All-Sports Trophy: Who really is the best of the best?

The HoosierAuthority.com All-Sports Trophy had its origin in a Sports Illustrated article earlier this year. The magazine listed what it believed to be the dominant high school athletic programs across the country and in each state. They proclaimed the Ben Davis Giants and the Carmel Greyhounds as the best in Indiana.

As you might imagine, the article set off a lively discussion among the staff of HoosierAuthority.com, and there was considerable skepticism about the criteria the magazine used in determining its rankings. Finally, someone asked the million-dollar question: â??Why donâ??t we set our own criteria, establish a scoring system, and present our own award each year?â? That was an idea too good to pass up.

There was a great deal of debate, but we finally decided that an athletic department should be judged on four areas: competitive success, the development of quality athletes, the development of athletes who are also excellent students, and the level of fan support. In addition, we were all in agreement that this award should be based on an athletic department?s performance and not on its size; therefore, we have included adjustments in the scoring system that will prevent the state?s large schools from automatically dominating their smaller counterparts.

In the next few days, the detailed scoring system will be sent to all athletic directors in the state and, of course, posted here on HoosierAuthority.com. We will be publishing updates on the competition throughout the year, so be sure to keep an eye out for how you can help your favorite school!
