Preview: Bubba does baseball

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

Our Bubba Harnist spent the last
few springs coaching the junior varsity baseball team at Franklin Central. But
with a baby girl and the 24/7 requirement that is scanning the police blotter
for the latest outlaw maneuver by his cherished Cincinnati Bengals, Bubba was forced to dump
the coaching gig.

He thought weâ??d give him a chance
to get back in the game by previewing the upcoming baseball state tournament.
Hereâ??s his insight â?¦

Itâ??s a
saying you hear often, maybe too often: â??Itâ??s the best time of the year!â?

Some would
argue the start of the NFL season or the start of the college basketball season,
or even the start of the winter and snow, is the best time of the year. I would
argue, though, that this really is
the best time of the year.

Memorial Day
to me always meant school was almost over, summer was set to begin, and I would
soon have three months of doing nothing but playing the great game of baseball
and enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

Here in Indiana, Memorial Day
means one other thing: the start of
the 41st Annual IHSAA Baseball
State Tournament Series
.
It begins May 28 and ends at beautiful Victory Field on June 15-16 when eight
teams will vie for a coveted baseball state championship.

Before we
break down this yearâ??s field in all four classes, letâ??s take a look back at the
state champs and runner-ups from each class over the last five years:

Class 4A
2006: Fort
Wayne Snider 4, Indianapolis Cathedral 2 (8 innings)
2005:
Brownsburg 6, Evansville
North 4
2004:
Lawrence Central 3, Brownsburg 1
2003:
McCutcheon 7, Brownsburg 1
2002: Munster 9, Evansville
North 1

Class 3A
2006:
Jasper 13, Norwell 13
2005:
Andrean 10, Evansville
Memorial 1
2004: New Palestine 3, Andrean 2
2003: Norwell
3, New Palestine 1 (8 innings)
2002: Vincennes Lincoln 4,
Bellmont 0

Class 2A
2006:
North Posey 8, Hammond
Noll 1
2005:
North Posey 11, Northwestern 6
2004: Hammond Noll 2, Wapahani
0
2003:
Triton Central 7, Frankton 4
2002: Manchester 9, Batesville 8

Class A
2006: Fort
Wayne Blackhawk Christian 7, Shakamak 4 (8 innings)
2005: Fort
Wayne Blackhawk Christian 7, Hauser 0
2004:
Lafayette Central Catholic 11, Shakamak 3
2003:
Tecumseh 7, Southwood 4
2002: Fort
Wayne Blackhawk Christian 7, Tecumseh 3

Now, on to
the 2007 field and what yours truly thinks as to how things will play out. Keep
in mind that these picks, just like my beloved Cincinnati Reds, are bound to go
wrong.

4A North
Itâ??s not been
a bad year for 4A North. A week before the tournament begins, Crown
Point
sits atop the big-school coachesâ?? poll, while Kokomo, Carroll (Fort Wayne),
Brownsburg, Homestead, and Munster are also in the Top 10.

There is
something about Brownsburg that scares folks â???
mainly pitcher
Drew Storen â??? but I am not sure this is the Bulldogsâ?? year. Personally, I like Kokomo. Riding the arm of
Bryce Robinson, Kokomo
appears to have what it will take to make it to Victory Field representing 4A
North.

Pick: Kokomo
Teams to
watch: Brownsburg, Crown Point, Carroll (Fort Wayne)

4A South
Some may
say itâ??s a down year for the south, but not me. Take Indianapolis Cathedral, a
team that was loaded a year ago. The Fighting Irish may not be as good this
year, but they are still very good. I have seen them play, and I think we will see
them at Victory Field for the second year in a row.

Cathedral,
though, will have a tough battle against Lawrence Central in the opener just to
get out of the sectional. In fact, I will go with LC if the Bears knock off the
Irish. Center Grove is ranked ahead of both schools, but I saw them earlier
this year and came away unimpressed.

Columbus
North has been outstanding this year, but again, Iâ??m not sure these Bull Dogs
can make it all the way.

Pick: Indianapolis Cathedral
Teams to
watch: Lawrence Central, Center Grove, Columbus
North, Carmel

4A final: Kokomo over Indianapolis
Cathedral

3A North
Call me
crazy, but 3A North will be tough for any team not named Norwell. I have two
words as to why Norwell will win 3A North: Jarrod Parker. To state the obvious,
this pitcher is special. He is the kind of kid who puts a team on his back and
takes them to the promise land.

Make no
mistake, though; his supporting cast is more than capable.

Pick:
Norwell
Teams to
watch: West Lafayette, Hammond Clark, Jay County

3A South
Itâ??s been
a very good year for 3A South in â??07. Look at Sectional 27 alone. New Palestine, Pendleton
Heights, and Yorktown
are all ranked in the 3A Top 10 coachesâ?? poll, so this is a sectional where
only the strong survive.

I am going
to go with Pendleton
Heights
here. Donâ??t,
however, sleep on Yorktown and Cal Bowling (he
of the perfect game in the Delaware County Tournament that we have archived
here on HoosierAuthority.com).

Batesville,
West Vigo, and Brebeuf are talented as well, and
they all could contend. Deep down south, Vincennes Lincoln should get a
stranglehold on the rest of the competition, although beating Jasper and
getting out of its sectional will be tough.

Pick: Pendleton Heights
Teams to
watch: West Vigo, Brebeuf, New Palestine, Yorktown, Batesville, Mt. Vernon
(Fortville)

3A final:
Norwell over Pendleton
Heights

2A North
The baseball
has been very good in the 2A ranks this year as well. When looking up north, look
no further than Northwestern, ranked first in the 2A coachesâ?? poll. The
pitching staff at Northfield
will give the Norsemen a chance, but itâ??s probably not enough. Boone Grove sits
at No. 2 in the coachesâ?? poll, but Northwestern has the balance to take care of
2A North.

Pick:
Northwestern
Teams to
watch: Boone Grove, Northfield,
Madison-Grant

2A South
Let the
debate begin. Who is going to come out of 2A South? South Ripley? Austin? Wapahani? Lawrenceburg?
Heritage Christian? North Putnam? Providence?
North Posey? Charlestown?

Sectional
46 alone will be tough with Charlestown, Providence, Eastern (Pekin),
and Austin. I
like North Putnam every time Jake Mullis takes the hill, but thatâ??s not going
to be every game. South Ripley is very good.

My
surprise pick, though, is Lawrenceburg. Solid all around but not well known to
the rest of the state, I will take the Tigers.

Pick: Lawrenceburg
Teams to
watch: A plethora (see above)

2A final:
Northwestern over Lawrenceburg

1A North
Fort Wayne
Blackhawk Christian has owned 1A North the last five years. The Braves have
been to the state finals three of the five years, winning the last two. I,
however, think this will be the first time since 2004 that Blackhawk wonâ??t be
representing 1A North at Victory Field.

Michigan
City Marquette sits atop the coachesâ?? poll, but I have a feeling the winner of
Sectional 51 will represent the north. To that end, give me Lafayette Central
Catholic, which should eventually oust the aforementioned Marquette.

Pick: LCC
Teams to
watch: Michigan City Marquette, Frontier, Tri-County

1A South
To me,
this is as wide open as any of the eight regions. Shakamak stands out to me,
but Covington
and Northeast Dubois have the talent to make a run. Digging even deeper, Lapel,
Jac-Cen-Del, and Hauser also could take charge.

In the
end, I am going with my rather large gut feeling: Shakamak.

Pick:
Shakamak
Teams to
watch: Northeast Dubois, Covington,
Jac-Cen-Del

1A final =
LCC over Shakamak

SECTIONAL 43: Top-ranked Scecina makes a statement with 12-0 drubbing of No. 3 Speedway

By Will Willems
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? It wasnâ??t supposed to be this
easy. Not in a matchup of two of the top three teams in Class 2A.

But behind
a dominating performance from senior pitcher Emily Wethington, No. 1 Indianapolis
Scecina made a statement May 23 in a 12-0 rout of third-ranked Speedway in the Sectional 43 final at
Brookside Park.

Wethington
pitched a three-hit shutout to stymie the Sparkplugs all afternoon. She struck
out 14.

Host Scecina
(27-1), playing as the away team, struck first in the top of the first inning
when Wethington hit an RBI single to drive in Theresa Weinzierl.

It proved
to be all the run support she would need. Wethington gave up a lead-off single
to start the first inning, but then retired the next eight batters via
strikeout to prove her dominance.

â??Emily had
a good day â??? there is no doubt about that,â? said Scecina coach Tom Moorman.
â??But we had other people hit the ball, too.â?

The game
was broke open in the second inning, when the Crusaders scored four unearned
runs thanks to three Speedway
errors on ground balls.

Wethington
said the focus was to take it one inning at a time, but that the big lead
definitely helped any jitters of being in the playoffs.

â??It helps
you relax a little,â? Wethington said. â??You donâ??t always need to make the
perfect pitch. I know thereâ??s a cushion there, but if they hit it I trust my
defense to back me up.

As the
game progressed, the only question would be the final score.

The
Crusaders made a statement to the Shenandoah Regional field (Scecinaâ??s next
stop) by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to put any thought of a Speedway comeback out of mind.

Wethington
said that Scecina, which defeated Heritage Christian 12-0 to earn a
championship berth, wants to be seen as a team that can beat you in multiple
ways.

â??We are a
very good-hitting team,â? she said. â??When we get good pitching and fielding,
weâ??re going to be tough to beat.â?

Scecina
also got help from junior Jamie Goss, who had three hits and drove in three
runs. Sophomore Jessi Wright added two RBIs.

Moorman
knows his team has the potential to go far in the state tournament.

â??We have a
great team â??? theyâ??re fun to coach,â? Moorman said. â??When Emily is in the circle,
she is going to throw the pitches where you call them.

â??So if we
lose, itâ??s on me.â?

Speedway coach Derek Doehrmann was at a
loss for his teamâ??s struggles Wednesday.

â??When you
play a great team, you’re not going to get many chances,â? Doehrmann said. â??We
thought if we could play our game, we could compete.

â??Clearly
we didn’t.â?

Kristi
Roth took the loss for Speedway
(24-4), which had posted 13-0 and 8-4 victories over Triton Central and Indian
Creek to reach the final.

STATE FINALS: Cathedral "blocks' Center Grove's path to state title

By Mike McGraw

Executive Director

GREENWOOD â??? Almost universally, people involved in Indiana girls high school volleyball will tell you that the best team in the state at blocking at the net is Indianapolis Cathedral. The assistant coach in charge of that facet of the game for the Fighting Irish is Rhonda Low.

When spring rolls around and the boys take the court, Low moves to the head coachâ??s chair. It should come as no surprise, then, that the top-ranked Irish boys were outstanding at blocking during their march to the IBVCA state championship May 26 at Center Grove. They were also relentless in attacking it.

Make no mistake. Cathedral earned every bit of this title. The Irish rolled to a 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 victory in the quarterfinals over a 10th-ranked Franklin team that has enjoyed its strongest season in years. They then had to dispose of highly regarded No. 4 Carmel in the semifinals before defeating second-ranked host Center Grove in the championship match.

In the title tilt, the Irish ran into a team that attacked the net every bit as hard as they did. The Center Grove tandem of Tyler Cartwright and Tony James may have been the hardest hitters in the tournament.

It made for a classic clash.

Time and time again, the Trojan tandem would set up a powerful **** only to have it blocked back into their faces. Conversely, every time Cathedral began to gain sustained momentum, Center Grove would respond with a wicked ****.

In the end, however, the immovable object prevailed over the irresistible force, 25-15, 25-23, and 25-16.

For Center Grove, the phrase â??live by the serve, die by the serveâ? would be accurate. The aforementioned Cartwright and James both have deadly serves, which caused Cathedral a great deal of trouble in Game 2. However, Center Grove also committed three service errors in the game that went a long way to determining the outcome.

The Trojans added to their own misery in Game 3 with five more service errors.

Cathedralâ??s semifinal victory over Carmel, meanwhile, was a classic example of simply wearing down an opponent.

The Greyhounds offered strong resistance in the first game, though they finally dropped a hard-fought 25-18 decision. In Game 2, the Irish jumped to a quick lead, but Carmel fought back behind the serve of talented Logan Blackburn to take a brief 5-4 lead. It would be the last gasp for a Greyhound squad that was simply overmatched at the net.

Cathedral went on a 12-1 run to make it 17-6, and Carmel would never recover. The Game 2 final was 25-11, and Game 3 was an equally impressive 25-12 victory.

It is certain that along with the memories of Cathedralâ??s net play, Carmel players will have nightmares about Irish libero Tommy Rouse. The diminutive Rouse was flawless throughout the match.

Hereâ??s the complete rundown from the 14th Indiana Boys Coaches Volleyball Association State Tournament:

No. 2 Center Grove 25-25-25, No. 7 Hebron 12-12-23

SECTIONAL 1: The dynasty goes down as 4A No. 8 Munster snaps No. 11 Lake Central’s sectional streak at six

By Steve Hanlon
nwitimes.com

HIGHLAND â??? After two days, 19 innings, and a heart-wrenching 2-1 loss to Lake
Central in last year’s sectional semifinal, Munster third baseman
Hallie Gibbs just hung her head in despair. She wasn’t alone. The
Mustangs patiently waited for another chance.

On May 25 at the
Class 4A Highland Sectional, it came. But in a scoreless bottom of the
fifth, the Syracuse-bound Gibbs committed two errors, the biggest
coming with two outs when Jen Kosinski’s grounder went through her
legs, allowing Meredith Cioffi to score.

“That wasn’t a good feeling,” Gibbs said. “But I’m so glad my team stayed up. They made the plays.”

Munster
scored three runs in the top of the sixth to survive with a 3-1 win,
snapping L.C.’s six-year sectional winning streak. The Mustangs (24-6)
play Lowell at 10 a.m. CT Saturday in the championship.

The Red Devils are
2-1 against Munster (24-6) this year, with all three games being
one-run affairs.

“This is huge â??? they’re a dynasty,” said Gibbs, who had an RBI single in the sixth.

The
last time L.C. (21-6) lost a sectional was in 2000 to Munster, which
then lost to sectional champion Lowell. The Mustangs haven’t won a
sectional since 1997.

“Missed opportunities,” L.C. coach Keith Hauber said. “We got a lot of kids on base â??? we just couldn’t get the big hit.”

In
the third, Lake Central loaded the bases with no outs. But freshman
pitcher Grace Ispas threw bigger than her birth certificate.

“I
was thinking we better get an out â??? I was so riled up I was just trying
to stay calm,” said Ispas, who got a force at home and two popouts to
get out of the jam.

Then in the sixth, the Indians loaded the
bases with one out. Munster coach Beth Vesa brought in junior pitcher
Eleanor Kennedy to face Karissa Inglis, who doubled twice off her
in the regular season.

The quicker Kennedy struck her out, then got a
forceout to keep the two-run lead.

“It was pretty stressful,” Kennedy said. “I’m so happy we got some revenge.”

In
the sixth, Munster’s Ashley Moore coaxed a walk off of Rachel Weaver.
After a sacrifice bunt, Laura Henning roped a double to left-center.
Megan Paradzinski beat out a bunt to advance the runner. Then, Lauren
Parker beat out a squeeze bunt for an RBI, and Gibbs ripped a single
off of Weaver’s glove.

“We were trying to give it away,” Vesa said of her team’s five errors. “We got lucky.”

For the Indians, it was a new place to be. But Hauber was extremely proud of his talented team.

“These
kids work hard, and they’re wonderful kids,” he said. “They’ve worked
as hard as any team we’ve had that’s won. They were trying to get hits
in those situations.

“Either team could go deep in the tournament. But
Lowell will have something to say about that.”
