BB 2A STATE FINAL: #3 FW Luers outlasts #4 Winchester, 69-67

By Craig Adkins
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – You would think that it would be pretty hard to match or even come close to outdoing last year’s double-overtime 78-74 thriller in the Class 2A final between Northwestern and runner-up Winchester. But that wasn’t the case March 22 with third-ranked Fort Wayne Luers and those same Golden Falcons of No. 4 Winchester.

This year’s 2A title tilt at Conseco Fieldhouse had no trouble living up to that playbill from a year ago. Luers somehow found a way through some back-and-forth officiating, however, to slip away with a 69-67 victory, the school’s first boys crown to go with a record five on the girls side. (Click here to see the game’s final shot from our Drew Davis!)

“I think both teams poured their hearts out there on the floor,” said Luers coach James Blackmon. “I tip my hat to our guys – we kept our composure when we got down. It was a hard-fought game, and we made plays when we needed to.

“Winchester had a great game plan.”

These two teams left everything on the floor, and you couldn’t have asked for more on the big stage that they played on Saturday in downtown Indy.

“I’m really proud of our kids,” said Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey. “They played great and gave it everything they had. The seniors are a great group. They have been a lot of fun to coach over the years.”

Tyler Koch must really thrive on playing in high-pressured environments. After scoring 24 points a year ago at Conseco against Northwestern, the 6’5” junior poured in a game-high 37 today versus Luers (24-3).

“Tyler Koch’s role is to score – he is the quintessential basketball player,” Mehaffey said. “He’s not had a bad practice or game all year. As you got to see today, he is an amazing player.

“He’s just not an Indiana All-Star – he’s a Mr. Basketball candidate for next year.”

With this game being a story of two of the state’s top underclassmen in Koch and Luers sophomore Deshaun Thomas, some would think that the flashy Golden Falcons would be intimidated by the size and muscle of the Knights. Not so the case.

Winchester (23-4) came out unafraid to shoot, knocking down three treys in the first quarter and spreading out the scoring with a 20-12 advantage after eight minutes. Koch led the way with nine.

The second quarter’s scoring belonged to Koch (11 more for a first-half total of 20) and 6’3” senior sixth man Brock Morrison, who added six. Luers took the second quarter 20-17, but Winchester still clung to a 37-32 halftime lead.

“At half, we talked about keeping our composure,” Blackmon said. “There are a lot of gimmick defenses thrown at Deshaun, sometimes two or three guys on him. In sectionals we saw a box-and-one.”

There were indeed many defensive schemes thrown at Thomas because, at an agile 6’7, he’s one of the best sophomores in the United States at 29.5 points and 12.5 rebounds a contest. He’s also a little tougher to guard for another reason – he’s left-handed.

But Winchester held a 21-18 rebounding advantage and also shot well from the field in the first half, making 13 of 26 overall and 5 of 10 from outside the 3-point arc. With Luers only hitting 13 of 35 shots in the first 16 minutes, it seemed that Winchester had control of the tempo for the most part.

“It was a supreme effort by our players,” Mehaffey said. “For their size, we outrebounded them. Our team plays as hard as any team in the state.”

Nip-and-tuck was the name of the game in the third period. The Knights had a 22-20 edge in points and also shot considerably better, making good on eight of their 12 shots, including 4 of 7 from trey land. Near the end of the third, 6’1” freshman guard Evan Blackmon canned a three from the right wing off a pass from Thomas, tying the score at 53.

Winchester countered, however, by going 9 of 14 in the period and still led, 57-54, heading to the fourth, when the two high-energy squads traded baskets for the rest of the game.

Tying four more times (at 57, 60, 62, 64), Luers took the lead for good with 1:31 to play on a putback off a Thomas missed three by 6’4” junior Jake Kuhn. Winchester appeared to tie it 25 seconds later when an off-balance, double-pump shot over Thomas by Morrison somehow fell from the sky, off the glass, and through the net.

But in one of the worst late-game calls in the history of the state finals, a referee ruled that Morrison had traveled – presumably by hitting the floor before he released the shot. Replays clearly showed no travel, and it really wasn’t that close, either.

“The travel at the end wasn’t a travel,” Mehaffey said. “But I might not have done a good job on a couple of situations as a coach. We missed on some blockouts, and we missed a couple of rotations.

“It’s all part of it.”

Two free throws by 5’11” junior guard Lawrence Barnett with 44.7 seconds to go put Luers up four at 68-64, but Koch countered with two of his own to make it 68-66 at :31. Barnett turned the ball over in the backcourt seven seconds later attempting to dribble through a double-team, but Morrison missed the front end of a one-and-bonus.

Morrison grabbed his own rebound, however, and was immediately fouled, sending him back to the line … from where he missed again. He made the second attempt, however, cutting the lead to one at 68-67.

Then it was Barnett’s turn to head to the stripe, and he made the first one with 15 seconds to play. But he missed the second, and Winchester had one last chance. But Morrison’s drive to the right side of the basket with two seconds to play was altered by Thomas, who grabbed the rebound before throwing the ball high into the air in celebration.

In retrospect, would Mehaffey have chosen instead to have Koch take the final shot?

“We practice that situation all year,” Mehaffey said. “We executed it perfectly, and we got the shot we wanted. It just didn’t go in.

“If I had a second thought, we might have gone for the three for the win. That’s the only second guess I’d have.”

Coach Blackmon, on the other hand, finally gets to enjoy the sweet taste of a championship after it eluded him 25 years ago. He still holds the IHSAA state finals record for points scored in a game with 52 against Anderson in Marion’s 89-87 double-overtime loss in the 1983 state semifinals.

“I try to preach to my guys all year long that we have to play 32 minutes, and tonight we really needed it,” said Blackmon, who also played in an NCAA Final Four at Kentucky.

Koch scored 17 of Winchester’s 30 second-half points, while Barnett knocked down six of Luers’ final 15 points, all at the charity stripe. The latter helped offset the pressure that was put on Thomas by a swarming Winchester defense – on one play, Thomas received a lob in the paint while surrounded by four Golden Falcons – down the stretch in the fourth.

“Every time he touched the ball, he had two or three guys around him and had to work for every shot tonight,” Blackmon said. “He made some good passes when the double- and triple-teams came.”

Both teams finished with 25 field goals made, with Winchester going 25 for 49 (51 percent) and Luers hitting 25 of 56 (45 percent). Both teams’ efforts at the free throw line were less successful, however, and a team should be able to capitalize with the clock stopped.

Aside from the crazed traveling call on Morrison, Winchester may look back upon its efforts at the free throw line in remiss. A 71-percent shooting team, the Golden Falcons hit only 12 out of 20 for 60 percent in the championship.

Winchester’s second straight 2A state runner-up finish (and third overall – the Golden Falcons fell to Westview, 59-53, in the 2000 2A title game) was highlighted in scoring by Koch’s 2A state championship game-record 37 points in 31 minutes played. Morrison joined him in double digits with 15 points and added a game-high eight rebounds.

Luers placed four scorers in double figures, led by Thomas with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Barnett had 18 points and eight assists, while Evan Blackmon scored 15 and Troy Amos added 13 off the bench.

Winchester’s Wickersham named Trester Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Winchester’s Lucas Wickersham the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award, named in honor of Arthur L. Trester, the IHSAA’s first commissioner who served the Association from 1929-44.

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by his principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Winchester Community High School in the 6-foot senior’s name.

Wickersham is ranked 16th in his senior class of 113 with a 3.61 GPA. He plans to attend Butler University, where he will double major in business and biology.

Lucas is part of the IHSAA Student Ambassadors Mentor and Role Model programs as well as the NCAA Stay-in-Bounds program. The son of Michael and Julie Wickersham of Winchester is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as Student Council vice-president.

Along with basketball, Wickersham has participated in football, track, and cross country for the Golden Falcons. He is a nominee for the 2007-2008 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

“After coaching basketball for 20 years, I can honestly say that I have never coached an athlete who works harder than Lucas,” Mehaffey said. “His work ethic has been an example for the players in our program and helped lead us to a state runner-up finish last year, and a return to the state finals this season.”

BB 3A STATE FINAL: #4 Washington rolls past #6 Harding, 84-60

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – Likely Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller closed out his career with a bang March 22, scoring a state finals-record 43 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in leading fourth-ranked Washington to an 84-60 victory over No. 6 Harding in the Class 3A championship at Conseco Fieldhouse.

The 7-foot Zeller – brother of 2005 Mr. Basketball Luke Zeller – was joined in the domination department by 6’11” classmate Seth Coy, who finished with 20 points and 16 boards. The unusually tall trio and its many high-percentage shots trumped smaller Harding and its arsenal of long-range bombers. (Click here for video highlights from Eric Eaton!)

“There is not a better player in the state of Indiana and very few in the country better than he is,” Washington coach Gene Miiler said of Zeller. “It has been my pleasure to coach him. His inside presence makes the difference. Words cannot describe how good a player and person he is.”

Zeller and Coy combined for 23-of-36 shooting for the Hatchets, who shot 57 percent for the game (59 percent in the first half, 56 in the second) and a lights-out 19 of 22 from the free throw line. Harding, on the other hand, finished at 37 percent for the game after going just 12 of 30 in the opening half and 34 percent in the second.

Washington was in control right from the very tip, when Zeller swatted the ball downcourt for an instant layup by 6’4” senior forward Kyle Price. The Hatchets hit five of their first six shots in jumping out to an 11-5 lead just 2:26 into the game, and they had no trouble keeping up with Harding’s tempo.

In fact, Washington thrived at the faster pace (the first quarter had a head-spinning total of 37 possessions), hitting 10 of 17 shots and leading 25-18 after the first eight minutes. Zeller had 12 points in the opening period on a short bank shot, a left-handed layin, another left-landed layin, an athletic twisting layup off a fast break, and four free throws.

The Hatchet’s attack would not let up, either, as Zeller tallied six, 11, and 14 points over the final three quarters. Meanwhile, Coy was coyly playing the North Carolina recruit’s sizable understudy, deftly dishing out a half-dozen assists while helping Zeller control the boards and the paint.

Harding, on the other hand, attempted to keep pace with Washington by shooting a multitude of 3-pointers – 29 in all. The Hawks hit 10 of them, good for a decent percentage of .345.

“I don’t think there was any other strategy we could have used – just keep them off the boards and out of the lane,” said Harding coach All Gooden. “I think our kids got a little wore down late.”

After Harding had cut its deficit from 19 midway through the third quarter to 11 at the start of the fourth on the strength of four threes, however, the Hatchets went on a 12-0 run to go up 73-50. The Washington faithful knew the game was theirs, and with it the school’s fifth state championship and second 3A title in four years.

“I thought our perimeter defense was the difference – it was outstanding,” Miiler said. “Right from the beginning, we got out on them defensively. They hit some tough shots, but we kept up our defensive intensity.

“Two championships in four years means everything for the community and the school. It was a great accomplishment for our players when you consider on the way (to the title), they beat the number one, two, three teams in the state and tonight we beat the number six team in the state.

“No one can deny that we are the best in 3A.”

Harding was led by the 20 points of 6’3” senior guard Pryce Underwood, who finished 6 of 12 from behind the 3-point stripe. He was joined in double figures by 6-foot senior guard Evan White, who had 16 points.

“I was in a rhythm early, but it just wasn’t enough tonight,” said Underwood, who was 4 of 7 from long range in an opening half that ended with Washington ahead, 39-28.

Harding’s Underwood named Trester Award winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Pryce Underwood of Harding High School as the winner of the Arthur L.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Harding in Underwood’s name.

Underwood is ranked second in his senior class of 107, carrying an 11.25 GPA on a 12.0 scale. Underwood is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars and was chosen to be part of the 2007-2008 IHSAA Role Model program. The son of Fred and Cheryl Underwood of Fort Wayne is also part of the Senior Committee and Renaissance Club at Harding.

“Pryce Underwood is arguably the best student-athlete in the history of Harding High School,” said Dr. Neal Brown, Harding’s principal. “As salutatorian of his graduating class, Pryce has demonstrated that he is a student-athlete of high character, good sportsmanship, and he fully understands his responsibility to the community.”

BB 1A STATE FINAL: #3 Triton stifles #10 Lutheran, 50-42

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – The saying is “defense wins championships.” In the Class A boys basketball state championship game March 22 at Conseco Fieldhouse, one would have a hard time arguing with that.

That’s because the third-ranked Triton Trojans, making their first appearance ever in the state finals, used a suffocating defense to hold No. 10 Indianapolis Lutheran to only 38 percent from the field, including just .227 in the first half. That sterling defensive effort set the tone in the Trojans’ 50-42 win over Lutheran, which also was making its first appearance at the state finals.

The Trojans (25-2) shot 47 percent from the floor and 76 percent from the free throw line to go with their stifling “D.” (Click here to see Triton’s game-ending celebration from our Drew Davis!)

“On defense, Triton is very big and long,” said Lutheran coach Tom Finchum. “They did a nice job defensively on the inside, but they also challenged our outside shooters.

“Every time we had a shot, they had somebody in our face.”

Lutheran (22-5) started quickly, scoring the game’s first five points. The only problem for the Saints was that after the surge, Lutheran didn’t score the rest of the quarter. Triton, meanwhile, reeled off 10 points over the final 6:19 of the first quarter and led 10-5 after one.

Five minutes into the second quarter, Lutheran cut the deficit to two, 14-12, after a 3-pointer from Eric Borst. Neither team scored a point over the next 3:20, but Triton tallied the final five points of the period to take a 19-12 lead at halftime.

Looking at the shooting percentages at halftime tells the story. Luther was 5 of 22 from the floor, while Triton was 8 of 16. Offensive inefficiency killed Lutheran as the Saints were held scoreless over the last six-plus minutes of the first quarter and the final 4:55 of the second.

In the third quarter, Lutheran kept cutting into the Triton lead only to watch the Trojans stretch it back.

With 1:24 left, for example, Lutheran got a bucket from Ryan Maddigan to cut the deficit to three, 25-22. Triton responded, though, with a three from Griffyn Carpenter and a free throw from A.J. Harrison to jump back ahead by seven, 29-22, heading to the fourth.

“He’s come a long way for us,” Triton coach Jason Groves said of Carpenter. “He played JV most of the year. He’s performed so well in practice and games, we felt we just had to get him in there.”

Triton got a bucket from Jake Everett to go up by nine to start the final stanza, but Lutheran countered with a basket from Zach Cutshaw at the 7:04 mark to make it 31-24.

This is the point that things went south for the Saints. Triton went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:20 to push the lead to 17, 41-24. Lutheran never gave up, but the Saints simply couldn’t recover.

Lutheran would get no closer than eight points over the final 3:43, and that came after James Schwartz’s layup at the buzzer finished this small-school final off at 50-42. As the final horn sounded, the Triton faithful erupted with joy.

“After getting beat last year on a last-second shot by Oregon Davis, the kids really dedicated themselves this year,” Groves said. “They deserve all the success they’re having – they work hard all year long in the off-season and they really deserve it.

“They’re the ones who put in the effort in the gym each day.”

Jake Everett led the Trojans, who won their final nine games, with 16 points. He was joined in double figures by Troy McIntyre with 14. Triton will say good-bye to seven seniors.

Lutheran, which loses 10 seniors, was led by Borst with 19 points. Cutshaw chipped in nine points, while Maddigan added seven.

“We didn’t execute the way we wanted to, but I can’t fault our effort,” Finchum said. “This is the first time we’ve ever won a sectional. Then to win a regional and semistate to get here was fantastic.”

Triton’s Everett named Trester Award Winner
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Jacob Everett of Triton High School as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award. The award, named in honor of Arthur L. Trester, the IHSAA’s first commissioner who served the Association from 1929-44, is presented annually to a senior participant in each classification who was nominated by his principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability.

Everett ranks 12th in his senior class of 71 at Triton. He carries a 10.04 GPA on a 10-point scale and plans to pursue a degree in secondary education at Bethel College. The president of the local Key Club and a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council, Everett also belongs to the Spanish, Science, and Art clubs at Triton.

Athletically, the son of Bryan and Jill Everett of Tippecanoe has been a three-sport athlete at Triton, participating in varsity football for two years, junior varsity golf for two years, and varsity basketball for four years.

“Through a strong work ethic, a never-give-up attitude, and sheer determination, Jacob has developed into a positive role model for generations to come,” said Michael Chobanov, Triton’s principal. “Regardless of the situation, Jacob has developed the life skills to meet challenges head on, the intellectual ability to develop and implement a plan of attack, and the mental toughness to see the challenge through to a successful completion.”

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to Triton High School in the name of Jacob Everett.

BB STATE FINALS: The staff makes its final picks

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Young Alex has busted out his Ben Davis math for use on the HoosierAuthority.com staff picks for the boys basketball state tournament, and his conclusions tell us that four of the five choosers still have a chance to be crowned overall champion.

That and $44.50 will get you a full tank of gas, thanks to the spectacular leadership of our somehow-twice-elected president. So what sort of “strategery” will the troops exhibit this weekend as we put a close to the 2007-08 winter sports season with the boys state finals?

It appears that all but yours truly are borrowing heavily from Tom Wolfe, he of “The Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test” (young people, do a Google search on the Internet … and do not fail to leave out “Jim Jones”), insofar as they are all drinking the unranked Kool-Aid of the Brownsburg Bulldogs in making their Class 4A selections.

Not me.

I compared the statistics between the flavor of the day (Bulldog) and the 400-pound, seven-time state champion gorilla in the room (Marion) and know how the Giants will win: They’ll use their trio of studs (Julius Mays, the sharp-shooting Scott Wood, and Jay Edwards Jr.) to outduel Brownsburg’s dynamic duo of Julian Mavunga and Gordon Hayward.

And if that doesn’t work, they’ll turn it into a foul-shooting contest. Or, at least they should as three Marion regulars connect at 80 percent or better from the stripe while four Brownsburg players shoot 63 percent or worse – in some instances, far worse.

In fact, as long as Marion keeps the 6’9” superhero Hayward (he plays tennis real good, too) and his 79-percent accuracy away from the line, I am GUARANTEEING a Giants’ victory. Why?

Because that would really cheese off all the Muncie Central fans out there who would then have to share state-record bragging rights with eight “Hoosier Hysteria” championships. (Just kidding, Bearcat fans.) I’m just sayin’ it would be cool to see the state’s preseason top-ranked team complete its dance with destiny.

But enough of my rambling.

Here are this week’s panelists:

• Bret Shambaugh, general manager/whipcracker
• Bubba Harnist, manager of Mid-State and West Central conferences/owner of Boomity Boomity Boomity
• Alex Kirby, basketball webcaster/contributing writer/Ben Davis math skills show-off
• Eric Eaton, video coordinator/Hoosier Crossroads Conference manager/Purdue fan
• E. Shawn Aylsworth, managing editor/ashamed of how alma mater IU went down the tubes late in the season following Cellphonegate

Here are your panelists’ semistate results:

1. Young Alex (7-1)
2. Eric (6-2)
3. Bubba (5-3)
4. Shawn (4-4)
5. Bret (3-5)

Here are your panelists’ standings after sectional, regional, and semistate play:

1. Shawn (48-40)
1. Eric (48-40)
3. Bret (47-41)
4. Young Alex (46-42)
5. Brandon Jones (43-37)
6. Bubba-Come-Lately (5-3)

To the picks!

CLASS 4A
Bret: Brownsburg
Bubba: Brownsburg. I can already see the smile on the face of B-burg alum Kyle Dubya after the Bulldogs cut down the nets.
Eric: Brownsburg
Young Alex: Brownsburg
E. Soothsayer: MARION. SEE ABOVE.

CLASS 3A
Bret: Harding
Bubba: Washington. Best player in the state + solid support cast = state title.
Eric: Washington
Young Alex: Harding
E. Soothsayer: Washington. Not sure about the completeness of that supporting cast, Mark, but anyone named Zeller gets my vote in a 3A final – especially if it’s one that could possibly drop 45.

CLASS 2A
Bret: Fort Wayne Luers
Bubba: Winchester. Golden Falcons are a hungry basketball team looking for revenge after their loss to Northwestern in double OT last year.
Eric: Luers
Young Alex: Winchester
E. Soothsayer: Luers. The three-headed monster of underclassmen DeShaun Thomas (sophomore), Lawrence Barnett (junior), and Evan Blackmon (freshman) is playing so much better now than when Indianapolis Howe Academy kicked their butts all over Hinkle Fieldhouse back in December that it’s not even funny. Funny is what IU’s team has been these last few weeks … if you consider “funny” to mean something that causes one to chuckle in disbelief at the Hoosiers’ penchant for allowing wide-open layups and/or putbacks in conjunction with never failing to chuck up a quick (and preferably rim-bending) three.

CLASS A
Bret: Indianapolis Lutheran
Bubba: Lutheran. I picked against the Saints last week, but not this week. They are on a roll that won’t stop.
Eric: Triton
Young Alex: Lutheran
E. Soothsayer: Triton. The Trojans play lock-down “D” (allowing just 40.3 points a game) and have endured a much-tougher road to get here. That hard-earned work will pay off handsomely around noon on Saturday. (Is that daylight savings time? Eastern time? Central time? Eastern Central time? Central Eastern time? Eesh …)

BB STATE FINALS: McLovin’s musings

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Random thoughts while waiting for the greatest day in Indiana sports …

This Saturday’s state finals are filled with intriguing matchups. There is a little bit of everything this time around. We have first-time teams, legendary programs, bally-hooed players, and consummate program teams.

The event also represents the return of Eastern Indiana to the title hardwood. Not so many years ago, we had a finals day where seven of the eight teams were from west of U.S.31. This year, six of the eight are from the eastern side of that state-splitting highway.

The Class A contest features a couple of first-timers in 10th-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran and No. 3 Triton. It is a pleasure to see Lutheran experience the first high-profile success in school history. One thing is for sure – none of the private-school bashers are going to pull out the recruiting card as a reason for the Saints’ appearance.

Meanwhile, Triton coach Jason Groves has repeatedly pointed out in media interviews that his Trojans have played the second-toughest schedule in 1A. While the accuracy of that claim can be debated, the mindset that Groves has instilled in his players cannot. These Trojans are a tough-minded bunch who aren’t afraid of anybody.

My vote goes to Triton. In the end, the Trojans’ balance should be too much for Lutheran to handle.

Class 2A is the matchup of the star-driven team versus the ultimate small-school program. Sophomore DeShaun Thomas of No. 3 Fort Wayne Luers is within one game of fulfilling a destiny that basketball hounds unfairly placed on him before he ever played a game. Thomas burst on the scene last season as the most heralded freshman since the duo of Odon & Conley, and he has handled the pressure beautifully.

Luers will meet the fourth-ranked Winchester Golden Falcons of coach Chip Mehaffey. It is time that Mehaffey started getting credit for being one of the best to ever coach the game in this state. He is 220-64 at the school, and it could be argued that over the past decade, Winchester has been the best small-school program in the state.

The Golden Falcons beefed up their schedule this year, so they should be prepared for the high-powered skills that Luers brings to the table. Nonetheless, at the end of the morning session I think Luers will cut down the nets.

Third-ranked Washington brings the biggest of the stars to the stage this weekend in the 3A tilt. That, of course, is Tyler Zeller. If there is anyone who does not believe he is the leading candidate for Mr. Basketball, I don’t know who it is. Coach Gene Miiller’s Hatchets will tangle with Al Gooden’s No. 6 Harding Hawks. Talk about great coaches and great programs!

Heck, the Hawks don’t even care what class it is. They just keep showing up like the in-law you can’t get to go home after the family reunion.

It says here that Harding will leave Conseco Fieldhouse without a title for the fourth time in eight years because there is no answer for Zeller.

That brings us to 4A. Don’t look now – they’re baaaccckk. Marion’s eight-ranked Giants, the Yankees of Indiana high school basketball, are returning to the state finals. The theme in Joe Luce’s tenure at the helm has been to return pride, passion, and discipline to Marion basketball, and he has certainly succeeded. That is a good thing for everyone. Let’s face it. Love ’em or **** ’em, Indiana high school basketball is better when Marion is on center stage.

Their opponent this time is unranked Brownsburg. (Click here for our Eric Eaton’s video interview with Julian Mavunga, and click here for a video interview with Gordon Hayward!) The Bulldogs have every right to consider themselves the Rodney Dangerfield of the tournament. Nobody thought Brownsburg would navigate the treacherous waters of the Central Indiana 4A playoffs – the Bulldogs avenged regular-season losses to defending 4A runner-up North Central (Indianapolis) and Carmel in the regional alone – to land here.

I make no prediction on this one. I think it has all the makings of one of the great finals we have seen in years.

Enjoy, everybody!
