GBB SEMISTATES: Pendleton Heights to face 4A #2 SB Washington

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

PENDLETON – It is a big thing to make the final four of a state tournament in any sport. In Indiana, it is a huge thing to make the final four of the basketball tournament.

If you happen to live in Madison County, it is the fulfillment of a dream that is hammered into every youth from infancy.

That is exactly the position the Pendleton Heights Arabians will find themselves in this Saturday. Pendleton Heights is traveling to Plymouth Feb. 28 to meet mighty South Bend Washington in the northern Class 4A semistate.

Hoosier Authority sat down with Pendleton Heights seniors Lacey Martin and Amanda Gaskin (below), and with coach Shari Doud, after practice on Thursday and discussed what it means to be this far down the tourney trail. Enjoy!

BB: 4A #1 Bloomington South ends perfect with 84-72 win at Decatur Central

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – The temperature outside was 60 degrees at game time, but
that was nuthin’ compared with the net-scorching efforts of Class 4A
top-ranked Bloomington South Feb. 26 in the unbeaten Panthers’ final
regular-season game against Decatur Central.

Bloomington South drilled six 3-pointers in the opening period, racing
out to 27 first-quarter points and a double-digit lead that was never
really threatened as the Panthers put a big ol’ exclamation point on a
perfect 20-0 season with their 84-72 victory.

(TO CHECK OUT PICTURES FROM THE CRAWFORDSVILLE-BATESVILLE GAME BY OUR OWN MARK GRICIUS, CLICK HERE!!)

In the process, 27th-year Bloomington South coach J.R. Holmes garnered his 600th career win. He’s 457-169 at South, where Holmes has led the Panthers to six regional titles and 11 sectional crowns. But that magical career includes neither a single semistate nor state title at the Bloomington school, begging the question:

Can this group of perfect Panthers survive four rounds of postseason play?

Based on the offensive output seen this evening (57-percent shooting, including an 11-of-23 bombs-away performance from 3-point distance), it will take a sledgehammer to sidetrack this balanced, cohesive, and highly talented group.

Then again, even a sledgehammer might not be enough.

Witness the moxie of the Panthers’ Mr. Basketball candidate, Jordan Hulls. After getting knocked out of the game with a blow to the face that very well may have broken his nose following a magnetic 12-point first quarter, the 6-foot senior guard spent portions of the second and third periods in the locker room before returning to action with 34 seconds left in the third stanza.

After watching Decatur Central 5’8”, 130-pound sophomore guard Brandon Ledford’s 3-pointer whittle Bloomington South’s lead to a perhaps-manageable dozen at 62-50, Hulls ended the quarter with a three attempt from the top of the key. The shot – not surprisingly – was off, but Hulls’ second effort certainly wasn’t.

With a nose jammed full of gauze, Hulls followed the shot, grabbed it in traffic in the paint, and made a gorgeous scoop shot just ahead of the buzzer to re-establish who was king on this night. Decatur cut the lead to nine to start the fourth quarter, but the powerful Panthers’ advantage was never in doubt as they instantly built the lead back to 17 before coasting.

About the only thing resembling a weakness on this night for Bloomington South, which enjoyed leads of 12, 12, and 14 points after the first three stops, was a putrid 38-percent effort (5 of 13) from the foul line.

Wanna know what an uphill climb the home-standing Hawks faced against this terror of a team? Decatur Central was 5 of 8 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort from behind the 3-point arc …and still trailed 27-15 after the first eight minutes.

Yeesh.

And it’s not like Decatur Central didn’t bring its “A” game, either. The Hawks shot exactly 50 percent from the field (25 of 50) and from behind the arc (9 of 18). Their free throw percentage was a vastly superior 77 percent (13 of 17), and they committed 12 turnovers compared with 11 for Bloomington South.

Still, the Panthers’ firepower and depth is daunting.

Hulls led all scorers with 21 points. He was joined in double figures by 6’3” junior Jake Mullinix (19 points on torrid 8-of-9 shooting) and 6’3” sophomore Spencer Turner (18 points featuring 5-of-9 sniping from treyland), while sophomore guard Darwin “Dee” Davis Jr. and 6’8” junior Erik Fromm added eight each for Bloomington South.

Decatur Central, the Mid-State Conference champion that concluded its best season ever under 15th-year coach Dave Oberle at 16-4, were led by the 19 points of senior guard Alec Dye, the school’s all-time assist leader. Six-five senior Blake Beasley, who pushed the Hawks out to an 8-5 lead on a pair of long jumpers in the game’s first 90 seconds, added 16, while senior guard Sean Gregerson had 12 and 5’8” senior Pat Sharpe 11.

Decatur Central will face Indianapolis Tech (3-16) next Wednesday, March 5, in opening-round action of Sectional 12 at Pike. Should the Hawks win that, there’s an excellent possibility of a semifinal rematch with defending 4A state champion Brownsburg, which Decatur Central nearly took out early last year in a narrow 37-35 defeat.

Next up for Bloomington South, meanwhile, is the bye game in the five-team Sectional 14 at Columbus North. But watch out for that potential championship bout with East Central, Panthers fans. It was just a year ago that the upstart Trojans shocked Bloomington South in the sectional, holding the high-powered Panthers to just 30 points in a 33-30 upset win.

BB RANKINGS: Tipton takes over at 2A No. 1

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Associated Press has released its 14th set of polls for the 2008-09 boys basketball season, and Tipton is back on top in Class 2A. The Blue Devils swap spots with last week’s top 2A team, defending state champion Fort Wayne Luers.

The other previous leaders – 4A Bloomington South, 3A Princeton, and 1A Bowman Academy – stay the same entering the final week of regular-season play. But there’s still plenty of movement going on.

Zionsville (12th) and Merrillville (15th) are new this week in 4A, where the top seven schools do not budge. In 3A, Danville goes from eighth to fifth, Roncalli bumps up four spots from 13th to ninth, and Peru rises into the Top 10 from 12th to No. 10. Wapahani moves from eighth to fifth in 2A, Oak Hill goes from 10th to seventh, and Austin ascends from 13th to 10th. And in 1A, Cowan goes from 13th to 10th.

Of historical note:

Three individuals who won state championships a year ago, including a state-record holder, return as the 72nd Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals take place this weekend at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

All three hail from the northwestern reaches of the state, including Chesterton’s Kyle Whitaker (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly), teammate Bill Bass (500 freestyle), and Lake Central’s Chris Johnson (100 breaststroke).

Whitaker is the two-time defending state champion in both events and set a state record in the IM during last year’s championships. He was also part of two winning relays in 2008 and totals six blue-ribbon medals through his first two seasons. The junior is the top seed again in the IM at 1:50.85 and sits second in the butterfly with a :49.95 to Munster’s Kevin Behrens (:48.69).

Bass’ win in the 500 free last year vaulted Chesterton into the team lead for good, and the Trojans went on to capture the school’s first boys swimming and diving state title. The senior clocked a 4:43.11 in last weekend’s sectional for the eighth-best time. Brandon Siemasko of North Central (Indianapolis) owns the top time of 4:38.09.

Whitaker, Bass, and a strong supporting cast that includes the top-seeded 200 medley relay should have the Trojans contending for another shot at the championship this Saturday.

Johnson timed in at :57.47 to take the top seed in the 100 ****** last Saturday, just under a second slower than his state championship-winning time of :56.56 from 2008.

Hamilton Southeastern junior Nathan Kinney enters the weekend as the top seed in two events – the 100 freestyle (:45.13) and 100 backstroke (:50.28).

North Central and Carmel lead the field with 16 entries each, while Homestead follows with 15, Franklin Central 14, and Center Grove and Connersville 13 each.

Center Grove and Munster each won its record 24th consecutive sectional title last Saturday, while defending state champ Chesterton captured its 11th straight.

Preliminary swimming heats get underway Friday night at 6 p.m. ET. The top 16 in each event will return for competition on Saturday, with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. (Those finishing ninth through 16th on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats.

All diving will take place on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m., with the top 21 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each.

All championship and consolation finals, including diving, will commence at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday.

FB: Re-classification for 2009, 2010 football seasons

From ihsaa.org

Following approval by the IHSAA Executive Committee at its Feb. 20 meeting, Commissioner Blake Ress announced the enrollment figures and classifications for each football-playing member school for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.

The enrollment figures – the total of boys and girls in grades 9-12 – were submitted by the member schools to the Indiana Department of Education and are used to determine which schools play in each of the five classifications. Football is reclassified every two years, while the sports of baseball, basketball, softball, and volleyball are currently in the second of a four-year cycle.

A total of 27 schools will play in a different classification than they had in the previous two-year cycle. Sectional assignments will be announced this spring once they are determined by members of the football realignment committee.

Per IHSAA By-Law, C-2-3c, a school may opt to play up one or more classes in a specific sport for that classification period by notifying the IHSAA.

NOTE: HoosierAuthority.com went “inside the numbers” a bit to do some comparison shopping. Of significance:

The three largest schools in Indiana remain the same: No. 1 Ben Davis (enrollment of 4,500), No. 2 Carmel (4,170), and Warren Central (3,820). Penn supplants North Central (Indianapolis) as the state’s fourth-largest school at 3,431, while North Central (3,240) drops to fifth.

Fourteen Class 5A schools “grew” five spots or more: Franklin Central (16th to 11th), Avon (18th to 12th), Noblesville (21st to 15th), Brownsburg (25th to 20th), Fishers (38th to 29th), Southport (37th to 30th), Decatur Central (53rd to 44th), Fort Wayne North (57th to 52nd), Zionsville (67th to 54th), Jennings County (63rd to 57th), Westfield (70th to 58th), Columbus East (65th to 59th), East Chicago Central (72nd to 62nd), and Whiteland (73rd to 63rd).

Meanwhile, seven 5A schools downsized by five or more spots: Merrillville (10th to 17th), Fort Wayne Northrop (13th to 19th), Indianapolis Tech (20th to 27th), Michigan City (29th to 36th), Bloomington South (40th to 45th), Mishawaka (47th to 53rd), and Richmond (51st to 61st).

Among the other four classes:

•    Seventeen 4A schools move up the enrollment totem pole, with three Gary schools making the largest leaps: Gary Wallace (126th to 103rd), Gary Roosevelt (140th to 119th), and Gary West (81st to 66th). Meanwhile, three Indianapolis schools are among the five 4A schools moving down the most: Indianapolis Arlington (58th to 117th), Indianapolis Northwest (101st to 122nd), and Indianapolis Manual (88th to 106th). The other big droppers are Muncie South (102nd to 116th) and Anderson (56th to 69th).

•    Five 3A schools move up 20 spots or more: Princeton (185th to 162nd), Jimtown (203rd to 180th), Western (164th to 143rd), Gibson Southern (177th to 156th), and West Noble (174th to 154th). Among those 3A schools going down, Indianapolis Chatard (150th to 172nd) and Benton Central (171st to 186th) move the furthest.

•    In 2A, four schools make moves upward of 15 or more spots: Indianapolis Ritter (255th to 229th), Garrett (221st to 202nd), Monrovia (247th to 228th), and Bremen (245th to 230th). On the flip side, the three biggest mover-downers are Indianapolis Washington (206th to 245th), Crawford County (184th to 208th), and North Posey (213th to 233rd).

•    In Class A, Whiting (311th to 290th) and Guerin Catholic (278th to 261st) are the two largest risers. And a half-dozen schools – North Knox (233rd to 262nd), Winamac (241st to 260th), Culver Community (282nd to 300th), Eastern Greene (252nd to 269th), Northfield (260th to 276th), and Linton (266th to 282nd) – get smaller by 16 or more spots.
