Mike: McRoberts will regret his decision to blow off Indiana All-Stars

By Mike McGraw

HA.com Executive Director

Carmel standout basketball player Josh McRoberts has informed organizers he doesnâ??t want to play for the Indiana All-Stars this summer. That is a decision that is obviously within his rights, even if it appears to observers to be one born of selfishness.

We at HA.com believe that it is a decision he will regret in the years to come.

It may well be unfair to attribute McRobertsâ?? position to selfishness. He has not said anything publicly to the effect that this is in reaction to him not winning Indiana Mr. Basketball. In fact, the Duke-bound player, family, and school are being tight-lipped on the matter, and that is certainly their prerogative.

However, in the absence of any reason to the contrary, people will come to that conclusion.

Regardless of his reasoning, McRoberts is likely, and hopefully, going to look back years from now and regret his decision. Being an Indiana All-Star is the pinnacle for a prep player in this state. It is an honor that carries with it the respect and gratitude of an entire state for the rest of a young athleteâ??s life.

Moreover, there are players throughout the state who would give anything to be handed the opportunity to wear that uniform. One can only hope the young man has an awfully good reason to turn up his nose at the generations of tradition connected with the series.

McRoberts is not the first Indiana standout player to turn his back on the All-Stars after failing to win Mr. Basketball accolades. Brebeufâ??s Alan Henderson (second to Gary Rooseveltâ??s Glenn Robinson) did it in 1991 before heading off to Indiana, and Muncie Centralâ??s Bonzi Wells (second to Valparaisoâ??s Bryce Drew) did it 1994 before going to Ball State.

Disappointment is part of athletics. So is the responsibility of being a role model for younger children in the community. We believe that Josh will realize that some day, and it is then that he will regret his decision.

At least we sincerely hope so.

Balanced team effort leads North girls to win in North/South Indiana All-Star Classic

Hamilton Southeasternâ??s Kahla Roudebush led four scorers in double figures as the South easily dispatched the North, 91-72, in the 2005 North/South Indiana All-Star Classic girls basketball game April 17 at Plymouth High School.

Roudebush, a 5â??8â? forward headed to Cincinnati, hit 6 of 10 shots from the field for 13 points in helping the South pull away from a 45-39 halftime lead.

The other double-figure scorers for the South, coached by Castleâ??s Wayne Allen, all finished with 11 points. They were:

?· Corydonâ??s Dana Beaven (Bellarmine)

?· North Harrisonâ??s Tara Miller (Indiana)

?· Richmondâ??s Angela Willis (Roane State)

Alexandriaâ??s Jodi Howell, Indianaâ??s Miss basketball, was the only North player to get to double figures as the 6-foot guard bound for Purdue hit 4 of 6 from the floor and 1 of 3 free throws. Three North players finished with 8 points for coach Dave Cox of Plymouth. They were:

?· South Bend St. Josephâ??s Aimee Litka (Valparaiso)

?· Marionâ??s Tanika Mays (IUPUI)

?· South Bend Rileyâ??s Kendra Reynolds (Indiana State)

Meanwhile, Indianapolis Cathedral’s Kimberly Roberson (Indiana) posted a solid all-around game with nine points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The North/South Indiana Classic was sponsored by Hoosier Basketball Magazine, Plymouth High School, and Pacesetter Sports of Terre Haute. The Classic started 13 years ago largely through the efforts of a trio of Richmond men â??? Frank Kovaleski, the high school athletic director; George Griffith, the high school boys basketball coach; and Bob VanPelt, a Richmond businessman â??? along with Garry Donna, publisher of Hoosier Basketball Magazine.

Mike: Hey! This (minor high school sports) is fun, too!

By Mike McGraw

HA.com Executive Director

It was a beautiful Saturday morning. It was the kind of day tailor-made for sitting back and basking in the sun while watching really good sports. That is exactly what I did, attending the Royal Relays at Hamilton Southeastern High School.

This was a classic track & field meet, featuring seven of the top 15 girls teams in Indiana. The only thing that spoiled this morning was the thought that kept going through my mind: â??Where is everybody?â?

This outstanding competition was held in front of less than 200 people. That goes way past unfortunate — it is disgraceful. These young ladies are athletes, too. They compete just as hard AND just as well as their classmates do in the gym on a wintry Friday night.

So, why doesnâ??t anybody come to watch their efforts? And more importantly, what can be done about it?

First of all, parents — shame on you! If we teach our children to work, sacrifice, and then compete their hearts out on a Saturday, then the least they can expect from us is our attendance and applause for their efforts. If the parents and families of just 70 percent of the athletes competing at HSE on Saturday had been in the stands, attendance would have tripled.

Secondly, the standard media outlets need to re-evaluate their priorities. Newspapers and radio love to boast of how much attention they give to high school sports, and in many cases that is true. However, when it comes to the so-called â??minor,â? or non-revenue, sports, they pay absolutely no attention. At best, they print capsule results — if they are supplied by the host school.

The idea of promoting a big event in an effort to increase interest is simple common sense. The media outlets will tell you that determining such editorial content incurs a financial decision based on the allocation of resources. And that, to a great extent, is true. However, an occasional promotional blurb for big competitions is neither expensive nor overly demanding on capacity.

Finally, school athletic departments need to do a better job of promoting the non-revenue sports. It is very easy to fall into the trap of believing that football and basketball must pay all the freight for the athletic department.

Donâ??t get me wrong. Nobody expects, nor should, that three or four thousand people are going to flock to a track meet in Indiana. That, however, does not mean that attendance canâ??t — and shouldnâ??t — be much better than it is.

If you will allow us a brief pat on our own back, this is one of the reasons that HoosierAuthority.com exists! We are here to promote and help give exposure to the great athletes that we so often never hear about. Together, letâ??s try to fight the good fight.

Warren Central reigns at Royal Relays girls track meet

By Mike McGraw

HA.com Executive Director

Anyone preparing to compete against the Warren Central girls track & field team this spring had better pay special attention to the field part. The seventh-ranked Warriors took first place in four of the five field events and rode that dominance to victory April 16 in the Royal Relays at Hamilton Southeastern.

No. 12 Lawrence North finished second, while 15th-ranked Indianapolis Chatard used an extremely balanced effort to finish third in the eight-team field.

With seven of the eight schools ranked in the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coachesâ?? top 15 statewide, this meet was billed as a clash among Indianaâ??s best. It did not disappoint.

Meet records were broken in six different events, and often the previous records were eclipsed by athletes who didnâ??t even win the event this year.

Warren Central, for its part, set new marks in the long jump (Courtney Wareâ??s 17-05.75) and the shot put (Kimmy Reedâ??s 44-09.50).

Westfield showed why itâ??s considered to have one of the best stables of distance runners in the state. Kristina Krasichâ??s 5.12.36 in the 1600 meter run bested the old meet standard by more than nine seconds. In the distance medley relay, the Shamrock foursome of Maggie Bingham, Kristin Simpson, Breanne Ehrman, and Krasich shattered the old record by 17 seconds.

Not to be outdone, Chatardâ??s Brittany Bill ran an 11.31.15 in the 3200, bettering the old record by 18 seconds in leading a group of five runners who broke the meet standard.

Hereâ??s are the final team standings:

1. No. 7 Warren Central, 98 points

2. No. 12 Lawrence North, 89

3. No. 15 Indianapolis Chatard, 86

4. No. 5 North Central (Indianapolis), 85

5. No. 9 Hamilton Southeastern, 82

6. No. 10 Westfield, 80

7. No. 13 Pike, 62

8. Lafayette Jefferson, 41

The state rankings are bound to see some juggling as a result of this meet. Chatard finished ahead of five teams ranked above them in the polls. No. 13 Pike, on the other hand, finished fourth in the meet but showed some lack of balance, doing almost all of their damage in the sprints.

The Top 500: Indiana high schools producing bumper crop of baseball prospects

The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association list of the stateâ??s Top 500 prospects indicates a strong crop of players competing on the diamonds this spring. This list was compiled by association members after evaluation at camps and clinics across the state as well as regular game competition during the season.

HoosierAuthority.com has grouped players into three regions in Indiana: Southern, Central, and Northern. Within each region, players are grouped by their status as prospects. The lists are separated into players whom the coaches consider draftable straight out of high school (D), major college prospects (MC), small college candidates (SC), and junior college possibilities (JC).

Part of the fun of baseball is debating over the merits of different players. After reviewing the coaches’ rankings, log onto the HA.com Message Boards and let us know your opinion!

Tiffany Longworth: Back home again in Indiana

By Mike McGraw

Executive Director

People who know basketball paid her the ultimate compliment. They said she played like a boy.

Her name was Tiffany Longworth, and she was the poster child of the greatest dynasty in Indiana girls high school basketball history — the Kokomo Lady Wildkats of the early 1990s.

Kokomo charged to state championships in 1992 (when Tiffany scored 40 points in Kokomoâ??s two state finals games, including a 70-60 finals win over McCutcheon) and 1993 (when Kokomo put up a single-class semifinal record for points vs. Charlestown and Miss Basketball Abby Conklin, including the second half of a 88-58 victory in which the Lady Kats outscored their opponent 54-28; the 54 points are the most ever scored in a state championship half) with a style of play typified by the relentless aggression of this Indiana All-Star.

It was common in those days to hear coaches speak of how Tiffany simply played the game at a faster pace than any female player before her in the Hoosier state.

Longworth was recruited heavily by nearly every Big Ten school, but she surprised many in Indiana when she committed to play her college ball at Penn State. The Nittany Lions were just entering their first season in the Big Ten.

â??I just wanted to get away from Kokomo and see the world a little bit,â? said Longworth. â??I knew Penn State was where I wanted to go the minute Coach Portland came and made a home visit. It just clicked.â?

Indeed it did. Tiffany was a four-year starter for the Lions during an era when the team spent several stints as the nationâ??s top ranked team. When she graduated in 1998, Longworth had earned a spot as one of Penn Stateâ??s all-time greatest players.

Professional basketball options beckoned, but this Hoosier legend had little interest.

â??I really never considered playing professionally,â? Longworth said. â??I donâ??t know if it was burnout or what, but I just felt it was time to end that part of my life and move on.â?

Moving on meant moving back for Tiffany. She returned to Kokomo, and has stayed ever since.

Roughly a year after her return, Tiffany ran into a former schoolmate named Rich Boruff. The two later married, and Tiffany began her second career — that of wife and mother. She has two children: daughter Taylor, 4, and son Cole, who is 1. They are the joy of her life, as she always knew they would be.

â??I always knew I wanted to have children, even when I was playing ball,â? Longworth said. â??I canâ??t think of any greater satisfaction than being a parent.â?

Nonetheless, the lure of the game she loved so much is once again calling. Tiffany recently received her certification as a teacher, and, as you might guess, coaching is very likely in her future.

â??Iâ??d love to get into coaching some day — I love kids, and I love the game,â? Longworth said. â??It is kind of a natural.â?

We at HoosierAuthority.com hope Tiffany does enter the coaching ranks, but we issue a warning: If she can inspire others to play the game like she did, her teams might have a hard time scheduling games.

Thatâ??s because playing against one Tiffany Longworth was a nightmare. Playing against five of them could be a short route to retirement.

Tiffany Longworth Boruff, perhaps the greatest Wildkat of them all â?¦

Washington star and Notre Dame bound, Luke Zeller named Indiana Mr. Basketball

Washington 6â??11â? center Luke Zeller â??? he of the shot heard â??round the world that won an amazing Class 3A IHSAA boys basketball championship just two weeks ago â??? has been named 2005 Indiana Mr. Basketball by The Indianapolis Star.

The Notre Dame-bound big man received 101 of a possible 247 votes that were cast by Hoosier coaches and media members. Richmondâ??s Dominic James, the stateâ??s leading scorer at 31.1 points per game, was second with 63 votes, while Carmelâ??s Josh McRoberts, the most valuable player of the recent McDonaldâ??s High School All-American Game, was third with 41.

A dozen other Indiana high school seniors earned the remaining 42 votes.

Zeller, like McRoberts a McDonaldâ??s All-American (Zeller did not play in that game as it came only days after the state finals), becomes the second Washington player to be named Mr. Basketball. In 1979, Steve Bouchie â??? whose son, Bryan, was Zellerâ??s front-line teammate this season â??? won the award before heading off to win a national championship at Indiana University.

The 240-pounder was the hero of top-ranked Washingtonâ??s classic 3A 74-72 overtime win over Plymouth, an unbelievably thrilling game that saw 21 state finals records set or tied, including 15 of the 3-point variety.

In fact, it was Zellerâ??s 3-pointer at the buzzer â??? a 40-foot jump shot from just inside the half-court line â??? that catapulted the Hatchets to victory.

â??It was a Christian Laettner-type play,â? said a jubilant Washington coach Dave Omer, who concluded a 40-year coaching career with a perfect ending. â??He caught the ball, made a quick reverse dribble â?¦ right down the middle. Him making the basket doesnâ??t surprise me.â?

Zeller, the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award winner, finished one rebound shy of a triple-double against Plymouth as he posted game highs of 11 assists (an Indiana all-time championship game record) and nine rebounds to go along with his 27 points.

The thrilling victory enabled Washington, which finished at 27-2, to capture its fourth state title to go with ones in 1930, 1941, and again in â??42. Those last two came under the direction of legendary Indiana coach Marion Crawley.

Zeller committed to Notre Dame in his junior year, choosing the Irish over Illinois, Kansas, Stanford, and Missouri. The son of 6â?? 3â? basketball-playing parents (father Steve and mother Lorri played for Springville High in Iowa), Luke is the older brother of hoops-playing siblings Tyler (a 6â??7â? freshman who plays at Washington) and 12-year-old Cody (a member of the Indianapolis Municipal Gardens AAU team).

Indianaâ??s 66th Mr. Basketball averaged 19.6 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 59.1 percent from the field and 71.9 percent on his free throws during his senior year. Zellerâ??s remarkably consistent stats from his three previous seasons were:

?· Junior: 19.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 56.1 FG%, 67.3 FT%

?· Sophomore: 18.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 58.6 FG%, 80.0 FT %

?· Freshman: 15.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 61.1 FG%, 80.0 FT%

Valedictorian of his senior class of 164 with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, the All-American Scholar is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as well as being a volunteer for the Camp Illiana Habitat for Humanity. And Zeller annually participates in the Dr. Suess â??Read Across Americaâ? in elementary schools.

â??Luke truly embodies the values of being a student-athlete by his mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability,â? said Gary Puckett, Washingtonâ??s principal. â??In four years of watching Luke competing on the court and working in the classroom, I have never seen him act or behave in a negative manner.

â??His mental attitude on and off the court is exemplary. On the court, Luke respects and responds positively to his coaches and treats his teammates, opponents, and officials with the utmost class and respect.â?

In other words, the pride of Daviess County is a truly deserving Mr. Basketball. And an instant â??Hoosier Hysteriaâ? legend.

And donâ??t think for a second that Zeller is unaware of what his spectacular shot could ultimately mean in the annals of Indiana high school basketball, because heâ??s well aware of another famous shot that won a state championship.

“I did my entire junior research project on the movie ‘Hoosiers,’ finding out which parts were true and which parts weren’t,â? Zeller told The Indianapolis Star. “I know they got the last shot right â??? it’s in Bobby Plump’s book ([i/Last of the Small Town Heroes).”
