By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its ninth set of polls for the regular season, and we have a pair of new No. 1-ranked schools in Benton Central and Vincennes Rivet.

Class 3A Benton Central takes over the top spot from Fort Wayne Elmhurst based on the former’s impressive 70-58 victory over 1A No. 5 Turkey Run and the latter’s 71-56 defeat at the hands of visiting 2A No. 2 Oak Hill. In the small-school division, Rivet ascends from No. 2 to overtake Barr-Reeve after its 52-49 defeat of the host Vikings.

The other top-ranked teams from last week – 4A Ben Davis and 2A Heritage Christian – stay the same. But there’s lots going on everywhere else this week as we prepare for the Jan. 29 sectional draw:

4A: Plainfield bumps up two spots from ninth to seventh after the Quakers’ thrilling 57-53 win over 4A previously undefeated rival Mooresville. Decatur Central and Floyd Central (tied for 12th) also enter the large-school rankings.

3A: Norwell scootches up two places into a second-place tie with Elmhurst, while Rushville rises from seventh to fifth and Evansville Memorial goes from ninth to seventh.

2A: Taylor jumps from sixth to fourth after its 69-44 drubbing of 3A host Hamilton Heights.

1A: Southern Wells ascends from ninth to seventh after knocking 2A host Garrett from the ranks of the unbeaten, 46-38.

BB: Uncle Mike’s Notebook Week 9

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Uncle Mike returned to the land of his upbringing Saturday night. He says he is in a gracious and kind mood. Personally, I’ll believe it when I see it.

At any rate, here is his wisdom for the weekend …

Northern Indiana
Leo 61, Southern Wells 35
Leo had a little help from Quincy and Rocket. You have to have really young kids to get that joke.

Rochester 85, Manchester 40
I know Chester, and I’ve always thought he made a better rock than a man.

Westview 57, Fairfield 50
I haven’t looked, but I have a dollar that says there were at least three Yoders in the scorebook. Any takers?

Culver Academies 62, Culver Community 35
Take that, townies!

Central Indiana
Ben Davis 73, Center Grove 69
The Giants finally win one of those close ones. It is about time. They have a few breaks coming their way.

Lafayette Central Catholic 60, Clinton Prairie 34
Well, at least it was closer than the football game. Then again, Dave Barrett may have better manners than the football coach.

Lawrence North 66, North Central (Indianapolis) 47
Is there anybody out there who didn’t think this was going to happen? First of all, Jack Keefer has a long memory, and it has only been a week. Secondly, the Wildcats had to set the stage for the rubber match in the sectional.

Maconaquah 57, Western 51
That is a huge upset for Maconaquah. That program really needed something like this.

New Castle 42, Huntington North 39 (2OT)
Only New Castle could take two overtimes to score 42 points … AND WIN!!

Winchester 49, Jay County 44
If you like fundamental basketball, there could have been no better game to attend on this night (or any other night, for that matter).

Southern Indiana
Bloomfield 46, Loogootee 39
As intense as Cardinal coach Ron McBride is at any given moment, I can only imagine what he was like on this night. Seriously, Ron is a mixture of drill sergeant, Vince Lombardi, your father when you stayed out too late, and that babysitter you really hated when you were 9.

Jasper 74, Forest Park 65
Forest Park would bounce back to beat a very good South Knox team Saturday. I wonder when the last time the Rangers lost two games in the same weekend … I’m guessing Roosevelt was president. And I mean Teddy.

Princeton 57, Washington 50
Princeton obviously decided to bury the Hatchet. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

BB: 4A #9 Plainfield spoils 4A #5 Mooresville’s perfect season, 57-53

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

PLAINFIELD – Class 4A No. 9 Plainfield scored the hat trick Jan. 23, snapping a lengthy losing streak to Mid-State Conference rival Mooresville with a gutsy 57-53 victory that ruined the previously undefeated Pioneers’ perfect season and lassoed control of the conference race.

Sophomore swingman Julia Henson scored 24 points to lead Plainfield (14-1 overall, 5-0 in Mid-State play), which had dropped at least 11 straight games to its neighbor just to the south on State Road 267. Mooresville (15-1, 4-1) must now hope that Decatur Central (13-5, 4-1) can forge a three-way tie for the league lead when the Hawks host Plainfield Jan. 30.

A game that saw the home-standing Quakers lead by as many as 15 points in the first half ended up with three ties in a frenzied fourth quarter. Mooresville even had a chance to tie or win the game with a 3-pointer in the last 10 seconds, but the visitors missed a layup and couldn’t corral a loose ball at their own free throw line with five seconds to play before a screaming packed house.

Six-one junior center Meagan Callaway paced the Pioneers with 19 points, while sophomore guard Jama Sharp added 18. Six-one senior post Rachel Turk joined Henson in double figures with 15 for Plainfield.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE! TILL THEN, CHECK OUT SOME VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS!!

W: Postseason draw for team, individual state tourneys

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The IHSAA on Jan. 22 released the postseason pairings for the 71st Annual Individual State Wrestling Tournament and the 14th Annual Team State Wrestling Tournament. Sectional action at 32 sites will get the tourney under way Jan. 31, with individual regionals at 16 sites set for Feb. 7, four semistates for individuals on Feb. 14, and the individual state finals Feb. 20-21 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Meanwhile, the team competiton will continue after one team champion from each sectional is crowned Jan. 31 with four-team regionals at eight sites Feb. 4. The final step in the team tourney (there is no semistate round this year) will be the eight-team state finals Feb. 28 at Center Grove.

A closer look at the team draw shows that, as has become the custom in recent years, Perry Meridian once again has not gotten any breaks. The fifth-ranked Falcons’ first-round matchup figures to be against No. 6 Bellmont, which ousted Perry two years ago in a first-round classic that went to like the 900th tiebreaking criteria before the Braves were declared the winner.

Should Perry pass that opening test, the Falcons likely would get perennial powerhouse No. 2 Evansville Mater Dei in the semifinals. A likely championship bout with top-ranked defending state champion Mishawaka would await that winner.

Other quarterfinals matchups figure to be No. 1 Mishawaka vs. No. 4 Indianapolis Cathedral, No. 3 Crown Point and No. 11 New Palestine, and No. 2 Mater Dei versus an unranked opponent in what, by far, is the easiest route to the semifinals.

Mater Dei’s probable semifinals showdown with either Perry Meridian or Bellmont likely would be packaged with an opposite bout between Mishawaka and Crown Point.

Here are the pairings, updated with start times!

GBB: 3A #12 Hamilton Heights wears down 2A #5 Lapel, 71-59

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

ARCADIA – If you happened to see a vapor trail over the skies of Central Indiana the evening of Jan. 22, it originated from the gymnasium at Hamilton Heights as the Class 3A No. 12 host Huskies and 2A fifth-ranked Lapel spent most of the night battling at a stunning pace.

The key phrase is “most of the night.” Hamilton Heights coach Kurt Ogden’s masterful use of his deep and talented bench was the difference in a 71-59 victory for the Huskies.

Those point totals are modest considering the pace at which both teams scored early in the contest. They combined to trip the scoreboard for 45 total points in the first quarter, with 27 of those coming from Lapel. The Bulldogs spent the first period cutting through a variety of Heights presses like a knife through butter and scoring at will on the other end.

Nonetheless, Hamilton Heights (14-2) continued to use its pressure tactics, and the reason why began to become evident in the second quarter. Lapel (13-2) continued to easily break the press, but the shots didn’t fall with such regularity as the Bulldogs hit just 5 of 16 from the field in the second eight minutes.

Meanwhile, the open-court style of play was doing nothing for Lapel’s own defensive effort. Heights scored 23 points in the second stanza, including the final seven, to tie the game at 40 heading to halftime.

If the second quarter had hinted at the Huskies’ strategy, the third period made it painfully obvious to the Lapel faithful. The Bulldogs opened the period on a 5-0 run, but fatigue quickly began to set in. Hamilton Heights scratched its way back to finally take the lead at 51-48 late in the quarter, and Huskies led 53-51 heading to the fourth.

If the final eight minutes had been the later rounds in a heavyweight bout, the fight would have been called on a technical knockout. The Bulldogs were gallant, but they were out of gas.

Picture-perfect fast-break passes from earlier in the game were now delivered a step late and turned into numerous turnovers. Jump shots drilled in the first half were now delivered on tired legs and rarely found the mark.

At their end, the Huskies’ fresher troops had no trouble finding and hitting open shots. Only third-year coach Ogden’s call for a four-corners offense in the final three minutes kept the final margin from reaching 20 points or more.

Neither of these squads is wanting for offensive weapons as both teams had three players with at least 13 points on the evening. Hamilton Heights’ sophomore Jessica Carr claimed game-high honors with 23 points, most of those in the second half.

The slate doesn’t get any easier this week for Hamilton Heights as the Huskies host 2A No. 6  Taylor (16-3) Jan. 24 in attempt to clinch the Mid-Indiana Conference crown. The Titans stand at 4-1 in league play, tied for second place with Northwestern (11-6) and a game and a half behind the 6-0 Huskies.

Lapel will return to action Jan. 27 with a road trip to Tri (9-6).

After the game, Ogden confirmed to Hoosier Authority that the Huskies entered the game believing they could wear down Lapel. His comments are in the video player on this page!

Sw: North Central strong in late-season showdown with Center Grove

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

North Central (Indianapolis) flexed its muscles Jan. 20 in a dual meet at Center Grove as both the second-ranked Panther boys and No. 5 girls easily outdistanced the Trojans’ No. 14 boys and third-ranked girls in this late-season showdown. The North Central girls posted a 106-80 upset victory, while the boys triumphed 115-71.

The relays were a big factor in the outcome as North Central swept all but one relay on both sides of the meet. Center Grove did break through to capture the girls 200-yard medley relay.

The big names from both squads lived up to billing, though not necessarily in the events they are best known for swimming. North Central senior Brandon Siemasko claimed victories in two events, easily capturing the 100 backstroke and the 500 freestyle. Siemasko was also part of the Panthers’ winning 200 medley relay team. On the other side, Center Grove senior Noah Pashley won both the 50 and 100 free events for the Trojans.

Allie Day, the highly regarded Center Grove sophomore, was dominating in winning the girls 500 free. North Central’s big gun on the female side, Lauren Massey, sprinted to victory in the 100 freestyle.

On this page are highlights of Pashley’s victory in the boys 50 free as well as the performance of North Central’s Alec La Mothe in winning the 200 free. Enjoy!
