FB: 4A #2 Lowell holds off late-charging 4A #10 Hobart, 35-32

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Down 11 points in a Sept. 26 Northwest Crossroads Conference clash at Class 4A second-ranked Lowell, Hobart senior Roger Cardwell returned the opening kickoff of the second half 62 yards to the host’s 36-yard line.

But the 4A No. 10 Brickies went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and Lowell running back Brandon Grubbe’s 68-yard touchdown gave the Red Devils a commanding 21-3 lead over the offensively challenged Brickies.

Flood gates opened, right? Well, uh, no. Not by a long shot.

In a kooky second half that saw 50 points fly up on the scoreboard before a packed house at The Inferno, Hobart rallied big-time after consecutive fumbled snaps by the previously coasting Red Devils and actually had a chance to steal a victory in the game’s final four minutes.

But a bad shotgun snap from Lowell’s 24 resulted in a critical 20-yard loss. And that bad karma swallowed the Brickies’ comeback effort – Hobart scored three touchdowns in the first 6:44 of the fourth quarter to cut a 24-point deficit to just three – whole two plays later when senior quarterback Matt Barras was intercepted with 3:36 to play.

Behind six more carries from Grubbe (37 rushes for 253 yards and three touchdowns), Lowell was able to run out the clock and preserve a thoroughly frightening 35-32 victory.

Not too shabby for Week 6’s only battle of unbeatens in the entire state.

Grubbe (rhymes with “groovy,” which he was – last seen by those outside “The Region” suffering a gruesome leg injury in Lowell’s 33-14 loss to Evansville Reitz in last year’s 4A state championship game – had no problems being the workhorse in this one. The 5’11”, 175-pound junior toted the rock 20 times in the first half for 123 yards and a touchdown as Lowell racked up 11 first downs en route to a 14-3 lead at intermission.

There must have been something in the locker room Gatorade.

The second half saw big play after big play as Lowell (6-0 overall, 4-0 in Northwest Crossroads play) and Hobart (5-1, 3-1) suddenly found themselves in a shootout of Warren Centralian proportion. Witness:

    * Cardwell’s 62-yard kickoff return to start the half for Hobart
    * Grubbe’s 68-yard TD scamper five plays later that pushed Lowell’s lead to 21-3
    * Lowell senior QB Kurt Monix’s 26-yard pass on 3rd and 7 to sophomore Cole Midgett that superceded Grubbe’s second TD run that shifted the game into rock ’n Lowell at 28-3
    * Barras’ 53-yard bomb to 6’4”, 230-pound senior Bobby James four plays later – followed by a two-point conversion pass from Cardwell on a botched PAT snap, no less – that drew Hobart within 28-11
    * Senior Cody Midgett’s 92-yard kickoff return on the next play that put Lowell back up 35-11 … with 2:27 still remaining IN THE THIRD QUARTER

Pause, take a breath. Yes, that was indeed 29 points scored.

OK … fourth quarter!!

Barras, 4 of 5 for 57 yards on the next drive, hit Cardwell for a 10-yard touchdown pass. On the first play of the period. Of course!

That made it 35-18 and, other than noticing that the scoreboard is starting to exude smoke, there’s no reason to think Lowell could let this get out of hand. Even after the Red Devils go three-and-out and give Hobart the ball at the Lowell 47 following a 22-yard punt.

PSYCH! Barras found James (a ridiculous five catches for 132 yards and two TDs in the second half) on a 47-yard bomb on the next play to cut the lead to 35-25. And that’s when things really started to get interesting.

On 3rd and 3 from his own 49, Monix fumbled the snap from center. Hobart recovered at the Lowell 48, and nine plays later – after a huge 12-yard completion from Barras to Cardwell on 3rd and 8 – Barras snuck it in from the 1.

Badda-bing, badda-bang. Suddenly we have a 35-32 contest with 5:10 still remaining on the clock.

Incredibly, Monix fumbled the snap from center again two plays later, and again Hobart recovered – this time at the Lowell 24 with an eternity (four minutes) to cash in and take the lead. But that’s when the tricky Brickies met their match, the snap from the shotgun formation sailing over Barras’ head and resulting in the 20-yard loss.

After an incomplete pass deep to Cardwell, Barras’ pass to James deflected off the big fella’s fingertips and into the hands of senior linebacker Justin Juarez, who rambled all the way for an apparent pick-six.

A block in the back on the return prevented the score, but Lowell was able to maintain possession the rest of the way to finally end it.

Despite all the second-half fireworks and Hobart’s practically Lazarus-like resurrection, the difference in this game was the Brickies’ inability to prevent the big – make that huge – play. For the game, Hobart surrendered a baker’s dozen plays of 10 or more yards, including whoppers of 23, 25, 26, 68, and 92 yards.

The final dagger? A 46-yard completion – on 3rd and 15 from the Lowell 43, no less – from Monix to senior wide receiver Jake Belt with just under a minute to play.

All that, my friends, was simply too much to overcome. But the Brickies sure did try.

Next up for Lowell is a non-conference battle Oct. 3 with Hammond (4-2), a 63-8 Week 6 loser at Hammond Morton. Hobart – which remains homeless with its famous Brickie Bowl still recovering from those terrible northwestern Indiana floods of a few weeks back – will travel next Friday to Munster (5-1, 3-1), a 17-14 winner over Griffith.

FB: Uncle Mike’s Notebook Week 6

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Two weeks ago, Uncle Mike said Portage might just go undefeated through the regular season. The Indians have since lost two in a row, the city has a restraining order against him, and he had to cancel his vacation to the slag pit at the steel mill.

Undaunted, he is ready to put the curse on a couple of other teams. That and more … in this edition of “Just pray he doesn’t think you are any good.”

Northern Indiana
Chesterton 37, Portage 17
Are we going to have to start calling the Trojans the Carmel of the north?

Fort Wayne Snider 34, Fort Wayne North 21
Considering the history here, this is a moral victory for the North squad.

Lowell 35, Hobart 32
The Brickies must have had a brick in their brains in that last drive of the night.

North White 51, Caston 0
They aren’t in Sheridan’s class, but this is a team to keep your eye on up north in 1A.

Southwood 43, North Miami 42 (3OT)
From what I hear, this was the game of the year.

South Adams 42, Adams Central 7
These are tough times for a proud Jet program.

Central Indiana
Bloomington South 35, Lawrence Central 21
All right, everybody who said after four weeks of league play that Southport would be standing alone at the top of Conference Indiana raise your hands – LIARS!

Clinton Central 28, Tipton 7
The Bulldogs finally won a big game. Congratulations.

Hagerstown 34, Tri 7
I know it is supposed to be impossible to say this about a team from Eastern Indiana, but these guys aren’t half bad.

Heritage Christian 49, Beech Grove 0
For a school that publicly said it was de-emphasizing winning, the Eagles sure are good at it.

Mooresville 37, Martinsville 16
This is the one brother having a Bless-like season. Congratulations on win No. 100.

Indianapolis Cathedral 17, Roncalli 3
I am still waiting on a really impressive win by the Fighting Irish.

Southern Indiana
Brownstown 31, Seymour 27
Little brother just stole big brother’s girlfriend, then stole the keys to his car.

Evansville Reitz 7, Evansville Central 6
It is a little-known secret that both teams prepared for this game by watching tapes from the Duneland Conference.

Tecumseh 61, Mitchell 0
If you have never seen the stadium at Tecumseh, do yourself a favor and go. To say it’s unique would be an understatement – there is a house 30 feet from the end zone.

FB: Week 6 staff picks

By The Waterboy
Contributing Water

NOTE: Our story-loading site was down for about 36 hours, so we’re playing catch-up! The staff picks were, indeed, submitted in time on Friday.

As Week 6 begins, we are two-thirds through the high school football season, and tournament time draws near. Speaking of tournaments, let’s check out the overall standings in the staff picks competition:

Week 5 results
Eric        14-1
Waterboy    13-2
Shawn        12-3
Mike        12-3

Overall standings
Shawn        50-10        –
Eric        49-11        1
Mike        45-15        5
Waterboy    44-16        6

The cupboard is bare when it comes to big-name matchups, but there are still plenty of opportunities for entertainment this Friday night. To the picks!

Concord (5-0) @ 2A #4 Jimtown (4-1)
Waterboy: Jimtown. The Jimmies win a tough one at home.
Mike: Concord. Too big a step this time around for the Jimmies.
Eric: Concord
Shawn: The Minutemen, a two-touchdown power numbers favorite, undoubtedly have been drooling all week looking back at last year’s 35-14 drubbing in this game. Can you say motivation?

Evansville Central (4-1) at 4A #8 Evansville Reitz (4-1)
Waterboy: Another game at the Reitz Bowl. I’ll take the home team.
Mike: Reitz
Eric: Reitz
Shawn: Reitz

2A #5 Fairfield (5-0) @ Angola (4-1)
Waterboy: Fairfield
Mike: Fairfield. Angola was revealed against Churubusco.
Eric: Fairfield
Shawn: The unbeaten Falcons have outscored five foes 278-49. Since the name on this week’s opponent’s jerseys doesn’t say “Jimtown” – the Jimmies have ruined perfect seasons the last two years by beating the Falcons in the sectional – I’ll take Fairfield.

Fountain Central (3-2) @ Seeger (3-2)
Waterboy: Seeger
Mike: Seeger. Don’t be rediculous
Eric: Seeger
Shawn: McLovin, learn how to spell “ridiculous.” I’ll take “Seger.”

Hobart (5-0) @ 4A #2 Lowell (5-0)
Waterboy: I’ll take the Red Devils.
Mike: Hobart
Eric: Lowell
Shawn: W-W-W-Waterboy, how can you not have 5-0 Hobart ranked? The Brickies beat 5A Crown Point and shut out Griffith! This is the state’s ONLY game between unbeatens, and your (un)rankings tarnish that fact. I must take Hobart just for spite (plus, I’ll be doing a story off it by listening over the Internets). Boo to yooooooo …

4A #10 Roncalli (3-2) vs. 4A #3 Indianapolis Cathedral (3-2)
Waterboy: The Irish win another close one.
Mike: Cathedral
Eric: Cathedral
Shawn: Cathedral. And no, it won’t be close.

5A #6 Lawrence Central (5-0) @ 5A #9 Bloomington South (4-1)
Waterboy: Bloomington South won’t be able to stop the run. I’ll take the Bears.
Mike: LC. The Bears are the best in Conference Indiana.
Eric: Lawrence Central
Shawn: McLovin, that doesn’t say much this year. Alma Mater had an unbeaten, highly ranked Bloomington South team on the ropes back in ’83 till Lynn Churchill busted a fullback dive for about 65 yards and a score. D’oh. Payback some quarter century later will be suh-weet!

1A #5 Linton (5-0) @ North Daviess (4-1)
Waterboy: Linton
Mike: Linton
Eric: Linton
Shawn: Linton has shut out its last three opponents 119-0, and the Miners beat North Daviess 14-zip last year. But that was at home, and I road-tripped to suburban Elnora earlier this year for a boys basketball regional. Jungle karma for the host Cougars.

5A #8 Pike (3-2) @ Columbus North (3-2)
Waterboy: Columbus North. The Bulldogs get a little payback for the semistate loss last year.
Mike: Pike
Eric: Pike
Shawn: W-W-W-Waterboy, learn how to spell “Bull Dogs.” I’ll take “Pyke.”

Portage (4-1) @ Chesterton (4-1)
Waterboy: Portage
Mike: Portage
Eric: Chesterton
Shawn: Classic letdown scenario for the host Trojans, fresh off their 12-10 offensive slugfest W over Valparaiso. Despite the fact that I played slow-pitch softball this week against a dude from Portage who jacked a ball about 25 feet over the fence, I am sticking with the home team – the Indians’ 21-6 loss at Crown Point last week is enough to scare me off.

Tri-West Hendricks (4-1) @ Crawfordsville (3-2)
Waterboy: Tri-west
Mike: Tri-West
Eric: Tri-West
Shawn: Puh-leez. Yes, C-ville got beat by Beech Grove last week. But the Athenians hung with high-powered West Lafayette in Week 1 and are home for this one, plus they play a tougher schedule. Y’all can have your Bruins.

3A #2 West Lafayette (5-0) @ Rensselaer (3-2)
Waterboy: West Lafayette
Mike: West Lafayette. Again, don’t be rediculous.
Eric: West Lafayette
Shawn: McLovin, did you take any English classes at Twin Lakes OR IU?!?! “West Loffy-ett” by a bunch.

Harrison (West Lafayette) (3-2) @ Zionsville (3-2)
Waterboy: Harrison
Mike: Harrison
Eric: Harrison
Shawn: Yes

Lawrence North (2-3) @ 5A #3 Center Grove (4-1)
Waterboy: I know, I know – why is LN up here? The Wildcats have been playing better lately and have enough athletes to put a scare into any team. I’ll still take the Trojans.
Mike: Center Grove
Eric: Center Grove
Shawn: OMG. W-W-W-Waterboy, have you SEEN Center Grove play? Trojans by 30.

2A #1 Heritage Christian (5-0) @ Beech Grove (2-3)
Waterboy: I’ll take Heritage Christian in a shootout. If I were a bookie, the over/under on this game would be about 90 points.
Mike: Heritage Christian. What on Earth is this game doing on here?
Eric: Heritage Christian
Shawn: Great. Between me and my Sagarin ratings and The Waterboy’s longings for illegal backroom parlay carding, we are on the verge of Las Vegas East. The shootout will be one-sided, son – HC.

Go and play your foosball, Bobby Booshay! Share your thoughts on our Football message board.

GSoc: #1 Carmel tallies late to escape state champ #9 Cathedral, 2-1

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

LAWRENCE – With a handful of minutes left in the Sept. 24 girls soccer showdown between top-ranked Carmel and defending state champion No. 9 Indianapolis Cathedral, sophomore forward Kelsie Strout re-entered the game for the visiting Greyhounds.

The move by Carmel coach Frank Dixon proved prophetic just moments later when Strout – the tallest player on the field – took a gorgeous set-up pass to the right front of the goal from junior Bea Gassman and poked it in to the left of Fighting Irish senior goalie Erica Maginn with just 1:21 left to play, saving the day for Carmel in a 2-1 victory.

Strout’s second goal – she had tallied on a breakaway with just over 23 minutes remaining to knot the score at 1-1 – completely reversed the momentum of the game’s first 55 minutes. This clash of titans at Lawrence Park was dominated by Cathedral for the first two-thirds of the game, with the Irish shockingly holding Carmel shotless in the first half and forcing play into the Carmel zone time and again.

That relentless pressure finally produced results when senior fullback and captain Anna Parsons knocked in a header off a left corner kick from junior midfielder Anna Ventimiglia at the 46th minute, putting Cathedral on top 1-0.

Yet despite an 18-5 shot advantage for the Irish, they couldn’t put Carmel away. From the left sideline, Greyhound sophomore Allie Auscherman hit a streaking Strout in the center of the field about 11 minutes later, and Strout tied the game when she beat Maginn in the left corner.

That shot jolted some life into the ’Hounds, who got a fantastic diving save swatted to her right by freshman goalie Sam Tiongson on the game’s lone penalty kick about eight minutes later. It also set the stage for Strout’s game-winning kick on the lovely long pass from Gassman.

Carmel improves to 10-1-1 with the victory, while Cathedral – fresh off an impressive 1-1 tie four days earlier at then-No. 3 Zionsville – falls to 7-4-2.

COME BACK FRIDAY FOR VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS AS WELL AS INTERVIEWS WITH CARMEL COACH FRANK DIXON AND CATHEDRAL COACH MARC BEHRINGER!!
