FB: Week 2 staff picks

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

Here we go again for Week 2 of the Indiana high school football season. Several big games highlight the schedule, including Warren Central and Indianapolis Cathedral each traveling to Ohio to take part in the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge, Penn visiting Ben Davis, and a great crosstown rivalry in Columbus East traveling to Columbus North.

Before we get started, let’s take a quick look back to last week’s standings. Managing Editor Shawn Aylsworth had a case of beginner’s luck, going 12-3, while Executive Director Mike McGraw and I tied at 11-4. Hoosier Crossroads Conference guru Eric Eaton needs to catch up after a 9-6 outing last weekend.

Editor (Shawn) note: Whatever, dude.

Standings after Week 1:

Shawn 12-3
Waterboy 11-4
Mike 11-4
Eric 9-6

To the games! (Rankings are from The Waterboy.)

Mike: Danville, only because they are at home.

Waterboy: Pike wins a close one at home. Decatur Central is a lot better than people think.

Shawn: Um, Pike. And it won’t be close, either, W-W-W-W-WATERBOY!

Fishers (1-0, 1-0) at 5A #6 Hamilton Southeastern (1-0, 1-0)
Waterboy: I’ll take the upset. Fishers will take advantage of several HSE turnovers, and the Royals won’t be able to steal this one like they did last week.

Eric: HSE
Shawn: Fishers

Shawn: Arlington

4A # 10 Roncalli (1-0) at 5A # 7 Franklin Central (1-0)

Eric: Roncalli
Shawn: Franklin Central

5A #10 Penn (0-1) at 5A #9 Ben Davis (1-0)

Eric: Ben Davis
Shawn: Ben Davis

1A #1 Sheridan (1-0) at Hamilton Heights (0-1)
Waterboy: Sheridan wins big, and Bud Wright passes Chris Geesman for second on the all-time coaching wins list with 340. By the way, if Nick Zachery doesn’t win Mr. Football, the guys handing out the award need their heads examined.

Mike: Jasper
Eric: Jasper
Shawn: Southridge

Lawrence Central (1-0) at North Central (Indianapolis) (0-1)
Waterboy: Lawrence Central has a great chance to surprise some people in Conference Indiana this year under new coach Jayson West. On the other side of the coin, I would be very surprised if North Central wins three games this year. I’ll take the Bears.
Mike: Lawrence Central
Eric: Lawrence Central
Shawn: LC was 5-5 my senior season, when I had exactly eight passes thrown my way at wide receiver. Four of them were intercepted, and I stretched as far as I could into the air to scratch that last overthrown pass with the middle fingernail of my left hand. Fortunately, I learned how to write. FB: The Waterboy does an about-face on state rankings

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

The Waterboy is a young and enthusiastic fan of both high-quality H2O and Indiana high school football who has been kind enough to share his insights with us on the 2008 season. Sound off on his thoughts and predictions via the link at the bottom of this story!

CLASS 5A
This week’s Class 5A rankings features several newcomers, and a former No. 1 is no longer in the Top 10.

Carmel moves into the top spot thanks to the combination of its win over Indianapolis Cathedral and the 42-0 pasting given by Warren Central to Merrillville. Warren leapfrogged over several schools, including Pike, to grab the No. 3 spot.

Elsewhere, Hamilton Southeastern moves up to sixth after its wild win over Avon in the final game last weekend at Lucas Oil Stadium. Franklin Central, Fort Wayne Snider, and Ben Davis all make appearances this week after big wins last week. And Penn drops from fifth to 10th after an upset loss to Valparaiso that saw the Kingsmen score only nine points.

Brebeuf, which beat a good Indianapolis Scecina squad, stays at the fifth spot. NorthWood jumps to sixth after its 21-7 win over Jimtown. Sheridan coach Bud Wright is just one win away from passing Chris Geesman for second on the all-time coaching wins list, and his No. 1 Blackhawks can get it Friday against Hamilton Heights. Rockville survived Wabash River Conference rival Seeger despite giving up several big plays on defense. Lafayette Central Catholic proved that two-platoon football can work at the 1A level with a huge win over Delphi. And both Churubusco and North Miami make their debuts in the Top 10 this week after impressive showings last week.

GSoc: #2 Carmel captures 12-team SB St. Joseph’s Invitational

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Second-ranked Carmel rebounded from a season-opening loss Aug. 18 to No. 11 Zionsville by slicing its way through the field Aug. 22-23 at the South Bend St. Joseph’s. The Greyhounds returned south with the championship of the 12-team affair, a tournament that annually boasts many of the state’s top teams.

Carmel began the weekend with a 4-1 bouncing of No. 15 host South Bend St. Joseph’s 4-1. Taylor Cornwell opened the scoring for the Greyhounds and added a second goal later in the match. Carmel’s other goals were scored by Erin Blewitt and Bea Fassman, while Meagan Goeppringer tallied the host’s lone score unassisted.

No. 4 Penn was Carmel’s second victim of the tourney. The Kingsmen slowed Carmel’s offense a bit but were unable to generate any offense of their own – Penn was outshot 22-6 – as the Greyhounds emerged with a 2-0 victory. It was “The Cornwell & Blewitt Show” in this one. Cornwell scored the opening goal on an assist from Blewitt, and the two simply changed roles for the second goal.

The Greyhounds’ last win came against fifth-ranked Evansville Reitz, 3-0. Katelyn Strout, Marissa Abel, and Alex Chitwood got into the scoring act with goals in the ’Hounds’ final game.

“After a slow start to the season, the girls took lessons learned in the following three training sessions to the field and put them to good use against three Top 20 teams,” said Carmel coach Frank Dixon. “The team defense, after a shaky start (against Zionsville), came through with two shutouts, and the offense began to click with some very good goals.”

Carmel, which is now 3-1-0 on the year, will host the Carmel Invitational Aug. 30 before opening play in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Sept. 6 at Terre Haute North. This weekend’s four-team invite is a loaded one as now-No. 3 Carmel and second-ranked Fort Wayne Dwenger will face off against top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral and No. 19 Fort Wayne Canterbury.

FB: 4A #8 Plainfield thumps 3A #11 Danville, 28-7

Plainfield served notice that the Class 4A eighth-ranked Quakers will be a force to be reckoned with this year in the Mid-State Conference with a 28-7 opening-night drubbing of Hendricks county rival 3A No. 11 Danville. The Quakers opened their new stadium Aug. 22 with a devastating rushing attack and a ball-hawking defense.

(Make sure to check out Ashley Looper’s video highlights in the player at the end of this story!)

Plainfield opened the scoring in the opening period with a 46-yard punt return for touchdown from senior Kevin Mucho, who dazzled the facility’s fans with a 68-yard jaunt in the second quarter that preceded a long fumble return for TD by senior linebacker Corey Cragen.

That made it 21-0 at halftime, after which Danville got on the board on a 12-yard pass from junior quarterback Trent Shaffer to junior wide receiver Calvin Beasley. Two rushing TDs from senior tailback Zane Fakes (a 30-yarder in the third period, a one-yarder in the fourth) then finished off the scoring.
