BB LAFAYETTE JEFF SEMI: 3A #7 Rochester downs #13 Delta, 49-42

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer
LAFAYETTE – Class 3A seventh-ranked Rochester went on a late 8-0 run March 21 to take control of its Lafayette Jefferson Semistate clash against No. 13 Delta, and the Zebras made sure their first state finals berth in 72 years was secure by hitting 12 of 13 free throws down the stretch of a 49-42 victory.
Rochester (23-3), coming off its first regional title in 66 seasons, got a game-high 27 points from senior Bruce Grimm in snapping Delta’s 11-game winning streak. The Zebras will face top-ranked Princeton (28-0) in the 3A final Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Behind senior guard Skylar Case’s 10 first-half points, Delta (22-5) held a slim 23-20 lead after a first half that featured five lead changes and four ties. The Eagles shot 50 percent (7 of 14) from the field in the opening 16 minutes, including 3 of 8 from behind the 3-point arc.
Rochester tied the game at 31 with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter before Delta senior Greg Heban’s layup with under two minutes on the clock made it 33-31 heading to the fourth. The set up what would be a frenzied finish for a 3A championship berth between these two evenly matched teams.
Seth Smoot gave Delta its final lead at 35-33 with 7:15 left in the game. But that’s when Rochester went out on its 8-0 run to take a commanding (relatively speaking to the rest of this game) 41-35 lead with 3:14 to play. Delta did not score again until sophomore Jake Bryan hit a desperation three from about 30 feet, cutting the gap to 41-38.
But the Zebras earned their stripes at the stripe, missing but one of their baker’s dozen chances from 15 feet away to nail it down.
Delta was led by Heban’s 11 points, while Rochester did a number on Case (10 points) in blanking him after his dominant opening half.

BB: Jac-Cen-Del: Some places it just means more

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
OSGOOD – At the Seymour Semistate last Saturday, an announcement was made between quarters of the second game informing people that Jac-Cen-Del was going to hold a pep rally when the team got home that evening.
The top-ranked Eagles had won the first game of the day, 38-32 over No. 7 North Daviess, for a berth in the Class A state finals March 28 opposite defending state champion No. 3 Triton. It was only about a 45-mile drive, so I decided to head over to Osgood to witness the celebration.
Even I, the renowned romantic of Indiana basketball, was not prepared for what I saw.
For me – and anyone else driving on U.S. 421 in the southeastern portion of the state – the celebration began about five miles from the school. That is when I ran into the back of the parade headed to the school. As the procession ambled through Osgood, there were families lining the sidewalk in front of nearly every home and open business.
I arrived at the school to find a crowd of over a thousand people waiting for the team to arrive. It seemed the local fire department had taken them on a tour of every small town in the school district. While they waited, generations of local residents slapped backs and reminisced about previous days of glory for the local lads.
The ream eventually entered the gymnasium to a thunderous ovation. (You can see that greeting in the top video of this story.) As with most pep rallies, everybody spoke, from coaches to administrators to players. When all that was finished, the real fun began.
A local hero took to the microphone. His name is Dave Porter, and he is easily in his late 80s. He was the basketball coach at Jac-Cen-Del in the late 1960s when the Eagles advanced to the Indianapolis Semistate in the non-class system. Some 40 years later, he is still a beloved icon of the community.
Current coach David Bradshaw played for Porter, and after the celebration began to break up the two sat down to talk with Hoosier Authority. (That video is to the right.) The mutual love and admiration will warm your heart.
Finally, there is a video interview with Jac-Cen-Del’s No. 1 fan. I’ll let this gentleman, Sylvester Young, speak for himself. However, you should know that he, too, is a local legend. (Click on the Videos link above the story.)
This was one of the biggest nights in Jac-Cen-Del history, and that made it one of the biggest in the history of the community. There are still some places left in Indiana where it just means more. We at Hoosier Authority were privileged to be included.

BB SEYMOUR SEMI: 1A #1 Jac-Cen-Del dispatches #7 North Daviess, 38-32

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
SEYMOUR – For a team that wants to slow the tempo of a basketball game, there is no more helpless feeling than when the tables get turned. That is exactly what happened to North Daviess in the late stages of its Class A Seymour Semistate game with Jac-Cen-Del March 21.
The top-ranked Eagles took a page out of No. 7 North Daviess’ playbook to secure a 38-32 victory and a first-ever trip to the state finals.
The first half of this game did nothing to foreshadow the twist of fate that would come in the final minutes. North Daviess spent the first two quarters doing what it does best: dictating tempo and hitting open shots. The results were in line with what they had been throughout the tourney as the Cougars grabbed an early lead and seemed completely in control.
Jac-Cen-Del (24-2) was not helping its cause with some sloppy passing that eliminated the limited chances the Eagles had to score. To say the Eagles were frustrated would be a major understatement. When halftime arrived, the scoreboard showed Jac-Cen-Del with just 11 points and facing a six-point deficit at 17-11.
At the speed this game was being played, six points might as well have been 26 points.
After the game, Jac-Cen-Del coach David Bradshaw described his halftime speech as forceful. I think the better term would be effective. The Eagles took the floor in the third quarter and wiped out two quarters of North Daviess’ work in less than three minutes, opening the second half with a 10-2 blitz to take the lead at 21-19.
North Daviess (21-6) responded with its usual steadiness, however, and the quarter ended 26-25 in favor of Jac-Cen-Del.
The tension mounted in the early minutes of the final period as both teams became increasingly cautious in attacking the bucket. With the score tied at 27, Jac-Cen-Del senior guard Blake Sutton drained a 3-pointer from the right baseline. But North Daviess responded with a score of its own, cutting the margin to 30-29 with just under four minutes to play.
That is when the Eagles decided it was time to switch roles in the game of cat-and-mouse that had been played all day. They pulled the ball out and took more than 90 seconds off the clock before cashing in on two charity tosses.
In fact, from the four-minute mark to the one-minute mark, there were just two possessions for each team. They resulted in four points for the Eagles and none for North Daviess.
The lead would eventually blossom to 36-29 before the Cougars could respond, but it was too little, too late. Jac-Cen-Del moves on to Conseco Fieldhouse for its March 28 battle with defending state champion Triton (24-2) in the 1A final. The third-ranked Trojans toppled No. 6 Lafayette Central Catholic, 50-47, at the Lafayette Jefferson Semistate.
After the game, Sutton said he was aware at the time of just how big his shot was that put the Eagles in front. His comments are in the video players on this page.
Meanwhile, a euphoric coach Bradshaw said it was impossible to describe what the victory meant to his community. His comments are also on this page.

BB SEMISTATES: Preview

From ihsaa.org
The March 21 semistate round of the boys basketball state tournament involves five former state champions, two winners from 2008, and five teams looking to advance to the state finals for the first time in school history.
Four sites will host a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. ET, with the winners of each game punching their ticket to the 99th State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Fort Wayne Luers and Triton, last year’s state champions in Class 2A and A, respectively, both survived regional challenges last Saturday and will attempt to defend their semistate titles this weekend. Other former state champs still alive are three-time Class A winner Lafayette Central Catholic (1998, 2000, 2003), 4A Bloomington South (1919), and 3A Delta (2002).
Five teams – three in Class 4A and two in Class A – are seeking to break through to the state finals for the first time. Fort Wayne Snider and Munster meet in the second game at Warsaw, while Franklin Central will take on Bloomington South in the finale at Southport. Jac-Cen-Del and North Daviess face one another in the Seymour Semistate opener. Snider, Munster, Franklin Central, and North Daviess each claimed the school’s first regional crown last Saturday.
Three teams hope to end long droughts that have reached 70-plus years since their last appearance in the state finals. Greensburg, which faces top-ranked and undefeated Princeton in 3A, is a victory away from ending the longest dry spell of the teams involved – 78 years. The 1931 Pirates were a part of the state finals when it was a 16-team affair but were defeated in their first game at Hinkle Fieldhouse, then just four years old.
North Judson, which faces Luers this weekend, hasn’t advanced to state in 75 years, and Rochester’s last trip came in 1937.
Several long winning streaks will be put on the line Saturday, too. Princeton owns the longest as the Tigers are perfect in their 27 outings this season. Bloomington South has won 24 straight, Fort Wayne Snider 19 consecutive, Winchester 17, Jac-Cen-Del 16, and North Daviess 15 in a row.

BB REG 7: Greensburg takes the title over 3A #17 N. Montgomery, 62-57

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
SHELBYVILLE – A week after upsetting third-ranked Batesville en route to a Madison Sectional title, upstart Greensburg continued on its giant-slaying ways March 14 as the Pirates knocked off No. 9 Roncalli and No. 17 North Montgomery to collect the Class 3A Regional 7 title at Shelbyville.
That’s three upsets of ranked foes in four tries, folks, with the regional crown bearing yet one more opportunity March 21 for such a feat: top-ranked and undefeated Princeton at the Seymour Semistate.
In the Shelbyville Regional championship played before a raucous crowd at William L. Garrett Memorial Gymnasium, Greensburg (16-8) followed its game plan of getting out to an early lead then tearing it up at the free throw line against North Montgomery (18-6), which got a game-high 26 points from Purdue-bound senior forward D.J. Byrd.
Forced into the bonus with 5:46 left to play and clinging to a 40-36 lead, the Pirates canned 13 of their next 15 free throws en route to an impressive 18-of-25 effort over the final period. Having gone 5 for 5 in the first half, Greensburg would finish 23 of 30 (77 percent) from the stripe on the night.
Byrd attempted to keep the Chargers in the game by scoring five of his team’s first seven points of the fourth, including an uncontested dunk at the 5:06 mark that made it 42-40. But a subsequent scoreless streak of 3:10 all but killed the Chargers’ comeback effort as the lead grew to 11 with under two minutes to play.
That doesn’t mean that North Montgomery didn’t try its hardest, however. Baskets on six consecutive possessions allowed the Chargers to creep back within 59-56 with 16.8 seconds remaining. But Greensburg junior forward Greg Dougan knocked down both double-bonus free throws a second later to put the game out of reach.
North Montgomery led only once is this contest, going up 6-3 just over two minutes into the game on a 3-pointer from senior guard Kal Airey. But Greensburg responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes and led 15-10 heading to two.
The Chargers did manage a tie at 23 on a layin from senior guard Clay Pierce as the half approached. But a three from senior forward Elijah Harter and a putback by junior forward Ty Miller just ahead of the buzzer got Greensburg back on top, 28-23, at the break.
The Pirates were stifled for the first 3:30 of the second half, but North Montgomery failed to take advantage after converting on only one of six possessions during that span. From that 28-26 spot, Greensburg would move out to a 40-32 lead on a three from senior forward Latroi Wright before North Montgomery cut it to six on a drive by sophomore guard Andrew Airey with four seconds left in the period.
That set the stage for the free throw-laden fourth quarter, which played right into Greensburg’s hands.
Wright led the Pirates with 24 points, while Dougan added 14 and Harter had 11. Kal Airey scored 20 points for North Montgomery, whose Byrd finished 10 for 25 from the field n his final game.
Semifinal 1: 3A #17 North Montgomery 62, New Palestine 49

BB SEMISTATES: Uncle Mike’s predictions for the Elite 8

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
I really started cooking last week by going 12 of 16 on my regional picks. That is not only an improvement over my sectional percentage, but also was good enough to humiliate Aylsworth (a sickly 9-7) for a second straight week. Here is how I see the semistates:
1A North @ Lafayette: Triton vs. Lafayette Central Catholic
Uncle Mike: I was there last year when Triton played a nearly perfect game to knock of CC at Crawley Center. They did that again last week in knocking off Bowman Academy in the regional. Triton is a very good team, but even the greatest of squads eventually have a day when they are not at the very top of their game. I just don’t think they have enough margin for error against Central Catholic. I will take the Knights.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: I **** at this basketball game-picking thang, which does not bode well for Louisville fans. But “Hollywood Knights” was a tremendously underrated HBO cult classic from 1980. Triton.
1A South @ Seymour: Jac-Cen-Del vs. North Daviess
Uncle Mike: North Daviess is a very difficult team to play against. However, in order for them to play the style they want, they have to be ahead. What happens if Jac-Cen-Del jumps out to the early lead? Also, as much as I **** to say it, you almost have to hope for all parties concerned that North Daviess gets beat somewhere along the line. In the long run, I am not sure a championship wouldn’t forever put “the shot” in the annals of Indiana lore, and nobody wants that.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: I prefer to think of non-infamous shots when I think of “The Shot,” McLovin – ones that I was there for. Scott Skiles’ 30-footer to send the 1982 state championship into overtime against Gary Roosevelt. Luke Zeller’s 40-foot j to down those same Plymouth Pilgrims four years ago. Those things that Claire Freeman and Bria Goss threw in two weeks ago to earn girls state titles for Heritage Christian and Ben Davis, respectively. The Nerf football I threw into the Knightstown campground hoop from 50 feet away a few years back after winning that night’s euchre tournament (and I am even worse at euchre than at prognosticating!). The point? As in so many other instances … there isn’t one. Jac-Cen-Del.
2A North @ Warsaw: Fort Wayne Luers vs. North Judson
Uncle Mike: It’s been nice knowing you, Judson. This is the end of the road. Luers could probably name the score.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” an ABBA classic that recently was in my car CD player. Seriously. (Right now, it’s Third Eye Blind, The Jayhawks, the soundtrack from “A Lot Like Love,” and The Babys “Anthology.”) 2A rout No. 1: Luers.
2A South @ Southport: Winchester vs. Brownstown
Uncle Mike: Realistically, there were only two things that could keep Winchester from making it back to Conseco: Lawrenceburg and overconfidence. Well, they faced both in the regional championship last week and survived. I will take the Golden Falcons.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: I just found out that the younger brother of one of my long-lost Lawrence friends from high school, whom I NEVER beat in one-on-one basketball, teaches in the Lawrenceburg system. Trippy. 2A rout No. 2: Winchester.
3A North @ Lafayette: Delta vs. Rochester
Uncle Mike: The power numbers say Rochester. I say if you bet against a Paul Keller-coached team in a big game, you are crazy. I like the Eagles.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: I like The Eagles too, especially that “Long Run” album. (Man, that was eighth grade!) In fact, when I was at the Columbus East gymnastics regional last Friday, they were playing a bunch of Eagles’ songs, including some from that LP. If those dorks hadn’t broken up, they woulda been the biggest band of the ‘80s. But I digress. McLovin is in love with Delta, and I am stealing all his NCAA picks for my brackets as he claims to know 20 times more about hoops than moi. He’s probably right. Delta.
3A South @ Seymour: Greensburg vs. Princeton
Uncle Mike: I love watching well-coached, fundamental basketball teams, and Greensburg is certainly both of those things. However, in this instance, they have two things going against them – Princeton is better, and Toyota is better than Honda. I will take down Evansville way.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: Enough of the cars references, already! Then again, The Cars were my first favorite rock band … Princeton.
4A North @ Warsaw: Fort Wayne Snider vs. Munster
Uncle Mike: This smells of upset. Nonetheless, there is too much romantic in me to go against Ray Sims on his farewell tour. I will take Snider.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: It smells of something, but that is the pasting that one of these teams will be receiving in next weekend’s anti-climactic 4A final. Snider.
4A South @ Southport: Franklin Central vs. Bloomington South
Uncle Mike: I will take Bloomington South. But if last week didn’t show anything else, it should have shown that Mark James will find a way to make it interesting.
Managing Editor E. Shawn Clearly Can’t Pick Even His Nose Correctly: It had better be more interesting than the last time they met, a 32-point drubbing by South two months ago. B-town.
