BB SECT. 14: 4A #12 East Central shocks 4A #3 Bloomington South, 33-30

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

COLUMBUS – Call me an outdated purist, but if they ever put a shot clock in the high school game, it will be a tragedy. There is so much more to basketball than simply the ability to jump and shoot, and Class 4A No. 12 East Central proved that Feb. 26 in a shocking 33-30 upset of 4A No. 3 Bloomington South in the Sectional 14 opener at Columbus North.

East Central coach David Disbro convinced his charges in the last week that slowing the tempo was the only way to compete with the talented Panthers. His players bought into the concept and executed it to perfection.

There is an old saying that says the secret to playing chicken is knowing when to flinch. Take my advice – don’t play chicken with East Central.

There was never any secret as to the strategy in this one. East Central (14-7) took nearly a minute of the clock on its first possession, then settled into a sticky 2-3 zone on the defensive end. It was designed to take away Bloomington South’s obvious superiority in the post.

The strategy worked in the opening period as each team registered only six possessions in the entire quarter. At the end of the stanza, Bloomington South held a 6-5 lead. The Panthers (19-2) had gotten off only one shot in the paint, however, and East Central had survived early jitters that could have been fatal if the game had been played at a quicker pace.

The Trojans’ stat line in the first quarter read six possessions, two turnovers, 2 for 4 from the field, and two shots blocked. Yet they trailed by only a single point, and the stage was set.

It appeared through most of the second quarter that Bloomington South’s wily veteran mentor, J.R. Holmes, had the proper response. The Panthers’ full-court, man-to-man pressure began to creep the tempo up to the level where South likes to play, and the number of possessions in the quarter doubled from the first with both teams controlling the ball 12 times.

That certainly is not a track meet, but it was more to Bloomington South’s liking than the opening period had been.

Twice in the quarter, the Panthers extended their lead to five points. The first time came by scoring the first four points of the stanza to take a 10-5 lead, and the second was on a 5-0 run to make it 15-10 after East Central had rallied to tie the game midway through the quarter.

At intermission, the Panthers led just 15-12. But one got the feeling that they had righted the ship, and the early part of the third period did nothing to change that notion.

After East Central hit the first bucket of the half, Bloomington South went on a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 22-14 with 5:25 remaining in the quarter. The Panthers actually had an opportunity to widen the margin to double digits, but an open 3-pointer from the wing failed to connect.

It was then that East Central displayed its character by doing the hardest thing in sports: staying the course when things are going badly. The Trojans refused to abandon their slow-down, spread-the-court tactics. If anything, they became more selective in their shot attempts.

Each squad had only five more chances to score in the quarter, and East Central cashed in on four of them. Meanwhile, Bloomington South went cold from the field and failed to score again.

Heading into the fourth, the score was suddenly tied at 22, and the legitimate thoughts of upset were dancing in the Trojans’ minds.

Three minutes later, though, nobody in the building was thinking upset. In fact, nobody was even thinking about the outcome of the game as there were far more serious considerations.

With East Central leading 25-22 with possession of the ball and five minutes to play, senior guard Kyle Pettit collapsed to the floor. It quickly became apparent that the situation was, at the least, momentarily serious. He remained on the court surrounded by medical staff for nearly 10 minutes.

Pettit was eventually helped to his feet and walked groggily to the Trojan bench, where personnel continued to attend to him. It was later learned that the episode was connected to some form of cardiac condition that had been known and monitored but simply manifested different symptoms on this occasion.

At the time of this writing, the young man is reported to be in no serious medical danger.

When play resumed, it appeared the stoppage had benefited the Panthers. Bloomington South’s defensive pressure was more intense and finally succeeded in forcing a couple of East Central miscues.

At the four-minute mark, Bloomington South finally broke what had become over a nine-minute scoreless streak. It cut the lead to 25-24 and again left people wondering if East Central could maintain its composure enough down the stretch to continue milking the clock.

Once again, East Central answered the call by stretching the lead back to three, 27-24. Then, the medical condition of Pettit again affected play. With 2:25 to play go, there was another stoppage of nearly 10 minutes while the young man was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

This time, the delay did not help Bloomington South as East Central returned to the floor with its composure fully intact. On their next possession, the Trojans worked nearly 40 seconds off the clock, then scored on a Seth Daugherty drive down the lane.

The score was 30-25, and the Panthers were in serious trouble.

As great teams do, Bloomington South did not go down without a fight. After missing on their next possession, the Panthers created a turnover and East Central fouled to prevent the open layup. Bloomington South made both free throws, cutting the margin to 30-27.

The Panthers’ pressure on the ensuing inbounds nearly caused a 10-second violation by East Central, and the Trojans called timeout after what those on press row thought was 9.9 seconds.

It would the favorite’s last gasp.

East Central was fouled and hit one of two free throws to push the lead to four with just over 30 seconds to play. Bloomington South then had two opportunities from beyond the arc but neither connected, and the second was probably an ill-advised effort.

Two more East Central charity tosses sealed the decision, and the Trojans executed their game plan to perfection.

Each team had only 39 possessions in the game. As the contest wore on, the pressure of each opportunity tightened the Bloomington South shooting strokes. (The Panthers, who were led on the evening by the nine points of Jordan Hulls, unofficially connected on only 5 of 19 second-half shots.) They also managed just 6 of 12 from the stripe.

East Central, meanwhile, got a mammoth 16-point performance from Daugherty. The Trojans will next face Columbus North (9-11) in Friday night’s semifinals, with the winner challenging either No. 19 Columbus East (15-4) or Bloomington North (11-9) for the championship Saturday night.

BB SECT. 26: 3A #11 host Beech Grove holds off Roncalli, 70-62, in OT

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

BEECH GROVE – Class 3A No. 11 host Beech Grove raced out to a 23-7 lead in the first quarter, then fended off a furious Roncalli rally Feb. 26 to advance to Friday’s Sectional 26 semifinals with a 70-62 overtime win. The Hornets will face Indianapolis Chatard, a 65-50 upset winner over 12th-ranked Indianapolis Howe Academy.

After senior guard Conner Trumble’s second 3-pointer tied the evening’s second game at 6 at 5:01 of the first quarter, Beech Grove (17-3) went on a 17-1 run to make it 23-7 with 1:12 to play in the opening stanza. Following a lackluster second quarter by both teams, the Hornets still led 32-19 at the half.

And they stretched that advantage to 17 points at 38-21 on senior guard Ben Walters’ fourth of five threes with 6:13 to play in the third period. But Walters picked up his fourth foul 73 seconds later, and Roncalli (14-6) used his absence to go on its own 22-5 run and miraculously tie the game at 43 with 5:42 to play.

That’s when things got crazy – as is almost always the case when it comes to the nuttiness known as “Hoosier Hysteria.”

Walters re-entered the game, and his final trey put Beech Grove back on top at 48-45 with 4:27 remaining. But the comeback-crazed Rebels nibbled away, finally taking their first lead since 3-2 on senior forward Tyler Thompson’s driving layup with 61 seconds left.

Beech Grove responded to its shocking 51-50 deficit by turning the ball over on its next two possessions, the second time on a mindless line infraction on an inbounds play with :30.4 to play. And the picture looked even bleaker for the Hornets when they quickly fouled Trumble, sending Roncalli to the line in the double bonus with 25.4 ticks left.

After Trumble nailed the first freebie, Beech Grove called time to regroup. The move worked as Trumble’s second free throw was long off the rim, and the Hornets had one last possession. Senior guard David Sanders (more on him later) then saved the day when he penetrated and dished off to senior forward Eric Weathers, whose layin at :12.3 tied the game at 52.

Roncalli had a chance to pull it out, but junior guard Aaron Evans’ pull-up 14-footer was well right and short of the bucket. Perhaps fittingly in this battle of Indianapolis southside rivals, we were goin’ to overtime …

BB SECT. 26: Chatard upsets 3A #12 Howe, 65-50, at Beech Grove

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

BEECH GROVE – I knew Class 3A No. 12 Indianapolis Howe Academy was in trouble Feb. 26 when I rolled in to Beech Grove for the Sectional 26 opener and the Hornets had a goose egg on the scoreboard four minutes into the high-powered Hornets’ clash with Indianapolis Chatard. And things simply never got better for the doomed Indianapolis Public School.

Chatard limited the state’s second-leading scoring team at 78.14 points a game to two field goals in the first quarter, three in the second, and just three more in the third en route to a convincing 65-50 upset victory. The Trojans (16-5) will face 11th-ranked host Beech Grove, a 70-62 overtime winner over Roncalli, in the semifinals Friday.

Howe (15-7) did not get on the scoreboard until 3:05 of the opening period on a layin by senior guard Greg Foster (more on him later), and the Hornets – who dug themselves a 9-2 hole they never got out of – trailed 11-5 after the first eight minutes. Their deficit fluctuated between five and 11 points the rest of the half, and the closest they ever got in the second was seven points on two occasions.

Standout senior guard Larry Stone, the state’s 12th-leading scorer at 22.8 points per game, scored just one point in the first and third quarters. While he finished with 22 points, 13 of those came in the fourth quarter – too little, too late.

Chatard tried to let Howe back in the game by missing 13 of 24 free throw attempts at one point, but the Trojans got hot from the line when it mattered most, nailing 11 in a row in the game’s final two minutes and 14 of their last 16 to seal the outcome.

BB SECTIONALS: The staff makes its picks

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

For better or worse, we at HoosierAuthority.com once again are subjecting ourselves to ridicule by guessing the outcomes of the sectional round of the 98th Annual IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament.

The panel of fools:

•    Bret Shambaugh, general manager/knower of many things
•    Brandon Jones, track & field/cross country guru, Eminence assistant boys basketball coach
•    Alex Kirby, basketball webcaster/contributing writer
•    Eric Eaton, video coordinator/Hoosier Crossroads Conference manager
•    E. Shawn Aylsworth, managing editor/owner of poor hoops pedigree (I got cut from the Lawrence Central basketball team, twice, and the Bears were awful then, too)

To the picks!

CLASS 4A
1. East Chicago Central
Bret: East Chicago Central
Jonesie: East Chicago Central
Young Alex: East Chicago Central. The champs begin another run at the title.
Eric: East Chicago Central
E. Soothsayer: ECC. It’s anonymous!

2. Michigan City
Bret: Merrillville
Jonesie: Chesterton
Young Alex: Chesterton
Eric: Chesterton
E. Soothsayer: Chesterton. Chesterton has only two losses, but both came recently at sectional foes Merrillville and LaPorte (we call that the “Carmel Red Flag Alert”). The Trojans get a shot Wednesday at Merrillville, while LaPorte got the best draw in the other bracket. My grandfather’s name was Chester, so I’ll go that route.

3. South Bend Clay
Bret: South Bend Washington
Jonesie: Penn
Young Alex: South Bend Riley
Eric: South Bend Riley
E. Soothsayer: Riley. Here’s a ridiculously balanced sectional with four teams (Clay, Washington, Penn, and Riley) within 2.5 points of each other power numbers-wise. Penn lost to Muncie Central in perhaps the ugliest postseason game I have ever seen two years ago in the 4A semistate at Kokomo, so the Kingsmen will never be an option (the clangfest from that 49-37 still haunts my retinas). Riley has the favorable draw, so I’ll take the Wildcats

4. Elkhart Central
Bret: Elkhart Central
Jonesie: Warsaw
Young Alex: Elkhart Memorial
Eric: Elkhart Memorial
E. Soothsayer: Elkhart Memorial. The Chargers own a win over every sectional opponent and will ride the wave of momentum established by the school’s wrestling team.

5. DeKalb
Bret: DeKalb
Jonesie: Fort Wayne Snider
Young Alex: Fort Wayne Snider. This one’s for Colin!
Eric: Fort Wayne Snider
E. Soothsayer: Snider. There were nine games played among Sectional 5 opponents this year, and only the Panthers scored over 60 points in any of the games, having done so twice. Having watched way too many games in the 30s some 15 years ago in a previous life as a sportswriter on Indy’s southside, I have grown to **** low-scoring games.

6. Marion
Bret: Marion
Jonesie: Marion
Young Alex: Marion
Eric: Marion
E. Soothsayer: Marion. Not much love for Fort Wayne South, which only lost by four at Marion around Christmastime, eh mates? Yeah, me neither.

7. Lafayette Jefferson
Bret: Lafayette Jeff
Jonesie: Lafayette Jeff
Young Alex: Lafayette Jeff. I still can’t figure out how “BronCHos” is the same as “BronCos.”
Eric (Lafayette Jeff alumnus): Lafayette Jeff
E. Soothsayer: Jeff. The Bronchos will be favored by between 18 and 36 points over any of these overmatched schools, according to the power digits. Sweet Lou and Easy E rejoice.

8. New Castle
Bret: Pendleton Heights
Jonesie: Anderson
Young Alex: Muncie Central. The Bearcats’ defense must have stayed on the bus in their season finale against Ben Davis, but I’ll still take them in this sectional.
Eric: Anderson
E. Soothsayer: The Wigwam guys. In a down year for some of the vaunted programs in this realigned sectional, I will go with coach Heck to get his 240th win at Anderson in the championship.

9. Carmel
Bret: Carmel
Jonesie: Carmel
Young Alex: Carmel. Only because this is a weak sectional. I don’t expect them to go much farther. The Greyhounds look like they are in free fall right now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an upset.
Eric: Carmel
E. Soothsayer: Carmel. With the Greyhounds having dropped two of their last four after opening the season with 16 straight wins, look for some major blowoutage in their three victories.

10. Warren Central
Bret: Indianapolis Cathedral
Jonesie: Lawrence North
Young Alex: Lawrence North. The Marion County champs advance through a tough sectional.
Eric: Lawrence North
E. Soothsayer: North Central. In one of the state’s three sectionals with three ranked teams, North Central got the best draw. Plus, my former high school weightlifting coach/current Panther mentor Doug Mitchell has the defending state runner-up’s ship righted just in time.

11. Perry Meridian
Bret: Franklin Central
Jonesie: Southport
Young Alex: Southport. I’ve been watching this team all season and, even though they have their shortcomings, I still say coach Delaney and the Cards take home their first sectional crown since 2000.
Eric: Franklin Central
E. Soothsayer: Franklin Central. Another one of those Indy-area sectionals loaded with good teams that will cannibalize each other. The Flashes got the best draw, and I am a big believer in thoroughly meaningless stuff like that.

12. Brownsburg
Bret: Brownsburg
Jonesie: Pike
Young Alex (Ben Davis Class of 2007): Ben Davis. Yeah, that’s right. I said it.
Eric: Brownsburg
E. Soothsayer: Brownsburg. Why are the Bulldogs not ranked? Their five losses are to Carmel, Terre Haute South, Batesville, Lafayette Jeff, and North Central. On their home floor, they will remember that slight.

13. Martinsville
Bret: Plainfield
Jonesie: Plainfield
Young Alex: Terre Haute South. I would have taken Plainfield but, after coach Green suspended a couple key players indefinitely, I don’t think the Quakers have the firepower.
Eric: Terre Haute South
E. Soothsayer: Nobody. As I pointed out when we did our girls predictions, this sectional NEVER goes the way it’s supposed to in any of the class sports. So, I am going to save myself a miniature heartache by just bailing right off the bat.

14. Columbus North
Bret: Bloomington South
Jonesie: Bloomington South
Young Alex: Bloomington South. No brainer.
Eric: Bloomington South
E. Soothsayer: Bloomington South. The second of the state’s sites with a trio of ranked teams. Obviously all my boys above are drinking the B-South Kool-Aid, but this is another sectional where some kooky things oftentimes occur. Then again, the Panthers did just beat Lawrence North by double figures. Get me a cup, please.

15. Seymour
Bret: New Albany
Jonesie: New Albany
Young Alex: New Albany
Eric: New Albany
E. Soothsayer: New Albany. The Bulldogs own wins over sectional opponents by 29, 36, 22, 35, and 25 points. Spankity, spank.

16. Castle
Bret: Evansville Reitz
Jonesie: Evansville Reitz
Young Alex: Evansville Harrison. This one is tough. I was torn between Harrison and Reitz. I’ll take Harrison, just because I met coach Speer earlier this year and he was a class act.
Eric: Evansville Reitz
E. Soothsayer: Castle. Four solid teams and Evansville North, whose only win against sectional foes came against Castle, the only ranked team here after winnings its last 10. Let’s see that draw … OK, let’s see that coin … Knights it is!

CLASS 3A
17. Gary Roosevelt
Bret: Gary Roosevelt
Jonesie: Gary Wallace
Young Alex: Hammond
Eric: Gary Wirt
E. Soothsayer: Gary Wirt. The Troopers have the most difficult route, but they also have the most impressive track record.

18. Kankakee Valley
Bret: Rensselaer
Jonesie: Kankakee Valley
Young Alex: Calumet
Eric: Calumet
E. Soothsayer: Calumet. The Warriors and Knox are virtually equal according to yonder power numbers, so of course they meet in the opener.

19. Plymouth
Bret: Plymouth
Jonesie: Plymouth
Young Alex: South Bend St. Joseph’s
Eric: South Bend St. Joseph’s
E. Soothsayer: Plymouth. ninth-ranked defending state champs open at home against No. 8 St. Joe’s in Wednesday’s sexiest game in the state, with the latter holding the slightest of power-number edges. I’ll go with Randy Davis & Co.

20. Frankfort
Bret: Northwestern
Jonesie: Northwestern
Young Alex: Northwestern
Eric: Northwestern
E. Soothsayer: It’s a clean sweep. A Friday semifinal between Northwestern and the host Hot Dogs figures to be the big game here, and the defending 2A state champion Tigers own a 17-point win in December.

21. Wawasee
Bret: Tippecanoe Valley
Jonesie: NorthWood
Young Alex: Tippecanoe Valley
Eric: NorthWood
E. Soothsayer: NorthWood. The Panthers play a quality schedule and oftentimes seem to sneak through to the regional round. Here’s predicting that occurs once again.

22. Peru
Bret: Peru
Jonesie: Fort Wayne Wayne
Young Alex: Fort Wayne Wayne. Just because of the name.
Eric: Fort Wayne Wayne
E. Soothsayer: Fort Wayne Wayne. Wayne has the only winning record of these six teams and plays by far the toughest schedule, so I’m going with the Generals.

23. Harding
Bret: Fort Wayne Dwenger
Jonesie: Harding
Young Alex: Fort Wayne Dwenger
Eric: Harding
E. Soothsayer: Dwenger. This one is all about Harding, which just got throttled 93-69 in its season finale at 4A North Central (Indianapolis), and Dwenger, whose only four losses are all to ranked teams. The two should meet in a Friday semifinal rematch of Dwenger’s 60-56 home win Feb. 2, and I’m going with the Saints again.

24. Muncie South
Bret: Muncie South
Jonesie: Muncie South
Young Alex: Yorktown
Eric: Yorktown
E. Soothsayer: Delta. The Eagles benefit from the bye game against a weak Mississinewa team, while Muncie South and Yorktown figger to duke it out in the semis. I say Delta takes advantage of a letdown.

25. North Montgomery
Bret: Western Boone
Jonesie: North Montgomery
Young Alex: North Montgomery
Eric: North Montgomery
E. Soothsayer: Danville. Once again going the lone wolf route, I foresee Danville again outlasting the host Chargin’ Chargers in a Friday semifinal (the Warriors were 53-48 winners here Jan. 11) before disposing of Western Boone in the finals.

26. Beech Grove
Bret: Indianapolis Howe Academy
Jonesie: Indianapolis Northwest
Young Alex: Indianapolis Howe Academy. This is my favorite to win the 3A title. These guys can shoot the ball very well and play tough defense.
Eric: Indianapolis Northwest
E. Soothsayer: Indianapolis Howe Academy. Holy loaded sectional, Batman! Five of these six teams have been bouncing in and out of the 3A Top 15 poll all season, and now they get to beat up on each other one last time. I will go with Howe because the Hornets provided me with the most entertaining game I’ve seen this season Dec. 8 in their 69-53 manhandling of Fort Wayne Luers at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

27. Shelbyville
Bret: Shelbyville
Jonesie: Rushville
Young Alex: Shelbyville
Eric: New Palestine
E. Soothsayer: Rival of Springfield. All five teams are within 5.5 points of each other, according to Senor Sagarin. With that kind of closeness, I’ll go with the home team in their home dome.

28. Greensburg
Bret: Batesville
Jonesie: Batesville
Young Alex: Batesville
Eric: Batesville
E. Soothsayer: Yes. Bulldogs bust out the broom.

29. Edgewood
Bret: Edgewood
Jonesie: Edgewood
Young Alex: Edgewood
Eric: Edgewood
E. Soothsayer: Yes. Mustangs mow down this overmatched mix.

30. North Harrison
Bret: Corydon
Jonesie: Salem
Young Alex: Salem
Eric: Salem
E. Soothsayer: Charlestown. Glistening with 17-3 records each, Charlestown and Salem gets things started right off the bat Tuesday in Game 1. Yipes! The former owns a 61-50 win at Salem just two weeks ago, and that kind of late-season swelling up is good enough for me.

31. Washington
Bret: Washington
Jonesie: Washington
Young Alex: Washington
Eric: Washington
E. Soothsayer: Pleasepleaseplease. Next weekend’s Washington Regional could feature a field of Nos. 1 (Evansville Memorial), 2 (Edgewood), 4 (Washington) and 10 (Charlestown).

32. Boonville
Bret: Evansville Memorial
Jonesie: Evansville Memorial
Young Alex: Evansville Memorial
Eric: Evansville Memorial
E. Soothsayer: Evansville Memorial. Clearly the class of this six-team field.

CLASS 2A
33. Hanover Central
Bret: Hammond Noll
Jonesie: Wheeler
Young Alex: Hammond Noll
Eric: Wheeler
E. Soothsayer: Hammond Noll. Noll and Wheeler have the best power numbers here, with the former taking their first bout by 22 at home in December and the latter returning the favor in 14-point fashion in a January tournament. The draw probably pits them against each other in the semis, and I’ll take the high-powered team that recently hung with defending 4A state champ East Chicago Central to the tune of 99-86.

34. Culver Community
Bret: North Judson
Jonesie: Boone Grove
Young Alex: Boone Grove
Eric: Boone Grove
E. Soothsayer: Boone Grove. With a handful of exceptions, the power numbers begin to drop off right here for the remaining 30-plus sites. Boone Grove has the only winning record in this field of six, and the Wolves definitely got the best draw. (Plus, Boone is a character in the best movie ever, “Animal House,” which was on last week. So the rest of the field is through! Finished at Faber!)

35. Westview
Bret: Westview
Jonesie: Westview
Young Alex: Westview
Eric: Westview
E. Soothsayer: Westview. Tough to argue with 20-1 and a semistate berth two years ago (opposite the aforementioned horrifying-to-watch Penn vs. Muncie Central game). I am still shuddering at its recollection …

36. Garrett
Bret: Garrett
Jonesie: Garrett
Young Alex: Eastside
Eric: Fremont
E. Soothsayer: Garrett. Fremont has the only winning record amongst this six-pack, and the Eagles get a shot at revenge in the Tuesday opener against host Garrett (the Railroaders won a 70-65 overtime clash at Fremont back in early December). I’ll go with the home team here throughout.

37. Fountain Central
Bret: Seeger
Jonesie: Seeger
Young Alex: Seeger. In honor of Bob.
Eric: Seeger
E. Soothsayer: Seeger. Bob spells his S-E-G-E-R, young’un. That’s OK, though – your picks will end up running against the wind, anyhoo!

38. Woodlan
Bret: Fort Wayne Luers
Jonesie: Fort Wayne Luers
Young Alex: Bluffton
Eric: Fort Wayne Luers
E. Soothsayer: Bluffton. The two juggernauts figure to meet in the finals, and the numbers say Luers has a 10-point advantage as well as a much stringer schedule. But I’d like to see some public schools actually have some success this year and, as such, will be pulling for the big town in Wells County over the big city in Allen County.

39. Cass
Bret: Cass
Jonesie: North Miami
Young Alex: North Miami
Eric: North Miami
E. Soothsayer: North Miami. One of my friends is going to South Miami Beach soon, so this seems like a nice way to wish her a great time.

40. Tipton
Bret: Tipton
Jonesie: Tipton
Young Alex: Tipton
Eric: Tipton
E. Soothsayer: Oak Hill. Knock-down, drag-out, rip-roarin’ fun in the final? It should be between Oak Hill and the host Blue Devils, and I will play contrarian just because Oak Hill beat Northwestern last week in a three-overtime thriller whereas Tipton lost to the Tigers in only one OT at home. The more overtimes the merrier!

41. Alexandria
Bret: Winchester
Jonesie: Lapel
Young Alex: Winchester
Eric: Winchester
E. Soothsayer: Winchester. I’ll go with the defending 2A runner-up over the 1A Cinderella state champ from three years ago. (And if you don’t know who that is, shame on you.)

42. Hagerstown
Bret: Hagerstown
Jonesie: Eastern Hancock
Young Alex: Centerville
Eric: Eastern Hancock
E. Soothsayer: Charlottesville rules! Kinda fitting that Eastern Hancock and Centerville open with each other, seeing as how they opened with each other Nov. 21 in a fantastic affair that went three OTs before the former won, 67-61. The Bulldogs have lost six of their last 11, however, and that’s no kind of momentum for revenge.

43. Triton Central
Bret: Triton Central
Jonesie: Indianapolis Ritter
Young Alex: Indianapolis Ritter
Eric: Indianapolis Ritter
E. Soothsayer: Indianapolis Washington. Another equally matched field where four teams are within four power points of each other. The Continentals used to rule the postseason (remember names like McGinnis, Downing, and Keller?), and their strength of schedule will have them prepared for this week.

44. Southwestern (Hanover)
Bret: Hauser
Jonesie: Hauser
Young Alex: Hauser
Eric: Hauser
E. Soothsayer: Yes. I live in Lawrence, and there’s no way in good conscience I could pick a team that has “Lawrence” in it. Call me jaded …

45. North Knox
Bret: North Knox
Jonesie: Bloomfield
Young Alex: South Knox
Eric: Bloomfield
E. Soothsayer: South Knox. Again, I will go with the team that plays offense – if I want to watch paint dry, I will take in a Wisconsin game.

46. South Putnam
Bret: Monrovia
Jonesie: Covenant Christian (Indianapolis)
Young Alex: Monrovia
Eric: Covenant Christian (Indianapolis)
E. Soothsayer: Covenant Christian. This does indeed appear to be a tossup between the two teams my cohorts have selected, meaning I get to break the tie. Executive Director Mike McGraw, who evidently is either too cool and or too priority-challenged to have made picks for either the girls or the boys hoops tournaments, used to coach at Monrovia. His decided lack of input here will cost his former school dearly – can YOU say karma?

47. Brownstown
Bret: Paoli
Jonesie: Paoli
Young Alex: Eastern (Pekin)
Eric: Eastern (Pekin)
E. Soothsayer: Paoli. The draw favors the four-loss Rams, with two of those defeats coming to 1A power Orleans and another to 3A ranked Salem.

48. Forest Park
Bret: Tell City
Jonesie: Evansville Mater Dei
Young Alex: Tell City
Eric: Tell City
E. Soothsayer: Mater Dei, Tell City, and Forest Park seem to be extremely equally matched with each team winning at home and losing on the road in their round-robin. The draw favors Tell City, and here’s guessing the Marksmen match the sectional crown of their female counterparts.

CLASS A
49. Kouts
Bret: Morgan Township
Jonesie: Kouts
Young Alex: Morgan Township
Eric: Kouts
E. Soothsayer: Kouts. Again with the tiebreaker! The two above are indeed the cream of this crop, and they open the five-team sectional Tuesday. Kouts owns a one-point win at Morgan Township three weeks ago, so I’ll go with the Mustangs at home here.

50. Triton
Bret: Triton
Jonesie: Triton
Young Alex: Triton
Eric: Triton
E. Soothsayer: Triton

51. Hamilton
Bret: Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian
Jonesie: Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian
Young Alex: Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian
Eric: Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian
E. Soothsayer: Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian

52. Tri-County
Bret: South Newton
Jonesie: Tri-County
Young Alex: South Newton
Eric: South Newton
E. Soothsayer: What is up with this blind draw? Once again, the top two teams face off early as South Newton and Tri-County open up sectional play Tuesday. The Rebels won at home, 45-39, two weeks ago, and I’ll take ‘em again here.

53. Tri-Central
Bret: Lafayette Central Catholic
Jonesie: Lafayette Central Catholic
Young Alex: Rossville
Eric: Lafayette Central Catholic
E. Soothsayer: Lafayette Central Catholic. Alex, Central Catholic beat Rossville by 28 two weeks ago – how’s that gonna turn itself around?

54. Southern Wells
Bret: Southern Wells
Jonesie: Wes-Del
Young Alex: Daleville
Eric: Daleville
E. Soothsayer: Wes-Del. The numbers say Wes-Del and Daleville are the class here. The former owns a 77-76 OT win at Daleville in early January, plus the Warriors play a much tougher schedule. ’nuff said.

55. Blue River Valley
Bret: Seton Catholic
Jonesie: Blue River Valley
Young Alex: Monroe Central
Eric: Monroe Central
E. Soothsayer: Monroe Central. The Golden Bears are thisclose to the Delaware County line, and Muncie is a hoops town. Mmmm, proximity …

56. North Vermillion
Bret: Rockville
Jonesie: Rockville
Young Alex: Rockville
Eric: Rockville
E. Soothsayer: Yes. The Rox will be favored by anywhere from 28 to 35 points over any sectional foe, according to the power numbers. Eesh.

57. White River Valley
Bret: Shakamak
Jonesie: Shakamak
Young Alex: Shakamak
Eric: Shakamak
E. Soothsayer: White River Valley. The Lakers have won seven in a row and have beaten the host Wolverines – Shakamak and White River Valley have the two best power numbers – twice. Can they do it a third time in a potential semifinal? Contrarian sez no.

58. Edinburgh
Bret: Waldron
Jonesie: Waldron
Young Alex: Waldron
Eric: Waldron
E. Soothsayer: Waldron. The Mohawks have a superior power rating and the only winning record at this six-team site, requiring minimal brain activity from me.

59. Indianapolis Lutheran
Bret: Indianapolis Lutheran
Jonesie: Indianapolis Lutheran
Young Alex: Indianapolis Lutheran
Eric: Indianapolis Lutheran
E. Soothsayer: Lutheran. I would LOVE to see the Deaf Hoosiers win this, but they lost by 25 at home to Lutheran about a month ago.

60. South Decatur
Bret: Jac-Cen-Del
Jonesie: Jac-Cen-Del
Young Alex: Jac-Cen-Del
Eric: Jac-Cen-Del
E. Soothsayer: Jac-Cen-Del. The numbers give J-C-D a double-digit advantage over the other four schools.

61. Springs Valley
Bret: Orleans
Jonesie: Orleans
Young Alex: Orleans
Eric: Orleans
E. Soothsayer: Orleans. Quick, name their other hit beside “Still the One”! That’s right … “Dance with Me” – something the Bulldogs may just well do all the way to Conseco.

62. Borden
Bret: Borden
Jonesie: Lanesville
Young Alex: Borden
Eric: Christian Academy of Indiana
E. Soothsayer: Borden. Those three listed above have a clear-cut numbers advantage, and Borden has a six-point win at Lanesville to go with a three-point victory at home against Christian Academy. The trio figure to have faced each other by the time the semifinals arrive, and I’ll go with the home-floor advantage.

63. Loogootee
Bret: North Daviess
Jonesie: North Daviess
Young Alex: North Daviess
Eric: North Daviess
E. Soothsayer: North Daviess – with a caveat. Hold on a sec, kiddies. Yes, Barr-Reeve’s lone loss to sectional foes came at home to top-ranked North Daviess. But it was by the Van Halen-esque score of 51-50, and it took the Cougars two overtimes to get the job done. That twosome figures to face off again in the semifinals, and I’ll predict another squeaker extraction by the troops from Elnora.

64. Wood Memorial
Bret: Tecumseh
Jonesie: Tecumseh
Young Alex: Tecumseh
Eric: Tecumseh
E. Soothsayer: Tecumseh. The host Trojans’ 56-29 home-court shellacking at the hands of Tecumseh back on the first day of December precludes any sort of upset call at Oakland City
