GSw RANKINGS: Lawrence North, Brebeuf on rise in seventh poll

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana High School Swim Coaches’ Association has released its seventh poll for the 2008-09 girls swimming season, and a pair of Marion County schools are on the rise in the rankings released on Christmas Eve as Lawrence North moves from 19th to 12th and Brebeuf ascends from 36th into a tie for 15th with Southridge.

Otherwise, there’s not a lot of movement as we take the first of two weeks off from school. The top three teams from last week – Carmel, Hamilton Southeastern, and Center Grove – remain unchanged, with North Central (Indianapolis) and Homestead rounding out the first five.

The rankings are based on a theoretical scoring system from a 16-place meet using the times/scores of the returning Top 20 individuals from sectionals and state finals as well as the best regular-season times of the 2007-08 season.

Teams are listed by ranking followed by school and vote total. The IHSSCA’s Top 52 from Dec. 24:

1. Carmel 342
2. Hamilton Southeastern 239

INDIANAPOLIS – Odd thoughts while recovering from an absolute overload of quality football at the 2008 state finals, held for the first time at Lucas Oil Stadium …

There is no doubt that football in Indiana is improving and growing every year. The quality of football is far ahead of where it was a generation ago. The state is producing more major college prospects than ever before.

If the sport, however, is ever going to reach the state that its zealous advocates want to see and argue it has, it is going to have to overcome the barrier of predictability.

Think about it. When was the last major upset in Indiana tournament football? I’ll go a step further.

If, at the beginning of this season, someone had asked you who would be in the Class A final, wouldn’t you have said Sheridan versus Indianapolis Ritter or Rockville? In 4A, wouldn’t you have said Indianapolis Cathedral versus Fort Wayne Dwenger or Lowell? In 5A, wouldn’t you have said Carmel versus Center Grove or Warren Central?

The simple fact is that football in this state is much like volleyball: Many teams play, but only a few contend.

Now, for the 462nd time. Yes, we have a competitive balance problem with the parochial schools. Five of the eight finalists in the four lower classes were parochial schools. Three of the four titles were won by private institutions. Still, before the screaming begins again about unfair advantages and recruiting, think about a couple of things.

This marks more years in a row than I can count that the 5A title has been won by one of the “big four” teams in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference. I don’t hear anyone screaming about that being unfair. Also, almost every year we are treated to a remedy like the one Bellmont served up this time around. The moral? Just shut up and get better.

Most importantly, before people start clamoring for an administrative policy to remedy the situation, they should remember that it is an administrative policy that created it.

Lucas Oil Stadium served as a great venue for the action. It is wonderful that these young athletes get to play on such a famous field. It can certainly be argued that it is a good thing that weather cannot play a factor in these games. It is without question a magnificent facility in terms of handling the media demands.

Still, I can’t help but wonder how much it would add to the atmosphere if these games were played in a full stadium where fans become a real factor. In addition, you have to wonder how much of a financial strain “The Luke” is on the IHSAA. It cannot be an inexpensive facility to use.

Now, about those games …

Recovering two onside kicks and scoring each time should be the craziest thing any Indiana high school football fan has ever seen. In this instance, however, I am not sure even that is quite as strange as seeing Center Grove winning a game by passing the ball.

Regardless, that 5A game was worth the price of admission.

For someone who didn’t have a dog in the fight, the 1A game produced a myriad of emotions. It was, in some ways, nice to see one of the challengers finally overcome the powerful Sheridan football machine. At the same time, you had to feel sorry for Nick Zachery of Sheridan. He came in four years ago as a highly publicized phenom and played his entire career under the glare of bright lights and the burden of expectations. He has done it all with class and flair.

I guess sometimes good guys have to lose. Conversely, it was great validation for Ritter coach Ty Hunt. I know the man, and he is a class act.

About the only thing you can say about Heritage Christian winning the 2A title is that it is quite an accomplishment for a school that said it was going to put less emphasis on winning and losing. I say that tongue in cheek. Heritage Christian is a quality institution.

Bellmont will spend the next year in the role of public school hero. I’m guessing the people who are really crestfallen are Indianapolis Chatard supporters. It is one thing to get beat, but it is entirely another to lose to a team that doesn’t even go on to win the title.

Cathedral and Dwenger proved that football does not have to be entertaining to be high quality. This was a street fight between two really good teams, but it gave you flashbacks to Ohio State-Michigan games in the 1960s.

Bo and Woody would be proud, boys.
