Base RANKINGS: Chatard, Wapahani move to top of 3A, 2A polls

The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association has released its fifth set of polls for 2008, and this week we have a pair of new No. 1s. Indianapolis Chatard and Wapahani have moved to the top of the coaches’ polls in Classes 3A and 2A, respectively.

GT&F Conference Indiana: Columbus North posts shocking victory

By Colin Altevogt
Track & Field Coordinator

Unranked Columbus North shocked everybody April 25, defeating five ranked schools in taking the school’s first-ever Conference Indiana girls track & field title at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The Bull Dogs scored big points in the distance events and hurdles, including a win in the 100-meter hurdles and a runner-up finish in the 300s by freshman Courtney Larson. While victorious only in two events, Columbus North took advantage of its superior depth by placing two individuals in eight different events and finishing no worse than fourth in any of the relays.

The Bull Dogs scored 120.5 points to outdistance No. 18 Bloomington South (107.75). No. 32 Perry Meridian took third, while the conference’s top-ranked team, No. 11 Pike, managed but a sixth-place finish.

The runner-up Panthers had gotten out to an early lead in the 4×800 after freshman Brooke Bierhaus anchored home the winning relay, just outleaning Columbus North’s Georgia Tech-bound senior distance ace Betsy Kim.

Rachel Deloney, winner in the shot put and discus, and Molly Hirt, victorious in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, were the only double individual event winners. Both girls represented No. 13 Bloomington North, which finished fourth at 92.75.

Pike senior Erica Campbell won the 200 and also contributed a leg on the Red Devils’ victorious 4×100 meter relay team. Perry Meridian junior Ebony Woodard led a 1-2 Falcon finish in the 400 and ran on Perry’s winning 4×400 meter relay team that just edged out Franklin Central and Columbus North.

Other individual winners were: Perry Meridian’s Emarynne Watt (100), Franklin Central’s Christine Talhelm (800), Columbus North’s Mollie Stafford (300 hurdles), Bloomington South’s Ellie Sparks (high jump) and Rachel Robertson (long jump,) and Lawrence Central’s Margo Tucker (pole vault).

The Conference Indiana girls results …

BT&F Conference Indiana: #4 Pike wins seven events, conference crown

By Colin Altevogt
Track & Field Coordinator

Predictably enough, No. 4 Pike won seven of 16 events April 25 at Indiana University to easily defend its Conference Indiana boys track title against a field that included six teams ranked in the state’s Top 25.

The Red Devils totaled 147 points to outduel runner-up No. 10 Bloomington South (124), with No. 20 Lawrence Central third. The field, in fact, was so talented that No. 15 Bloomington North could manage only a sixth-place finish with 50 points.

Pike’s Keron Harding was one of the meet’s two individual winners, jumping 22’2.5” in the long jump and running :22.09 in the 200-meter dash to best teammate Darnel Harris in the latter. Harding was also on the winning 4×100 meter relay.

The Red Devils also won the 4×400 in 3:21.88 in the event where they hold the state’s best time, and 400 meter ace Josh Lee broke the meet record in that event as well with his :48.34 performance. (That time is also the state’s best so far.) Other Pike winners were Darnell Harris in the 100 and Larrijames Smith in the 300 meter hurdles.

Bloomington South’s Joe Holahan was the meet’s other double winner, posting times of 1:57.30 and 4:26.19 to win the 800 and 1600 runs. Bloomington North’s Michael Hoffman ran away from Ben Bizuneh of Pike to win the 3200 in 9:20.57, the fifth-best number in Indiana this season.

Lawrence Central’s Geoff Davis joined Lee as the other meet record-breaker. Davis cleared 6’8.5” in the high jump, the fourth-best effort this season.

BT&F MIC Championship: #1 Ben Davis steamrolls #2 Warren, #3 LN

By Aaron Pittman
HoosierAuthority.com

INDIANAPOLIS – Twelve years and six runner-up finishes later, Ben Davis took home its first Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference boys track & field championship April 25. In a meet bothered by high winds throughout at Ben Davis, the top-ranked Giants racked up 158.5 points by dominating the meet from the start.

Ben Davis won seven of 16 events, including a sweep of the relay events. The Giants also got wins in the 300-meter hurdles by Brandon Newburn (:38.88) and the 400-meter dash by Raphael Williams, and they captured first- and second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Ben Davis’ Lavarus Williams, who set a state-best time of 10:63 in winning the 100 and also took the 200, was thrilled with the outcome.

“We’re an elite team, and we just wanted to come out and run our race,” Williams said.

Two-time defending state champion No. 2 Warren Central finished second with 98.75 points, just ahead of third-place No. 3 Lawrence North (93.25), a four-time state champ itself. Seven of the state’s 23 top-ranked teams competed in the loaded event.

Lawrence North continued its success in the field events with a first- and second-place finish in the long jump, where Jordan Conley won with a state-best 23’08.75”. LN’s Brandon Pounds was a double winner, pushing past the competition with wins in the shot put (a state-best and meet-record 66’-04”) and discus (169’-02”).

Another meet record (:41.48) was set by the Ben Davis 4×100 meter team of Colin Hester, Matthew Terrell, Raphael Williams, and Williams.

Heading into the state meet May 31 at Indiana University, Ben Davis has made its claim as the team to beat. A boys state title would be the first for the mammoth school on Indianapolis’ far-westside.

GT&F MIC Championship: #1 North Central ekes by #2 Warren for title

By Aaron Pittman
HoosierAuthority.com

INDIANAPOLIS – The individual story of the night April 25 at the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Track & Field Championship was the speed of Warren Central junior star Candyce McGrone. But in the end, the bigger story was top-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) outlasting two-time defending state champion No. 2 Warren Central, 119.5 to 117, to claim the school’s first-ever MIC girls title.

North Central held a half-point lead heading into the final event, and the Panthers’ second-place finish in the 4×400 meter relay secured the victory over the Warriors. The Panthers’ tandem of senior Erica Blythe, senior Lateasa Cannon, junior Verena Vogel, and sophomore Jayla Lane logged a 4:01.49 in the 4×400 meter relay to finish a little more than two seconds behind winner Lawrence North.

But that effort was almost four seconds better than the fourth-place time of Warren Central, allowing the Panthers to escape with the team title.

No. 3 Lawrence North (102 points) finished third and No. 6 Carmel (87.5) fourth in the loaded event that featured six of the state’s 22 top-ranked teams.

In the sprinting events, Warren Central’s tandem of McGrone and classmate Ebony Wright took care of business by taking first and second, respectively, in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The Warriors also won the 4×100 meter relay.

In the field events, Ben Davis and Lawrence North claimed big points in setting meet records in three events.

LN senior Felisha Johnson, the defending discus throw state champion, made her claim as a multiple frontrunner by unleashing a state-best 141’-04” in the discus and winning the shot put with a 47’-07.74”. Ben Davis junior Chanel Simmons, meanwhile, won the long jump with a new MIC record of 18’02.50”.

“It’s really good, but I’d like to do it at state,” Johnson said of her impressive double win. “This is a big meet, but state is even bigger. We will continue to improve.”

As time grows closer to the May 30 state finals in Bloomington, North Central – the state champ in 1984 and 1987 – is proving that the Panthers may be the ones to hoist the state championship trophy next month in Bloomington. But the Warriors from Warren Central will be waiting in the wings …

BB: Indiana boys All-Star team announced

Of the 14 players named to The Indianapolis Star 2008 Indiana All-Star team, half will be attending college within the state’s borders. Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller of Class 3A state champion Washington, of course, will not be among them.

That’s because the standout 7-footer is bound for the University of North Carolina, one of two All-Stars who will be playing on Tobacco Road (Marion’s Julius Mays being the other).

The other All-Stars heading out of state to play college ball are New Albany’s Braydon Hobbs (Bellarmine), Evansville Memorial’s Kyle Kuric (Louisville), Brownsburg’s Julian Mavunga (Miami, Ohio), Chesterton’s Zack Novak (Michigan), and Warren Central’s Walter Offutt (Ohio State).

That still leaves a fair amount of talent to stick around the neighborhood, so to speak. Three of the seven – Edgewood’s Garrett Butcher, Brownsburg’s Gordon Hayward, and New Castle’s Chase Stigall – are headed to Hinkle Fieldhouse and Butler University.

The Indianapolis duo of Larry Stone (Indianapolis Howe Academy) and Alex Young (Indianapolis Northwest), meanwhile, is headed to IUPUI. Plymouth’s Randy Davis will play for Ball State, and Carmel’s Daniel Moore is one of Indiana University coach Tom Crean’s first recruits.

The 14-member team will be coached by Muncie South’s Rick Baumgartner, whose assistants are John Boyd (Gary West) and Kevin Oxley (Tecumseh). The Indiana All-Stars will play Kentucky in a home-and-home series in June.

“We have a lot of perimeter players because that’s where we felt the strength was in the group,” Baumgartner told the Star. “We also have a lot of versatility and a lot of depth, and we’re going to need depth because, including the two Junior exhibitions, we will play four games in seven days.”

The boys 2008 roster (name, school, height, scoring average, college):

•    Garrett Butcher, Edgewood, 6’7”, 25.2, Butler
•    Randy Davis, Plymouth, 5’11”, 22.9, Ball State
•    Gordon Hayward, Brownsburg, 6’8”, 18.0, Butler
•    Braydon Hobbs, New Albany, 6’5”, 15.5, Bellarmine
•    Kyle Kuric, Evansville Memorial, 6’4”, 20.8, Louisville
•    Julian Mavunga, Brownsburg, 6’8”, 18.8, Miami (Ohio)
•    Julius Mays, Marion, 6’2”, 18.6, North Carolina State
•    Daniel Moore, Carmel, 5’10”, 13.5, Indiana
•    Zack Novak, Chesterton, 6’5”, 26.9, Michigan
•    Walter Offutt, Warren Central, 6’3”, n/a, Ohio State
•    Chase Stigall, New Castle, 6’4”, 21.2, Butler
•    Larry Stone, Indianapolis Howe Academy, 5’9”, 22.0, IUPUI
•    Alex Young, Indianapolis Northwest, 6’5”, 18.6, IUPUI
•    Tyler Zeller, Washington, 7’0”, 33.2, North Carolina

Coach: Rick Baumgartner, Muncie South
Assistants: John Boyd, Gary West; Kevin Oxley, Tecumseh

NSA Girls Fast Pitch, USSSA April Sports Jam at Midwest, Brownsburg

The final weekend of April brought a pair of highly anticipated youth softball tournaments to the Indianapolis area as the NSA Girls Fast Pitch and USSSA April Sports Jam events took place at Midwest Sports Complex and BGSL Park, respectively.

NSA Girls Fast Pitch @ Midwest
In the 10-and-Under event at Midwest, Carmel Sting exited pool play as the No. 1 seed after being the only undefeated team. That perfection was soon erased, however, by Center Grove Xplosion in a 9-3 victory in the double-elimination round. (Xplosion had advanced by pounding Rampage 11-3.) But the Sting came back to beat Xplosion 11-1, setting up an if-necessary clash for the crown. The finale was very competitive with Carmel scoring two runs late and holding on to finish the deal with an 8-6 win.
