St. Vincent SOS: Blake Lueders of Zionsville

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
One of the reasons we love high school sports is they are a breeding ground for the All-American story. Zionsville’s Blake Lueders is just that type of story.
Considered one of Indiana’s best gridiron prospects during the 2009 season, Lueders is headed to Stanford University on a football scholarship. He also starred during his high school days for the resurgent Eagles basketball team.
Blake is not a young man who entered high school with a giant reputation. He is, however, leaving Zionsville with a giant reputation as Lueders dedicated himself to excellence in and out of the arena of competition.
His work in the classroom might well have qualified him to attend the hallowed halls of Stanford even if he had never picked up a football. His unwavering work in the weight room has taken native athletic ability and created the decorated athlete he has become.
Off the field, Lueders has spent many hours passing his experience on to younger players by coaching in the Zionsville youth leagues. He also has devoted himself to countless hours of community service in his hometown.
All of these things have led Lueders to be nominated for the St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Award, the honor that encompasses all of the founding principles of St Vincent. Above all, it takes only a few minutes around Blake to realize that he simply does not take himself too seriously.
He is a young man of few words, but one with a huge sense of humor. We hope you enjoy our interview with this special Zionsville Eagle …

GT&F Royal Relays: #4 Warren Central fends off five ranked foes for title

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
Warren Central didn’t win the most events April 17 at the annual Royal Relays, but the fourth-ranked Warriors (112.5 points) still were able to capture the team title with a 7.5-point victory over runner-up host #12 Hamilton Southeastern.
The Royals (105) were a surprise second-place finisher in this uniquely formatted eight-team competition that pairs up athletes in the field events, outdueling third-ranked Pike by 10.5 points in trailing only victorious Warren Central. No. 6 Lawrence North (92) finished fourth, with 13th-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) fifth at 73 and No. 2 Fort Wayne Northrop (69) sixth.
“This is always a great meet,” said HSE coach Julie Alano, who cited the 34 team points from Brooke Morgan and Jessica Postlewaite – 5:14.44 and 5:20.74, respectively, in placing first and third in the 1600 meters, 11:35.39 and 11:42.50 in going 1-2 in the 3200 – as being crucial to the Royals’ runner-up finish.
“With the relays and different events, it is always close.”
Among other notable efforts on a cool, sunny Saturday was Lawrence North’s impressive 3:53.89 meet record in the 4×400 meter relay from the Wildcats’ foursome of Majaica Brooks, Ashley Spencer, Antonia Franklin, and Ahlivia Spencer. That smashed the seven-year old mark of 3:58.22 set by Warren Central’s B. Cunningham, L. Assefa, A. Seehase, and B. Adams.
Pike’s Morgan Yeadon also set a new meet mark with her :11.8 in the 100-meter dash – one of four first-place finishes for the Red Devils. The others were Chelsea Yeadon in the long jump (16-11.50), Elizabeth Herron in the pole vault (10-06.00), and the 4×200 meter relay unit of Lauren Ford, Chelsea Yeadon, Terrice Hooks, and Eshe Austin in 1:47.85.
Warren Central’s wins came in the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle (1:09.95 from an unknown first-leg runner, India Williams, Geoyia Nightengale, and Tiariana Herron), the 4×100 meter relay (:49.71 from Brianna Aikens, Logan Hayes, Shannon Parker, and Latisha Martin) and Hayes (:57.65) leading Martin (:58.31) to a 1-2 finish in the 400 meters.
Lawrence North had two other team wins on the day in addition to the blazing-fast efforts of its 4×4 relay grouping. The foursome of Stephanie Madsen, Brooks, Marie Richardson, and Sarah Field took the distance medley in 13:21.16, while Ashley Spencer won the 300 hurdles in :45.02.
North Central got a pair of individual victories in the discus from Mercedes Montgomery (122-02) and the high jump by Morayo Akande (5-05.00). Fort Wayne Northrop’s lone win came in the shot put, where Sidra Sherrill posted a 40-01.25.
