Preview (Part 3): Relays will be critical in team scoring race

By Brandon
Jones
Staff Writer

Get the
stick through the zone and around the track! The 2006 edition of the 4 x 100, 4
x 400, and 4 x 800 meter relays may be the most exciting it has been in years.

Why, you
ask? Because, in large part, 2005â??s top teams return a lot of talent and will
make for some blazing times, especially in the short relays.

Also, the
team race can be won or lost during relay events â??? just ask Fort Wayne Northropâ??s 4 x 100
team. They had an excellent chance of scoring in this event at the state meet, but the Bruins
stumbled to a third-place team finish due to poor baton handling. Had
that 4 x 100 relay team qualified, who knows? Maybe weâ??d be talking about a
Northrop state championship (they finished only 8.5 points behind Lawrence
Central).

4 x 100 meter relay
Fort Wayne
Wayne, the defending state champions in this event, HAVE to be the favorite.
The Generals have back three of the four runners that composed that relay squad.
Plus, they have a wild card named Marcus Grayson in their back pocket. Grayson
is a top-notch sprinter whose 2005 season ended early when he was forced out
with an injury.

Warren
Central returns all four members from last seasonâ??s 4 x 100 team that finished fourth.
The Warriors are more experienced this time around and will vow to take home
the blue. They just may do so as we all know the importance of having a
cohesive unit on the track for this event.

Fort Wayne
Northrop is another team returning experience. The Bruins return five of their
six relay members this time around, and theyâ??ll be running with a chip on their
collective shoulders as they want to prove last spring was a fluke.

Jonesâ?? Top

Carmel

With very
few exceptions, this event is dominated year-in and year-out by Indianapolis and Fort
Wayne schools. Expect 2006 to be no different. Why Carmel, you ask? The
Greyhounds, though known for their distance prowess, return all four members
from a very fast team.

4 x 400 meter relay
Fort Wayne Northrop HAS to win this one if
the Bruins are going to have any shot in the team race. The defending state champions
in this event return three of four legs, including speedster Scott Wims, who put
on his Superman cape last season in leading them to the win. Yes, 3:16 is an impressive
time, and they could go even faster
this time around if the weather cooperates.

Notice a
pattern here? Warren Central once again returns all four members of a team that
placed fourth in this event last season. The Warriors will give Northrop and
the others all they can handle.

Ben Davis had
this race won last season until the final leg. Expect the Giants, always tough
in this event, to be hungry this time out. They return three of four members
from last yearâ??s runner-up team.

Speaking
of hungry, Pike also will be. The Red Devils return three members from last
seasonâ??s squad that was surrounded by controversy. They, like the Northrop 4 x 100
squad, will be running with a chip on their shoulder.

4 x 800 meter relay
For the
first time in years, this race is EXTREMELY wide open. Perennial powerhouses Carmel and Lawrence North
have suffered graduation losses. Sparing you the â??they always reloadâ? story, I
will move on to others whom I believe will be in the mix.

But let me
just say it anyway: DO NOT COUNT OUT THE â??HOUNDS AND THE WILDCATS!

Another Central Indiana mid-distance powerhouse is my pick to
take home the blue. Brebeuf has a history in this event and returns three of
four members from last seasonâ??s third-place team. Yes, the one member they lost
was a VERY important one in Trent Morton, but I believe that the Braves have
what it takes to fill the spot and reach the top.

Several
other teams have a chance at this one, so just because your team is not on this
list does not mean they donâ??t have a shot.

FW South moves into Summit tie for first despite injury to Hairston with 74-64 win at Concordia

By Colin Altevogt
Staff Writer

FORT
WAYNE â??? The band played songs from the
movie Rocky, the students chanted â??scorrrrrrre-boarrrrrd,â?
and one fan was even seen doing â??the wormâ? to pump up the crowd before the
game. In other words, the hyped atmosphere Jan. 27 epitomized everything a high
school basketball game should be.

With the packed crowd living and dying off every play, Summit
Athletic Conference co-leader Fort Wayne South pulled away from host For Wayne Concordia
Lutheran in the fourth quarter to win, 74-64. The victory keeps the talented
Archers in a tie for first place with Fort Wayne North, which had defeated
South the week before.

Concordia fed off the early excitement from the home crowd.
Stepping up in the absence of injured guard Jason Doerffler, starting guard
Austin Thoms scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Cadets took a 21-14
lead after one.

The Archersâ?? aggressive play hurt them early on as Concordia was
in the bonus just a minute into the second quarter. The Cadets, however,
couldnâ??t take advantage of Southâ??s foul trouble, shooting just 2 of 6 from the
stripe in the second period.

South took advantage of its opponentâ??s offensive woes, holding
the Cadets scoreless for 3:25 during a 13-0 run in the second quarter. But Concordia
bounced back, scoring seven points in the last minute of the half, including a
pair of 3-pointers by bench player Clayton Pusey.

South led 34-33 at intermission, but Concordia had momentum
after Puseyâ??s buzzer-beating three dropped in.

Concordia forward Dan Hartman scored 39 seconds into the third
quarter, regaining the lead for the Cadets. Southâ??s Fred Ford then answered
with a basket on the next possession. And while the Cadets repeatedly cut the
deficit back to a point throughout the second half, they never led again.

When Concordia threatened, the Archers fed the ball into their
leader, junior forward Justin Hairston. The former Fort Wayne Snider starter whoâ??s
committed to Western
Michigan University
scored 16 in the first three quarters before going down with an apparent ankle
injury.

Hairston limped to the locker room under the assistance of team
trainers with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter and the score 51-49 in favor
of South. Yet despite their hobbled star going MIA, the Archers scored the
first six points of the final quarter, stretching its two-point lead to eight.

Concordia senior Justin Goeglein finally scored on a drive,
ending a four-and-a-half minute Cadet drought. But South, playing with a
moderate-sized lead, was content to hold the ball at halfcourt until pressured.

South ran more than a minute off the clock on three different
occasions in the last 10 minutes of play, inciting chants of â??play the game!â?
from the Concordia student section.

With their best player out for the game, the Archers turned to their
secondary standout, Ford. Though he scored just four points, the guardâ??s
evasive dribbling and patient execution of the offense drained gobs of time off
the clock.

Cadet sharpshooter Thoms was able to nail another pair of shots
from behind the arc in the last minute, but Concordia could not draw close
enough to make a run as South was a perfect 7 of 7 from the line in the final
period.

With the victory, South (9-5 overall) moves to 5-1 in the
conference and now will be rooting for their fallen foe. Concordia (8-5, 4-3) plays
North on Feb. 4, and a Cadet win could help the Archers win the conference
title outright.

Huge second half propels 3A No. 8 Batesville past previously perfect Class A Hauser, 86-68

By Brandon
Jones
Staff Writer

BATESVILLE â??? It was not David versus Goliath. But Class A Hauser against 3A Franklin County power Batesville sure felt like
something similar Jan. 27.

Dressing
nine varsity players to the Bulldogsâ?? full squad of 12, the No. 1-ranked visiting
Jets knew they were in for a night where theyâ??d have to play four quarters of
perfect basketball to keep their dream of a perfect season alive.

Well, they
played twoquarters of perfect
basketball â?¦ then the roof caved in.

Using an
amazing third quarter in which it nearly matched its first-half total,
Batesville (11-1) overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and cruised home to
an 86-68 win over Hauser (13-1).

Hauser big
man Bobby Joliff came out with a vengeance to start the game. The 6â??8â? senior
blocked Batesvilleâ??s first three shot attempts, and his teammates cashed in at
the other end as Hauser came out firing on all cylinders. Joliff had seven
opening-quarter points to go along with those three blocks, but he was forced
to leave the contest with a bleeding cut on his right arm.

Thatâ??s
when Batesville attacked. Behind six points from sophomore Alex Grimsley, the
Bulldogs clawed their way back into the contest. Batesville even took the lead
before Hauser rattled off the final five points of the period, the last three
coming on a Bryce Mize bomb at the buzzer that put tiny Hauser in front, 16-15,
through one quarter of play.

Hauser
began the second quarter very aggressively on the defensive end, and that put
Batesville into the bonus just 1:01 into the quarter. The worst part of that
foulfest for the Jets was that Joliff picked up his second foul. Not wanting to
risk his standout committing another, Hauser coach Bob Nobbe sat Joliff for the
remainder of the half with 5:26 to go.

The Jets,
however, were not phased. The 1-2-3 punch of guards Mize, Gabe Miller, and Zach
Fugate picked up the slack, scoring 19 of Hauserâ??s 23 points in the period.

The trioâ??s
effort on the defensive end, however, may have been equally impressive. The Hauser
triple threat played a tenacious style of defense that frustrated the younger
Batesville guards, resulting in many forced 3-point attempts that went awry.

Hauser
went into the locker room with a 39-32 advantage. But someone must have
forgotten to tell the Jets that in order to win a basketball game, it takes
four quarters of solid play.

Coming out
of the locker room, Batesville stole the momentum the Jets once had and ran
with it â?¦ literally. Behind his fast-breaking offense that went end-to-end,
Batesville coach Melvin Siefertâ??s goal was clear:

Run, run,
and run some more.

And it
worked. Not only did it show progress on the scoreboard, but in the free throw
department as well. Batesville outscored Hauser, 16-7, over the first four minutes
of the period and took its first lead since late in the first quarter at 48-46.
Grimsley and Chris Salatin each had eight points in the quarter to lead the way.

Adding
insult to Hauserâ??s injury, Joliff committed not only his third foul but also
his fourth midway through the quarter, and just 28 seconds apart.

Hauser
looked lost on both ends as Batesville ended the period with a 15-8 run. In
all, Batesville scored 31 points in the third quarter to Hauserâ??s 14, and what
once was a seven-point hole turned into a 10-point lead.

The fourth
quarter began â?¦ and ended right away. Joliff came back in but fouled out at
7:22, ending all hopes of a Hauser comeback. The senior finished with a mere
nine points, with just two coming after the opening period.

The rout
was on as Batesville continued to run the undermanned Jets into the ground, stretching
the lead to as many as 20 before the final margin of 18.

Grimsley
paced the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Salatin added 16 and Derek Foster 14.

For
Hauser, Miller led the way with 18 points, while Zach Fugate added 16.

advance to the individual regionals Feb. 4 at 16 sites. The process repeats
itself the following week (team semistates Feb. 8 at eight sites, individual
semistates Feb. 11 at four sites), with the individual state finals set for
Feb. 17-18 at Conseco Fieldhouse and the eight-school team state finals Feb. 25
