A record 397 schools – six more than last year – were put into brackets
Jan. 29 in anticipation of the 34th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State
Tournament that will begin 11 days from now. The previous high of 393
schools entered the 1981 state tournament.

Sectional games are
scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 9, and run through Saturday, Feb. 14,
at 64 sites around the state. The regional round is slated for Feb. 21,
semistates will be Feb. 28, and the state finals are set for March 7 at
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

One change from previous
years is the structure of the six-team bracket. Last April, the IHSAA
Executive Committee approved a proposal from the Indiana Basketball
Coaches Association that calls for each of the two bye teams to play a
winning team from the first round. Previously, the bye teams played
each other in the second semifinal game.

In Class 4A, Sectional
12 host Ben Davis – ranked first in both polls sponsored by the Indiana
Coaches of Girls Sports Association and Indiana Basketball Coaches
Association – drew Indianapolis Manual for its opener. In 3A,
top-ranked Benton Central drew a bye and will face the West
Lafayette-Western winner at home in Sectional 20.

Three-time
defending 2A champ Heritage Christian again sits in the 2A catbird seat
and drew a bye and will take on the Indian Creek-Triton Central winner
in Sectional 43 at Triton Central. Vincennes Rivet, No. 1 in Class A,
drew North Daviess in Sectional 63 at Barr-Reeve.

Among the
other defending state champions, Class A’s Fort Wayne Canterbury will
host Elkhart Christian in Sectional 51, 3A winner Plymouth will face
South Bend St. Joseph’s in the first round of Sectional 19 at Glenn,
and 4A Carmel will meet Noblesville in Sectional 9 at Zionsville.

Four
member schools will be making their first appearances in the state
tournament, while one – Indianapolis Attucks – will compete in the
tournament for the first time since 1986. Attucks, Fall Creek Academy,
and Indianapolis Metropolitan are assigned to Class A Sectional 59 at
University. Bowman Academy and Seton Catholic will make their debuts in
Class A Sectional 49 at Washington Catholic and Sectional 55 at Tri,
respectively.

Castle (4A) and Shenandoah (2A) lead the state
with nine consecutive sectional championships, while Heritage Christian
and Northeast Dubois follow with six in a row.

BB RANKINGS: FW Luers takes over top spot in 2A

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Associated Press has released its 10th set of polls for the 2008-09 boys basketball season, and defending Class 2A state champion Fort Wayne Luers is back at No. 1. The Knights move up from third to take over for previous leader Tipton, which lost by a point to 4A Kokomo.

The three other top-ranked teams from last week (4A Bloomington South, 3A Princeton, 1A Triton) stay the same. But there’s plenty of movement all over the place nonetheless.

W: Sectional preview

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The 71st Annual IHSAA Wrestling State Tournament gets its four-weekend thang started Jan. 31 with sectionals held at 32 sites around the state. Here’s a glance at Saturday’s big sectionals (seeds courtesy of indianamat.com):

LAWRENCE CENTRAL SECTIONAL
Indianapolis Cathedral has all 14 of its wrestlers seeded among the top four at Lawrence Central, meaning the entire Fighting Irish team is favored to advance. That includes a sectional-high six No. 1 seeds as well as five No. 2s.

Lawrence North, meanwhile, has 12 wrestlers seeded in the top four. The Wildcats, who toppled Cathedral in a thrilling North Central (Indianapolis) Regional championship last year on the third criteria after a 31-31 draw, will have four No. 1 seeds and only one No. 2.

On paper, then, Cathedral’s team figures to advance to the Feb. 4 North Montgomery Regional somewhat easily. The Irish have won 28 sectional crowns, tied for eighth-best all-time with Richmond. But then, that’s why they play the games, right?

MISHAWAKA SECTIONAL
Three Top 20 schools will compete at Mishawaka: the top-ranked host Cavemen, No. 17 South Bend Riley, and 18th-ranked Penn. Mishawaka is tied for third in the state with Perry Meridian with nine consecutive sectional championships.

EVANSVILLE CENTRAL SECTIONAL
A pair of Top 10 schools will battle at Evansville Central in second-ranked Evansville Mater Dei and No. 8 Evansville Reitz. Mater Dei, which has won a ridiculous 32 straight sectional titles, will be looking to add to its overall state record of 38 sectional crowns.

STAY TUNED FOR A FURTHER SECTIONAL BREAKDOWN!!

GSw RANKINGS: Chesterton up to fourth; Wawasee on warpath to 19th

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana High School Swim Coaches’ Association has released its 12th poll for the 2008-09 girls swimming season, and the news this week is Chesterton creeping into the first five. The Trojans bump up two spots from sixth to fourth, sliding Homestead down one slot to fifth.

Elsewhere, there are some significant strides being made by several schools. At the top of that list is Wawasee, which rockets from outside the Top 50 all the way to a tie for 19th with Zionsville. McCutcheon is also on the move, leaping up from 49th to 14th.

Four other schools enter the rankings this week: Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran (35th), Muncie Central (tied for 45th with Pendleton Heights), Elkhart Memorial (tied for 50th with Lafayette Jefferson), and Ben Davis (tied for 52nd with North Montgomery).

Carmel, Hamilton Southeastern, and Center Grove remain unchanged at the top of the rankings, which are based on a theoretical scoring system from a 16-place meet using the times/scores of the returning Top 20 individuals from sectionals and state finals as well as the best regular-season times of the 2008-09 season.
