BB: Alexandria coach Garth Cone dies at age 63

From elwoodpublishing.com
Garth Cone, basketball coach at Alexandria, died early March 23 at Community Hospital in Anderson after a sudden illness. His huge heart made a difference in thousands of lives.
For more than 30 years, Cone was a teacher and basketball coach for the Alexandria-Monroe School Corporation. Cone mentored hundreds of basketball players in his years in Alexandria.
His basketball philosophy was built around three basic ideas: hard work, repetition of fundamentals, and dedication to the goal of taking young boys and developing them into young men who will become citizens of which the community can be proud.
Cone also founded the Tiger Readers program in the 1990s, which coupled reading and athletics in the Alexandria school system – a program which has been duplicated all over the state of Indiana.
There will be many “coach Cone” stories shared in Madison County and throughout the state in the upcoming days as the number of people he has impacted over the years is incredible.
Cone and his wife, Cinda, were parents of two sons, Rodney and Thad, and a daughter, Krista Baledge. He also had eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
NOTE: We’ve posted an interview with this story that Executive Director Mike McGraw did with Cone following the Tigers’ victory over Mississinewa in late January. Our deepest condolences to the family and community …

St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards back in 2010!

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Nominations are once again being submitted for the St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards. This program – different from most in that the awards are presented to athletes for qualities exhibited off the field of competition as well as on – has become the highlight of the summer in Central Indiana high school sports.

The Spirit of Sport Awards, a main initiative of St. Vincent Sports Performance, is presented based on the cornerstone philosophies of St. Vincent Hospital and its connected organizations. Awards are given in the areas of Comeback Athlete of the Year, Scholar Athlete of the Year, Service to the Poor, the Robert Craven Humanitarian Award, and the encompassing Spirit of Sport Award.

For the next several months, we at Hoosier Authority will be honored to bring you video features on the stories of the nominees for these prestigious awards to be held Sunday, July 11. We assure you that you will be brought to tears, swell with pride, and have your faith in youth restored by these stories.

We will begin posting the features this week, and we hope you enjoy seeing them as much as we enjoy producing them.

BB SEMI: 4A #6 Warsaw survives upset bid of #13 Carroll (FW), 58-53

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

HUNTINGTON – Anybody who thinks “Hoosier Hysteria” is on life support certainly didn’t make the trek to Huntington for the Class 4A northern semistate March 20.

This was Indiana high school basketball at its legendary best. It featured two talented, exceptionally well-coached and intelligent teams battling in front of 6,000 rabid fans that comprised an orange and neon green sea of sound.

In the end, sixth-ranked Warsaw triumphed over No. 13 Carroll (Fort Wayne) in a 58-53 game that was absolutely worthy of the atmosphere it created. The victory sends this legendary Northern Indiana program back to the state finals for a date with No. 3 North Central (Indianapolis), an 82-77 southern semistate winner over No. 12 Jeffersonville.

It only added to the intensity that these two clubs had faced each other just three weeks ago in the regular-season finale. Warsaw (23-2) claimed that game by nine points, 66-57. Carroll (21-4) learned from that lesson, and the opening eight minutes of this contest were as even as possible.

Warsaw went 6 of 12 from the field in the opening stanza, including three buckets from 3-point range. Carroll responded with 6-of-13 shooting, but four from long range. Combined, the two clubs committed only three turnovers.

As you might expect, the scoreboard reflected the even play. Carroll ended the period with a 17-16 lead. Looking back, however, Carroll accomplished something with that 4-for-7 trey success that the Chargers would struggle with the rest of the day against Warsaw’s ever-adjusting 2-3 zone.

By halftime, that long-distance marksmanship had trailed off to 6 of 13 for Carroll. The results were predictable as Warsaw controlled the second quarter of play, due mainly to the outstanding play of lightning-quick guard Nic Moore.

The 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate netted 15 first-half points and added five assists. Moore’s dynamic play was a trend that was to continue for the rest of the contest.

Nonetheless the Tigers’ lead was just 33-30 at intermission. And if Warsaw was frustrated at not being able to build a comfortable lead in the second period, the Tigers had to be downright beside themselves in the third.

Warsaw blanketed the Chargers for the entire quarter as Carroll scored just four points in the first seven minutes of the period. But the Tigers simply could not take advantage of the numerous opportunities they had to blow the game open, and it took nearly the entire quarter for the Tigers to open the lead to six points at 40-34.

That cushion was gone in the blink of an eye.

In the final minute of the third, Carroll’s Tyler Ault was fouled on a drive to the bucket. He sank the first charity toss to cut the margin to 40-35. He then missed the second but grabbed his own rebound, then not only netted the putback but also got fouled again.

When Ault sank that free throw, the lead was suddenly back to only two at 40-38. Warsaw succeeded in increasing it back to four by the end of the period, but the game was still very much in doubt.

Carroll started the fourth quarter with another old-fashioned three-point play, and the battle was on. Just how close to the vest was the final minutes of this one played? With 7:27 to go and the score 42-41, Carroll post player Shane Merryman picked up his fourth foul.

Without so much as wasting a single possession, Warsaw coach Doug Ogle called timeout to set up a play to take advantage of Merryman’s absence. It resulted in the Tigers canning two free throws to maintain the advantage.

The lead never exceeded five points in the closing minutes. Carroll tied the game once and cut the lead to two or less on three other occasions. The Chargers’ last gasp came in the closing seconds and, unfortunately for the Northeast Hoosier Conference tri-champs, typified their ultimate demise.

Warsaw, the outright Northern Lakes Conference king, led 56-53 with less than 30 seconds to play. Carroll effectively worked the ball and fed the post. When the Tigers’ zone collapsed, the pass from the pivot back to the perimeter presented a wide-open three attempt to tie the game with eight seconds to play.

The shot caromed long off the rim, though, and Warsaw survived. The last attempt was only one of many treys to go awry for Carroll in the final three periods. After beginning with that torrid 4-of-7 spurt in the first eight minutes, Carroll finished just 6 of 24 from beyond the arc.

Moore finished with 26 points for Warsaw and the respect of every single member of the capacity crowd. The 5’9” junior spoke with Hoosier Authority after the game (see video player!).

Merryman and Ault paced Carroll with 16 points apiece, while Stephen Jones added 14.

BB SEMI: 3A #6 Washington throttles top-ranked Danville, 57-38

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
SOUTHPORT – Class 3A No. 6 Washington scored the most resounding upset of the semistate round March 20, toppling top-ranked Danville, 57-38, in front of a frenzied sold-out crowd of 7,124 at Southport Fieldhouse.
The Hatchets, who will be making their third trek to Conseco Fieldhouse for the 3A title game in the last six seasons, were monuments of efficiency at the offensive end of the floor. Washington hit 21 of its 37 field goal attempts for 56-percent shooting, including a scalding 64 percent (9 of 14) in the second half in keeping Danville totally at bay.
Guard Dylan Ervin was the surprise leader for the Hatchets (22-3), going 9 of 12 from the field, 2 of 2 from the free throw line, and hitting his only 3-point attempt en route to a game- high 21 points. The 5’11” sophomore scored six of Washington’s first eight points and ended the opening period with a steal and bucket at the buzzer.
Ervin was joined in double figures by 6’10” junior center Cody Zeller, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and 5’1)’ junior guard Kurtis Anthony, who hit five of his six shots in totaling 11 points.
Danville, on the other hand, finished a fantastic 25-2 season with an abysmal performance. The dreadfully pertinent Warrior stats:
Danville shot just 22 percent (11 of 50) for the game: 6 of 25 in the first half, 5 of 25 in the second.
The Warriors fared better from outside than in, going 5 of 19 from behind the 3-point line but just 3 of 14 (21 percent) when they really needed it in the second half.
Danville’s frigid shooting squandered numerous opportunities off a whopping 11 Warrior steals as Washington committed 18 turnovers.
Senior 6’2” swingman Travis Weidner led Danville with 19 points, including 4 of 10 from behind the arc, but he was just 5 of 17 (29 percent) from the field overall before fouling out.
Senior 6’10” center Travis Carroll has a solid, if unspectacular game with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 11 rebounds for one last double-double before heading off to Purdue.
“We’ve got to give Washington all the credit in the world,” said Danville coach Brian Barber. “They came in very aggressive and executed their game plan very well.
“We just couldn’t get the ball in the basket.”
This highly anticipated Carroll-Zeller clash of the 6’10” titans didn’t appear to have the makings of a blowout as the opening period came to close with Washington leading by just three on Ervin’s last-second wizardry, 15-12. But the Hatchets turned up the defense over the second and third stanzas, limiting Danville to just four points in the second and 12 in the third while totaling 13 and 17 themselves.
Time and again, the Washington faithful howled with delight as Zeller led by example in outfighting the entire Danville team for loose balls. Though his numbers weren’t spectacular – 5 of 10 shooting, 3 of 8 from the free throw line, seven turnovers – he did pull down a game-high 12 rebounds in constantly keeping the Hatchets fired up with his fierce and focused effort.
Trailing 28-16 at intermission, Danville never made its expected run in the second half as Washington hit a pair of layups and went 5 of 6 from the stripe in the final three minutes to pull away from a 38-26 contest.
Washington will face fifth-ranked Gary Wallace, a 57-47 northern semistate winner over No. 9 Fort Wayne Elmhurst, for the 3A crown March 27 at 6 p.m. ET. The last two times Washington has made the finals, a Zeller led them to victory before carting off the Indiana Mr. Basketball award.
Though Cody would have to wait till next year for such an honor, there’s no doubt he’s capably filling the legendary (and sizeable) shoes of older brothers Luke and Tyler.

BB SEMI: 4A #3 North Central holds off #12 Jeffersonville, 82-77

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
SOUTHPORT – Class 4A third-ranked North Central shot a splendid 53 percent from the field March 20 in fending off the upset bid of No. 12 Jeffersonville, 82-77, in the southern semistate played at a jam-packed Southport Fieldhouse.
The fast-paced Panthers (24-3) raced out to a 25-16 lead after one quarter and kept their jets fueled the rest of the as Jeffersonville could never quite get over the hump.
Here’s the game story, courtesy of news-tribune.net …
For the second consecutive postseason contest, the Jeffersonville boys basketball team appeared primed to knock out another top-three ranked opponent from the 100th IHSAA state tournament.
But unlike No. 1 Bloomington South in last weekend’s Class 4A Seymour Regional final, No. 3 North Central (Indianapolis) refused to collapse against the pesky Red Devils Saturday at Southport.
On the strength of sophomore sensation D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera’s game-high 25 points, the Panthers ended Jeff’s thrilling postseason run with an 82-77 victory.
North Central will face No. 6 Warsaw (23-2), a 58-53 victor over Carroll (Fort Wayne) in the northern semistate at Huntington North, in the 4A state championship game March 27 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Despite the loss, third-year Red Devils coach Tim LaGrange lauded his troops for gelling at the right time of the season. Jeff finished with a 22-5 record and entered the semistate with a 14-game win streak, which included claiming its first sectional title since 2006 and its first regional crown since 2000.
“The kids played their hearts out – we just couldn’t put it together at both ends of the court today,” LaGrange said. “I’m so proud of this group. You could see the fight in us today, and we didn’t have that in the middle part of the season. They became men and bonded together.”
North Central seemed to be ready to pull away from the Devils at the second half’s outset. Sophomore Ronnie Johnson nailed a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the third quarter to put the Panthers up 48-37. Jeff whittled the advantage down to three points at 60-57 with 7:46 remaining in regulation when senior Drake Coleman converted a three-point play.
With the Red Devils trailing 64-58 at the 5:31 mark of the fourth quarter, Coleman got them within three points again by swishing a three from the corner. That is when Smith-Rivera displayed the talent that is making several NCAA Division I college coaches knock on his door.
The 6’4” guard scored all of his team’s points during a 9-4 spurt to extend North Central’s lead to 73-65. Smith-Rivera had three layups during the run, two of those coming off Johnson assists.
Veteran North Central coach Doug Mitchell said Smith-Rivera picked up the slack when the Jeff defense keyed on Panthers’ leading scorer Terone Johnson, a Purdue recruit.
“When they went to the box-and-one (defense), we put Terone on the perimeter,” Mitchell said. “That opened things up for D’Vauntes.’
During the 9-4 run, Smith-Rivera said he wanted to attack Jeff senior center A.J. Adams.
“He’s a good, athletic kid, but I knew I had to take it to him,” Smith-Rivera said.
After the Panthers laid in two more buckets to up their lead to 77-65 with 1:09 remaining, Jeff made one last-ditch run.
Red Devil junior V.J. Billups tipped in a putback basket to start a 9-2 spurt. After Ronnie Johnson downed two foul shots, junior Evan Maschmeyer hit a runner before Coleman nailed a three to get Jeff within seven at 79-72.
North Central then threw away an in-bounds pass, which resulted in a layup by Wright State signee senior Kegan Clark to pull the Red Devils within five with 24 seconds left.
But Smith-Rivera, who scored 16 points in the final quarter, iced the victory by going 3 of 4 at the stripe.
“We had a hard time putting together consecutive runs, and they had a lot to do with that,” LaGrange said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well. If we shot the ball better, it could’ve been a different fate.”
Five Jeff players scored in double figures. Maschmeyer tallied 18 points, going 3 of 8 from 3-point range and 5 of 6 at the stripe. Coleman chipped in 16 points, making three treys and shooting a perfect 5 of 5 at the line. Adams and Clark each scored 11 points in their final games wearing a Jeff uniform, while Billups poured in 10.
Adams recorded game highs in rebounds (nine), blocks (two), and steals (two).
Mitchell praised the effort the Red Devils put forth on Saturday.
“They played their hearts out, and they’re well-coached,” Mitchell said. “We’ll try to enjoy this, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
Ronnie and Terone Johnson, who are brothers, each scored 15 points, while Smith-Rivera and Terone Johnson each grabbed eight boards. Smith-Rivera dished out five assists, all of which came in the first half.
LaGrange and the Red Devil underclassmen said goodbye to their four seniors: Adams, Clark, Coleman, and Dominique Catlett.
“The greatest joy for me is to be a part of the process of these kids becoming men,” LaGrange said. “That’s more important to me than wins and losses. I’m proud of the seniors and how far they have come.”
