FB: 5A #1 Carmel outlasts 4A #1 Cathedral, 28-21

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

CARMEL – If you listened to all the things that coaches say are important to winning football games, your head starts swimming. However, there are two things – balance and adjustments – that are always on the mind of a coach.

After his team’s 28-21 comeback victory Aug. 23 over Class 4A top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral before 8,000 fans in a game televised nationally on ESPN, 5A No. 1 Carmel coach Mo Moriarity has those items checked off on the “job well done” list.

STAY TUNED FOR VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS AND INTERVIEWS!

Balance was the key in this victory. The Greyhounds ran for 203 yards and passed for 202 –
you can’t get much better than that. The adjustment part, meanwhile, came from the Carmel defense.

After surrendering two Cathedral scores by being beaten on the edge, the Greyhound defense made adjustments at halftime that completely shut the Fighting Irish down in the second half. Cathedral, it would turn out, did not have the same balance to their offense.

When Carmel finally figured out a way to shut down the Cathedral running game – the Irish finished the game with 227 yards on 30 carries, a hefty average of more than 7.5 yards per tote – Cathedral struggled, generating less than 60 yards of offense in the second half.

Kentucky-bound Carmel quarterback Morgan Newton was the star of this contest. With senior running back Kurt Freytag out for a good portion of the critical second half with cramps, the 6’4” Newton rushed for two Carmel touchdowns and passed for two more.

His 18-yard scamper midway through the fourth period was the game-winner, capping a Carmel comeback from down 21-7 late in the first half.

For the game, the senior completed 16 of 21 passes – providing headaches for all Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference defensive coordinators by throwing to eight different receivers – for 194 yards and zero interceptions. Newton’s two touchdown tosses were for five yards to junior wideout Jon Schmidt to start the game’s scoring in the opening quarter and for four yards to Billy Davis to draw the ‘Hounds within a touchdown at 21-14 late in the third.

The Mr. Football candidate’s two rushing scores, meanwhile, were of two yards and 18 yards to tie the game in the fourth quarter and then win it. The dual-threat QB finished with 20 carries for 92 yards on the ground.

After Newton’s first score dented the scoreboard, Cathedral answered with 21 straight points and seemingly taking control of the contest. Senior wide receiver Barry Flynn tied the game in the first period with a 33-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Kofi Hughes (17 carries for 159 yards rushing, but just 3 of 10 passing for 62 yards with one interception) before the Irish went up 14-7 on Hughes’ 68-yard run.

That advantage grew to 21-7 before halftime when junior running back Nick Najem (11 rushes, 61 yards) rambled in from 32 yards out. But Carmel’s distinctive advantages in first downs (21-10) and turnovers (just one to Cathedral’s three) would prove too much to overcome.

GXC: #2 Carmel coasts to opening victory at Brebeuf Inv.

By Dave Fresher
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – Brebeuf hosted the first high-profile meet of the 2008 girls high school cross country season Aug. 23 featuring more than a dozen top Central Indiana schools at the Brebeuf Invitational.

The girls race was not nearly as close as the boys, which went to unranked North Central (Indianapolis) in an upset over No. 11 Franklin Central and third-ranked Fishers. Ninth-ranked Indianapolis Chatard won the girls individual battle, but No. 2 Carmel won the team war.

Carly Sobolewski finished first for the Trojans in 18:35, but she was followed by the Carmel foursome of Renee Wellman, Alex Chitwood, Kayla McCurdy, and Kelly McCurd to round out the first five. Carmel’s Sarah Bennett finished seventh to put five Greyhounds in the Top 10.

Carmel easily won the meet with 21 points. Unranked North Central and Chatard made it interesting, but the Panthers nipped the Trojans for second place, 113 to 115. No. 10 Indianapolis Cathedral (130) finished fourth in the 13-team field, with Hamilton Southeastern (143) fifth, Fishers (178) sixth, and No. 18 Lawrence North (197) taking seventh.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Class 5A Fishers Tigers christened brand-new Lucas Oil Stadium Aug. 22 with a 31-6 rout of Hamilton County and Hoosier Crossroads Conference rival 5A Noblesville in the first-ever game played at the new home of the Indianapolis Colts.

And let the record reflect that the roof was closed for this historic first game, the first of two games of the ninth annual PeyBack Classic hosted by Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Class 4A No. 6 Whiteland pounded 4A New Palestine, 33-12, in Game 2.

Fishers junior running back Tyler Carroll stamped his name into the history books against Noblesville during the first quarter when he scampered 56 yards to paydirt, becoming the first person to ever score a touchdown at “The Luke.”

Following Carroll’s nifty run, the Tigers tacked on a late second-quarter field goal from 22 yards out to lead 10-0 at the break.

Noblesville regrouped at halftime, though, and scored the second half’s first touchdown on an eight-yard run by sophomore quarterback Jake Bates. The Millers missed the extra point, however, so still trailed by four at 10-6.

And that would be as close as Noblesville would get as Fishers ran off 21 unanswered points to seal the season-opening win.

Fishers junior quarterback Alex Hines accounted for two of the game’s final three scores.
He threw a 10-yard screen pass to junior RB Tommy Huser (nine carries, 94 yards) for his first score, then kept the ball on a two-yard keeper for the second.

Fishers’ other second-half score came from Carroll (16 carries, 117 yards) on a three-yard run.

Noblesville was playing its first game under new coach Lance Scheib. Scheib and the Millers will hope for a better effort next week when they play their home opener against 1-0 Brownsburg.

Meanwhile, Fishers will attempt to start 2-0 for the first time in school history when the Tigers travel to arch-rival Hamilton Southeastern (1-0).
