GBB Twin Lakes Tourney: 3A #6 Ev. Memorial thumps 1A #6 Randolph Southern

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

MONTICELLO – It wasn’t the size of the school that was the difference Dec. 28 in Class 3A No. 6 Evansville Memorial’s 54-44 victory over 1A No. 8 Randolph Southern in the first round of the Twin Lakes Invitational. It was the size in the school, specifically Memorial’s talented post duo of Annie Hackert and Mallory Ladd.

The pair combined for 38 points and an intimidating defensive presence to lead the Tigers to a 54-44 triumph.

Defeating Randolph Southern means stopping star junior Stephanie Lord and all of the havoc she can create. Memorial accomplished half of that task. Lord scored a team-high 19 points, but she was unable to break down the Memorial defense to open up her mates.

Repeatedly, Lord beat the perimeter defenders only to find Hackert and Ladd waiting in the paint. She tried time and again to dump the ball to her post players, but it seldom reached its destination as Ladd and Hackert intercepted countless passes and blocked nearly double-digit shots.

Memorial’s dominance in the post began immediately at the opening whistle. It led the southern visitors to a 22-12 lead at the end of one quarter. The Rebels adjusted well and actually controlled play in the second period, but at half’s end they had nothing to show for their strong play.

Memorial finished the half strongly and expanded the lead at intermission to 12, 38-26.

The second half saw both teams tighten the defensive screws. Memorial outscored Randolph Southern just 7-5 in a rather sloppy third quarter. Nonetheless, the 45-31 lead the Tigers carried into the fourth was more than enough to hold off the determined Rebels.

Ladd led all scorers in the game with 24 points, while Hackert added 14 markers. The triumph sends Memorial into the second round Dec. 30 versus Logansport.

BSw RANKINGS: Carmel noses past Munster as new No. 1

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
The Indiana High School Swim Coaches’ Association has released its fourth poll for the 2009-10 boys swimming season, and the news this week is the surge of Carmel from third to knock previous leader Munster from the top of the heap.
The Greyhounds total 228 points in this week’s poll, one point more than Munster. Chesterton drops from second to third, with the next five schools (Hamilton Southeastern, Castle, Northridge, Bloomington South, and Homestead) remaining unchanged. Finally, Fishers swaps spots with Noblesville in going from 10th to ninth.
Rankings are based on a theoretical scoring system from a 16-place meet using the times/scores of the returning Top 18 individuals from sectionals and state finals as well as the best regular-season times of the 2009-10 season.
Teams are listed by ranking followed by school and vote total. The IHSSCA’s Top 20 from Dec. 28:

GBB Frankfort Tourney: 2A #2 Winchester thumps Northwestern, 53-37

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
FRANKFORT – For most of the evening Dec. 26, it looked like the Northwestern Tigers had spent themselves during their first-round upset of the host Hot Dogs in the Frankfort Holiday Tournament. Considering their opponent was Class 2A second-ranked Winchester, that was not a good thing.
The Golden Falcons spent three quarters building a mammoth 16-point lead before finishing off Northwester, 53-37, in the championship. Winchester finishes the 2009 portion of its schedule at 12-0.
Winchester’s dominance had not been the result of a surge at any time. Rather, the Falcons and star post player Sarah Hamm had steadily controlled play from the outset as Winchester led by seven at the end of one quarter and nine at the half.
A 7-0 spurt at the start of the third quarter took the lead to 16, and it remained there at the end of the stanza. There was little reason to believe the fourth quarter held anything but a lot of bench time for both squads.
That is why they say appearances can be deceiving. The Tigers began the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run that quickly grew to 14-6. Suddenly, the lead was just eight, 45-37, with a little less than three minutes to play.
Northwestern (7-5) had been quicker and more sound throughout the final quarter, and there was reason to believe the Tigers might pull off the miraculous comeback.
Hamm saw to it that would not happen. The Butler-bound 6’3” senior scored the next four points for Winchester, and the Golden Falcons closed the game on an 8-0 run to register the victory.
Hamm finished the evening with a game-high 19 points for Winchester, which next plays in the Randolph County Tournament Jan. 6-9 at Randolph Southern. Northwestern, which next competes in the Howard County Tournament Jan. 7-9 at Taylor, was led by 10 points from both junior Rachel Lowden and sophomore Kylie Ballard.
Northwestern had reached the final by surprising host Frankfort, rallying in the second half for a 45-41 victory. Winchester had no need of a rally in the morning session in completely dismantled North White, 64-13.
Frankfort Tournament
Semifinals
Northwestern 45, Frankfort 41
Winchester 64, North White 13
North White at Frankfort (third place)

BB Wabash Valley: Owen Valley stops 1A #11 Turkey Run, 62-56

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

TERRE HAUTE – Sometimes you can do everything right, and the results still turn out bad. That was the story Dec. 26 for highly regarded Class A Turkey Run in the first round of the Wabash Valley Pizza Hut Classic.

The 11th-ranked Warriors entered their contest with 3A Owen Valley knowing they needed to control tempo and shut off the post game of the much-bigger Patriots. They did an excellent job of both. What they didn’t figure on was solid perimeter shooting from the Patriots, nor the handful of opportunities they would squander themselves down the stretch.

The result was a 62-56 Owen Valley victory.

It took very little time for Turkey Run to establish the slower tempo it wanted. The Warriors opened in a compacted zone that successfully kept Owen Valley out of the paint and completely eliminated quick shots for the Patriots.

The two teams jousted to a 12-11 Owen Valley advantage after one quarter.

The opening minutes of the second period brought one of the two key stretches in the game. Owen Valley heated up from beyond the 3-point arc, something the scouting report said was unlikely. The three barrage was enough to build a 27-17 lead midway through the quarter and put Turkey Run on the ropes.

But the Warriors responded with a five-point burst to claw back into the game. Owen Valley, not to be outdone, came back with seven in a row, and once again the Warriors were on the ropes.

Coach Joey Hart’s crew ended the half on a six-point run to narrow Owen Valley’s advantage to 34-28.

The third quarter had to be frustrating for both coaches. Owen Valley continued to shoot well and put 16 points on the board in the stanza. Meanwhile, Turkey Run seemed to become the quicker of the two teams and responded with the same total.

The quarter ended as it had begun, with Owen Valley clinging to a six point lead at 50-44.

The Warriors had two opportunities in the final minute to close within four but could not capitalize. It was the start of an agonizing trend.

Turkey Run stepped up the defensive intensity at the start of the fourth quarter, and Owen Valley began to struggle mightily. The Patriots scored just four points in the first six-and-a-half minutes of the final period.

Despite that futility, however, the Warriors could not make a run. With a full dozen chances to cut the lead to fewer than six points during that stretch, Turkey Run failed each and every time.

Finally, with 1:24 left to play, the Warriors’ Jon Sowers hit a 3-pointer from the corner AND drew a foul. The four-point play drew Turkey Run within two at 56-54.

Ironically, the post game of the taller Patriots – which had been so successfully stymied throughout the contest – came to the rescue. Owen Valley responded with two buckets in the lane to stave off the late rally.

The victory improved Owen Valley, which was paced by 6’7” Cody Vest’s 19 points, to 3-4 on the season. Turkey Run (5-2) was led in scoring by Jake Weaver’s game-high 21 points.

The Warriors’ loss was the first in what proved to be a long day for Wabash River Conference teams. Riverton Parke fell to West Vigo, 63-44, with nearly 30 turnovers the Panthers’ undoing. Later in the day, Rockville fell to one of the tourney favorites, Marshall (IL), 59-39.

Both teams will return to action Monday as Owen Valley battles West Vigo (5-3) at 2:30 p.m. ET and Turkey Run tackles winless Riverton Parke at 11:30.

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
As we reach the halfway point of the 2009-10 Indiana high school girls basketball season – and needing some quality Christmas weekend filler since they ain’t nothin’ goin’ on till Monday – we thought it a good time to take a peek at the sectional slate as broken down by Sagarin power numbering (through Dec. 19), courtesy of John Harrell’s high school basketball website.
Sectionals are scheduled for Tuesday Feb. 9; Wednesday, Feb. 10; Friday, Feb. 12; and Saturday, Feb. 13. To the girls ratings!

Byrne Notice: Final journal entry reflects on Foot Locker Nationals

Following the 2009 cross country season, we did a well-received feature on HoosierAuthority.com about the cross at North Harrison High School. The leading runner on that squad is a young man named Tyler Byrne.

Since our piece, North Harrison runners competed in the NXN Midwest Championships in Terre Haute, and Tyler finished second Nov. 15 in a record-breaking performance – 15:14, just seven seconds behind winner Zach Wills of the Mason XC Club. Tyler thus qualified to travel to Portland for the Nike Nationals and the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego.

Hoosier Authority asked the Cougar senior if he would supply us with a journal of his experiences during this postseason run. Following is the third and final installment of that journal …
Tyler finishes a disappointing 19th at Nike Nationals …
With both the Nike and Foot Locker Nationals over, I must say that both were definitely great experiences. Meeting all of the runners from across the country was very neat, and I made many new friends.
Going into the Nike race, I had wanted to get out and get a really good start. I knew it would become crowded very quickly on the rather narrow course with around 200 runners participating. Unfortunately, I did not have as good of a start as I was hoping and got stuck behind a fairly large pack of runners.
From that point I just wanted to stay relaxed and surge on the sections of the course that I would be able to pass people on better. I kept advancing my way up in the race, but it proved to be very difficult to make up the kind of ground that I needed to. On the course, there were hay bales and the man-made whoop-dee-doos – which did take some energy from my legs – but they were a neat addition to have in a race.
Coming across the line at Nike, I had finished in 19th place. This was not nearly what I was hoping for, and I was disappointed in how I ran, so I then looked ahead to the Foot Locker Nationals that were only a week ahead.
During the week of Foot Locker, I ran shorter runs for the most part.
Monday, I did a five-mile run at a comfortable pace, but faster than normal. After finishing a mile warm-up, I began the five-mile run starting around a 6:30 pace and progressively got faster with my final mile right at 5:50. With an easier run on Tuesday and coming back with a speed workout on Wednesday that consisted of an 800 and six 400s, I was feeling really good and ready for the race to be here.
… but comes back with a vengeance in San Diego for the Foot Locker Nationals
My plane left early the next morning, and after a long day of flying I finally arrived in San Diego, California. As soon as I stepped outside, the first thing that hit me was the obvious temperature change. I was still in the mindset of it being cold since there were snow flurries when I left from the airport in Louisville, but it was a change that I welcomed and was not the least bit disappointed to see.
Once I got to the hotel and settled in, I went for an easy run with some of the guys I already knew. We headed off and ran to a nearby track. Running in actual running shorts and a T-shirt was very nice instead of being geared up in pants, a jacket, and hat and gloves.
The next day, after grabbing some breakfast, we loaded the buses to the course. Once there, I instantly liked the course. It had great footing and looked to be challenging with the hill in it that we would hit twice during the race.
Race Day came quick the next day, but I was looking forward to it. We got to the course and I could just feel the running atmosphere all around. I started to go over my game plan in my head again and again. I was not going to get stuck behind the pack this time, and I knew that would be key for me to do well.
I wanted to get out and just hold the pace as long as I could, then really try and have a good kick at the end.
(For video coverage of the Dec. 12 race, plus pictures via the Photos link, click here!! And check out the gallery for pictures from Ryan’s mother!)
Stepping up to the line for the race, it began to rain fairly hard. But I did not mind it in the least bit, and I actually kind of welcomed it since this season for me it was rare to run on a dry course, anyway.
The loud cannon went off, and I got myself in good position. I was not in the very front, but back just a little. Being back a little was not bad, though, because even coming through the half-mile mark, there was a pack of 40 boys – everyone in the race. From that point, I just tried to stay relaxed and not drop off the pace.
Coming through the first mile, I was still feeling really good. I kept up the intensity for the next mile, then when I hit the two-mile mark right around 10 minutes even, I knew it was time to start working on closing the gaps between runners and advancing myself further up.
Right beside me was Chris Walden from Carmel High School in Indiana (click here for Chris’ personal page on the Foot Locker site … and click here for Tyler’s!). We were both working and driving together to keep advancing our way up. He was pushing me, and I believe I was pushing him to really keep on going.
We both knew that what we were representing was not just ourselves, but also the state of Indiana. This brought me motivation and kept me working hard because I was determined to cross that line knowing I had given it my very best.
With 600 meters left in the race, I really began to start driving. There were several kids that were definitely within striking distance for me to catch before the finish, and I wanted to make sure I made them work for each and every place.
There was 400 meters to go, and I told myself this is it, your last 400 meters in your last high school cross country race. That was more than enough to get me going, and I gave it absolutely everything I had to get to the finish line as fast as my little skinny legs could take me.
I crossed the finish line in seventh in 15:34 and instantly felt great. (Carmel’s Walden took 11th in 15:38). I knew I had finished well, and that I could not have run any faster on that day.
There were no regrets about the race running through my head, just the satisfaction of being done and wrapping up my season on a high note.

BB Zionsville Tourney: Carroll (FW) upsets 4A #3 Zionsville, 47-42

ZIONSVILLE – Shane Merryman scored a team-high 16 points Dec. 23 in the championship game of the annual Zionsville Tournament, lifting Carroll (Fort Wayne) to a 47-42 upset victory over a suddenly reeling 4A No. 7 host Zionsville.
CHECK THE GALLERY FOR ACTION PHOTOS FROM RYAN MANERS | RUSTED ROOF PHOTOGRAPHY!!
The loss concluded a disappointing week for Zionsville (7-2), which had risen all the way to third in last week’s coaches’ poll after a 6-0 start. But the Eagles dropped a 57-56 Hoosier Crossroads Conference decision Dec. 18 at then-4A No. 16 Hamilton Southeastern before needing overtime to defeat 4A No. 18 South Bend Washington, 74-71, earlier Wednesday to advance to the championship game.

Carroll (5-2), which defeated Franklin Central 32-21 in an **** other semifinal, limited Zionsville to just one double-digit scorer as Jack Isenbarger led everyone with 18 points. But the Eagles managed only 23 points through three quarters and could not take advantage of shoddy 12-of-23 free throw shooting by Carroll.
In the consolation game, Franklin Central beat South Bend Washington, 53-40, behind John Goodlow’s 17 points. Franklin Central, a 4A Final Four loser last year to eventual state champion Bloomington South, now stands 5-4 following the 2009-10 loss of its three main starters: Patrick Bade (Purdue), Casey Coons (Taylor), and Jordan Weidner (transferred to Danville).
In an earlier semifinal, Isenbarger again led everyone with 21 points as Zionsville squandered a six-point lead starting the fourth quarter before bouncing back with 12 points in the OT session to down South Bend Washington (5-2).
Merryman had 12 points in the Chargers’ 11-point semifinal win over Franklin Central.
