BXC STATE FINALS: #1 Columbus North completes sweep with boys title

From ihsaa.org
The top-ranked Columbus North boys team and Futsum Zeinasellassie of North Central (Indianapolis) took championship honors Oct. 31 at the IHSAA Boys Cross Country State Finals at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute.
Zeinasellassie, last year’s state runner-up as a freshman, returned to capture the top spot in 15:51.6 over the soggy, 5,000-meter course. He became the first sophomore to win the boys race in 10 years and the second North Central product to do so (Bart Phariss, 1997).
Carmel junior Chris Walden came in second (16:01.0), Brownsburg senior Scott Vicenzi was third (16:02.5), Chesterton senior David Osborn finished fourth (16:06.1), and North Harrison senior Tyler Byrne rounded out the first five (16:14.6).
In the team competition, Columbus North totaled 63 points, outdistancing sixth-ranked Chesterton (131) by 68, for the school’s third boys cross country state championship. Rick Weinheimer, the Columbus North boys and girls coach, also led the Bull Dogs to state titles in 2002 and 2003.
No. 3 North Central was third with 189, No. 2 Carmel fourth at 203, and surprising No. 12 North Harrison fifth with 212.
Columbus North’s Andrew Diehn, a sophomore, led the Bull Dogs’ five scoring runners. Diehn finished ninth overall in 16:23.5. The next three finished 17th, 18th and 19th. Senior Evan Scruton was 17th (16:37.2) and was followed by sophomore Christopher Kelsey (16:40.0) and senior Corbin Brooks (16:41.6). Junior Gabe Ocasio placed 45th overall in 16:49.2.
It was the eighth time a school swept both genders and second year in a row after Carmel pulled the trick in 2008.
Chesterton’s Osborn named Mental Attitude Award winner
Following the race, Chesterton senior David Osborn was named as the winner of the Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to the school in his name.
The award is presented annually by the IHSAA Executive Committee to the senior who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability during his four years of high school.
Osborn finished fourth at the state finals, helping the Trojans to a second-place team finish. The son of Ted and Carolyn Osborn is a three-time All-State selection.
Academically, he ranks in the Top 50 of his senior class and serves as vice president of the National Honor Society. He’s undecided about college but intends to major in chemical engineering.

GXC STATE FINALS: #2 Columbus North shocks #1 Carmel for first title

From ihsaa.org
It was a day of firsts Oct. 31 for the big winners in the girls cross country state finals as second-ranked Columbus North won the team competition and Terre Haute North’s Tapring Goatee took the individual medal at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
Columbus North, which finished third in last week’s semistate, won the school’s first state championship in girls cross country with 96 points and matched their male schoolmates to sweep both genders. Columbus North became the eighth school to win both titles in the same year, one year after Carmel won both.
The Bull Dogs finished 82 points better than top-ranked Carmel (178) in their upset victory, the fifth-widest team margin in the 29 years of the girls finals. No. 3 Franklin Central (183) placed third, while No. 4 Noblesville edged sixth-ranked Carroll (Fort Wayne) for fourth place on the tiebreaker after each finished at 186.
The Bull Dogs were led by junior Jessica Richardson, who finished ninth overall (19:48.0). She was joined by senior Siri Retrum in 16th (19:53.3), senior Virginia Steilberg in 31st (20:14.8), sophomore Erin Shuffett in 34th (20:23.4), and freshman Rachael Sollman in 41st (20:33.0).
Goatee, a freshman who missed part of the cross country season with injuries, led virtually from start to finish and became the first Terre Haute runner – regardless of school – to win the girls state meet. She covered the wet 5,000-meter course in 19:07.9, nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place Dana Payonk, a senior from Lake Central (19:15.8).
Crown Point junior Laicee Pierce took third (19:33.2), Valparaiso sophomore Katelyn Devries was fourth (19:36.6), and Carmel sophomore Sarah Bennett ended fifth (19:37.1).
Lake Central’s Payonk wins Mental Attitude Award
Lake Central senior Dana Payonk was named the winner of the 2009 Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee following the event. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to the school in her name.
The award is presented annually to the senior who best demonstrates excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability in her high school career.
Payonk finished second at the state finals (her second Top 4 finish in a row), and she has been part of two Lake Central state runner-up teams (2007, 2008). As a member of the Indians’ track & field team, she has qualified for the state meet each of her first three years.
Academically, she ranks fourth in her class of 700 students. The daughter of Jack and Kathy Payonk of St. John is undecided on her college choice but is considering studying software engineering.
Here are the complete Halloween results:

FB 5A SECT. 6: Brownsburg springs 20-14 upset at #14 Zionsville

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer
ZIONSVILLE – As much as Hoosier Crossroads Conference foes Brownsburg and Zionsville do not like each other, it appeared Oct. 30 that the weather disliked them even more. The last time these two HCC foes met, it was a nasty night much like tonight.
Zionsville managed to hold on for a 7-6 victory in that Week 8 regular-season meeting, but it was opportunistic Brownsburg that came out on top in an absolute mud bowl of a Class 5A Sectional 6 semifinal, 20-14.
No. 14 host Zionsville looked like it might have the upper hand early on, sacking Brownsburg junior quarterback Robby Robbins for a seven-yard loss that resulted in a six-yard punt. Taking over at the Brownsburg 26, however, the Eagles’ initial drive stalled at the 10, and the Bulldogs’ subsequent 27-yard field goal attempt from senior Daniel Wilson pulled to the left.
Zionsville was able to capitalize on the Dawgs’ next possession, forcing a punt that got knocked down by a strong wind and dropped at the feet of junior Max Youngs near the Brownsburg 23. Youngs picked up the ball, looked around, saw no one in front of him, and headed for the end zone.
After a bad snap failed the extra-point kick, the Eagles led 6-0 with 4:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Just before halftime, however, Brownsburg took a 7-6 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by junior Kennedy Hill. The Dawgs then opened up a 14-6 lead midway through the third quarter after taking advantage of excellent field position following a 25-yard line-drive punt that placed them at the Zionsville 32.
On the next play, senior Darryl Jordan burst through the center of the defense and raced 32 yards to the end zone with 5:16 left in the period. Kyle Christy’s touchback kickoff forced the Eagles to begin their next possession at the 20, and once again Brownsburg made them pay dearly.
On 2nd and 14 from the 16, Zionsville QB Roberts rolled left in the mud and – seriously – shot a free throw over a defender to Blake Lueders at the 17. Lueders turned upfield and reached the 22 before getting stuck by Brownsburg’s Tory Nibbs.
The ball flew out, and the fumble was recovered at the Zionsville 22 by Josh Marcovich with 4:03 to play in the quarter. On a subsequent 2nd and goal from the 7, Robbins found Charles Turwudzo in the end zone, and suddenly Brownsburg held a 20-6 lead with 79 sceonds left before the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs sacrificed a pair of points when, punting from deep in their end, they opted to take a safety that made it 20-8. Zionsville closed within 20-14 on a 26-yard touchdown run by Austin Stauffer, but the PAT was blocked with 2:34 left in the contest. When the ensuing onside kick was recovered by Brownsburg, the Bulldogs were able to hang on for the victory.
The Bulldogs advance to face fellow HCC rival Avon next weekend. The Orioles (5-6), a 10-7 upset Week 11 winner over eighth-ranked host Pike, have now knocked off consecutive ranked foes in consecutive weeks after dispatching of No. 12 Ben Davis a week ago.

FB 3A SECT. 21: #1 Chatard has no problem at Southmont in 35-0 romp

By Cale Stephens
thepaper24.7.com
NEW MARKET – Indianapolis Chatard senior running back Ari Pappas rushed his way past his second Montgomery County team in two weeks Oct. 30.
Pappas gained 269 yards on the ground and scored four touchdowns as the Class 3A No. 1 Trojans downed Southmont, 35-0, in a Sectional 21 semifinal game played in the sloppiest of field conditions.
(CHECK THE GALLERY FOR GAME PICTURES FROM RYAN MANERS OF RUSTED ROOF PHOTOGRAPHY!!)
The Trojans (10-1) advance to the sectional championship game at No. 8 Brebeuf. The Braves (10-1) defeated North Montgomery, 21-7, in Friday’s other sectional semifinal.
What little offense Southmont (8-3) had was in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Logan Petry led the Mounties to four first downs in the opening quarter, when Chatard was shut out.
After that, the flood gates were opened.
In the raging downpour of the second quarter, the Trojans posted three touchdowns and 180 yards of offense. Pappas, who gained 182 yards in Chatard’s first-round sectional win against Crawfordsville last week, accounted for all of the yardage and all three scores.
“[Chatard] obviously made some adjustments to what we were doing,” said Southmont coach Desson Hannum. “We were trying to spread them out and get a better look at their defense.
“They out-executed us. A lot of our guys play both ways. [Chatard] was able to sub guys in and out on defense. It wore us down.”
The Mounties gained 94 of their 125 total yards in the first half. Nine fumbles (only one lost) hampered their offense in the slick conditions of the second half.
“We had trouble with the snap later on,” Hannum said. “The ball was tough to handle. We had a tough time later on adapting to the muddy conditions.”
Southmont ended its season with its most wins since recording eight in 1982. The Mounties also picked up their first football Sagamore Conference championship, finishing 6-1 in conference play and winning the title outright.
“When we look back at the season, I think we’ll be happy with what we accomplished,” Hannum said. “I don’t think anyone expected us to have an 8-3 record or win the conference. Those are things to be proud of.”
In three years as the head coach, Hannum has more sectional wins (three) than in the previous seven years (two).
“I hope [the culture at Southmont] has changed,” Hannum said. “I don’t know for sure. We’ll find out after this year. It depends on if we can get guys to come out for the football team.
“The guys on this team, in the three years I’ve been here, have put in a lot of work. That’s what it’s going to take. We need to get the guys out and have the work and the effort.”
Eleven Mounties played their final football game, including Petry, running backs Jordan Burkett and Tanner Hill, and lineman Colton Livingston.
“These seniors have been with us all the way,” Hannum said. “They’ve stuck with it in hard times and good times. They’ve kept their nose to the grindstone and shown the community that we can be successful as a football program.”

FB: Uncle Mike’s Notebook Week 11

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
After contacting his extensive network of sources, Uncle Mike has publicly proclaimed there is no truth to the rumor that there was a bidding war among Indiana high schools on National Candy Corn Day to get the AFLAC duck to enroll and suit up at running back.
Seriously, bad weather is a part of football. But it is disappointing that it has played such a big part for four weeks in a row.
Nonetheless, Uncle Mike has gleaned some pearls of wisdom from this week’s results …
CLASS 5A
SECTIONAL 1
Portage 14, Chesterton 0
Indians ought to beat Trojans. After all, they have 2,500 years of evolutionary advancement on their side. Wow, that has to be the first time anybody has ever said Portage was more evolved than Chesterton.
SECTIONAL 2
Penn 14, South Bend Adams 7
OK, this is getting ridiculous. Penn’s freshmen should beat Adams worse than that.
SECTIONAL 3
Warsaw 10, Homestead 7
Live by the pass, die by the monsoon.
SECTIONAL 6
Anybody who said this was going to be a Brownsburg vs. Avon final would have been hauled away by men in little white coats.
SECTIONAL 7
Bloomington North 49, Whiteland 42
There is no rational explanation for 91 points being scored in this weather.
CLASS 4A
SECTIONAL 12
Delta 7, Muncie South 6
Obviously, Delta would like some better weather next week against Dwenger. Logan Young is not nearly as big a weapon on a night like this.
SECTIONAL 13
Anderson Highland 21, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 20 (2OT)
Anderson Highland should rent itself out as a clinical study in multiple personalities.
SECTIONAL 14
Indianapolis Cathedral 24, Mooresville 9
A funny thing happened on the way to the coronation – somebody forgot to tell Mooresville. The Pioneers were a dropped pass away from the potential tying score in the fourth quarter of this one.
SECTIONAL 16
It is a Jasper vs. Evansville Reitz final next week, and that will be THE game in the state.
CLASS 3A
SECTIONAL 18
NorthWood vs. Jimtown. A civil war in the final. You gotta love it.
SECTIONAL 20
Frankfort 30, Peru 0
Peru went as far backward on its first possession of the second half as they had gone forward in the entire first half. Talk about being directionally impaired.
SECTIONAL 23
A date with Heritage Hills is waiting for Indian Creek next week. I’ll bet those annual trips to Brownstown are really fond memories right about now.
CLASS 2A
SECTIONAL 27
Fort Wayne Luers 35, Eastern (Greentown) 22
This is a really respectable performance by the Comets.
SECTIONAL 29
Indianapolis Ritter 6, Heritage Christian 0
Xbox Football Version 2.0 was clearly not waterproof.
SECTIONAL 30
North Putnam beat Tri- West Hendricks, 4-0. That is the second 4-0 game there has been this season. That has to be one of the great mathematical oddities in the history of man. In addition to that, Monrovia beat South Putnam, 6-3. That means there was a total of 13 points scored in the two games combined. Are these guys under the mistaken impression they are in the Duneland Conference? I am checking the rosters for Polish or Serbian surnames.
SECTIONAL 31
Brownstown won and Providence lost. Brownstown has to be really disappointed. They are going to miss out on their annual whine and cheese party.
CLASS A
SECTIONAL 36
Northeastern 7, Tri 0
Cinderella is alive and well and living in Lynn. By the way, that has to be a very boring place for a fairy tale character to live.
SECTIONAL 39
This is a Rockville vs. Fountain Central final and is the second-best game in the state next week. It also lends itself to some great promo titles: “Battle in the Boonies,” “War along the Wabash,” “Mustangs versus the guys who don’t know how to spell the word Rocks,” etc.
SECTIONAL 40
North Daviess 14, Perry Central 7
Party at the cheese factory!

FB 5A SECT. 4: #1 Carmel survives brutal weather in 7-0 win at #10 Fishers

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
FISHERS – The day before Halloween – National Candy Corn Day – I went to a monsoon in Hamilton County and a football game broke out. Well, sort of.
Under the worst sideline conditions this sports journalist has ever seen, Class 5A top-ranked Carmel scored the game’s only touchdown on a 15-yard run by junior tailback Devin Brinson midway through the second quarter and overcame sideways rain and ridiculously gusty winds in downing No. 10 host Fishers, 7-0.
The Greyhounds punted nine times, had a punt blocked, threw for zero yards, endured three huge defensive penalties on Fishers’ final drive that reached the Carmel 13 with under a minute to play … and still won.
That’s because – like so many other teams this season – the host Tigers couldn’t put a big enough dent in the Carmel defense when it mattered.
Fishers failed to capitalize after junior defensive back Brian Sutton’s blocked punt early in the fourth quarter gave them a short field at the Carmel 35. After starting at their own 10 with 2:28 left to play, the Tigers ran for two first downs and gained two more on penalties to reach the red zone … only to see senior quarterback Alex Hines’ 4th-and-6 pass to junior tight end Dakota Slaughter batted away by sophomore inside linebacker Justin Todd.
It was a miserable evening, but that was especially true for the Fishers offense. Hines went just 3 of 20 passing for 31 yards, while the Tigers’ ground game averaged only 2.0 yards a carry (38 rushes for 77 yards) compared with Carmel’s relatively spectacular 3.3 average (41 rushes for 134 yards).
And all that came on state-of-the-art Field Turf, sports fans! Attempting to imagine the holy horror this contest would have become in mud would only serve to conjure up nightmares of epic proportion.
“It’s been a lot of wet Friday nights, but somehow we figure out a way to win,” said Carmel coach Mo Moriarity.
