W Al Smith Classic: #1 host Mishawaka rolls past #4 Merrillville

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
Top-ranked Mishawaka suffered three individual setbacks but failed to disappoint as a team Dec. 29-30 in capturing the Cavemen’s fourth consecutive title at the loaded 32nd Annual Al Smith Classic.
Host Mishawaka totaled 254.5 points to outpoint runner-up No. 4 Merrillville (210.5) in the 32-team event, while No. 15 Penn took third with 164.5. No. 20 Bellmont (146) nosed out No. 19 Lawrence North by a point for fourth place, while Center Grove (132.5) finished sixth.
Every championship bout either had a pair of ranked wrestlers going at it or saw an upset of a ranked grappler by an unranked foe. Eleven of the finals’ 14 matchups featured headline-grabbing results:
103: Warsaw’s No. 3 Jarred Brooks scored a 10-5 upset of No. 2 Zac Stevens of Merrillville.
112: Top-ranked Paul Beck of Mishawaka barely got past Lake Central’s No. 4 Kyle Ayersman, 2-1.
119: No. 3 Brandon Nelsen of Lawrence North scored the only point in a 1-0 decision over No. 6 (at 125) Alex Gregory of Penn.
125: Merrillville’s No. 5 Anthony Napules blanked No. 8 Zack Thornton of Chesterton, 4-0.
130: No. 4 Nick Schrader of Mishawaka trailed 7-3 to Calumet’s No. 14 Mike Clark with a minute left before rallying for an 8-7 victory.
135: Jimtown’s unranked Jeremy Hill shocked No. 6 Matt Guerra of Mishawaka, 6-4.
145: Munster’s No. 3 Alex Surma shut out No. 9 (at 152) Dalton Sparks of Peru, 7-0.
160: No. 3 Anthony Quiroz of Chesterton narrowly held off No. 6 (at 152) Zack Corpe of Elkhart Memorial, 8-7.
189: Bellmont’s unranked Travis Belcher shocked No. 13 Nathan Fowler of Calumet, 5-2.
215: No. 2 Nate Cleveland of Lowell upset Mishawaka’s top-ranked Christian Lentz with a 4-2 decision, scoring a takedown just ahead of the final buzzer.
Hwt: Merrillville’s top-ranked James Travis held off No. 3 Travis Thomas of Mishawaka, 3-0.
Mishawaka crowned three champions on the day – Beck at 112, Schrader at 130, and No. 2 Ryan Stahl at 152 in a 7-1 decision over No. 14 Jimmy Larowe of East Noble. Coach Darrick Snyder’s Cavemen also boasted three runner-up finishers (Guerra at 135, Lentz at 215, and Thomas at heavyweight) as well as a pair of thirds (No. 9 Taylor Wisler at 125, No. 6 Richard Morin at 171).
That was significantly better than Merrillville, which finished with two champs (Napules at 125 and Travis at heavyweight), one second-place wrestler (Stevens at 103), and a third (No. 9 Adam Garcia at 112).
“We set our goal to wrestle well, and if we did we figured we’d win it,” Snyder told the South Bend Tribune. “But our goal all along is to peak at the end of the season, and we’re on our way toward that.”

W Spartan Classic: #9 Reitz conquers #11 Roncalli at Connersville

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
CONNERSVILLE – Ninth-ranked Evansville Reitz pulled away from a first-place tie with No. 11 Roncalli after Day 1 of the 32-team Spartan Classic to capture the overall and Class AAA championships Dec. 30 at the Spartan Bowl in Connersville.
The Panthers totaled 261.5 points for the title, with Roncalli at 236.5 and third-place No. 17 Indianapolis Cathedral scoring 227.5. North Central (Indianapolis) and South Dearborn tied for fourth with 173.5 points.
STAY TUNED FOR VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS!!!
Reitz had 12 of its 14 wrestlers pin down Top 8 finishes, including victories by No. 5 Bryan Kuhn at 112 and Blake Rueger at 135. Corey Voegel was runner-up at 145, while the Panthers collected third-place finishes at four weights – 103 (No. 14 Gideon VanHook in a loaded field that featured five ranked competitors), 119 (No. 11 Trevor Moody), 189 (Jeff Fentress), and heavyweight (Zach Wimpelberg).
Roncalli also crowned a pair of individual champions in fourth-ranked Josh Kieffer at 119 and fourth-ranked Justin Kieffer at 125. Justin Kieffer also was named the Ed Collier Most Valuable Wrestler.
A trio of other schools pulled the double-winner trick, too.
Union County’s pair of defending state champions came out on top at 103 (No. 1-ranked Cody Phillips) and 189 (Michael Duckworth, who’s currently ranked first at 171 and also won the award for most pins). Cathedral won at 160 (No. 2 Tyler Willis) and heavyweight (unranked Jake Buchanan). And South Dearborn took titles at 130 (No. 6 Tyler Clark) and 152 (No. 15 Nick Manning).
Team scores
1. #9 Evansville Reitz 261.5 (Class AAA champion)
2. #11 Roncalli 236.5 (Class AA champion)
3. #17 Indianapolis Cathedral 227.5
4. North Central (Indianapolis) 173.5
4. South Dearborn 173.5
6. Carroll (Fort Wayne) 149.5
7. Pendleton Heights 139
8. Connersville 119.5
9. Union County 118 (Class A champion)
10. Lebanon 116
The individual results (complete with a class-by-class summary from a fellow calls himself “Indiana Wrestlin”), courtesy of IndianaMat.com:
103
1. #1 Cody Phillips, Union County
2. #8 Mike Venezia, Indianapolis Cathedral
3. #14 Gideon VanHook, Evansville Reitz
4. #7 Josh Ferrell, Greenfield-Central
5. #16 Tom Gettinger, Connersville
6. Zach Wise, Pendleton Heights
7. Conner Aldridge, Evansville North
8. Devin Hubbard, Fort Wayne Snider
IW: By far the most competitive and entertaining weight as six wrestlers are Conseco-caliber. Phillips (the defending 103 state champ) was very dominant. The match was close with Venezia in the finals through two periods, but Phillips unleashed his strength and roughneck style on Venezia, putting him on his back twice for the major decision and almost a fall. Venezia had a real nice tournament, beating a good Connersville kid, Gettinger, and taking a tight battle with Greenfield’s Farrell. Both Wise from Pendleton Heights and VanHook from Reitz were also impressive.
112
1. #5 Bryan Kuhn, Evansville Reitz
2. #7 Brian Harvey, Indianapolis Cathedral
3. #8 Mason Todd, Pendleton Heights
4. Aaron Davis, Roncalli
5. Kieno Scott, North Central (Indianapolis)
6. Cody House, Connersville
7. Garth Simpson, Rochester
8. David Noe, Richmond
IW: Brian Harvey (Cathedral) vs. Bryan Kuhn (Reitz) in the finals could have gone either way. Kuhn stole a couple quick back points on a scramble, and it was the difference-maker in an 8-5 decision. Harvey beats Mason Todd, 5-3, in the quarters, and pins Davis from Roncalli with little fanfare in the semis.
119
1. #4 Josh Kieffer, Roncalli
2. Alex Troy, Fort Wayne Snider
3. #11 Trevor Moody, Evansville Reitz
4. #14 Josh Julien, Lebanon
5. Jacob McCord, South Dearborn
6. Chase Woodall, Connersville
7. Tyler Burrellson, Triton Central
8. Brian Philbert, Pendleton Heights
IW: Josh Kieffer was in a class of his own, beating Troy handily in the finals. Troy vs. Moody in the semis was a nail-biter.
125
1. #4 Justin Kieffer, Roncalli
2. #3 (at 130) Ethan Raley, Indian Creek
3. Drew Sulawske, Evansville North
4. Celin Campbell, Lebanon
5. Zach Bottomley, Connersville
6. Beckes, Evansville Reitz
7. Justin Eshelman, Pendleton Heights
8. Jared Huff, Milan
IW: Justin Kieffer destroys Raley (the 2008 state champ at 103), up 10-0 when he pins him. Kieffer was superior on his feet and has a dirty double leg.
130
1. #6 Tyler Clark, South Dearborn
2. #10 John Stringfield, Indianapolis Cathedral
3. #12 Joe Kieffer, Roncalli
4. Poynter, DeKalb
5. Derek Dowdy, Evansville Reitz
6. Chance Miller, Triton Central
7. Mikey Sartain, Hagerstown
8. Nick Huff, Milan
IW: Clark was pretty darn good, beating Stringfield in the finals pretty handily.
135
1. Blake Rueger, Evansville Reitz
2. Andrew Konrath, Mount Vernon (Posey)
3. Smith, North Central (Indianapolis)
4. Schroder, Rochester
5. Sam Oskins, Indianapolis Cathedral
6. Brooks Manning, Greenfield-Central
7. Goss, Roncalli
8. Jake McCoy, Franklin County
IW: I thought this weight was pretty average. Rueger looked good beating up on Konrath by a major, having Konrath on his back to end it.
140
1. #9 Bailey Kesterman, Triton Central
2. Wade Thiel, Fort Wayne North
3. Tiandre Edwards, North Central (Indianapolis)
4. Gino Gillum, Indianapolis Cathedral
5. Jeff Clark, Carroll (Fort Wayne)
6. Justin Enright, Centerville
7. Travis Gaff, DeKalb
8. Ben Kane, Roncalli
IW: Theil vs. Gillum in the semi was heart-stopping, high-scoring action! Edwards wrestles all the way back from a second-round loss to Kesterman to take third.
145
1. #8 Reece Lefever, Carroll (Fort Wayne)
2. Corey Voegel, Evansville Reitz
3. Mason Gesell, Union County
4. #11 Logun Taylor, Western
5. Logan Zielinski, Roncalli
6. Braydon Alley, Hamilton Heights
7. Shane Steele, Mount Vernon (Posey)
8. Zeth O’Neal, Milan
IW: Gessell vs. Voegel in the quarters could have been the final – it was an 18-16 type of match in Voegel’s favor. Shoulda, woulda, coulda, but I thought third-place Gessell could have beaten Lefever. Weight was not the strongest.
152
1. #15 Nick Manning, South Dearborn
2. Jon Timmerman, Carroll (Fort Wayne)
3. #11 Austin Neighberger, Indianapolis Cathedral
4. Blake Marshall, Mount Vernon (Posey)
5. Tyler Boyle, Evansville Reitz
6. Cody Day, Connersville
7. Aaron Mason, DeKalb
8. Kevin Fox, Richmond
IW: Manning manhandles Timmerman in the final by a technical fall, 17-2. Neibarger takes third handily, losing a tough match to Timmerman in the semis.
160
1. #2 Tyler Willis, Indianapolis Cathedral
2. Joe Ardizzone, Roncalli
3. Conner Lefever, Carroll (Fort Wayne)
4. Cody Becker, Northeastern
5. Nick Harrell, South Dearborn
6. Cole Kelly, North Central (Indianapolis)
7. Schneider, Evansville Reitz
8. Stephen Blanford, Mount Vernon (Posey)
IW: Willis dominated with a tech fall in the finals over Ardizonne. The next-best kid was Lefever.
171
1. #13 Trey Reese, Indian Creek
2. #10 Mike Smith, North Central (Indianapolis)
3. Jake Bartley, Roncalli
4. Kamaryn Wright, Lebanon
5. Dakota Gruell, Greenfield-Central
6. Logan Raydole, Carroll (Fort Wayne)
7. Jake Stilwell, Pendleton Heights
8. Tyler Byall, Fort Wayne North
IW: I was surprised to not see Smith win this. Reese is the real deal, though.
189
1. #1 (at 171) Michael Duckworth, Union County
2. Ian Early, Greenfield-Central
3. Jeff Fentress, Evansville Reitz
4. Kevin Wilger, South Dearborn
5. Bronc Fletcher, Centerville
6. Stephen Hackl, Indianapolis Cathedral
7. Damon Albertson, Roncalli
8. Chance Blackwell, Bedford North Lawrence
IW: Duckworth (the defending 171 state champ and the 2008 runner-up at 160), with little competition.
215
1. Kyle Smitherman, Pendleton Heights
2. #10 Ron Forman, South Dearborn
3. Gage Andis, Carroll (Fort Wayne)
4. Kevin Gaugham, North Central (Indianapolis)
5. Kyle Barrett, Connersville
6. Jake Tucker, Roncalli
7. Brandon Kemp, Evansville Reitz
8. Caleb Jones, Talawanda (OH)
IW: Another very down weight class.
Hwt
1. Jake Buchanan, Indianapolis Cathedral
2. Ben Jackson, Milan
3. Zach Wimpleberg, Evansville Reitz
4. #7 Willie Henson, North Central (Indianapolis)
5. Jessey Boley, Lebanon
6. #14 Jake Stevenson, Indian Creek
7. Sean McPike, Bedford North Lawrence
8. Teddy O’Connell, Mount Vernon (Posey)
IW: Buchanan wins this one pretty easy.

BB Clinton Central Inv.: State’s longest-running holiday tourney turns 50

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

MICHIGANTOWN – This year, they are not among Indiana’s elite basketball teams. In some years, they have been state championship-quality teams.
Regardless of the scenario, four teams have gathered each season for 50 years at Clinton Central High School over the Christmas holiday to battle for the championship of the Clinton Central Invitational. For the past 28 years, it has been the same four squads.
The host Bulldogs, county rival Clinton Prairie, Tri-Central, and Carroll (Flora) compete each year in the longest-running holiday tourney in the Hoosier state.
Hoosier Authority traveled to the home of the Bulldogs Dec. 29 to witness the first night of this annual bloodletting. We saw a full house and rabid support for four teams, three of which have losing records.
We also saw two intense basketball games and at least one team come of age.
The evening’s first contest saw Tri-Central under first-year coach Kyle Zahn battle Carroll, one of the state’s tallest teams. It was a contest that featured a little of everything, including both excellent and incredibly frustrating play.
The two squads battled through a well-played and even first half that saw Tri-Central take a 28-26 lead into intermission. The Trojans did an excellent job of controlling Carroll’s 6’11” center, Riley Johnson, while the Cougars responded with long-range bombing from a trio of guards.
The third quarter was a nightmare that set up the exciting finish. Tri-Central completely controlled play in the period, holding the suddenly frigid Cougars scoreless for more than four minutes midway through the stanza.
There was only one problem. During that stretch, Tri-Central committed seven turnovers and missed countless opportunities to put a stranglehold on the contest. Instead, the Trojans managed only a 6-0 run that gave them a 38-31 margin.
The lead disappeared in a split second.
Carroll finally connected on a 3-point field goal, and Tri-Central was whistled for a foul off the ball during the shot. The ensuing one-and-one gave Carroll a five-point play. It cut the margin to two points, and the battle was on.
The fourth period started with the Trojans still clinging to the same two-point lead they had enjoyed at halftime. The final eight minutes were a possession-by -possession battle that saw the contest tied at 59 with 1:41 remaining.
It was at that point the young Tri-Central squad took a huge step in maturity. Junior Brock Robertson made a steal on the next Carroll trip down the floor and streaked to the other end for the go-ahead score. That was followed by a stop and a bucket from junior Brock Tew to stretch the lead to four.
In all, Tri-Central outscored the Cougars 8-5 down the stretch to garner the 58-55 victory. As a young team coming off two disappointing seasons, it was a mammoth step in learning how to win for the Trojans (3-5). For Carroll (3-3), it was a frustrating loss.
The second contest featured the host Clinton Central Bulldogs and county foe Clinton Prairie. Anybody familiar with Clinton County knows that is all that is needed for civil war.
Both teams have struggled this season. Central entered the game just 1-3, while Prairie had yet to taste victory in seven outings. The first half was, quite frankly, an example of why the squads have suffered those fates.
Central controlled play in a ragged (to say the least) two quarters that saw Prairie miss countless opportunities at point-blank range. The score at intermission was a paltry 16-12 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The third quarter changed all of that. The Gophers, who had struggled so mightily to score in the first half, put 20 points on the board in the first four minutes. The blast took them from four down to a 10-point lead.
They were never seriously threatened down the stretch in a 55-41 triumph.
Tri-Central and Clinton Prairie advance to battle for the championship on the 30th. Anyone who frequently visits Hoosier Authority knows we are big on tradition. This tourney is another of the hidden gems our state features almost every day during the school year.
The records didn’t matter. The power of the teams didn’t matter. At Christmas time, only one thing matters to these four communities – and it has been that way for 50 years.
CLINTON CENTRAL INVITATIONAL
Day 1
Tri-Central 58, Carroll (Flora) 55
Clinton Prairie 55, Clinton Central 41
Day 2 (Dec. 30)
Carroll (Flora) vs. Clinton Central, 6:30p (consolation)
Tri-Central vs. Clinton Prairie, 8:15p (championship)

GBB Hall of Fame: 3A #2 Rushville thumps 4A #2 Mooresville, 69-63

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

NEW CASTLE – With a 70-66 home-court loss to Greenwood having ruined its perfect season two weeks earlier, Class 3A second-ranked Rushville used that wake-up call Dec. 29 to turn the same trick on 4A No. 2 Mooresville in a 69-63 upset at the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic.

The Lions (12-1), a nine-point underdog to previously unbeaten Mooresville according to the Sagarin power ratings, continued to rule New Castle Fieldhouse Fieldhouse – the self-proclaimed largest and finest high school fieldhouse in the world – by downing 4A Jay County, 48-35, in the championship game of the 16th annual girls basketball event.

Following a cold-shooting opening semifinal won 35-33 in double overtime by Jay County over Plainfield, the second semi sizzled with its up-tempo action and stellar play as Rushville and Mooresville combined to score more point in the game’s first five minutes than did the previous duo in the entire first half.

After Mooresville senior forward Aerial Clark’s bucket tied the game at 21 early in the second quarter, Rushville blitzed out on a 12-3 run that out the Lions ahead to stay at 33-24. That two-minute outburst coincided with 6’2” senior center Maegan Callaway’s trip to the bench after picking up her second foul at the 6:55 mark.

The state’s leading shot blocker at 4.1 per game, Callaway would return with a vengeance in the third quarter with four blocks in that period alone. But Rushville did a decent job of keeping the Valparaiso recruit from taking the game over – Callaway finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to go along with those four blocks – in riding its three-headed offensive monster of Kaleigh Andrews, Shelbie Justice, and Morgan Herbert.

Andrews, a 5’8” senior, scored a game-high 20 points, hitting 8 of 13 from the field and going 2 of 2 on both free throws and 3-pointers. Justice, a 5’9” junior, finished with 19 points and kept the Lions plugging away with a 9-of-12 effort from the free throw line. Then there was Herbert, a 5’6” senior with 15 points who was nearly perfect from the floor in going 5 of 6 on field goals, hitting her only three attempt, and knocking down all four free throws.

Coach Mart Hurt’s Mooresville team (13-1) was further hindered by foul trouble from 5’8” junior guard Jama Sharp, who fouled out with 21.8 seconds left following a 4-of-14 shooting effort and 14 points. The Quakers were led by the 18 points of 5’5” senior guard Sierra Chabra.

In stark contrast, Jay County and Plainfield encapsulated a wickedly poor-shooting affair in the opener by combining for zero points in the game’s first overtime session. Jay County opened the contest by going just 1 of 9 from the field in the first quarter, while Plainfield finished the game at 24 percent (8 of 33).

After a 3-pointer from 5’8” junior Michelle McGary gave Plainfield a 21-15 lead with 5:19 to play in the third quarter, Jay County responded with buckets on its next four possessions in moving out on a 10-0 run.

But Plainfield plowed back with a 9-0 spurt as Jay County went scoreless for nine minutes before rallying with a layin by 5’11” sophomore Mariah Hornaday and a three from 5’6” classmate Kassi Hemmelgarn in the last minute to tie the game at 30 at the end of regulation.

After a hold-the-ball session resulted in the 0-0 first extra session, Plainfield went up 33-30 on three free throws from 5’11” junior Sarah Janssen – the game’s only double-digit scorer with 13 points. But 5’6” junior Erin Hunt tied it on a 3-pointer at :40.1. Before 5’8” sophomore Maria Murphy hit both ends of the bonus with 8.9 seconds to play for the win.

In the evening clashes …

Chabra once again led Mooresville with 18 points while Callaway added 16 in a 51-46 consolation win over neighboring Mid-State Conference rival Plainfield. The Pioneers were forced to rally after trailing 35-32 after three quarters.

Herbert and 5’10” senior Alexa Bess each tallied 13 points and Justice chipped in 12 for Rushville in the Lions’ 48-35 championship win over Jay County. The title game was all but won at the free throw line, where Rushville finished 13 of 19 while Jay County went just 2 of 4.

The all-tournament team:

Morgan Herbert, Rushville (also most valuable player)
Shelbie Justice, Rushville
Kaleigh Andrews, Rushville

GBB Twin Lakes Tourney: No bricks in 2A #6 Taylor’s Wall

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

MONTICELLO – If I told you that Taylor’s Shelby Wall scored 28 points in the Titans’ first-round 61-57 victory over Lebanon at the Twin Lakes Invitational, you would think she had a good game. What if I told you she scored 23 of those in SIX AND A HALF MINUTES?!?

Wall exploded, and Class 2A No. 6 Taylor came roaring back from extinction with a fourth-quarter rally for the ages Dec. 28.

Lebanon dominated play in this game from the opening whistle. The Tigers did a wonderful job of preventing Wall from shooting the ball, and the rest of the Titans were ice cold from the field.

Lebanon cruised to a 12-7 lead after one quarter and expanded that to 25-18 at halftime. When the Tigers opened the third quarter with a 13-5 run, the upset looked likely. Eventually, the lead stretched to 43-23, and that upset looked certain.

It was at that point, with 1:30 left in the third quarter, that Wall went to the charity stripe and dropped two free throws. They were the first points the Indiana All-Star candidate had scored since completing a three-point play on the game’s opening possession.

It seemed innocent enough, but it wasn’t. Wall scored five more points in the remaining 90 seconds, and at the end of three periods Lebanon led 47-30.

Wall quickly scored to start the fourth stanza. Taylor scored again. Then Wall canned a long 3-pointer, then another, and then free throws.

The avalanche had begun. Taylor went on a 15-0 run to start the period, and it was suddenly 49-45 with still more than four minutes remaining.

Lebanon tried to stop the bleeding. The Tigers scored on two consecutive trips to stretch the lead back to 52-45.

It was of no consequence. By this point, Wall smelled blood in the water, and the rest of the Titans were circling. She hit a trey to cut the lead back to four, another one two possessions later to cut the margin to 55-52, and another on the next trip to tie the contest at 55.

There were still nearly three minutes to play. Wall had scored 23 points in a 32-8 Taylor run. Defense and strong free throw shooting down the stretch did the rest for the Titans.
