VB: 3A #2 Delta upsets 4A #2 Muncie Central, 3-2

By Mike McGraw
Executive Directo
r

It lived up to the billing, and then some.

The Sept. 23 match between Class 4A No. 2 undefeated Muncie Central and 3A second-ranked host Delta was an epic showdown. The Delaware County rivals battled through five intense games before the home-standing Eagles pulled the upset.

That is, if you can call it that. The Eagles prevailed 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9 to hand the Bearcats their first loss of the season.

Momentum in this match swayed back and forth, depending on which team could successfully get into its offense. Both teams made that difficult on the opponent by, among other things, serving several aces. Delta had five on the evening, while Muncie Central knocked home eight service-winners.

If you are looking for a hero, look no further than Delta’s freshman setter, Morgan Bergren. The 5’11” Bergren did a masterful job of setting for the Eagles’ powerful senior hitter, 6’2” Darcy Dorton.

Dorton responded with 26 kills in the five games, nearly half of the 56 recorded by the Eagles.

The victory moves Delta to 16-4 on the season. More importantly, the Eagles lay claim to victories over both Muncie powers, Central and Burris, in the same year.

Those who know Munciana volleyball will testify that is a rare feat indeed.

FB: Heritage Christian new 2A No. 1 in Waterboy rankings

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

The Waterboy is a young and enthusiastic fan of both high-quality H2O and Indiana high school football who has been kind enough to share his insights with us on the 2008 season. Sound off on his thoughts and predictions via the link at the bottom of this story!

CLASS 5A
A pair of big games last week in Conference Indiana and one in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference made the picture a lot clearer in 5A.

Lawrence Central and Southport both won big over opponents Columbus North and Bloomington South. You can’t call them spoilers anymore – both the Bears and the Cardinals are for real and will be very dangerous come tournament time.

Hamilton Southeastern held off a determined Lafayette Jefferson team 41-31, while Fort Wayne Snider handled Harding 31-6.

Pike and Ben Davis return to the Top 10 after beating lesser opponents in Week 5, and Valparaiso falls out after being upset by Chesterton.

CLASS 4A
Evansville Reitz got back into the Top 10 after humbling Castle 42-28 last week in the Reitz Bowl.

Indianapolis Cathedral moved above .500 for the first time this season with a win over Indianapolis Arlington.

Shelbyville and Delta are looking better and better every week of the season – we might just see a battle of unbeatens in the final week of the season as the Golden Bears and the Eagles will meet for the likely Hoosier Heritage Conference championship in Week 9.

Roncalli (or “Rapscallion” as spellcheck wants to call the Rebels), beat an overmatched Indianapolis Scecina team 35-14.

CLASS 3A
There are two new additions to the 3A Top 10 this week in Western and Yorktown.

South Bend St. Joseph’s stayed at third despite losing to Penn yet again. There was hope that this might be the year for an upset of the Kingsmen in the Northern Indiana Conference.

North Montgomery dropped to fourth, while NorthWood jumped a couple spots to sixth.

The Tipton Blue Devils fell to ninth, down two from seventh, after their 35-14 loss at West Lafayette.

One new addition this week is Oak Hill, which won big over Madison-Grant last week 49-0.

CLASS A
There was no change whatsoever in any of the 1A Top 10 spots this week. Indianapolis Scecina lost to Roncalli to fall to just 3-2, but the Crusaders play a very tough schedule and will still compete with the best teams around.

Sheridan may be in danger of slipping as the Blackhawks have played a couple sloppy games against lesser opponents the last two weeks.
