BB: 4A #1 Bloom. South runs streak to 33 with 67-53 win at 4A #13 CG

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
GREENWOOD – Class 4A No. 13 host Center Grove jumped out to a quick 17-6 lead in a battle of 6-0 schools Dec. 22, but top-ranked defending 4A state champion Bloomington South failed to panic in extending its winning streak to 33 games with a 67-53 win.
HO, HO, HO … CHECK OUT THE PIX AND VIDEO!!
The Panthers rebounded from the early Center Grove run that climaxed at the 2:35 mark of the first quarter. Bloomington South limited the Trojans to just one basket over the next nine and a half minutes in bursting back with a 29-7 run before a falling-down three-point play by junior Jonny Marlin (a game-high 23 points) that made the halftime score 35-27 in favor of Bloomington South.
The win was the 52nd in their last 54 games for the Panthers, a perfect 26-0 in capturing the school’s first state championship last year over Fort Wayne Snider and 19-2 two years ago in another stellar season that ended with a shocking 33-30 sectional-opening loss to East Central.
Six-foot-nine senior center Erik Fromm, a Butler recruit, tied with 5’11” junior guard Dee Davis for team scoring honors with 17 points. Matt Carlino, a 6’3” junior guard transfer this year from Arizona and an Indiana University signee, added 12 points and seven rebounds, tying Fromm for game-high honors on the boards.
Fromm also added two blocked shots, while Davis shot 75 percent (6 of 8) from the field and 80 percent (4 of 5) from the foul line. Six-three junior Joey Forney had 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting for the Panthers, who next travel Dec. 30 to 4A No. 9 Carmel (4-1).
Marlin, a 5’10” jitterbug of a guard, was 8 of 14 from the floor and a perfect 7 of 7 from the stripe while adding five assists and three steals for Center Grove, which next will travel just down the road a piece Dec. 29 for a game against Greenwood (2-3). Six-six junior forward Andrew Smeathers had 15 points for CG, while 6-foot senior guard J.T. Barton scored 11 before fouling out midway through the fourth period.

BB: 4A #20 Noblesville knocks off unbeaten 4A #10 Kokomo, 52-46

By Travis Miller
Contributing Writer
NOBLESVILLE – Defense was the name of the game Dec. 22 when Class 4A No. 20 Noblesville hosted 4A No. 10 Kokomo at The Mill.
The visiting Wildkats came in averaging 71.6 points per contest, good for 24th in the state, and had scored better than 64 points in every game on their way to a 5-0 start. But the Millers held them to a season low by allowing only two points in the second quarter and limiting the Kats to 33-percent first-half shooting in a 52-46 upset win.
Noblesville (6-1), which has now wrecked a pair of potentially perfect 4A seasons (the Millers conquered Carmel in a 68-67 overtime road victory Dec. 4), really turned that defense on at the beginning of the second stanza.
“We started out with man tonight and then switched it up to the zone, and that kind of discombobulated them a bit,” said Noblesville coach Dave McCollough. “They were out there passing the ball around and working the clock against it.”
With things tied at 12 going into the second period, neither team could generate much offense. The Millers, however, were even stingier than Kokomo.
The Wildkats managed only a putback by Braxton She’ton as Noblesville built a 21-14 halftime lead capped off by Andrew Lively’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
“There are no excuses, none at all,” Kokomo coach Brian McCauley said when asked if the short turnaround time of three tough games in five days accounted for the offensive struggles. “We have to practice against the zone and have more confidence in our ball movement.
“We’ve had 34 practices to prepare for that, and it is up to the players and the coaches to learn from this and move forward.”
Kokomo continued to struggle over the next 10 minutes as it fell behind 40-24 early in the fourth period. That’s when D.J. Balentine took it upon himself to ignite a furious rally.
Balentine scored the first seven points of a 12-0 run that saw Kokomo turn up its defensive intensity and claw back into the game. The Wildkats made the run in a little under two minutes, getting the deficit down to 40-36 at the 3:50 mark of the final period.
That was as close as Kokomo would get, however, as the Millers settled down and got to the free throw line to seal it. Noblesville was 9 of 12 from the line in the final three minutes to put the game on ice.
But it was the defense that did the damage.
“We stayed with (the zone) in the second half, and our young post players did a good job of clogging the lane against them,” McCollough said.
On one critical play, in particular, the Noblesville defense hung tough.
Trailing 43-38 with the ball and just under two minutes to play, Kokomo’s T.J. Weir attempted a long 3-pointer that was blocked by Jake Yeary. Yeary knocked Weir to the ground as he landed, but he managed to bat the loose ball to Michael Deines for a breakaway layup and a five-point shift.
Leland Brown’s play was critical on this night for the Millers. The 6’4” senior was a matchup nightmare on the perimeter for Kokomo, leading Noblesville with 18 points. Brown hit three of four free throws down the stretch to help ice the game, and his effort defensively was also critical as he helped deny Kokomo’s outside shooters.
“Both teams were pretty physical tonight, but Leland has always been a physical player,” McCollough said. “They came after us a little during that run and made us throw some bad passes that led to easy baskets.
“We had a little bit of a meltdown there, but I was proud we were able to hit some free throws to win it.”
Balentine led all scorers with 21 points for Kokomo, 17 of which came in the second half as the young sophomore continues to improve his stock. Lively finished with 14 points for Noblesville on a night that included four big 3-pointers – two of which ballooned the lead early in the second half.
Noblesville next will face Warsaw (5-1) in the 7:15 p.m. ET game of the Mackey Arena Shootout Jan. 2. Kokomo will look to avoid another upset Dec. 29 when the Wildkats host upstart Westfield (4-2) at 7:30 p.m.

Sw: Carmel sweeps host Hamilton Southeastern, two others

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
It was a Carmel sweep Dec. 21 as the top-ranked Greyhound girls swimming team and the No. 3 Carmel boys each came out on top of the annual four-way meet at Hamilton Southeastern.
In a unique head-to-head scoring system, the female Greyhounds defeated No. 2 host Hamilton Southeastern 120-63 while Carmel’s males prevailed 116-67 over the fourth-ranked HSE boys. Both Carmel and Southeastern also handily defeated the meet’s other two schools, West Lafayette and Lafayette Jefferson.
Despite the harrowing defeat, HSE coach Andy Pedersen called his girls relentless and praised their strong races throughout the meet.
“Carmel was just too much for our ladies today, but I am proud of the fight in our team and the two victories over the visitors from Lafayette,” Pedersen said. “The HSE Natatorium was loud all meet long, and a great deal of that was coming from the HSE athletes.
“They cheered for each and every race – it was impressive!”
Victories were very hard to come by for the home-pool Royals, making wins from senior Carly Mercer (:50.94 in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:52.20 in the 200 free – both events in which Carmel swept second through fifth place) even more impressive.
“I thought that our seniors were pretty amazing as they turned a long day into a really fun time where the entire team was upbeat and positive,” Pedersen said. “It was a good day for the Royals, and we would like to wish you all happy holidays!”

Carmel took all the other events except 1-meter diving, where West Lafayette junior Caitlin Sotelo won with 211.55 points. That included double wins from senior Trish Regan (2:06.41 in the 200 individual medley, :57.83 in the 100 butterfly) and sophomore Lacey Locke (:24.24 in a 1-2-3 sweep of the 50 free, a :56.57 in a 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 backstroke).
Carmel, a national-record 23-time defending state champion, also swept the three relays. Locke, senior Lauren Stauder, Regan, and junior Carly Marshall led a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.11; junior Rhiannon Sheets, freshman Ariana Bullard, sophomore Alexis Bullard, and Regan captured the 200 free relay in 1:38.04; and the 400 free relay foursome of Sheets, Marshall, Locke, and sophomore Lucy Kramer was victorious in 3:34.49
Kramer led a ridiculous 1-4 finish in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.83, while sophomore Margret Ramsey paced a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free with a 5:12.55.
“We had a good showing against the second-best team in the state today,” said Carmel coach Chris Plumb. “There were some close races, and our team showed some resiliency and fought back in each of the tight races.”
