They’ll
host 5-7 Attica on Saturday.

3. Orleans
(13-0)

Tom Bradley’s Bulldogs continued their streak with a
76-66 win over Perry Central in their lone game last week. Senior guard Jacob
Smith
was 13-16 overall from the field for 30 points, boosting his average close
to 23 points per game. Orleans goes to Borden
then hosts Bloomfield
this weekend, two teams that are each four games above .500.

4. Jac-Cen-Del
(11-1)

23 and 29 point wins over Shawe Memorial and Union County
have given the Eagles a four game winning streak since their loss to 3A No. 2
Batesville. In the win over Union
County
, JCD
got five players in double figures
, something that has been fairly common
this season. Saturday night they’ll go to 3-9 South
Dearborn
.

5. Fort
Wayne Blackhawk Christian
(9-2)

The Braves got big scoring nights from different
players in wins over Lakewood
Park
and Elkhart
Christian, upping their record to 9-2. In a 71-47 win over Lakewood, 6’6”
sophomore Russell
Byrd
had 21 points and 12 rebounds, while 6’5” center Wes
Deason
scored a season high 23 points in the win over Elkhart Christian. The
Braves play at 6-7 Bethany Christian this weekend.

6. Rockville
(12-1)

Wabash River Conference wins over North Vermillion and
Turkey Run over the weekend have put Rockville
at 12-1 and 3-0 in conference. 6’5” junior Aaron
Bridge
led the Rox with back-to-back 21 point games. This weekend brings
conference road games at Riverton Parke and Seeger, who is the only other
unbeaten in conference.

7. North Daviess (13-2)
Brent Dalrymple’s Cougars won at Linton-Stockton Friday
and picked up a huge 51-50 double overtime win over county and sectional rival
1A No. 9 Barr-Reeve on Saturday, as Aaron Harbstreit put in a basket with 3
seconds left in the second overtime. Winners of eight straight, the Cougars go
to 9-4 Clay City on Friday.

8. Indianapolis
Lutheran (11-3)

The Saints split games last week, but aren’t hurt by
their loss. Lutheran got beat by 3A No. 14 Roncalli at home during the week,
then picked up a good win, 57-49, at previously ranked Triton Central on
Saturday. The Saints have an early week game against a talented Indiana Deaf
team then play at 9-3 Beech Grove on Friday.

9. Barr-Reeve
(10-4)

Some good news is that Barr-Reeve is still undefeated
in Blue Chip Conference play, but they also suffered a double overtime loss to
a sectional rival in this past weekend’s games. After winning 52-46 against
Oakland City Wood Memorial on Friday, the Vikings lost at home 51-50 in double
overtime against 1A No. 7 North Daviess, a
team they could face again in March. They’ll go to 9-4 Shakamak this Friday.

10. Tecumseh
(12-2)

In the midst of a stretch of five straight road games,
the Braves have done just fine. Their fourth game of the stretch was a 59-50
win at Springs Valley, meaning they’ve won five in a
row. The next two games for Tecumseh, 4-0 in conference, will likely determine
the Pocket Conference champion, as they are at 2A No. 13 Forest Park this
Friday and will host 3A Gibson Southern the following weekend.

The next five:

11. South
Newton
(9-2)

The Rebels won at Frontier and home against Fountain
Central to get their eighth and ninth wins of the season. Ben
Welsh
continued to lead South Newton, as
he scored team-highs of 23 and 18 points in the two wins and averages 17.7
points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. The Rebels are at 2-10 North White and
host 7-6 South Central (Union Mills) this weekend.

12. Morgan
Township
(12-2)

After losing their opening two games of the season, the
Cherokees have rolled 12 straight wins into this week’s games. Last week Morgan Township
won three games in the Porter County Tournament, capped by a 41-32 championship
win over South Central (Union Mills), who gave the Cherokees one of their
previous losses in November. Colin McCartt’s team hosts Hanover Central and
goes to Oregon-Davis – both of whom have losing records – this weekend.

13. Northeast Dubois (7-5)
The Jeeps went 1-1 last week, but a look at their five
losses indicates they’re still a team to watch out for. NE Dubois has lost to
1A No. 3 Orleans, 2A No. 13 Forest Park, 1A No. 9 Barr-Reeve, 2A No. 12
Paoli, and 9-4 Vincennes Rivet on the season. They beat Loogootee on Saturday
night and now turn their attention to trips to Jasper and Oakland City Wood
Memorial for the weekend.

14. West
Central
(9-4)

After beating conference opponent Pioneer, West Central
got loss No. 4 when 2A No. 9 North
Miami
beat them 50-39 on Saturday. Bryan Heimlich’s
team hosts 2-10 Winamac then goes to 5-7 John Glenn this weekend.

15. Wes-Del
(7-5)

The Warriors, who have spread wins and losses
throughout their season won back-to-back games over the weekend toppling 3A
Delta and winning at Southern Wells. The 69-48 win over 11-3 Delta was one of
the most notable scores from last week and ended a streak of four losses in
Wes-Del’s previous five games. The Warriors go to Shenandoah then host Cowan,
neither having particularly strong seasons, this weekend.

GBB RANKINGS: Power poll + big games

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

Just over two weeks before sectionals, the girls basketball picture is still relatively unclear. A host of upsets last week – eight Top 20 teams in the IBCA poll were defeated – illustrate the parity around Indiana.

Regardless, I still like South Bend Washington, Heritage Christian, and Oregon-Davis to defend their crowns from last season. Class 3A is still a mystery at the moment.

The HoosierAuthority.com power poll from Jan. 21:

1. South Bend Washington (16-2)
2. Heritage Christian (18-0)
3. Ben Davis (18-1)
4. Oak Hill (16-0)
5. North Central (Indianapolis) (13-3)
6. Carmel (15-2)
7. Lawrence North (15-3)
8. Northwestern (18-0)
9. Fort Wayne South (16-2)
10. Twin Lakes (16-1)

On the radar: Austin (15-3), Bloomington South (14-2), Crawfordsville (16-2), Decatur Central (15-4), Fort Wayne Elmhurst (16-2), Hamilton Southeastern (13-4), Jac-Cen-Del (16-0), Jimtown (15-1), Owen Valley (16-1), Penn (16-2), Wawasee (14-2)

This week’s big games include:

Tuesday, Jan. 22
Bedford North Lawrence @ Bloomington North: The Stars take a break from a tight conference race and head to Bloomington to face the resurgent Cougars.

Heritage Christian @ Carmel: Perhaps the last real shot anyone will have at spoiling the Eagles’ perfect season.

Wood Memorial @ Northeast Dubois: The host Jeeps sit a game back in the Blue Chip Conference. A trio of games involving these two teams and Vincennes Rivet should decide the conference crown, though North Knox could sneak into the mix.

South Bend Washington @ South Bend Clay: Champs try to get back on track at Clay after losing another double-digit game this weekend to an out-of-state team.

Thursday, Jan. 24
Jac-Cen-Del @ Southwestern (Hanover): The toughest road block in the Eagles’ schedule could end in the first loss of the season for the visitors.

Northeast Dubois @ Vincennes Rivet: Depending on outcome of Tuesday evening’s contest, this could have huge Blue Chip race implications.

Shenandoah @ Lapel: Essentially the White River Conference championship game.

Friday, Jan. 25
Fort Wayne Luers @ Fort Wayne Elmhurst: Winner still has hope in Summit Conference race. Loser is two games back with time running out.

Saturday, Jan. 26
Lawrence Central @ Southport: HoosierAuthority.com webcast!

Perry Meridian @ Bloomington South: Conference Indiana title game.

Southwestern (Hanover) @ Columbus East: Southwestern tries its luck against another Columbus team after losing earlier in the year to Columbus North.

Unbeaten Watch
We’ll call it the Jac-Den-Del Five – groovy, huh?

Northwestern (18-0)
Last week: Tigers win gigantic battle of unbeatens against Twin Lakes, then avoid a letdown game by downing Maconaquah.
Upcoming: Final Mid-Indiana Conference game against 7-9 Eastern (Greentown).

Heritage Christian (18-0)
Last week: Eagles get big road win over once-beaten Crawfordsville, then easily dispose of Indianapolis Arlington by over 40 points.
Upcoming: Huge game against Carmel Tuesday then at unknown Lexington Dunbar (KY) on Saturday.

Oregon-Davis (18-0)
Last week: The champs win three games in Bi-County Tournament, sneaking by Bremen 56-54 in the final.
Upcoming: Bobcats play in Chicagoland Classic Monday and against ambiguous Bowman Academy on Thursday.

Oak Hill (16-0)
Last week: Oak Hill proves to be one of the state’s best after dismantling Fort Wayne Elmhurst 84-61 and Alexandria 58-33.
Upcoming: Games against Eastern (Greentown) and Madison-Grant.

Jac-Cen-Del (16-0)
Last week: Eagles still rolling after 46-43 and 64-29 wins over Switzerland County and Rising Sun, respectively.
Upcoming: Games against Madison Shawe and Southwestern (Hanover), both of which will determine the Ohio River Valley Conference.

Ousted
Twin Lakes (16-1)
After catching fire in winter tournaments, one of Indiana’s surprising teams lost the last battle of unbeatens against Northwestern, 65-62. That game could ultimately be a moot point if the Indians get revenge in a probable upcoming sectional showdown.
