20. LAWRENCE CENTRAL SECTIONAL

LAWRENCE â??? Tenth-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral parlayed eight top-two
finishes into a team victory over No. 14 North Central (Indianapolis), which crowned four champions
but managed only one runner-up finish. Both schools advance to the team
regional Feb. 1 at North Central.

The Irish advanced
12 of their 14 wrestlers to the individual regional Feb. 4 at Pendleton Heights,
totaling 272.5 points to outduel North Central (11 advancing wrestlers) by
eight points. Host Lawrence Central (228) finished third, while two-time
defending state champion Lawrence North (224.5) placed fourth.

Strangely,
LN won four of the first five championship matches en route to a meet-high five
individual crowns. Freshman Casheâ?? Quiroga got things started with a fall at
103 before classmate Dâ??Marcus Spencer won 8-6 at 112. Senior Tim Brown captured
a 10-8 decision at 125 prior to sophomore Qwion Bookerâ??s 5-3 decision at 130.
Senior Ryan Vogelsong then brought hom the Wildcatsâ?? fifth title with a fall at
171.

But this
day was about the Cathedral-North Central showdown. The Irish built a sizeable
lead prior to the finals, then held on despite Panther victories in the final
three matches. Cathedralâ??s champions were Calvin Sullivan (119), No. 18 Gavin
McGinley (140), and No. 13 Johnny Schmaltz (160). North Central, meanwhile, got
wins from No. 2 Blake Kenny (135), No. 5 Luke Watkins (189), Justin Kuhn (215),
and No. 6 Josh Goldsberry (heavyweight)

Kennyâ??s 3-2
finals victory over Cathedralâ??s No. 5 Dedrick Harrison, a
reversal of last yearâ??s sectional championship battle between the two,
was easily the
match of that day. A lot of â??supportingâ? takedown points (where parts of a
wrestlerâ??s body are outside the circle) were not called â???
there were several complaints throughout the day of inconsistent refereeing â???
so the score remained low.

â??Weâ??ve just gotta run our offense better and start
earlier, said sixth-year Cathedral coach Sean McGinley, an uncle to Gavin and
bearer of a famous last name in Irish wrestling. â??They wrestled four times last
year and (how this match went) was exactly what we thought.

â??The big thing is we placed 14 guys (among the top
six). We needed the place winners â??? the thirds, the fifths. We got a huge win
by heavyweight Max Davis in the first round, and if he doesnâ??t win that I donâ??t
know if we could have done it.

The unseeded Davis, a sophomore who ended up with
one of those key fifth-place finishes McGinley referred to, upset No. 2 seed
Josh Cleary of Scecina, 9-5.

22. SHELBYVILLE SECTIONAL
SHELBYVILLE
â??? Two Top 20 teams duked it out, and 12th-ranked Warren Central
narrowly defeated No. 16 New Palestine, 233-232, to capture the team title.
Both teams will advance to the Beech Grove Regional.
New Palestine held a slight
216-212 advantage going into the finals, but the Warriors won four of the first
eight weight classes to surge ahead. The Dragons were able to win three of the
final six matchups, but it wasnâ??t enough as Warren Central held on â??? barely â???
for victory.
Fifth-ranked
Bruce Lloyd handed Shelbyvilleâ??s eighth-ranked Justen Lock his first loss of
the season in the 103-pound class to get the ball rolling for the Warriors in
the finals. Fourth-ranked Chris Conte (125) and No. 9 Josh Norris (130) then notched
back-to-back victories before Carl Griffin won Warren Centralâ??s fourth and
final title at 145.
New Palestine began to answer
when Steve Nichols and second-ranked Jesse Walley won back-to-back at 152 and
160, respectively. After Jordan Wagner defeated Triton Centralâ??s Matt Sullivan
at 189, it was up to New Palâ??s Joe Napariu to upset third-ranked Andrew
Quintana of Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the heavyweight battle.
But the title dream ended quickly as Quintana pinned Napariu in just 26 seconds.
Beech
Groveâ??s Danny Coyne (ranked No. 3 at 112) led a strong showing by the
third-place Hornets, who also notched victories by top-ranked Ethan Harris
(119) and No. 15 Eddie Mobley (215).

SECTIONALS: Avon Semistate

Staff Report

Following are reports from the four wrestling sectionals
â??? Avon, Mooresville, Northview, Jennings
County â??? that feed into the team
semistate at Avon.

The top two sectional teams move on to the team
regionals Feb. 1 at 16 sites, while the top four wrestlers in each weight class
advance to the individual regionals Feb. 4 at 16 sites. The process repeats
itself the following week (team semistates Feb. 8 at eight sites, individual
semistates Feb. 11 at four sites), with the individual state finals set for
Feb. 17-18 at Conseco Fieldhouse and the eight-school team state finals Feb. 25
at Center Grove.

Individual
and team results from Jan. 28:

25. AVON
SECTIONAL

How the
mighty have fallen. Formerly Top 10-ranked Avon suffered graduation losses from
its defending state runner-up squad, and Hendricks
County rival Plainfield capitalized as the Quakers
defeated the Orioles, 260-241, for the Avon Sectional crown.

Both teams
advance to the team regionals Wednesday at Avon.

Although
the runner-up Orioles did not hang their heads too low, one could easily tell
that this was BIG for the Quakers, who won matches at four weight classes to
match Avonâ??s four individual champions.

Thanks to Brandon Jones for this report.

Columbus North puts 3 in double figures in 71-53 Conference Indiana drilling of Franklin Central

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Heading into its Jan. 28 Conference Indiana showdown at Franklin Central, Class
4A No. 10 Columbus North was in a bit of a tailspin. The Bull Dogs had lost two
games in a row and three of four, this after having won 12 straight.

The
tailspin seems to be in the rearview mirror now following a convincing 71-53
win over a tough Flashes team.

â??Itâ??s been
a rough last couple of weeks for us,â? said Columbus North coach Debbie Marr. â??We
know we can play better than we have been playing.

â??The loss
to Madison (65-60
on the road two days earlier) was a real wake-up call for us.

Columbus
North started the game strong with a 5-0 run trigged by defense â??? the Bull Dogs
forced Franklin Central to turn the ball over on two of its first three
possessions. In fact, both teams were sloppy in the beginning, with the Flashes
committing four turnovers in the first five minutes compared with six for
Columbus North.

The first
quarter ultimately belonged to Columbus North senior Stacie Brown. Brown scored
12 straight points for the Bull Dogs on three 3-pointers and a three-point
play. After one quarter, Columbus North was up, 21-16.

The second
quarter was all about runs. Columbus North started the quarter with a basket
from junior Brittany Bowen en route to a 7-0 run, stretching the Bull Dogsâ??
lead to 30-16 with 5:49 left. Again, it was the defense making things happen as
North forced the Flashes into turnovers on their first 3 possessions.

Franklin
Central didnâ??t get its first points of the second stanza until a free throw by
senior Katie Dewey with 5:35 left. That started a 5-0 run by the Flashes, who
were able to cut the lead to 30-21 with 4:00 to go.

Columbus
North responded with another 7-0 run that stretched its lead to 16 with 2:45
left in the half before FC senior Nevada Carr ended the run with a free throw
with 1:34 left. A couple baskets by junior Nicole James allowed the Flashes to
end the half on an 8-0 run, cutting the Bull Dogsâ?? halftime lead to 37-29.

With the Bull
Dogs struggling like they had been the last few games, one had to wonder how
they would respond in the second half. The answer? Nicely.

A basket
from Bowen 30 seconds into the half got Columbus North going, but that was the
extent of the scoring between the two teams for the first four minutes of the
quarter.

The next
basket didnâ??t come until the 3:59 mark, when the Bull Dogs got another bucket
from Bowen to stretch their lead to 41-29. Those two baskets by Bowen were the
key to a 7-0 run Columbus North used to start the quarter.

Franklin
Central didnâ??t get its first basket till 2:33 remained when senior Katie Dewey
hit a 3-pointer. Columbus North dominated the third quarter, outscoring
Franklin Central 14-5 en route to a comfortable 17-point lead after three,
51-34.

The
Flashes refused to give up, though. A free throw by Bowen started a 6-0 run
that was fueled by a 3-pointer from Dewey, and the Flashes began to press,
forcing two straight turnovers. But the FC glimmer of hope would soon
disappear.

Columbus
North began to figure out the press and got easy baskets in addition to forcing
turnovers on the defensive end, and the closest Franklin Central would get the
rest of the way was 14 points.

Marr
thought defense was the key to the game.

â??They like
to shoot the three,â? she said. â??We were trying to contain their 3-point
shooting, which we did because we were able to contain the guards and get a
hand in their face.

â??Getting off
to the quick start also helped us a lot.

The win
moves Columbus North (14-4 overall, 6-3 Conference Indiana) into sole possession of third place
in the conference after entering the day tied with Franklin Central (14-6, 5-4).

Deweyâ??s 16
points paced the Flashes, who had two other double-figure scorers in Katie
Hacker (12 points) and James (10).

Brown led the
way for the Bull Dogs with a game-high 24 points. Bowen (19 points) and Desiree
Mumphrey (12) also reached double figures for North.

Marr noted
that putting three players in double figures was a good sign.

â??They play
aggressive defense â??? we wanted to take care of the ball and limit turnovers,â?
she said. â??We moved without the ball and ran the offense the way we are supposed
to.

â??We have a
number of people capable of scoring, and today some people stepped up.

Both teams
are back in action Jan. 31. Franklin Central hosts conference foe Lawrence
North, while Columbus North travels to Whiteland.

With
sectionals just 10 days away, Marr and the Bull Dogs seem to have regained some
of their mojo.

â??We feel
confident,â? she said. â??The three losses shook us up, but it taught us we have
to come ready everyday.

â??We canâ??t
just step on the floor â??? we have to be ready to play.â?

Slow start dooms 3A No. 13 FW Concordia in key 63-55 Summit loss to 4A No. 13 FW South

By Colin Altevogt
Staff Writer

FORT WAYNE â??? Fort Wayne
Concordia Lutheran was cold early Jan. 27, and that icy spell ultimately cost
the Class 3A No. 13 Cadets
dearly.

In a matchup of perhaps the top two players in the Summit
Athletic Conference, Fort Wayne South forward Sha’la Jackson got the better of
her Concordia counterpart, Miami of Ohio recruit Chanell Ridley. South rolled to
a 63-55 victory to remain a game back of unbeaten Fort Wayne Luers in the
conference standings.

Class 4A No. 13 South (16-2 overall, 7-1 SAC) is now looking for
a miracle over the next week. The Archers, whose only two losses all season
have come at the hands of Luers, need a loss by the 3A No. 11 Knights (15-4,
7-0) against either Fort Wayne Elmhurst or Fort Wayne Wayne, two teams with a
combined regular-season conference record of 3-11.

While Ridley, like her Cadet team, was off in the opening stages
of the game, Jackson
could not miss: the 5â??9â? junior scored 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting in the
first half. At times, the Archer star seemed unstoppable. She scored in
transition, created her own shots, and nailed jumpers with hands in her face.

With the Cadets down eight, point guard Angel Fincher nailed a
three with 1:18 remaining in the opening quarter. Fincher, one of the
conferenceâ??s best defenders, pressed South guard Marceya Mingo the length of
the court, at times frustrating the Archersâ?? other junior standout.

South led by five after a quarter, but Concordia (13-4) scored
eight unanswered to start the second. A free throw by South center Demetria
Eley ended a five-minute Archer drought before the Cadets got two more points
on a pair of free throws by sophomore Alissa Goeglein, extending the run to
13-1.

Then Jackson
went to work. With her team trailing by four, she knocked down two quick
jumpers in a span of 13 seconds, tying the game. Jacksonâ??s play sparked a 17-5 South run,and
the Archers threatened to pull away at the end of the first half.

Concordiaâ??s Sara Thieme scored on a fast break with under a
minute remaining in the half, though, ending a 2:30 Cadet drought. But Mingo
scored on a fancy layup on the other end, stretching the lead back to eight
points.

With the clock winding down, Goeglein sank a big three. It was
the only attempt from behind the arc for the normally prolific outside shooter,
and despite the Cadetsâ?? troubles handling Southâ??s full-court trap, they trailed
by only five at the break.

Eley picked up two quick fouls in the first minute of the second
half, saddling her with four. The Cadets, however, could not take advantage of
the lack of inside presence.

Concordia repeatedly cut the lead to a single point, even tying
on one occasion, but would not lead for the rest of the night. South led 44-41
at the end of the penultimate quarter and would not look back from there.

Jackson
put back her own miss to start the fourth. The Cadets, meanwhile, could not
hold onto the ball to begin the quarter, leading to a pair of quick baskets for
South. Forty-five seconds into the final period, the previous three-point gap
had been extended to nine.

With four minutes left, Mingo stole an errant pass and flipped
it ahead to Zaquana Braden for an easy two. The play pushed the South lead into
double digits, and the Archers cruised from there.

Jackson
finished with 23 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field. Braden and Mingo
scored 16 and 15, respectively, for the Archers. Ridley put in 17 for the
Cadets, who fall to 6-2 in the standings.

Colinâ??s
end-of-the-season notes

Obviously, I do not have a ballot for all-conference teams. With
only one game left in the girls regular season, however, I feel it is time for
end-of-the-season awards of sorts. Here are the picks from myself and my â??company

Phillips' alley-oop bucket at :16.0 lifts Brebeuf to 54-52 upset of 3A No. 3 Chatard

By Adam
Rouse
Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? With the game on the line, the unranked
Brebeuf Braves went to their bread-and-butter play Jan. 27 against Class 3A No.
3 Indianapolis Chatard. And 6â??6â? junior Taâ??Shia Phillips came through as she
received a perfectly thrown lob and dipped in for a layup to give host Brebeuf a
54-52 lead with 16 seconds to go.

The Braves
held on for the victory to notch their biggest win of the season in improving
to 11-9, sending the 16-win Trojans home with just their third loss of the
season.

Phillips
was fouled on the go-ahead basket but missed the free throw, giving Chatard a
chance to tie or go for the win. After crossing halfcourt, the Trojans called
timeout to set up their final play with 9.9 seconds left on the clock.

Senior
guard Jennifer Seeber, who was 3 of 5 from the field in the second half, took a
jumper from the left wing, but the attempt was blocked by Brebeuf sophomore
Caroline Schutzman and went out of bounds. Chatard retained possession with 2.4
seconds remaining but didnâ??t get another shot at the basket as the Trojans
threw the ball away on the inbounds pass.

Phillips
turned in another all-star performance as she led all scorers with 24 points
while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. The junior center was efficient from
the field, going 11 of 19 despite sitting on the bench almost half the final
period due to foul trouble.

With the
Braves leading 38-31 in the third quarter, Phillips was whistled for her fourth
foul with 1:52 left and had to go to the bench. Chatard took advantage and was
able to open up its offense without a dominating presence standing in the
middle of the lane, trimming the deficit to 42-39 early on in the fourth on a 3-pointer
from Seeber.

Behind a
pair of baskets from sophomore Ivie Obeime, Brebeuf beefed up its lead back up
to 46-39 with 5:14 left in the game. With Phillips still sitting on the bench, however,
Chatard was able to continue to climb closer.

Sophomore
Anne Boese hit back-to-back threes to bring the Trojans within one at 46-45
with 4:07 to go. That was enough for Brebeuf coach Kendall Kreinhagen to send
Phillips back into the contest.

The move
brought immediate dividends as Phillips scored quickly to give the Braves a
48-45 advantage. But Brebeuf missed some opportunities late to possibly ice the
game when Phillips and senior Sally Fischer each missed one of two free throws
inside the final three minutes.

Trailing
50-47 with 2:16 left, Chatard attempted one of its 30 foot-plus 3-pointers and
connected as junior Kelly Gardner tied the game at 50. The Trojans certainly
lived and died by the three-point shot, and that was never more evident than in
the first period.

Coming out
against Brebeufâ??s zone defense, Chatardâ??s plan was to beat the Braves from long
distance. Nine of the Trojansâ?? 11 first-quarter shots came from three-point
land but only two connected, and Chatard trailed 11-6 after one.

The trend
continued in the second as 16 of the first 17 shots from the Trojans came from
trifecta land. The visitors finally took (and made) consecutive two-point
attempts when Phillips left the game late in the second quarter.

Gardner led three Trojans in double
figures with 16 points, followed by 15 from Boese and Seeberâ??s 13.
