PREVIEW: State Finals to be a memorable one

By Brandon Jones
Indiana Runner Sports Coordinator

Friday’s IHSAA Boys Track and Field State Finals have the potential to go down in history as one of the greatest in recent memory.  There is no lack of storylines entering the meet.  Here, I give predictions of what will go down in Bloomington.

4×800 meter relay:
1.   Franklin Central
2.   Gary West Side
3.   Pendleton Heights
4.   Portage
5.   Fishers
6.   Ben Davis
7.   Elkhart Memorial
8.   North Central (Indianapolis)
9.   Lake Central

There is no clear cut favorite in this event for the first time in the past few years.  There are a handful of teams that could grab the win as many teams have yet to run to their full potential.  Note to teams other than Franklin Central and Gary West Side:  GET A SIZEABLE LEAD HEADING INTO THE ANCHOR LEG!

110 meter hurdles:
1.   Bryce Brown – Evansville Harrison
2.   Carl Buchanon – South Bend Clay
3.   D’Juan Richardson – Warren Central
4.   Michael Roberts – Lawrence Central
5.   Zac Chapman – East Noble
6.   Jordan Luallen – Center Grove
7.   Ronneal Williams – Merrillville
8.   Luke Swift – Center Grove
9.   Kerrington Marsh – Fort Wayne North

The top three hurdlers in this field are heads and shoulders above the rest.  I like Brown for the win after a disappointing runner-up finish a year ago.  Buchanon will edge out Richardson for runner-up honors.

100 meter dash:
1.   Shane Crawford – Winamac
2.   Bryce Brown – Evansville Harrison
3.   Devin Pipkin – Warren Central
4.   Andrew Stull – Carmel
5.   Ryan Masters – Clarksville
6.   Tra Wilson – Lawrence North
7.   Lavarus Williams – Ben Davis
8.   Jeffrey Lane – New Albany
9.   Ezra Cripe – Lapel

Crawford is a clear favorite in this event, though it would be fun to see a fresh Bryce Brown challenge the Winamac senior.  A healthy Devin Pipkin would also make this race a masterful one and one can only pray that is the case.

1600 meter run:
1.   Andy Weatherford – Greencastle
2.   De’Sean Turner – Warren Central
3.   Curtis Carr – Brown County
4.   Sean Wilson – Franklin Community
5.   Drew Shields – Fishers
6.   Michael Hoffman – Bloomington North
7.   Henry Lee III – Gary Roosevelt
8.   Ben Reifenberg – Fort Wayne Dwenger
9.   Andrew Prieshoff – Anderson

The top three in this event all have sub 4:10 potential.  I like this race to go out fairly fast with the aforementioned three (Weatherford, Turner, and Carr) moving over the second half.  I see a small gap after those three, but then the “free for all” begins.

4×100 meter relay:
1.   Ben Davis
2.   Warren Central
3.   Evansville Harrison
4.   Carmel
5.   North Central (Indianapolis)
6.   Anderson
7.   Franklin Central
8.   Gary West Side
9.   Lawrence North

Once again, a healthy Devin Pipkin makes this race much more exciting, but I would still have to give the edge to the Giants.  Brown medals for the third time on the day in leading Harrison to third place as he passes Carmel’s Andrew Stull down the stretch.

400 meter dash:
1.   Eugene Ellis – Gary West Side
2.   Brandon Wesby – Gary West Side
3.   Andrew Milenkovski – Merrillville
4.   Daniel Jones – Pike
5.   Eric Brown – Wawasee
6.   Dustin Wilson – Kankakee Valley
7.   Darius Thomas – Evansville Reitz
8.   Robert Gardner – Gary Wallace
9.   Josh Lee – Pike

Northwest Indiana dominates this one with 5 all-staters.  Ellis approaches the state meet record of :46.99 but falls just short.  Kudos to Gary West Side and Pike as they boast two all-staters each.

300 meter hurdles:
1.   Bryce Brown – Evansville Harrison
2.   Carl Buchanon – South Bend Clay
3.   D’Juan Richardson – Warren Central
4.   Ryan McDonald – Wawasee
5.   Anton Scott – Franklin Central
6.   Wes Chamblee – South Bend St. Joseph’s
7.   David Burroughs – Plymouth
8.   Blaine Koger – Lafayette Jefferson
9.   Nate Powers – Hamilton Southeastern

Once again, the top three athletes in this field are just too talented.  Brown wins in dominating fashion and Buchanon edges out Richardson for second.  Wawasee and Franklin Central grab some team points here as both finish much higher than their seeds would indicate.

800 meter run:
1.   Dan Stockberger – McCutcheon
2.   De’Sean Turner – Warren Central
3.   Kevin Labus – Brebeuf Jesuit
4.   Ondraius Richardson – Warren Central
5.   Ben Reifenberg – Fort Wayne Dwenger
6.   Joey Blue – Evansville Memorial
7.   Brandon Litz – Plainfield
8.   Jeff Wysong – West Noble
9.   Jaurice Dye – Elkhart Memorial

The defending champion has just too much down the stretch for a weary Turner.  Warren Central wraps up the team race as they boast 2 all-staters.

200 meter dash:
1.   Raphael Williams – Ben Davis
2.   Daniel Jones – Pike
3.   Ryan Masters – Clarksville
4.   Andrew Stull – Carmel
5.   Darius Willis – Franklin Central
6.   Devin Pipkin – Warren Central
7.   Matt Terrell – Ben Davis
8.   Nicholas Turner – Southport
9.   Jeffrey Lane – New Albany

The most wide open race of the day is the 200 meter dash.  An absent Shane Crawford and ailing Devin Pipkin make this race very interesting.  Toss these names in a hat as it could go any which way.

3200 meter run:
1.   Andrew Poore – Bishop Chatard
2.   Bobby Moldovan – Fort Wayne Northrop
3.   Michael Fout – LaPorte
4.   Cole Hardacre – Pendleton Heights
5.   Adam Green – Franklin Central
6.   Tito Medrano – Lafayette Jefferson
7.   Jacob Rich – Carmel
8.   Adrien Dannemiller – Martinsville
9.   Curtis Carr – Brown County

Rumors are flying that Bobby Moldovan is not the same.  I am not buying it.  He has to settle for the runner-up spot this time around as Bishop Chatard’s Andrew Poore steals the show late.  Very fast times down the line make this the deepest 3200 in state meet history.

4×400 meter relay:
1.   Ben Davis
2.   Warren Central
3.   Gary West Side
4.   Franklin Central
5.   Merrilville
6.   South Bend Clay
7.   Wawasee
8.   South Bend St. Joseph’s
9.   Lawrence Central

The Giants re-emerge as the “king of the relays” as they win two and place all-state in another.  They edge out rival Warren Central and Gary West Side nabs third, but does not push hard enough in the first heat.  Franklin Central secures a top five spot in the team standings.

Long Jump:
1.   Tra Wilson – Lawrence North
2.   Brandon Leap-Hall – Carmel
3.   David Burroughs – Plymouth
4.   Randy Hudi – Crown Point
5.   Kind Butler – Lawrence Central
6.   Brendan Hutton – Southport
7.   Kenton Bennett – Muncie Southside
8.   Jordan Conley – Lawrence North
9.   Seth Vigil – Northridge

Wilson and Hall enter as the guys to beat and have quite a battle on the runway.  Frankie Young’s state meet record is safe for another year, but Wilson defeats his conference rival by the slimmest of margins.

High Jump:
1.   Tyronne McKinney – Fort Wayne North
2.   Neil Angermeier – Gibson Southern
3.   Chase Clevenger – Yorktown
4.   Derrick Spight – Warren Central
5.   Xavier Carr III – Harding
6.   Kenton Bennett – Muncie Southside
7.   Josh Parsons – Northeast Dubois
8.   Aaron Heinzman – Hamilton Heights
9.   Christopher Newman – South Bend Washington

McKinney caps off his career with a win over the defending state champion and others in a talented field.  Yorktown’s Chase Clevenger and Warren Central’s Derrick Spight fall just short of 6′-10.00″ as they end up third and fourth respectively.

Pole Vault:
1.   Hunter Hall – Homestead
2.   Corey Shank – Fort Wayne Northrop
3.   Kevin Schipper – Fort Wayne Dwenger
4.   Kyle Gann – Western
5.   Derek Cullison – Danville
6.   Robbie Trahin – Fort Wayne Dwenger
7.   Derek Messmer – Jasper
8.   Travis Fisher – Fort Wayne Northrop
9.   Kyle Keller – Ben Davis

The “big three” (Hall, Shank, and Schipper) do battle well into the night as it comes down to the wire.  Those three emerge as the dominant forces in Indiana pole vaulting.

Shot Put:
1.   Ben Stephen – Union County
2.   Austin Kramer – Zionsville
3.   Brandon Pounds – Lawrence North
4.   Yahchaaroah Stuart – Warsaw
5.   Chad Wertman – Southridge
6.   Leonard Wells – Warsaw
7.   Max Dedmond – Evansville Central
8.   Jacob Engel – Portage
9.   Cody Miller – Northridge

Stephen makes a run at the state meet record and wins in dominating fashion.  Kramer and Pounds lead the best of the rest as both go over 60 feet.

Discus Throw:
1.   Josh Greenwald – Decatur Central
2.   Ben Stephen – Union County
3.   Chandler Harnish – Norwell
4.   Josh Wells – New Albany
5.   Brandon Pounds – Lawrence North
6.   Daniel Wilcox – Pike
7.   Anthony Lewis – Terre Haute South
8.   Craig Myers – Hanover Central
9.   Cory Reiskamp – Greenfield-Central

The defending state champion from Decatur Central defends his title by the smallest of margins as four athletes crack 180 feet.

Team Competition:
1.   Warren Central
2.   Ben Davis
3.   Evansville Harrison
4.   Gary West Side
5.   Franklin Central
6.   Carmel
7.   Lawrence North
8.   South Bend Clay
9.   Pike

Warren Central has too much talent across the board and approaches 70 points.  Ben Davis is a solid second and studs Brown (Harrison) and Ellis (West Side) lead their teams to top five finishes.  Franklin Central rounds out the top five.

Mike: Our lone request to seniors: Remember

By Mike
McGraw
Executive Director

This is a re-post of last yearâ??s
touching ode to graduating athletes by our Mike McGraw. Seniors, enjoy â?¦

Another
school sports year is drawing to a close, and with it the athletic careers of
thousands of senior athletes in Indiana.
It is a time for satisfaction and, for a few, a time of regret. It is a time
for excitement about your futures and a touch of melancholy that the past four
years will never be repeated.

As you begin
your careers in college or the workplace, we at Hoosier Authority have only one
request: Remember.

Wherever
your road may lead you, remember the fun and sense of accomplishment that your
participation in high school sports delivered. Many of you will never again,
with the exception of your spouse and children, be as dedicated to anything in
life as you have been to yourselves and your teammates over the past four years.
If ever again you experience the same sense of camaraderie, consider yourself
among the lucky few.

As the
years roll by, donâ??t let time dim the memories of this time and the fun you
had.

You have
been a part of American sport in its purest form. There were no multi-year
contracts, just four short years to have your time in the spotlight. There were
no holdouts, just the elation of knowing that you were part of something
special. For most of you, there were no hordes of reporters or bright lights
from the television cameras, just a little voice inside telling you that you
should be proud of yourself. There were no recruitment battles, just a volume
of life lessons you will carry with you into the tough times ahead.

Take a
moment to reflect on what a marvelous journey it has been, and then reflect for
a moment on your obligation to ensure that the journey is equally wonderful for
those who will follow.

Remember
how great it felt to be cheered from the stands, and for many of you how empty
it felt not to be supported as strongly as you deserved. Remember how much you
looked up to those who were the age you are now when you were in middle school.
Remember how much the younger kids have looked up to you. For those of you who have experienced playing in a winning
program, remember how the people in your community walked a little lighter and
smiled a little broader on a Saturday morning when you and your mates had won
the night before.

These are
all feelings you may never experience again but which will stay with you for
the rest of your lives â??? if you simply remember.

Next year,
when the choice is another party at college or coming back for your schoolâ??s
homecoming â?¦ remember. When you settle into whatever community you eventually
call home â?¦ remember. When your grade school-aged children bug you to take them
to the game after your hard week of work â?¦ remember. When your high school-aged
children ask if you are coming to their track meet the next afternoon â?¦ remember.

When your
family is grown and you donâ??t even know the names of the players on the team
anymore â?¦ remember.

You have
been a part of something very special. The pressures of life will inevitably
try to make you forget that. The only wisdom we have to offer is that the same
experiences you had will continue to be special for the generations to come â???
but only if you remember.

STATE FINALS: Preview

By Colin Altevogt
Indiana Runners Girls Coordinator

The two best bad movies of all-time are Joe Dirt and Super Troopers. Hang around any group of movie-quoting, Facebook-using, iPod-toting people in the 16-20 year old demographic and youâ??re likely to hear a line from one of these two movies. If not, weâ??re probably too busy texting each other about whose house weâ??re going to watch Greyâ??s Anatomy at. Personally, if I had a dollar for every time I offered to â??punchisizeâ? someoneâ??s face for free, I wouldnâ??t be writing this article.

With that being said, here are ten things to watch for at the state finals using quotes from â??Joe Dirtâ? and â??Super Troopersâ?:

â??Home is where you make it. Everyone knows that.â?

To Bloomington Northâ??s Rachel Deloney. The state discus champion her freshman year, Deloney was shut out in both throws last year, finishing second in the disc and fourth in the shot put. Once again, Deloney will attempt to get to the top of the podium in her hometown. It wonâ??t be easy, though. Lawrence Northâ??s Felisha Johnson has reigned supreme in the shot all year, and defending state champion Sabrina Johnson of Jeffersonville is back in the disc.

Say Car RamRod.

To Amanda and Lauren Hardesty of Valparaiso. The seniors have been on an elite level statewide since their freshman years. The Sisters Hardesty will run the 4×8, 1600 and 800 this go round. Last season, Lauren led off the Viking 4×8 with a huge lead, then doubled back to win the 1600 on a thrilling kick. Donâ??t be surprised to see Amanda attempt some team tactics to help her sister defend her crown in the old mile run this year.

â??I just lost a buckâ?¦ to myself.â?

To Homesteadâ??s Katie Veith. The pole vaulting extraordinaire broke the state record she shared with Fort Wayne Northropâ??s Brianna Newman last year, clearing 13â??6â?. The two-time state champ (she was also runner-up her sophomore year when Newman beat her on attempts) may have her sights set on the national record of 13â??8â?. Weâ??ll see on Saturday if Veith can once again break her own state record.

â??Heâ??s already pulled over! He canâ??t pull over any farther!â?

To Warren Centralâ??s Candyce McGrone. McGrone has already bettered Maicel Maloneâ??s state records, albeit in very windy conditions. The favorite to win the 100 and 200, McGrone could possibly make it five state titles (100, 200, 4×1, 4×4 and team) in one day. If McGrone does this in her junior campaign, the question is what more can she possibly accomplish?

Would you just order a large, Farva?

â??I donâ??t want a Large Farva! I want a (censored) liter of cola!â?

The all-time classic quote fromâ? Super Troopersâ? goes to Chelsea Blanchard of Carroll, the girl who gave us the best storyline heading into the state finals. Blanchard ran a stateâ??s best 4:58 in the regional, but elected to scratch and head into the 3200 fresh at the state meet. This confused many of the message board goers, apparently many of which subscribe to the theory that more is better. Now, I donâ??t know much in this crazy, mixed up world of ours, but I do know one thing and that is that Blanchardâ??s coach probably knows her better than we do. I think weâ??re going to see something big in that two mile.

â??Things are going to happen for me, just as long as I donâ??t have â??noâ?? in my heart.â?

To Westfieldâ??s Kristina Krasich. A constant on the state scene, Krasich finished third last year in the 1600. Yet, an individual state title has eluded the Shamrock for all of her high school career. Krasich will run the 1600 fresh again this year, electing to sit out the 4×800 relay that the â??Rocks should win. Perhaps, if Krasich does not have â??noâ?? in her heart, this will pay off in the form of an individual state title.

â??Must have been my sixthâ??or even my seventhâ??sense.â?

To the team from Fort Wayne Northrop. The Bruins just missed winning their seventh straight state championship last year after Tamara Adams fell on the second leg of the 4×4. With Beverly Elcock and Kelsey Stephens leading the charge, Northrop has once again rebounded from some graduation losses. A good meet could land Northrop in the top five overall, but more likely in sixth or seventh. And with the recent Indy-area rise to prominence as well as lenient transfer rules, it could be a long time until we see Northrop back on top again.

â??Littering andâ?¦ littering andâ?¦ littering andâ?¦â?

To the Westfield team. The podium for distance races is going to look repetitive. The Shamrocks qualified a 4×8 that is favored to win, one miler, two 800 runners and two girls in the 3200. The night concludes with the â??Rocks trying their hand in the 4×4. If some of the sprint-laden teams slip up, Westfield could grab second place.

â??You gotta keep on keepinâ?? on. Lifeâ??s a garden. Dig it.â?

To the teams from Lawrence North and Ben Davis. All year, these two schools have been in the shadow of Warren Central. Lawrence North lost a back-and-forth battle with the Warriors at the MIC meet back in April. Ben Davis has yet to put everything together in a big meet against Warren. Yet, if one of these teams can pull a state meet shocker, no one will remember the MIC or Marion county meets ten years from now. Yet, I just donâ??t see that happeningâ?¦

â??What are these cells? 8×8? Ours are 9×9. No big deal.â?

To the defending state champions from Warren Central. Despite not getting a lot of credit from some of the so-called experts, the Warriors have held off challenges from Lawrence North and Ben Davis all year. Regional seedings project that Warren does not have the title wrapped up just yet, but this is without the Warriors getting points in some events that they almost assuredly will. If Warren can hold on again this year, we could be in for a long gold line of state meet wins.

SECTIONALS: The Week That Was

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

To say
there were some upsets in last weekâ??s sectional round of the
23rd
Annual IHSAA Softball State Tournament would be an understatement.

Three Monday. Six Tuesday. Four Wednesday. Seven Thursday. One Saturday.

Thatâ??s 21 out
of 60 ranked teams getting a lousy surprise. (Well, 20 actually. But go ahead
and throw Martinsville
in there since the Artesians were previously ranked and had won the last two
Class 4A state championships.)

And that
doesnâ??t even take into account the ranked schools (eight) that were beaten by
higher-ranked schools. So whatâ??s left?

Plenty.

All four
No. 1 teams â??? Indianapolis Lutheran, Indianapolis
Scecina, Pendleton Heights,
and Hamilton Southeastern â??? survived the opening round. (They actually feasted,
outscoring their opponents by a combined 84-4 margin.)

And while
Class 2Aâ??s finest took a beating with 10 of the 15 schools going bye-bye, Class
A advanced either nine or 10 ranked squads (see below), Class 4A moved along nine,
and Class 3A advanced eight to the June 2 regionals.

Speaking
of which, letâ??s take a look ahead at the next round, beginning with the small
schools.

Class A
What was
Pending
the postponed-to-May 29-by-darkness-then-multiple-graduations final of the Clinton Prairie Sectional â???
where the 13th-ranked two-time state champion hosts were vanquished
in the semifinals by Lafayette Central Catholic â??? between No. 8 Frontier and
Lafayette Central Catholic, all but one of the Top 10 made it through to
regionals.

The only
victim? No. 4 Morgan Township, which was felled 2-1 in the opening round by the
sectional host, second-ranked defending state champ Whiting.

Of the
other three upset losers, No. 11 White River Valley and No. 12 Lanesville both
fell to higher-ranked teams. The only true 1A eye-opener came at Northeast
Dubois, where the No. 14 Jeeps fell to Springs Valley,
1-0, in their own sectional final.

What is
Three
marquee semifinal matchups lie on the regional horizon Saturday. At Caston, No.
2 Whiting opens up with No. 6 Lakewood Park Christian. At Clinton
Prairie, No. 1 Indianapolis
Lutheran tackles No. 9 Cowan. And at
North Daviess, No. 3 Tecumseh faces No. 5 host North
Daviess
.

Class 2A
What was
Carnage.

No. 3 Speedway
got ousted by top-ranked Indianapolis Scecina, but Nos. 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 all
were on the disturbing end of upsets. No. 13 Churubusco and No. 15 Prairie
Heights were eliminated by No. 5 Garrett, but No. 14 Union County got tripped
up by unranked Cambridge
City
Lincoln.

What is
Only one high-profile regional. Host
No. 5 Garrett faces No. 12 Madison-Grant in one semifinal, with the winner
likely to get a shot at No. 4 Cass.

Unless, of course, unranked
Heritage
â??? a 1-0 upset
winner in eight innings over No. 9 South Adams at its own sectional, where No.
8 Woodlan also said goodbye â??? pops
another shocker.

Class 3A
What was
Arguably,
second-ranked New Palestine was the biggest name to fall in
the sectional round, dropping an 8-5 decision to No. 10 Mt. Vernon (Fortville).
But the Dragons were severely hamstrung a couple weeks back when ace sophomore pitcher
Sara Evans broke her hand.

Mt. Vernon subsequently
was ousted by No. 1 Pendleton Heights, the now-overwhelming favorite since the
Arabians donâ??t have to worry about New Pal â?¦ or third-ranked Princeton,
a 1-0 loser to No. 5 Jasper.

At
Sectional 19, No. 13 Culver Academies swelled up to upset both No. 6 Mishawaka
Marian AND No. 8 New Prairie, the defending state runner-up, en route to the
crown. And the other two ranked schools to fall, No. 12 Roncalli and No. 15
Batesville, both fell to unranked teams.

What is
Again, just one high-profile regional. The
aforementioned No. 13 Culver Academies draw No. 7 Benton Central in one semi at
Twin Lakes, with the winner likely to battle
No. 4 Andrean for the title.

Then again, we could see a rematch of last yearâ??s 2-1 Jasper Regional
title bout at Boonville, where the 11th-ranked hosts will continue
defense of their 3A state championship in a probable championship bout with No.
5 Jasper.

Class 4A
What was
No reason
to think anything will bounce the rolling train that is undefeated, top-ranked
Hamilton Southeastern off its tracks. The Royals,
paced by power pitcher Morgan Melloh, pummeled their three Hamilton County opponents by scores of 9-zip (Fishers), 6-zip
(Carmel), and 3-0
(Noblesville) to capture Sectional 9.

And HSEâ??s
path became that much easier when the stateâ??s only other unbeaten team, No. 2 Mishawaka, dropped its
opener to No. 15 Elkhart Memorial, 2-0. Then you have No. 5 Northviewâ??s 2-1
loss in 10 innings to unranked Mooresville in always kooky
Sectional 13 (the one where Martinsville lost, 3-2, to unranked Terre Haute
North), plus No. 8 Munsterâ??s 10-1 championship drubbing in Sectional 1 to No. 9
Lowell.

Nos. 11,
12, and 14 also have left the building.

What is
The
stateâ??s much highly anticipated regional, where No. 1 HSE gets host No. 7
Center Grove right off the bat. That winner should see No. 3 Avon in the final,
with the Orioles primed to take advantage of any letdown situation should they
beat unranked Indianapolis
Cathedral.

Three
ranked teams also are featured at Floyd Central, where No. 6 Floyd Central
battles 10th-ranked Castle in one semifinal, with the survivor
getting either No. 13 Columbus North or giant ****** Mooresville in the finale.
