No. 13 Evansville Central dominates but No. 17 Fort Wayne Dwenger wins girls soccer semifinal, 2-0

By Mike McGraw

Executive Director

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Soccer is not always a fair game. Much like
football, the team which dominates play is not always the team that
wins. That was clearly the case Oct. 29 in No. 17 Fort Wayne Dwengerâ??s
2-0 girls soccer state semifinals win over 13th-ranked Evansville
Central.

The girls from the Pocket City controlled play throughout but went home with nothing to show for it.

This game quite possibly turned on a disallowed Evansville Central
goal in the final three minutes before halftime. The tally was waived
off due to an offside call from the official trailing the play. As a
result, the Bears remained fully on the attack, and Dwenger tallied in
the 48th minute on a counter surge. The goal came from the foot of
Blair Sorg and was assisted by Mary Peden.

It was no more than the third shot on goal that Dwenger had mustered all day long.

Despite stepping the pressure up even more in the gameâ??s waning
minutes, Central could not dent the net. Dwengerâ??s Margaret Allgeier
put things out of reach with a goal in the final five minutes.

For the victorious Saints, this might be a case of needing to be
careful what you wish for. The victory set up a date with No. 6
Zionsville in the title game. That is a tall order. The Eagles
thoroughly thrashed Lake Central in the other semi and possess blazing
team speed that the girls from Fort Wayne will be hard-pressed to
handle.

Class 3A: Alcorn races to 273 yards, 2 TDs as No. 8 New Pal downs Mississinewa, 19-7

By Adam Rouse

Staff Writer

NEW PALESTINE â??? Senior Eric Alcorn rushed for 273 yards and scored on runs of 89 and 78 yards to lead New Palestine to a 19-7 win over visiting Mississinewa Oct. 28 in Class 3A Sectional 21 action. Both teams came into the contest with matching 8-2 records, but it was the Dragons of New Pal who looked the part of an eight-win team.

â??Itâ??s always good to get this far,â? said New Palestine head coach Doug Armstrong. â??Itâ??s one of the most difficult things in high school sports to get through to win the sectional. At least we have a chance to do that (next week).â?

The Dragons will indeed to get a chance to defend their sectional title against Mount Vernon, who defeated Rushville, next week.

â??Itâ??s huge,â? said Alcorn. â??Itâ??s (winning sectional) what weâ??ve talked about since day one.â?

Paced by Alcorn, the Dragons (9-2) rushed for 301 yards and used a pair of big running plays to get the lead.

Meanwhile, the Mississinewa Indians (8-3) had opportunities galore inside New Palestine territory but were unable to take advantage. Eight of nine Indian drives went past the 50-yard line into New Palâ??s half of the field; only one drive resulted in points, which was the Indiansâ?? initial drive of the game.

In fact, consider this. Mississinewa ran 36 plays in the second half. Twenty-five of those plays were run in New Palestine territory and the Indians were able to put zero points on the scoreboard. All four second half drives went past the 50 and each drive ended after Mississinewa went for it on fourth down and failed.

The Indians did score first after getting an early turnover.

After junior defensive back Beau Corey intercepted Dragonsâ?? quarterback J.D. Hill on the first play from scrimmage, Mississinewa scored six plays later on a 12-yard touchdown run up the middle from senior Dustin Tyler to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Little did the Indians know it would be their only scoring drive of the night.

New Palestine responded with a 10-play, 81-yard drive that ended with an easy seven-yard touchdown pass from Hill to senior Brandon Hockett. Hill was able to find Hockett sitting wide open in the left corner of the end zone after Indian defenders bit on the play action.

After the Indians fumbled the snap at the Dragonsâ?? 10-yard line, New Pal scooped it up and the â??Eric Alcorn showâ? began in earnest. On the first play of the drive, Alcorn took the ball and sprinted to the left side and was able to get around the corner eluding several Mississinewa defenders on his way to a 89-yard touchdown run to give New Palestine a 13-7 lead (extra point missed) with 9:02 left in the half.

Neither team was able to move the ball the rest of the quarter, and the Dragons took a 13-7 lead into halftime.

The Indians got the ball after the break and went on another long drive into New Palestineâ??s half of the field. With first and 10 from the Dragonsâ?? 13, Mississinewaâ??s offense once again went into stall mode. A false start penalty on first down didnâ??t help matters and junior quarterback Justin Branock was sacked in between a pair of incomplete passes to end the scoring threat.

Deep inside its own territory, New Palestine turned to its home run hitter on first down. Mr. Alcorn was happy to oblige as he ripped off an amazing 78-yard touchdown run that saw him race down the left sideline then cut back into the middle and outrun defenders to increase the Dragonsâ?? lead to 19-7 with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter. It would be the last time points would be scored in the contest.

â??I try to let the big guys get in front of me,â? said Alcorn. â??It makes it 20 times easier.â?

The senior running back was impressive all night as he also had rushes of 32 and 16 yards.

â??Heâ??s a great talent,â? Armstrong said. â??He just has a knack of making plays.â?

Hill finished with 75 yards on 4-of-8 passing and a touchdown, while throwing a pair of interceptions.

The Indians were able to move the ball, gaining 203 yards on the ground and 92 through the air, but could never take advantage of key opportunities after scoring on their first drive of the game.

Class 5A: Hamilton Southeastern jumps to 24-0 halftime lead, holds off Lafayette Jeff, 27-14

By Jeff Hodge and J.C. Culver

Contributing Writers

FISHERS â??? Hamilton Southeastern, coming its their 49-0 beat down of Kokomo in opening-round Sectional 4 action, hosted a young Lafayette Jefferson team in Class 4A Sectional 4 sectional semifinal play Oct. 28. A 24-0 halftime lead was plenty for the host Royals (8-3), who prevailed, 27-14, over a Jeff team coming off a first-round bye.

With HSE leading 7-0, going 35 yards in five plays with the big play of the drive, a 32-yard run Brock Kelly. Kelly finished off the drive from the 2-yard line.

HSE forced Jeff (5-5) on another three and out deep in its own territory and took over on the Jeff 33. They scored in two plays in 47 seconds with Marcus Spann blowing by the Jeff defense on a 32 yd run. It was 14-0 with 5:33 in the first quarter and it was lookinâ?? like another blowout as the Jeff offense couldn’t get on track and the defense looked like they were outmatched.

On Jeff’s third possession, they had another three and out, but on the punt HSE fumbled and it looked like it was the break that Lafayette Jeff needed, recovering the ball at the HSE 38.

They moved the down to the HSE 11. But a 14-yard sack followed by a short gain made it 4th-and-25. Tim Fogarty’s pass to Ryan Poxon in the end zone went incomplete and HSE took over.

HSE went up 17-0 after a nine-play, 75-yard drive taking 3:55 off the clock with a Chris Summers 20-yard field goal.

Both teams traded three and outs and then Jeff seemingly was putting together a drive but it stalled at its own 42. HSE then goes 79 yards in two plays with Nate Powers taking a short pass on 2nd-and-11 and went weaving through the Jeff defense to go 80 yards to go up 24-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Jeff’s woes continued with the opening kickoff going out of bounds. After Quarterback Josh Powers’ 26-yard run, it looked like HSE was about to deliver the knockout blow on Jeff. But two plays later Jeff thwarted the drive with Josh Powers getting picked off by LB Travis Depew.

It seemed that Depew’s pickoff inspired the Jeff offense as they drove down to the HSE 12-yard line. After a quarterback draw that went for a short gain and after Brodie Morris’ sack, Tim Fogarty’s pass on 3rd-and-16 was picked off in the end zone; talk about the red zone being Kryptonite to the Jeff offense, you wondered if they would ever break through.

HSE converted Jeff’s miscue into a 10-play, 65-yard drive culminating in another field goal from Chris Summers from 32 yards out to make the score 27-0.

After the touchback, Jeff goes 80 yards in five plays with the aid of two long passes to Ryan Poxon and DeAndre Robinson and a personal foul on HSE which set up Jeff at the 2 for Matt Vlahogeorge’s TD to put Jeff on the board.

On the ensuing series, HSE had a 1st-and-5 because of an Jeff offside call and, after Marcus Spann gained four yards, HSE had second down at the 1. Josh Powers’ pass was picked off by Andrew Salazar at the Jeff 40. Jeff moved the ball down to 34 aided by a 34-yard pass play from Fogarty to Andrew Burke. Two plays later, the â??Red Zone Kryptoniteâ? reared its **** head when Fogarty’s pass went into a sea of blue jerseys for the interception that was returned 71 yards and that was pretty much all she wrote. Two plays later, HSE fumbled at the Jeff 10 with DePew recovering. Jeff then went 90 yards in 14 plays in 5:40 which no doubt was the best series of the evening which shows promise for a young team heading into next year since they’re only losing seven seniors.

Time to roll credits on this one. HSE (8-3) wins 27-14, they take on Carmel (7-4), which knocked out Anderson Highland 49-7, Nov. 5 at Carmel. This game could be a track meet. J and J will give you the lowdown on this game next week. Out!

Class 5A: No. 5 Lawrence North regains pulse for goal-line stand, topples 11th-ranked North Central, 10-7, in OT

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Fifth-ranked Lawrence North definitely did not bring its â??Aâ? game Oct. 28 to its Class 5A Sectional 5 semifinal showdown at No. 11 North Central (Indianapolis). The Wildcats combined an anemic offense with multiple turnovers and a pair of missed field goals, then nearly gave the game away on a 55-yard run up the middle by the Panthersâ?? Chad Spann with a minute to go.

But LN defensive back Collin Coffer made a game-saving, somehow-ran-him-down tackle on Spann at the 4-yard line. And after the Wildcats held North Central, then held their breaths as a 22-yard field goal that would have given the Panthers the win went wide left to end regulation, Coffer came up big again in overtime.

The junior DB intercepted North Central quarterback Nate Pribbenoâ??s third-down pass in the end zone, allowing the Wildcats to make good on a third three-point attempt three plays later. Nick Freelandâ??s 19-yard field goal clinched a 10-7 Lawrence North victory, and there were no doubts anywhere on a frigid Friday night that the Wildcats were majorly lucky to escape.

Next up Nov. 5:

Lawrence North gets a rematch with third-ranked Warren Central Nov. 5. As you recall, it was just three weeks ago that LN upset the then No. 1-ranked Warriors, 33-14. The setting will be the same as the Wildcats hit the road for the third straight week in postseason play, and it will be more than a little interesting to see what kind of payback the sure-to-be-focused two-time defending 5A state champs have in mind â?¦

Week 12 sectional championship preview: ALL the games

Staff Report

Now itâ??s time for the hardware! Thanks to John Harrellâ??s fantabulous website, HoosierAuthority.com brings you a â??numbersâ? preview of every Week 12 sectional championship showdown.

Among the biggies in Class 5A are:

â?¢ Sectional 1: No. 2 Crown Point at No. 9 Merrillville. A rematch of the Week 3 tilt won by Crown Point, 13-0, for big-school supremacy in â??The Region.â?

â?¢ Sectional 5: No. 5 Lawrence North at No. 3 Warren Central. A Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference war between Class 5Aâ??s two strongest teams (according to the Sagarin power ratings) and a rematch of the 33-14 upset win by LN in Week 9.

â?¢ Sectional 6: Indianapolis Northwest at Decatur Central: Indianapolis Public Schoolsâ?? shining star faces the lone remaining Conference Indiana team.

â?¢ Sectional 7: Terre Haute North at No. 8 Avon. The visiting Patriots may be only 5-6, but they play in the tough MIC and thumped Bloomington South and Center Grove at home to get here.

The Class 4A juggernauts are:

â?¢ Sectional 10: Concord at No. 4 Plymouth. A rematch of the Week 7 game won 27-14 by Plymouth, Class 4Aâ??s second-best team according to Sagarin.

â?¢ Sectional 11: Fort Wayne South at No. 7 Fort Wayne Dwenger. Rematch of Week 5 game at South won handily by Dwenger, 35-14.

â?¢ Sectional 12: No. 10 Muncie Central at No. 12 Delta. Delaware County battle and rematch of last yearâ??s sectional semifinal won by Muncie Central, 7-6.

â?¢ Sectional 13: No. 2 Indianapolis Cathedral at No. 6 Roncalli. Ay yi yi, does it get any bigger among the stateâ??s Catholic powers? Cathedral, Sagarinâ??s top 4A school, beat Roncalli, the three-time defending state champ, 21-14 in Week 6.

Class 3Aâ??s trio of big games are:

â?¢ Sectional 17: No. 16 Hammond Morton at No. 1 Griffith. You can call it a rematch of the Week 5 58-13 whoopinâ?? applied by Griffith, the stateâ??s biggest postseason favorite.

â?¢ Sectional 22: No. 9 Danville at No. 3 Indianapolis Chatard. Class 3Aâ??s third- and second-strongest teams face off in a rematch of last yearâ??s 55-7 sectional championship romp by Chatard.

â?¢ Sectional 24: Evansville Mater Dei at Heritage Hills. Easily the marquee game in Southern Indiana and a rematch of last yearâ??s sectional final won 24-14 by Heritage Hills.

The two Class 2A battles are:

â?¢ Sectional 27: No. 8 Churubusco at No. 1 Cass. Does any No. 1 have a tougher route than Cass, which had to beat No. 4 Heritage (21-14) in the opener then survive Harding (15-8 in OT) to earn a berth vs. No. 8?

â?¢ Sectional 30: No. 13 Western Boone at No. 10 Speedway. A rematch of last yearâ??s sectional championship won 24-7 by Speedway.

The biggies in little olâ?? Class A are:

â?¢ Sectional 33: No. 4 Whiting at No. 6 West Central. This — quite possibly the stateâ??s best sectional championship matchup â??? is a rematch of last yearâ??s sectional final war won 14-13 by West Central.

â?¢ Sectional 35: No 10 Lafayette Central Catholic at No. 1 Pioneer. Sagarinâ??s fifth-best Class A team travels to its best in a rematch of the season opener won 27-13 by Pioneer.

Observations from a weary football watcher

My Mike McGraw

Executive Director

I have followed so much football in the last two weeks that I am starting to hear snap counts in my sleep. I suppose that is better than seeing blitzes from Penn linebackers. I am too old to take the punishment.

Here are my observations after the first two rounds of the tourney:

Football is not a sport that is given to large numbers of upsets, but even at that there have been surprisingly few shockers. Through the first two rounds of the 2005 tournament, there have only been two upsets of real magnitude. Those are Class 4A Seymourâ??s defeat of Columbus East in the opening round, and Friday nightâ??s 5A victory by Elkhart Memorial over LaPorte. With those exceptions, things have pretty much played out to form.

That should indicate some great battles in the upcoming weeks.

Despite the lack of upsets, change is on the horizon. Of last yearâ??s 10 visitors to the RCA Dome, four have already made exits this year — and we are assured of a brand-new matchup in Class A. Of the six remaining, two face stern tests this coming week. Class 4A defending champion Roncalli is an underdog at home to Indianapolis Cathedral, and 3A Heritage Hills will get all it wants from Evansville Mater Dei.

In 5A, Avon has looked very strong in the first two rounds, while Fort Wayne Snider has been impressive in doing what the Kingsmen always do, which is win. By the way, when the sectional dust clears, some team up north named Penn will have survived another challenge to its long dominance.

Class A may be the class to provide the most entertainment in the coming rounds. Literally none of the elites has really been tested with the exception of Whiting, and the Oilers came through. I know, I know — Linton went down. But it was at the hands of Perry Central and, besides, Linton always gets beat.

One thing has become crystal clear. The Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference does not get nearly the respect that it deserves. Four of the six EIAC teams are still alive, and the two that have been beaten fell at the hands of other conference members. Three of the four EIAC schools remaining should be favored to win sectionals — in three separate classes, by the way — and the only reason South Dearborn isnâ??t favored is that they face conference foe East Central.

We all spend a lot of time talking about the power of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC) in Class 5A, but nobody notices the guys from southeastern Indiana.

OK, I am going back to sleep now. I think I was calling an audible, and I want to see how it turned out.

Class 4A: No. 9 Greenwood rolls to 45-zip halftime lead in dismantling Owen Valley, 66-14

By Bubba Harnist

Staff Writer

GREENWOOD â??? Going into the Class 4A Sectional 14 semifinal Oct. 28, the records of the Greenwood Woodmen and Owen Valley Patriots were nearly identical. Take a closer look at the schedules, though, and you see that Owen Valley (8-1) played only one 4A team all year — lost.

That team, Northview, is the same team that Greenwood (9-1) eliminated in the first round of sectionals last week.

When it was all said and done Greenwood dominated the Patriots from start to finish in route to a 66-14 thumping of Owen Valley. It was a game of records for the Woodmen: The 66 points they scored is a new school record, and the nine extra points by sophomore kicker Javi Ruibal is also a new school record.

Greenwood got the ball first and wasted no time putting points on the board. On the second play from scrimmage, senior Lucas Lipp ran 53 yards to the end zone for a very quick 7-0 lead. After a modest drive by the Patriots, the Woodmen got the ball back and again went to work. On the fifth play of the drive, sophomore Brad Shirrell scored from nine yards out, giving Greenwood a 14-0 lead just 4:27 into the game.

After an interception by sophomore Dylan Moore gave Greenwood the ball back, it took only two plays for the Woodmen to score again. This time senior quarterback Jeff Geoghegan hooked up with tight end A.J. Edds for a 55-yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave Greenwood a 21-0 lead, and there was still 5:26 left in the first quarter.

After a punt by the Patriots, Greenwood made it four touchdowns on its first four possessions when Lipp scored his second touchdown of the night on a two-yard run. At this point, itâ??s safe to say the Woodmen were on a roll, and that roll continued when junior Nick Baughman intercepted a pass from Owen Valley quarterback Jared Maners.

On the ensuing possession, the offense made it 5-for-5 when Geoghegan hooked up with Edds again for a touchdown. This time it was a 24-yard pass on the driveâ??s fifth play. The extra point made it 35-0. Edds, the senior tight end and linebacker who is committed to Iowa for next year, said Geoghegan makes it easy for him.

â??Itâ??s not much work for me — they are just great throws, all I have to do is catch the ball,â? Edds said. â??Itâ??s like pitch and catch.

â??He (Geoghegan) is very accurate when he passes, and he is also a great runner.â?

After a turnover on downs by Owen Valley, you guessed it — the Woodmen made it 6-for-6 when they went 65 yards on six plays covering 2:02. The drive ended when Lipp scored his third touchdown of the game on a one-yard run that gave Greenwood a 42-0 lead.

Still, Greenwood wasnâ??t done. A punt by Owen Valley left Greenwood enough time to conduct its seventh offensive drive of the half. While the drive didnâ??t result in a touchdown, it still netted the Woodmen some points. A 28-yard field goal by Ruibal made it 45-0 at the intermission.

The second half had little anticipation as the game was well in hand for the Woodmen. Greenwood was finally stopped by the Patriots defense on their first drive of the second half giving Owen Valley decent field position to work with. The Patriots took advantage, going 53 yards on eight plays. The drive ended when Maners scored on a seven-yard touchdown run. The extra point made it 45-7.

After an onside kick by Owen Valley failed, Greenwoodâ??s offense got back on track, going 50 yards on five plays covering 3:29. The drive ended when junior Nick Baughman scored on a 19-yard touchdown run. The extra point made it 52-7. All that remained for Greenwood was avoiding injuries and giving reserves some playing time.

Owen Valley scored on its second straight possession when they traveled 67 yards on nine plays covering 1:44. The drive ended when Casey Bybee scored on a five-yard touchdown run. Greenwood refused to let down, though, scoring on its next possession on a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore Joey Boyd to make it 59-14. Greenwoodâ??s final touchdown of the game came with 6:24 left when Boyd scored his second TD, this time on a 45-yard run.

Greenwood coach Rick Wimmer, understandably, was happy with his offense.

â??I thought the offense played well,â? Wimmer said. â??The offensive line was great up front, and we were able to get all of our offensive weapons involved.â?

Lipp concurred with his coach.

â??They have pretty good size and work hard,â? Lipp said, â??They opened the holes for me and made it easy.â?

Edds, meanwhile, was pleased with the defense.

â??I thought we played great.â? Edds said. â??They are a good offense and I thought it was a testament to our defense that we played so well. We brought our â??Aâ?? game tonight.â?

Wimmer credited a total team effort, noting the Woodmen were missing several players and had some young kids who performed well. The guys Wimmer was referring to were the four starters for the Woodmen who missed this game with various injuries. Two of the injuries hit the offensive line, while another one hit the offensive line.

The good news for Wimmer, though, is that all four starters are expected back next week for the sectional finals.

With the win, Greenwood moves on to the sectional finals for the third straight year. This year though, they will have a different opponent. After having faced the Mooresville Pioneers the last two years in the sectional finals and losing both times, the Woodmen will instead host the Whiteland Warriors next week. The Warriors knocked off Mooresville in the sectional semi-finals by a score of 35-28 in overtime.

Greenwood is in search of its first sectional title since the 1992 season. These two teams faced off earlier this year in a Mid State Conference battle at Whiteland with Greenwood winning by a score of 48-14. That may not mean much though seeing as Mooresville beat Whiteland 59-14 in the regular season, but lost to them in the sectional semis.

â??They are a much different challenge for us,â? Wimmer said. â??They play physical up front and have good team speed.

â??Each week you will play a better team and we have to get better also.â?

With the sectional title in sight, the Woodmen appear ready, but also know there is work to be done.

â??We have to get better this week and improve,â? Lipp said. â??Whiteland is good, but weâ??ll be ready.â?

Added Edds: â??Whiteland is going to be confident because they have won three in a row. We canâ??t look past them — we have to have a good week of practice and get better.â?

Times have changed with the Greenwood football program. Despite no sectional titles since 1992, just getting to the finals isnâ??t enough for this team.

â??Itâ??s good, but itâ??s not where we want to end — thatâ??s not good enough,â? Edds said. â??We donâ??t want to stop there.

â??Everyone has higher goals. We just want to keep winning games.â?
