BXC STATE FINALS: Preview

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor (with info provided by the IHSAA)
Two new individual champions are assured on Halloween as the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute plays host to the 64th IHSAA Boys Cross Country State Finals.
With seven runners from 24 teams plus 28 individual boys and 24 individual girls, there will be nearly 200 competitors that take to the 5,000-meter course in each race. The boys begin at 1 p.m. ET, with the girls to follow at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Carmel won its 11th state championship last year in coach Chuck Koeppen’s final year.
Last year’s individual winners – Sarah Higgens of Center Grove and Drew Shields of Fishers – both graduated, opening the door for a number of hopefuls.
Three of last year’s Top 10 boys finishers return, led by Futsum Zeinasellassie of North Central (Indianapolis). The sophomore finished as the runner-up in 2008 and appears to be a favorite this time around. He has won each of his three tournament races in dominating fashion, including the Carmel Semistate win by more than 20 seconds.
Junior James Martin of Carroll (Fort Wayne), last year’s third-place finisher, and Tyler Byrne, a North Harrison senior, also have taken the top spot in each of their postseason races.
David Osborn of Chesterton took the overall victory at the New Prairie Semistate last weekend and was one of five Trojan runners to finish in the Top 13, helping the school to its first semistate crown since 2001. Osborn finished 20th in last year’s state meet.
In other team competition last weekend, Columbus North won its first semistate since 2003 by dominating the field at Carmel. Five Bull Dogs finished in the Top 12, and its sixth-best was 19th. Terre Haute North, the host school this weekend, edged North Harrison by a single point (55-56) for its second consecutive semistate championship at Brown County. Concord topped the charts at New Haven, winning the school’s first semistate in boys cross country.

Two new individual champions are assured on Halloween as the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute plays host to the 29th IHSAA Girls Cross Country State Finals.
With seven runners from 24 teams plus 28 individual boys and 24 individual girls, there will be nearly 200 competitors that take to the 5,000-meter course in each race. The boys begin at 1 p.m. ET, with the girls to follow at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Four Top 10 girls finishers from 2008 are in Saturday’s field and will look to move up the chart this weekend. Lake Central’s Dana Payonk finished fourth at this meet last year and will look to cap her senior year with a state championship. She won the semistate race at New Prairie by more than 20 seconds.
Sophomore Sarah Bennett helped Carmel win its state-best 13th semistate title with her own individual victory. Teammate Renee Wellman, last year’s fifth-place finisher at state, placed third. Bennett finished 39th at state last season.
Brianna Johnson of Carroll (Fort Wayne), who rounded out last year’s Top 10, placed third at the New Haven Semistate, more than 14 seconds behind winner Ashley Erba of Warsaw. Boone Grove junior Jordan Chester finished eighth at New Prairie, the same finish she had in Terre Haute last October.
Freshman TaPring Goatee of Terre Haute North won the Brown County Semistate, helping the Patriots to their first team crown since 2005.
Crown Point, meanwhile, won its first girls semistate championship at New Prairie.

BSoc STATE FINALS: Preview

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor (with info provided by the IHSAA)
The 2008 boys state runner-up headlines the field for Saturday’s 16th Annual IHSAA Boys Soccer State Finals at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis. Boys semifinals are set for 10 a.m. ET, with a first-time winner being assured in the 6 p.m. ET championship match.
The fourth-ranked Zionsville boys team, which fell in a penalty kick shootout in last year’s state championship match, has battled its way back to this year’s finals in seeking its first state soccer title. The Eagles (18-3-1) have fended off three Top 20 teams during the tournament, including top-ranked Pike in the regional round and No. 5 Avon last Saturday.
They will meet No. 7 Lake Central (20-1-1) in one semifinal match, while No. 13 Homestead (17-4-1) and No. 14 Columbus North (18-2-4) clash in the other match.
Lake Central, a 2005 state finals participant that won at Zionsville, 2-1, on Sept. 25, comes in with the best record among the boys teams, having allowed just one goal over the last three matches after topping No. 12 Munster in the regional.
Like Zionsville, Homestead is making its second straight appearance in the Final Four and also fell to eventual champion Evansville Memorial in last season’s tournament. The Spartans topped No. 15 Fort Wayne South in the regional and No. 20 Warsaw in Tuesday’s postponed-by-weather semistate final.
Columbus North, advancing to state for the first time since 2001, bested two Top 10 teams in the semistate: No. 3 defending state champion Evansville Memorial and No. 8 Washington. Both Homestead and Columbus North have won 10 straight.

GSoc STATE FINALS: Preview

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor (with info provided by the IHSAA)
Both of last year’s girls state championship match participants headline the field Oct. 31 for the 16th Annual IHSAA Girls Soccer State Finals at Kuntz Memorial Stadium in Indianapolis. The girls semifinals begin at noon ET, with the championship contest at 8 p.m. ET.
The girls semifinals feature No. 2 defending state champion Evansville Memorial (21-2) facing No. 11 Fort Wayne Snider (16-3-3) and No. 4 South Bend St. Joseph’s (21-1-1) taking on No. 9 Indianapolis Cathedral (17-4-2).
Snider advanced to its second straight state finals following Tuesday night’s postponed-by-weather semistate win to set up a rematch of last year’s state title match won by Memorial, 2-0.
The Tigers appear primed to defend their title, topping three Top 20 opponents in their last three matches and allowing but a single goal in their last 13 outings.
Cathedral has earned its way to the finals for the second time in three seasons, having won it all in 2007. The Irish beat a pair of Top 20 teams during the tournament, including a 2-0 decision over No. 7 Zionsville for the semistate title. They have not surrendered a goal in tournament play thus far.
St. Joseph’s returns to state for the first time since its 2003 state runner-up season. The Indians have been tested in close matches by three ranked teams in tourney action, winning all three by a single goal.
Should Snider and Cathedral meet Saturday night, the two finished deadlocked at 2-2 in a meeting back on Aug. 29.

VB VIDEO: Warren Central wins first sectional title in 22 years

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
It is often pointed out that volleyball is a sport played by many but dominated by very few. The same select group of teams has ruled the game in Indiana for decades.
If someone succeeds in playing giant-****** at tourney time, it is therefore reason for serious celebration. If the giant they slay is defending Class 4A state champion Indianapolis Cathedral, well that is Christmas, the Fourth of July, and Cinco de Mayo all rolled into one.
That is why, after Warren Central did just that in the first round of Class 4A Sectional 10 play last week, coach Dan Hagist was glad his Warriors did not play again for four days. He wanted to refocus them on the job at hand.
Whatever he did worked. The Warriors plowed through two more opponents Oct. 25 and won the school’s first sectional title since 1987.
Warren Central is a large school used to high-profile athletic success. Still, the championship has been met with tremendous enthusiasm. On Monday, the players took their rightful place as temporary heroes among the student body, and Hagist fielded over 30 congratulatory emails from fellow coaches around the state.
By the time Hoosier Authority stopped by practice on Tuesday, the Warriors were back to work with a laser focus toward the regional on Halloween. It will certainly offer an opportunity for more giant-slaying.
Warren Central will open Regional 3 at Perry Meridian versus Avon, while two of the state’s traditional powers (and fellow members of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) – Carmel and third-ranked Center Grove – will vie in the other semifinal.
Hagist points to a simple formula for the success of his team, now 23-11 on the year. The Warriors have a bevy of back-line defenders that have bought into the notion that defense wins matches. The team performs the fundamentals like passing and serving with great efficiency.
Finally, they have a chemistry that makes the whole far larger than the sum of its parts.
Offensively, the Warriors rely on the power of senior middle hitter Rachel Wilkinson. It is worth noting that Wilkinson is the ONLY senior on the roster. Meanwhile, the offense goes through junior setter Sara Johnson.
(We spoke with the team’s two leaders and quickly found out they have more than a sectional title on their minds. Their comments are in the videos on this page!)
One more thing, Hagist and his charges are already aware that when the season begins next year, they can pick up the bull’s eye for the back of their uniforms at the equipment room with the rest of their gear.
When you are a young team and start knocking off the power programs, that comes with the territory. Indiana’s elite teams, you see, don’t like folks crashing their party. There will be plenty of schools standing in line to put the Warriors back in their place.
Somehow, I think this group is more than up to the challenge …

BXC CARMEL SEMISTATE: #1 Columbus North rolls to the title

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
CARMEL – Cool is good, cold is bad. That is the rule of thumb among cross country runners.
So, the chilly, blustery conditions Oct. 24 at the Carmel Semistate weren’t exactly conducive to great performances. You could not have told it, however, by the performance of top-ranked Columbus North. Once again, the Bull Dogs dominated the field in running away with the team title.
These Dogs run in a pack and seem impervious to all obstacles, be they natural or human. Columbus North placed five runners in the Top 12 of the team scoring en route to compiling just 44 points and overwhelming runner-up No. 8 Noblesville, which ended with 101. No. 2 host Carmel (131) edged out rival third-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) by one point for third, with No. 10 Zionsville (145) and No. 14 Hamilton Southeastern (152) also advancing to the state finals on Halloween.
The difference in time between the top Bull Dog runner and the fifth member of the team was a mere 25 seconds. Andrew Diehn led the assault, finishing fifth in the scoring and sixth overall in a time of 15:46.9.
Sensational North Central sophomore Futsum Zeinasellassi won the individual competition in a time of 15:16.5. That was more than 20 seconds ahead of second-place Scott Vicenzi of Brownsburg. Zeinasellassi’s effort led North Central to a fourth-place team finish.

GXC CARMEL SEMISTATE: #1 Carmel bests stellar field for crown

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
CARMEL – On a blustery day better fit for football than cross country Oct. 24, top-ranked host Carmel won a tough, four-way competition for the Carmel Semistate title as the Greyhounds bested No. 4 Noblesville, second-ranked Columbus North, and No. 3 Franklin Central for the crown.
All four teams ended with fewer than 100 points, with Carmel grabbing the title with a total of 58. That is a very close competition at the semistate level of the tournament. No. 16 Indianapolis Cathedral (167) and unranked Brownsburg (203) also advanced to the state finals on Halloween.
The Greyhounds’ effort was boosted by the individual winning performance of Sarah Bennett in 18:42. Teammate Renee Wellman finished third, just five seconds behind Bennett. That top-heavy performance offset both Noblesville (79) and Columbus North (82), which both placed three runners in the Top 15 in scoring.
Meanwhile, several of the state’s high-profile conferences had multiple teams that failed to advance.
In the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, there was Center Grove (eighth) and Warren Central (10th). In Conference Indiana, it was No. 9 Pike (ninth), No. 10 Lawrence Central (11th), and Southport (13th). In the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, it was No. 14 Westfield (seventh) and Avon (15th). And in the Mid-State Conference, there was Franklin (14th), Plainfield (16th), and Greenwood (19th).
