GSw Carmel 4-Way: Top-ranked Greyhounds blast past #2 HSE, two others

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Top-ranked host Carmel won nine of 12 events Dec. 22 in downing three opponents in the rescheduled-by-bad-weather Carmel 4-Way. No. 2 Hamilton Southeastern won the other three events as each Hamilton County power rolled past No. 44 Lafayette Jefferson and West Lafayette in head-to-head action.

The evening’s big matchup featured the state’s top two girls teams squaring off, and the host Greyhounds did not fail to deliver in posting a 113-73 win over Southeastern. That feat included a double victory by senior Jessie Hammes (:57.10 in the 100-yard backstroke, :57.17 in the 100 butterfly) and a sweep of the three relay events.

Southeastern junior Carly Mercer was the meet’s other double winner, capturing the 200 freestyle in 1:53.32 and the 100 free in :52.02.

“Well, our ladies were not able to beat Carmel tonight, but they sure did bring energy,” said HSE coach Andy Pedersen. “The place was loud all night long, and a great deal of that was coming from the HSE athletes cheering for each and every race.”

BB: Uncle Mike’s Notebook Week 5

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. Uncle Mike’s family, however, can only stand just so much of the old curmudgeon before they send him out to a ballgame somewhere just to get rid of him.

So, here is a little holiday cheer from the original scrooge. By the way, he is giving us a bonus with some comments on the girls side from the Dec. 26-27 action.

Boys games
Princeton 78, Wood Memorial 36
How do you know that basketball season has started? Princeton actually wins and Wood Memorial is still losing.

Terre Haute South 69, South Vermillion 31
The Wildcats were beaten by one man – literally! Terre Haute’s John Michael Jarvis outscored South Vermillion 34-31 by himself. That is downright embarrassing.

Delta 67, Richmond 50
There was a time when this score would have been news.

Guerin Catholic 78, Indianapolis Chatard 62
It is OK for this to happen in basketball, but if Guerin starts to compete like this in football, Chatard may ask the Vatican to step in.

Mississinewa 53, Oak Hill 47
This means war! Oh wait, they have already been at war for 40 years.

Marshall (IL) 55, Rockville 53
This is disappointing. Everybody in Western Indiana was looking forward to the game between Rockville and Terre Haute South.

Lafayette Central Catholic 65, Franklin Central 59
People are going to have to face facts. The Knights may not be easy to like, but they are good. By the way, I would not want to be in Franklin Central’s practices this week.

Girls games
LaVille 61, Caston 12
Seriously, this is too bad. Caston is a school with a proud tradition in a basketball-crazy part of the state.

Bloomington South 56, Indianapolis Tech 19
This game was a gift from J.R. to his Lady Panthers.

Borden 46, Brown County 45
I thought Borden was a dairy. Wow, did I just show how old I am?

Fort Wayne Elmhurst 60, Fort Wayne South 49
Every once in awhile, Elmhurst has to remind everybody they still exist.

Vincennes Rivet 71, Evansville Mater Dei 60
I would make some crack about being surprised that Rivet has five girls in the school, except they are really good. The bottom line is that when you are baptized in Vincennes, they hit you with the water and hand you a basketball.

BSw Carmel 4-Way: #11 host ‘Hounds roll past #9 HSE, two others

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

No. 11 Carmel won 10 of 12 events Dec. 22 as the host Greyhounds swam to victories over three opponents in the rescheduled-by-bad-weather Carmel 4-Way. The ’Hounds outpointed ninth-ranked Hamilton Southeastern 119-67, No. 27 West Lafayette 137-49, and Lafayette Jefferson 149-36.

Carmel got double wins from sophomore Mike Vinyard (1:57.92 in the 200-yard individual medley, :55.09 in the 100 butterfly) and senior Josh Jordan (:47.76 in the 100 freestyle, :53.12 in the 200 free) in addition to sweeping all three relay events.

The meet’s other two victories came from Hamilton Southeastern junior Nathan Kinney (:22.67 in the 50 free) and West Lafayette sophomore David Zoltowski (4:51.81 in the 500 free).

“We keep saying that this team is coming together, and tonight was more proof of that,” said Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen. “A huge ‘atta-boy’ to every single member of the team for 1) outstanding racing, 2) incredible cheering, and 3) great mental toughness.”

Team scores

BB Zionsville Tourney: 1A #6 Central Catholic upsets 4A #3 FC, 65-59

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

ZIONSVILLE – Senior point guard Dru Anthrop scored 20 points Dec. 27 as hot-shooting Lafayette Central Catholic held 6’8” senior post player Patrick Bade to just 12 points in the Class A No. 7 Knights’ 65-59 upset of 4A No. 3 Franklin Central at the Zionsville Holiday Tournament.

Central Catholic has now beaten the state’s second- (Indianapolis Cathedral) and third-ranked 4A schools in the last eight days.

Franklin Central, which may have gotten caught looking ahead to the Hall of Fame Tournament next week at New Castle, was ice cold from the field in missing nearly two dozen shots in the paint. The loss was the first for the Flashes, who opened the season with a half-dozen wins.

Round 1: 1A #7 Lafayette Central Catholic 65, 4A #3 Franklin Central 59
The giant killers were at it again Saturday as Lafayette Central Catholic added 4A power Franklin Central to its list of victims. The Knights downed the Flashes by six points in the first round of the tourney in a game that was nowhere near as close as the score indicates.

The recipe for CC’s latest upset was very simple: The Knights were ready to play for 32 minutes, and they shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter. Franklin Central, meanwhile, could boast neither of those attributes.

In fact, the Flashes didn’t shoot well from any place on the floor. The tall and talented crew from Indianapolis missed at least 20 shots from inside the paint.

As you might expect, this was a defensive struggle from the outset. Franklin Central did not dent the scoreboard until only 2:31 remained in the opening quarter. At that, the Flashes found themselves down only 6-2.

Central Catholic, though, began to find the range in the closing moments of the period and led 14-6 after eight minutes of play. One of the game’s storylines had already begun to appear as CC took fewer shots than their favored opponent but hit most of the ones they took.

That trend continued through the second quarter. The lead actually grew to 29-17 with less than two minutes left in the half, but Franklin Central’s defensive pressure began to pay dividends late, allowing the Flashes to close on a 7-3 run.

The teams headed for the locker room with Central Catholic holding a 32-24 cushion, but those in attendance got the feeling that Franklin Central might have finally found its footing. The Flashes seemed ready to take control of the contest.

As they say, appearances can be deceiving. CC began the second half on a lightning-quick 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 15 points at 39-24.

That might well have been the death blow to Franklin Central were it not for a little pure luck. The Flashes responded with a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to close the gap back to 42-33, yet the spurt included two 3-point baskets from Bade that were less than artistic.

The Purdue recruit’s first bucket came from the left wing and was far off-course until it banked in. The second took a huge bounce off the back of the rim and dropped through. Again, it was reason to believe the Flashes might be gaining momentum.

Again, it was not. They could do no better by quarter’s end than bring the margin back to the eight points it had been at halftime. Central Catholic headed into the final period leading 45-37.

Mark James-coached basketball teams do not go away quietly, however, and Franklin Central began the final period with renewed defensive pressure. Unfortunately, it could do nothing for its shooting woes.

The Flashes missed several opportunities in the early minutes of the quarter to cut into the margin, and eventually CC had edged to a 59-45 lead with just over two minutes to play.

Franklin Central made one last run, creating turnovers with a frenzied full-court defensive effort. The Flashes cut the lead from 14 to eight in less than a minute, but it was too little, too late.

The final six-point margin was as close as they could get. It was also as close as the Flashes had been since the late stages of the first quarter.

Anthrop led the Knights with 20 points, while running mate Chris Mills chipped in with 12 markers. Jordan Weidner led Franklin Central with 17 points, while Bade – battling a very effective swarming defense in the post – ended with only 12.

Round 1: Zionsville 69, Kankakee Valley 30
Zionsville’s defense pressure and a perfectly run sideline fast break were more than enough to overwhelm Kankakee Valley in the tourney opener, 69-40. The Eagles, whose only loss was by four points to defending 4A state champion Brownsburg, were led by the 18 points of 6’5” junior post Chris Welker.

Championship: Zionsville 63, 1A #7 Lafayette Central Catholic 61
Frustratingly for the Knights, they experienced what teams so often do after a victory so large and an effort so intense. They fell to host Zionsville in the championship game, 63-61, when the Eagles’ Jake Isenbarger nailed a jumper with five seconds to play.

Central Catholic (5-4) was led by the 18 points apiece from Mills and Anthrop. Zionsville improved to 8-1 and netted career win No. 200 for third-year Zionsville coach Shaun Busick, who got 14 points each from Isenbarger and Welker and another dozen from Chris Roberts.

Consolation: 4A #3 Franklin Central 75, Kankakee Valley 39
The Flashes rebounded nicely in the third-place game to move to 7-1 on the season with a lopsided victory. Kankakee Valley, meanwhile, falls to 2-4.

Wabash Valley Classic: 4A #4 TH South defeats S. Vermillion

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

TERRE HAUTE – Throughout the first half of Class 4A No. 4 Terre Haute South’s Dec. 26 opening game in the annual Wabash Valley Classic, Braves’ coach Mike Saylor could be heard chastising his players for running their sets for the wrong shooters.

It was a frustrating start for host South, which reached intermission with just a 10-point cushion (28-18) over a vastly outmanned South Vermillion squad. But Saylor must have passed out ID tags at halftime, the one saying “right shooter” clearly being handed to John Michael Jarvis.

The sharp-shooting junior put on a record-setting display from behind the 3-point arc in the second half, and the Braves (7-0) overwhelmed the Wildcats to the tune of 69-31. Jarvis ended the game with nine 3-pointers – six coming in the second half – and finished with 34 points.

While most of the attention from this contest will be focused on Jarvis’ incredible shooting, the real key was Terre Haute South’s defensive pressure.

South Vermillion (0-5) attempted to slow the pace by playing a compact 2-3 zone the entire game. South countered with a variety of pressure defenses, both half- and full-court, in an effort to speed up the Wildcats.

The constant defensive intensity succeeded in forcing the Wildcats into one quick shot after another. Most of the night South Vermillion players were shooting as much in an effort to simply get rid of the ball as they were in an attempt to score.

The result was way too many scoring opportunities for the Braves, and they capitalized on a high percentage of them in the final two quarters.

Nor should the play of Terre Haute South point guard Jake Odum go unmentioned. He ended the game with 12 assists, many of those perfectly placed darts to the deadly Jarvis.

Coach Saylor made it clear following the game that he believes Odum is the best-kept secret in Indiana basketball.

“The young man is under-appreciated and has been under-recruited,” said the fifth-year Braves coach. “If there is a better point guard in Indiana, I would like to know who it is.”

Terre Haute South advances to play a solid Marshall (IL) team that defeated Owen Valley, 66-52, Friday. If the brackets play out to form, the tourney should boast a tremendous Monday evening semifinal between the Braves and 1A #1 Rockville.
