GBB: Miss Basketball Diggins heads Indiana All-Stars

South Bend Washington 5’10” senior guard Skylar Diggins has been named the 2009 Indianapolis Star Indiana Miss Basketball, and the list of Indiana All-Stars has also been announced.
Diggins, a Notre Dame recruit, received 175 of 288 statewide votes from coaches and media to easily outdistance Heritage Christian senior forward Kelly Faris for the award. The Connecticut-bound Faris earned 54 votes, with Ben Davis senior guard Alex Bentley (Penn State) third at 22.
As a senior, Diggins averaged 29 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 5.4 steals, and 2.2 blocked shots in leading South Bend Washington (26-1) to its third straight Class 4A state championship appearance. The hard-luck Panthers fell to Ben Davis this season, Carmel last year, and Castle two years ago.
Diggins ended her career with 2,790 points, the third-highest total in Indiana girls history. The Miss Basketball honor completes a postseason trifecta of being named the Gatorade National Player of the Year as well as the Naismith National Player of the Year.
Ben Davis coach Stan Benge will lead the 2009 Indiana Girls All-Star team, which will play Kentucky at Conseco Fieldhouse June 13 and at Bellarmine University in Louisville June 14. It may well be the best team in Indiana girls history.
Diggins, Faris, and Bentley lead the way, with a host of other Division I recruits on the roster as well. The team:
Alex Bentley, Ben Davis (Penn State), 5’6”, 15.8 ppg
Skylar Diggins, South Bend Washington (Notre Dame), 5’9”, 29.0 ppg

The Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches has released its third poll for the 2009 boys track & field season, and the news this week is we have half a new Top 25 following the uber-important Hoosier State Relays that were held March 21 at Purdue.
Defending state champion Ben Davis – the runaway 4A/5A winner at Purdue – remains atop the rankings, with Warren Central still second. But after that, we see massive changes.

The baker’s dozen schools dropping out of the poll: Merrillville, Southport, Anderson Highland, Terre Haute South, Homestead, Terre Haute North, Elkhart Central, Marion, Chesterton, Valparaiso, Hamilton Southeastern, Castle, and South Bend Clay.

BB SEYMOUR SEMI: 4A #1 Princeton eliminates Greensburg, 66-56

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
SEYMOUR – Many Greensburg fans will forever say that top-ranked Princeton’s 66-56 victory over the Pirates in the Class 3A Seymour Semistate hinged on one play March 21. In reality, the sequence they will point to was merely the straw that broke a very strong camel’s back.
With Princeton (28-0) leading 45-43 late in the third quarter, Greensburg (16-9) was on the attack. The Pirates got the ball into the low post and took it strong to the rim. The shot didn’t drop and, despite some contact on the play, no foul was called.
The miss triggered a Tiger fast break that ended in a layup where there was a foul. The three-point play gave Princeton a 48-43 lead, and Greensburg would get no closer the rest of the way.
In reality, the fact there was a play that late in the ballgame that could be considered critical was a great testament to Greensburg. The Pirates came into the game versus the undefeated Tigers with the worst record of any semistate squad.
They also entered without their most prolific player, Latroi Wright, due to suspension. This contest had all the earmarks of a blowout, but the Pirates had different plans.
Greensburg jumped to a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates’ discipline on offense produced several good shots in the paint, and defensively they took away Princeton’s vaunted transition attack. Left to attack solely in the half court, the Tigers looked sluggish and deteriorated into far too much one-on-one play.
You knew Princeton coach Tom Weeks was not going to let that continue, though, and he certainly didn’t. He had the Tigers step up their defensive pressure in the second quarter, and it paid immediate dividends. They also began looking to the baseline for offense, and that also worked.
The faster pace of the second quarter was to the benefit of Princeton, and the Tigers took a 31-29 lead to intermission.
Still, Greensburg wasn’t ready to fold the tent. The Pirates came out of the locker room blazing as they hit five of their first six shots in the third quarter. Unfortunately for them, Princeton had hit its offensive stride and kept pace through the blitz.
The give-and-take throughout the period led to the crucial play we spoke of earlier, and Princeton used the momentum to close the third stanza with a 50-43 advantage. Running out of time, Greensburg tried to step up the pace of its offensive attack in the final quarter.
That is what the opportunistic Princeton defense had been waiting for. The Tigers used the open-court play to create numerous turnovers that they immediately turned into layups at the other end, and Greensburg never mounted a challenge.
Princeton was led by the 25 points of senior forward Trevor George, while Greensburg got a team-high 17 markers from junior forward Andrew Dougan. Next up in the Tigers’ quest for a perfect season is the 3A championship game March 28 versus No. 7 Rochester (23-3), a 49-42 winner over 13th-ranked Delta at the Lafayette Jefferson Semistate.
After the game, Weeks acknowledged that the game turned on the defensive pressure applied by his charges. His comments are in the video player on this page.

BB LAFAYETTE JEFF SEMI: 1A #3 Triton ousts #6 Central Catholic, 50-47

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer
LAFAYETTE – Sixth-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic entered its March 21 Class A Lafayette Jefferson Semistate rematch with defending state champion Triton on a 12-game winning streak. But CC – the small-school state titleist itself in 1998, 2000, and 2003 – could not stretch that streak to 13 as third-ranked Triton prevailed, 50-47.
The Trojans (24-2) return to Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday for the 1A championship game opposite top-ranked Jac-Cen-Del (24-2), a 38-32 Seymour Semistate winner over No. 7 North Daviess.
Central Catholic (20-7) jumped out to 8-0 lead in the game’s first 2:45, including junior Chris Mills’ 3-pointer. But after a Triton timeout, the Trojans went on their own 8-0 run behind an inside bucket from senior William Keel, junior guard Benjamin Montalbano’s basket, and a three by sophomore Griffyn Carpenter to tie the game with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter.
The teams ended the first quarter deadlocked at 12 after the frantic start.
Triton got a three by Carpenter and a layup by Keel in the first 1:08 of the second quarter to go up 17-12 before CC senior Dru Anthrop stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer. But Triton tallied buckets from Keel, Carpenter, and Montalbano as well as a triple by Carpenter over the next three minutes to end the first half with a 25-22 lead.
After CC’s hot start, the Trojan defense picked up and held the Knights to just 26-percent shooting (8 of 31) for the opening half, including a paltry 4 of 18 from 3-pointland. Montalbono led the Trojans with 10 first-half points, while Anthrop paced the Knights with seven on just 3-of-12 shooting.
Central Catholic managed to take a 36-32 lead with 2:03 remaining in the third quarter, but the Trojans went on a 6-0 run to finish the period leading 38-36. Triton was the picture of efficiency in going 5 of 9 from the field while holding CC to just 6-of-17 accuracy.
With the hometown Knights looking to avenge last season’s 52-51 semistate loss to Triton, the stage was set for a nail-biting finish. Central Catholic took a 45-44 lead with 3:48 to play behind five points from Mills and four from Anthrop before Triton tied the game at 47 with 30.6 seconds remaining.
The Trojans then hit on three of four free throws down the stretch, while Anthrop’s final 3-point attempt to tie missed short. Rematch: Triton.
Central Catholic was led in scoring by Anthrop’s 19 points, while Mills added 12 in defeat. Triton was led by Carpenter’s 14 points, with Keel adding 13 and Montalbano 12.

BB SOUTHPORT SEMI: 4A #1 Bloomington South beats Franklin Central, 58-55

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
SOUTHPORT – In a contest fraught with ties and lead changes March 21, an 11-2 run to close the third quarter buoyed top-ranked Bloomington South to a tighter-than-expected 58-55 victory over Franklin Central at the Class 4A Southport Semistate.
The Panthers (25-0) move on to face sixth-ranked Fort Wayne Snider (25-1), a 63-60 Warsaw Semistate winner over No. 8 Munster, in the 4A state championship March 28 at Conseco Fieldhouse. Bloomington South will be shooting for its second state title, the first coming as Bloomington High all the way back in 1919 in an 18-15 defeat of Lafayette.
This game looked nothing like the first meeting between the two Conference Indiana schools, a 77-45 Bloomington South win at home Jan. 24. From a tie at 2-2, Franklin Central (21-6) went on a 10-4 run to lead 12-6 late in the first quarter before South hit a pair of free throws to make it 12-8 after one.
The game’s marquee players – Purdue-bound senior forward Patrick Bade of FC and the Panthers’ senior guard Jordan Hulls, an Indiana University recruit – both started off slowly as the 6’8” Bade had three points and Hulls only two heading to the second stanza.
A 3-pointer from sophomore guard Spencer Turner culminated a 7-0 spurt that gave Bloomington South its first lead at 15-12 at the 5:27 mark of the second period. There would be two more ties and four lead changes the remainder of the quarter before South settled into a 23-21 halftime lead.
Hulls and Bade both picked it up in the second stanza. The former went 3 for 5 from the field en route to six points in the period, the latter hitting 3 of 6 shots for seven points heading to the half. Despite hitting just one of eight shots from 3-point range in the first half – Bloomington South would finish a less-than-stellar 2 of 14 from long range for the game – the Panthers rallied on 7-of-12 marksmanship while limiting FC to 4 of 11 in the period.
A Bade three with 3:12 left in the third period drew Franklin Central into a tie at 30. That’s when Bloomington South finally showed its superiority by heading out on that 11-2 run spearheaded by Hulls.
After an off-balance driving bank shot by sophomore guard Darwin Davis Jr. got the lead back for South, the 6-foot Hulls maximized the Panthers’ next two possessions by hitting a long jumper following an FC turnover and converting a three-point play after FC sophomore guard Kyle James’ layin attempt was swatted away by South 6’8” junior forward Erik Fromm.
Hulls’ exuberant fist pump and subsequent free throw put the Panthers up 37-30. Bade answered with a determined drive to stop the run, but senior reserve Jake Mulinix made a layup on an assist by Fromm before Hulls inserted the dagger with a baseline jumper at :00.2 to make it 41-32.
That last play demonstrated Hulls’ headiness as he drove to the bucket, lost control of the ball, got it back, shuffled to the right, and drained the “j” as the buzzer sounded. The lack-of-panic possession finished off a fantastic third period that saw Bloomington South go 8 of 12 from the field.
Franklin Central, meanwhile, was in the midst of a deadly run of 7:25 without a bucket, and the lead grew to 13 at 49-36 with 2:35 to play. But this was a Mark James-coached team, remember, so there was no way the Flashes were going down without a fight.
How hard did FC battle in the game’s waning moments? The Flashes had a chance to cut South’s lead to two in the final 15 seconds, but Kyle James’ wide-open 3-pointer sailed over the rim and smacked the bottom of the backboard. Franklin Central then converted a layup with just a couple ticks left on the clock, but the ball rolled well out of bounds and South did not have to attempt an in-bounds play.
Hulls compensated for cold 0-for-5 shooting from 3-point land by hitting all seven of his two-point attempts in leading Bloomington South with 20 points. He was joined in double figures by Fromm, who had a game-high eight rebounds to go along with his 14 points, and Davis (12) as the Panthers hit an amazing 20 of 25 shots from inside the arc.
Franklin Central was led by the game-high 21 points of senior guard Casey Coons, who was 6 of 12 from the field and a perfect 6 of 6 from the foul line in addition to a game-high five assists. Bade finished with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting but just a 3-of-6 effort from the stripe.
