FB: Second week of the season a disaster for 5A top teams

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Halloween came two months early for a great many of the state’s top-ranked Class 5A teams Aug. 28. Just look at the list of fallen heroes:

•    No. 2 Ben Davis loses 7-6 at 5A No. 4 Penn.
•    No. 3 Warren Central drops a 35-32 home game to 4A No. 1 Indianapolis Cathedral.
•    No. 5 Fort Wayne Snider is shocked at home by Fort Wayne South, 25-20.
•    No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern suffers its first-ever defeat to host Fishers, 10-6.
•    No. 9 Pike falls 24-7 at 5A No. 1 Center Grove.
•    No. 11 Columbus North drops a lightning-delayed-till-Saturday 24-21 affair at rival 5A No. 8 Columbus East.
•    No. 13 Lawrence Central succumbs at home to North Central (Indianapolis) – a team that went 1-9 a year ago.
•    No. 18 Avon loses its home opener, 24-13, to Westfield – a team it had beaten at least nine times in a row.

Yipes!

Granted two of the losses – Columbus North’s defeat at Columbus East, Pike’s road loss at defending state champion CG – followed form according to the most recent coaches’ poll. But North’s downfall came after lightning delayed a Pigskin Scramble battle it had dominated to the tune of a 21-6 halftime lead, and Pike buried itself with early mistakes and penalties.

A case also could be made for Warren’s three-point loss to defending 4A state champion Cathedral. But the Warriors blew a 21-7 lead, and they’re gonna have to win one of these marquee clashes after lopsided losses last year (31-17 vs. Carmel and 56-7 at Center Grove in the regular season, 45-23 at home to Ben Davis in the regional) in coach John Hart’s debut season at the Indianapolis Eastside football factory.

Stay tuned this weekend for a recap of some of those Week 2 losses … till then, enjoy these five pictures from Center Grove’s victory over Pike, courtesy of Jeff Hemmer!!

BT John Shirley Inv.: #4 Brebeuf whips loaded field for crown

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

INDIANAPOLIS – The John Shirley Invitational held each year at North Central (Indianapolis) is actually a 16-team affair. The teams, however, play in two eight-team brackets – the top teams play in the Shirley Division, while the remaining eight play in the Buckley Division.

The field changes each year based on the performance of the previous year. The top team in the lower division moves up, while the last-place team in the upper division moves down.

You may properly conclude that the Brebeuf Braves have moved up as far as they possibly can. The fourth-ranked Braves were the entrant that was transferred this year from the lower division to the bracket containing the top eight teams, and they are definitely going to stay.

Brebeuf, you see, won the event by an 11-point margin, claiming three of the five individual championships.

The dominance started at No. 1 singles, where Dougie Barnard defeated Jami Clark of North Central 6-4, 6-7, 7-6(10-3) in the final. The Braves then captured both doubles titles – the No. 1 duo of Charlie Hurst and Chris Plump downing Center Grove’s Cameron Hardin and Caleb Fellers 6-2 and 7-5, the No. 2 unit of Rico Lumanlun and R. Kowlowitz easily defeating North Central’s Matt Johnson and Sam Pfeffer 6-2, 6-1.

The day’s other two champions were Ben Cardwell of North Central, who prevailed at No. 2 singles due to a forfeit, and Rashan Shah of Park Tudor at No. 3 singles.

Team scores
1. #4 Brebeuf 41
2. #6 North Central (Indianapolis) 30
3. #1 Carmel 27
3. #9 Park Tudor 27
5. #3 Center Grove 15
6. #2 Indianapolis Cathedral 14
7. #10 Munster 8
8. #11 Homestead 5

FB: 5A #8 Columbus East rallies to stun 5A #11 Columbus North, 24-21

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

COLUMBUS – I’ve often said that it sometimes feels like there’s an Eeyore clouds followin’ me around. How else to explain my presence at the state’s only suspended-by-lightning high school football game Aug. 28?

Class 5A No. 11 Columbus North had established momentum with touchdowns on its first three possessions in building a 21-6 lead over 5A eighth-ranked host Columbus East at halftime of the 30th annual matchup held this year at Stafford Field. But the Olympians returned a fumble for a score on the first play of the third quarter, and they had the ball trailing by eight at the Bull Dogs’ 24 when the lightning delay struck with 8:04 left in the third period.

After a downpour-laden delay of 84 minutes, the decision was made to postpone the contest to 1 p.m. ET Saturday.

Under sunny skies and far-better weather conditions Saturday, East turned that third quarter shift in momentum into something to tell the grandkids about in shocking the Bull Dogs, 24-21.

FB: Uncle Mike’s Notebook Week 2

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Two weeks in a row of rain is doing nothing for Uncle Mike’s disposition. It isn’t easy being a bald man in the rain, so watch out – his observations may be even crankier than usual.

Here we go …

Northern Indiana
Churubusco 39, Central Noble 0
Repeat after me: “It is only because of their schedule. It is only because of their schedule.”

Crown Point 14, Hobart 7
Just another classic from those wild and crazy offensive geniuses in “The Region.”

East Noble 41, Northridge 7
Remember this one. We may look back on this as the first sign of a new power up north.

Mishawaka 43, Goshen 0
Once again, Mishawaka shows indications this might be the year they win the only game that matters, which is against Penn. You will excuse me if I am not quite ready to drink the Kool-Aid.

Plymouth 42, Rochester 7
I don’t care who you are. If you beat Rochester by this much, you are pretty darn good.

Whiting 59, Hammond Gavit 0
Ah, it reminds me of when I was a wee lad back in ’49.

Lafayette Central Catholic 68, Benton Central 0
Well, at least it wasn’t 94, or whatever ridiculous total it was that one time last year.

Fort Wayne South 25, Fort Wayne Snider 20
(From guess smart-alec Aylsworth) There was no way I was letting Grandma Hernia not mention Sheridan losing last week, then not mention Snider losing this week (see Sign, Apocalypse below).

Central Indiana
Penn 7, Ben Davis 6
The big-game problems continue for the Giants.

Hamilton Heights 20, Sheridan 3
Sheridan 0-2? It has to be a sign of the Apocalypse.

Delta 23, New Palestine 0
Would somebody please remind the Eagles they are not supposed to win with defense? They are supposed to score more points than their basketball team, then hold on for dear life.

Fishers 10, Hamilton Southeastern 6
Uh, oh … Little Brother is all grown up now.

Muncie South 12, Muncie Central 7
OK, they can start basketball season.

Southwood 18, Oak Hill 7
The (Golden) Eagle has landed … with a thud.

Westfield 24, Avon 13
I think the word is WOW.

Southern Indiana
Bloomington North 31, Bedford North Lawrence 6
This is the second week in a row these guys have actually played defense. Somebody might want to pay attention.

Charlestown 35, Brownstown 14
… and the Pirates are a public school. That has to sting.

Evansville Central 36, Evansville Mater Dei 35 (OT)
Is there any doubt this was the game of the night?

Heritage Hills 63, Tell City 13
Memo to Southern Indiana schools: You are better off to just let them win every year. See what happens when you honk them off?

Jennings County 25, Greensburg 9
Wai-wai-wait. Jennings County won AND scored more than 20 points on the same night? The Chicago Cubs will now win 27 games in a row, make the playoffs, win the World Series, and lower ticket prices. Hey, c’mon – the odds are relatively the same.

Sullivan 13, Linton 6
Oh, seriously. This has to be an episode of “America’s Best Practical Jokes and Bloopers.”

FB: Sloppy 3A #19 Western Boone outlasts 1A #11 Clinton Central, 20-13

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

MICHIGANTOWN – They won the game and dominated play, but you can bet all was not sunshine and roses in the Western Boone locker room after the Class 3A 19th-ranked Stars’ 20-13 victory Aug. 28 over 1A No. 11 host Clinton Central.

It is likely that WeBo coach Jeff Pearson ordered a mandatory inspection of his players’ feet. He certainly would be justified as the Stars shot themselves in the foot so often during the contest that he had to wonder if there were enough healthy extremities left to walk to the bus.

Western Boone suffered three lost fumbles, a blocked field goal, one huge loss, and an illegal procedure penalty … all inside the Clinton Central 30-yard line. Nonetheless, the Stars were superior enough to escape with a 20-13 triumph.

The frustration began early for Western Boone (2-0). After holding the Bulldogs (1-1) to a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession, the Stars methodically drove to the Clinton Central 18 – only to fumble away the scoring chance.

Their second drive stalled in the red zone and resulted in a field goal attempt from the 16-yard line being blocked.

The result was a scoreless first quarter.

Western Boone finally broke through on its third try. The Stars took over early in the second quarter at the Clinton Central 38 and immediately moved to 1st and goal via a 34-yard pass from Jared Knox to Tyler Squibb. Two plays, later Josh DeBard found paydirt to put Western Boone ahead 7-0 after the extra point.

The hard-earned advantage, however, would not last long.

Clinton Central’s Cody Cannaday returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards to the Western Boone 7. Cannaday then turned the right corner on 3rd and 9 for the tying score. Oddly, the Bulldogs scored a touchdown before they had ever gained a first down in the game.

Still, they left the field at halftime tied 7-7.

Western Boone continued to engage in self destruction early in the third quarter. The Stars immediately drove inside the Clinton Central 19 only to fumble away another opportunity. But on their second attempt of the half they hit paydirt with an 11-yard TD pass from Knox to family member Ryan Knox.

Even this score, however, did not come easily. The Stars had 2nd and goal at the 5 and proceeded to lose six yards when Knox slipped on a rollout. They also failed to convert the PAT.

Nonetheless, Western Boone once again held the lead, 13-7.

The margin lasted exactly one play. Cannaday went 70 yards on the Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage to tie the score. Clinton Central also failed on the extra point, leaving the contest deadlocked at 13 apiece.

Western Boone continued to power the ball on the ground and struck for the game-winning score midway through the final stanza. It came on a one-yard plunge from Jeff Pursel. Yet even this drive was not without adventure.

Having moved into the red zone, Western Boone committed what appeared to be a crucial illegal procedure penalty. But Clinton Central immediately gave the yardage back with an infraction of its own.

The Bulldogs mounted one final charge in the game’s waning moments, but Ryan Knox ended the home fans’ hopes with an interception at the Western Boone 2 in the final minute.

Western Boone will open Sagamore Conference play Sept. 4 at Danville (1-1). A 13-0 Week 2 winner over Crawfordsville. Clinton Central, meanwhile, travels to 1A top-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic following the 2-0 Knights’ 68-0 blanking of Benton Central.

GG RANKINGS: Carmel narrows gap on Roncalli after head-to-head win

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association has released its third set of rankings for the 2009-10 season, and the news this time around is Carmel’s closing of the gap with top-ranked Roncalli.

Following a two-stroke win Aug. 24 over the Rebels in a three-way match hosted by Warren Central, Carmel moves up one space into second. The ’Hounds trade spots with defending state champion Hamilton Southeastern, with Martinsville and Columbus North maintaining their previous locations at Nos. 4-5.

Penn is this week’s big mover-upper of significance as the Kingsmen rise from 11th to seventh, while Fishers ascends from 26th to 20th. Jasper is the lone school new to the rankings this week at No. 25, while a trio of schools drops out: Bloomington South, Greensburg, and Warsaw.

Stay tuned to HoosierAuthority.com for the most comprehensive high school girls golf coverage in Indiana! For now, here’s your Top 25 from Aug. 27 with ranking followed by school, vote total, and first-place votes if applicable (thank you, Dave Patz!):
