Base 1A FINAL: #2 Central Catholic wins third title, 14-1 over Vincennes Rivet

From ihsaa.org

INDIANAPOLIS – Second-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings and beat Vincennes Rivet, 14-1, in Friday’s Class A state championship game.

It was the eighth state championship overall for the school and third in baseball (2004, 2007). The team won its last 10 games of the season, outscored its six tournament foes by a 60-6 margin, and plated at least 13 runs in three of those contests. Tim Bordenet, who doubles as the school’s athletic director, has coached all three state championship teams.

The Knights (28-4) scored three runs each in the first and second innings, then added four in the third and four more in the fourth. Taylor Glaze, who pitched the first five innings, combined with Brett Haan to throw a one-hitter. Glaze (9-0) struck out nine of the 19 batters he faced.

CC’s Austin Munn went 3 for 4 with two RBI and scored three runs. Dru Anthrop, Reed Drysdale, Scott Windler, and Cole Hruskovich each tallied two hits, with Anthrop and Drysdale knocking in three runs each.

Derek Potter tallied Rivet’s lone hit of the game in the third inning when he singled to left field. Tyler Vieke added the Patriots’ lone run in the top of the fourth scoring from third on a throwing error. He reached first on a throwing error, moved to second on a walk, and took third on a hit by pitch.

Rivet’s Emily Montgomery, believed to be the first female to play in an IHSAA state championship game as part of a boys team, saw two pitches in her only at-bat. She swung and missed on the first and flew out to right on the second.

Vincennes Rivet (16-11), coached by Bill Beard, was making its first state finals appearance after winning its first regional and semistate crowns the last two Saturdays.

Central Catholic’s Anthrop named Mental Attitude Award winner
Dru Anthrop of Lafayette Central Catholic was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class A baseball. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to the school in his name.

The award is presented annually to an outstanding senior participant who has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability. The award is named in honor of the late L.V. Phillips, who served as the second commissioner of the IHSAA from 1945-1962.

Anthrop was the starting shortstop for the Knights and was a member of two state championship teams (2007, 2009). He was a 2007 First Team All-State selection and was named honorable mention in 2008. He also played basketball and tennis for the school.

Anthrop is a member of the National Honor Society, was the recipient of the Rotary Club Student Citizen Award, and has been on the Central Catholic Honor Roll all eight semesters of high school. He ranks eighth in his class of 49 students.

The son of John and Jana Anthrop of West Lafayette has accepted an offer as a preferred walk-on with the Purdue University basketball team where he will study business.

Base 3A FINAL: Top-ranked Andrean holds off #3 West Vigo, 6-3

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – In an entertaining contest that saw just about every play imaginable take place June 20 at Victory Field, top-ranked Andrean moved its phenomenal winning streak to 31 games by defeating No. 3 West Vigo, 6-3, in a highly anticipated Class 3A championship clash.

Playing in its fourth state championship game in the last seven seasons, Andrean (33-2) jumped on top 5-0 after three innings before holding off a determined rally by West Vigo (28-2). The win brings the Fighting 59ers their second baseball title – they scored a memorable 10 first-inning runs in a 10-1 win over Evansville Memorial in 2005 at Lafayette’s Loeb Stadium – in the school’s 50th year.

CLICK HERE FOR 3A PHOTOS FROM ACTIONSPORTSTUDIO.COM SPONSORED BY ROBERTS IMAGING!!

As with the previous game’s balanced winning effort by Heritage Christian, Andrean featured several standout players in the 87-degree downtown Indianapolis heat. Witness:

•    Senior pitcher Adam Norton, a Notre Dame recruit and an offensive statistical monster (.557 batting average, 30 doubles among his 59 hits, 54 runs batted in), went 1 for 3 with an RBI while going the distance on the mound to finish his career with a perfect 9-0 season record.
•    Senior second baseman Mike Pokers was also 1 for 3, driving in two runs with an inside-the-park home run that caromed off the top of the far-right field wall before rolling down the warning track toward center.
•    Junior third baseman Ken Mahala went 2 for 3, including a smashed line-drive homer – his 10th of the season – just right of the 405-foot sign in center to provide Andrean with an insurance run in the sixth.
•    Senior shortstop Ryan Dineen nearly hit for the cycle in going 3 for 3 after doubling in the game’s first run in the first, tripling in the third, and bunting for a single in the fifth. Ohyeah, the Eastern Illinois recruit also set the tone for an errorless defensive effort by the 59ers with several scintillating plays at short.

Stay tuned for more story! Till then, enjoy the post-game video interviews and photo gallery!!

West Vigo’s Lucas named Mental Attitude Award winner
Jeremy Lucas of West Vigo was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A baseball.

Lucas, a senior catcher and Indiana State recruit, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He was a four-year varsity letterwinner for the Vikings, made All-Western Indiana Conference three years, All-County three years, All-State honorable mention in 2008, and was ranked 17th Overall Baseball Player in State by Prep Baseball Report. He also played tennis and basketball.

The National Honor Society member finished his senior year ranked sixth in his class of 147 with a 3.75 GPA. He scored an impressive 1660 on his SAT and is a Viking Ambassador. The son of Mike and Carol Lucas also volunteers regularly in his community as the West Vigo Community Center Youth Leader and as a Youth Leader at the Terre Haute First Church of the Nazarene.

Base 2A FINAL: #9 Heritage Christian rolls past Cass, 11-3

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – Heritage Christian numbered one more student than did Cass in this year’s Class 2A enrollment, but that numerological difference ballooned to eight when it came time to decide the 2A baseball state championship June 20 at Victory Field.

In a rematch of the state’s 2A football title game won 17-14 by Heritage Christian, it once again was the ninth-ranked Eagles that piled up an insurmountable lead in cruising to an 11-3 victory. The win was the school’s first-ever in baseball and completed a spectacular all-seasons state title streak of championships in football, girls basketball, and baseball.

The stars were numerous on this day for 16th-year coach Dan Ambrose’s Eagles (25-6), who pounded out 15 hits while playing errorless defense in rolling out to a 10-0 lead after four at-bats. But none was brighter than senior Joe Perrott, who led everyone in going 3 for 4 with two runs batted in while throwing 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before allowing a pair of late runs.

That stint on the hill in replacement of junior starter David Ledbetter included an immediate bases-loaded strikeout of Cass senior catcher Colton Zeck in the bottom of the second to maintain a 6-1 Heritage Christan lead. The Eagles, who had scored three runs in each of the first two innings, then plated four more in the fourth and another in the sixth to seize a commanding 11-1 advantage.

Stay tuned for more story! Till then, enjoy the post-game video interviews and photo gallery!!

Cass’ Lee named Mental Attitude Award winner
Keith Lee of Cass was recognized by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee as this year’s recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A baseball.

Lee, the Cass left fielder at today’s game, has been a starter for the Kings’ varsity baseball team for the past three years. He was named Second Team All-Loganland as a sophomore, First Team All-Loganland as a junior and senior, and was on the Pharos-Tribune All-Star team as a junior and senior. Keith also played football and basketball for Cass.

Keith finished his high school career 13th in his class of 129 students, scoring an impressive 1400 on his SAT and carrying a 3.42 grade point average. He was a member of SADD, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, and the Letterman’s Club.

The son of Troy and Margaret Lee of Walton will attend Ball State University in the fall to study physical therapy.

St. V Spirit of Sport: Hamilton Heights track & fielder finds her stability

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

One of the reasons we love high school sports is because it isn’t always about the best against the best. Sometimes it is just about kids who love to compete trying to do their best.

To that end, they sometimes find their best does not come in the arena of competition.

Stefanie Olsavski recently graduated from Hamilton Heights High School, having competed in track & field for four years. She was a shot putter, and a dedicated one. Her senior season was a frustrating one and could have been devastating.

Toward the end of fall conditioning, Stefanie began to experience back pain that limited her ability to train. That same pain limited her ability to perform at her best during the actual season this spring. It has since been diagnosed as a chronic disorder.

While the injury made for a less-than-satisfying finish to her track career, Stefanie had more than enough to give her plenty of self satisfaction. That is because she – and anyone who knows her – realized a long time ago that her best could be experienced at a horse farm and riding stable about a mile from the school.

The place is called Agape, and it offers a unique style of therapy to mentally and physically challenged youth. The therapy involves the children riding horses under the supervision of handlers and instructors.

Stefanie was first introduced to Agape while in junior high. She immediately went home and told her mother that she wanted to help. Five years later, she is not only still helping but has decided to make working in similar circumstances a career. She has brought the same dedication she displayed toward track and her involvement in color guard to the service of others at the facility.

As you will see in the accompanying video, along the way she found the best in herself.

Base STATE FINALS: Preview

From ihsaa.org

The field of eight schools for the 43rd Annual IHSAA Baseball State Finals includes three former state champions and three first-time participants.

The Class A state championship game is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET, while the 2A, 3A, and 4A games will be contested at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m., respectively, on Saturday. All four games will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis, home of the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Friday’s Class A game features No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic (27-4) taking on unranked Vincennes Rivet (16-10). The Knights are making their third championship game appearance in the last six seasons, having won titles in 2004 and 2007. Central Catholic has outscored its five tournament foes 46-5, including a 16-run outburst in the semistate. Rivet will be seeking its first state championship in any sport after collecting its first baseball regional and semistate crowns the last two Saturdays. The Patriots’ girls basketball team came away as state runner-up in March, and a member of that team, Emily Montgomery, plays left field on the baseball team.

She is believed to be the first female in any sport to play in an IHSAA state championship game as part of a boys team.

Saturday’s 2A game between unranked Cass (19-8) and No. 9 Heritage Christian (24-6) features the same two schools that battled for the Class 2A football championship won by Heritage Christian, 17-14, last November. Both are new to the baseball state finals, however. Heritage Christian will be gunning for the school’s third state crown of this school year (the Eagles also won their fourth straight title in 2A girls basketball). Cass will be chasing the school’s fourth overall title in six years, having won in 2A boys basketball (2003) and 2A softball (2006, 2008).

The 3A final looks to be a hotly contested game between top-ranked Andrean (32-2) and No. 3 West Vigo (28-1). The 59ers, the 2005 state champs, have outscored their last five opponents 55-7, while the Vikings have outperformed their six tourney foes 52-12. West Vigo is playing in the state finals for the second time in baseball and will be looking for the school’s first championship in any sport. Vikings catcher Jeremy Lucas was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month. Andrean’s girls softball team played in its state championship contest last Saturday.

The weekend’s finale in 4A showcases unranked teams as Fort Wayne Snider (23-3) tangles with No. 11 Westfield (24-5). Snider toppled top-ranked Crown Point, 4-2, in the South Bend Semistate on Monday and returns to the state finals for just the second time after winning it all in 2006. The Panthers have won their last three games by no more than two runs and will be representing their school in a state title game for the third time this year (girls soccer and boys basketball both finished runner-up). Westfield knocked out defending state champion Decatur Central in the regional semifinal and No. 6 Castle in Saturday’s semistate and will play for the state championship for the first time since 1998, when the Shamrocks fell to Jasper for the 3A trophy. Westfield senior pitcher Kyle Kramp was picked by the San Francisco Giants during the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.

Dave Stauffer to be honored as top baseball official
Dave Stauffer of Berne is the recipient of the 2009 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association Award for excellence in the sport of baseball. Stauffer will be honored in a special ceremony at this weekend’s state finals tournament.

Each year, the Indiana High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Association, recognizes and honors an outstanding official in each of 11 sports during the school year. Stauffer was selected for this honor by a committee representing the officials associations.

During his career, Stauffer has worked 10 regionals, three semistates, and two state finals tournaments. He also played on the South Adams baseball team that finished as the state runner-up in 1972.

Stauffer, who has completed 27 years of officiating in the sports of baseball, basketball, and volleyball, has been a member of the Lime City Officials Association. He served as its baseball vice-president from 1988 to 1994 and on the board of directors for four years.

Stauffer attended Indiana State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business. He has been engineering new product design at Elkhart Products Corporation for 23 years and has been with the company for 30 years. He has been married to his wife, Anna, for 28 years. They have two children, Todd and Jenna.

In Indiana, there are 26 associations made up of men and women who give up much of their personal time to assist in providing wholesome, worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student athletes in our state. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.

BG STATE FINALS: Results from Round 2

Second-ranked Avon was the picture of consistency June 16-17 in capturing the 73rd Annual Indiana High School Boys State Finals held at The Legends. The Orioles shot a 293 in Round 1 and came back with a 294 in Round 2 to tie the state record at 587 in downing runner-up No. 6 Evansville North by two strokes.

Individually, Mishawaka Marian senior Adam Sumrall scalded the par-72, 6,736-yard Franklin with a 6-under 66 Wednesday. That great Day 2 total pushed the 2007 state runner-up to the title by two strokes over Evansville North junior David Mills (71-71–142) and Round 1 leader Patrick Rodgers (69-73–142), a sophomore from Avon.

BB: Boys Indiana All-Stars complete Kentucky sweep, 64-49

By Jeff Washburn

LOUISVILLE – He is not yet at future Purdue teammate Chris Kramer’s level, but Indiana All-Star forward D.J. Byrd showed June 14 why he has the potential to be the Boilermakers’ next great defender.

With the North Montgomery standout limiting Kentucky Mr. Basketball Jon Hood to 2-of-12 shooting and only eight points, Indiana completed a two-game sweep, 64-49, in Knights Hall on the Bellarmine University campus.

West Lafayette coach David Wood’s Indiana All-Stars limited Kentucky to its poorest offensive output since 1948, when Indiana registered a 70-47 victory. Kentucky scored only 20 first-half points and finished 17 of 60 from the field.

“It was just limiting Jon Hood’s touches,” said Byrd, who had 10 points, an assist, and a steal. “We all know that he can score and is a good player. But when you take away some of his touches by denying him the ball, that’s less times that he has a chance to score.

“That was my main goal coming into this game. Offensively, I didn’t hit a lot of shots, but over the next six months, I am going to build a consistency of playing defense and also being able to do offense by getting stronger and having more endurance.”

The 6-foot-6 Hood, who averaged 28.8 points a game during his senior season at Madisonville-North Hopkins, scored 20 points in Indiana’s 78-65 victory on Saturday night in Conseco Fieldhouse. But when Byrd started on the University of Kentucky recruit Sunday, the Kentucky All-Stars never found any offensive rhythm.

Kentucky was 5 of 24 from the field during the first half, when Indiana built a 37-20 lead. Kentucky never got closer than 12 during the final 20 minutes.

Indiana, which has won 19 of this series’ past 22 games, got 14 points and eight rebounds from Indianapolis Cathedral forward Errick Peck. Byrd was Indiana’s only other double-figure scorer. Indiana Mr. Basketball Jordan Hulls from Bloomington South was 1 of 9 from the field but added five rebounds and five assists.

“Hood is sort of Kentucky’s motivation,” Byrd said. “He kept them going. He got frustrated, and then their team had a hard time coping with that.

“That’s what I needed to do for our team to win.”

Purdue recruit Patrick Bade of Franklin Central finished with two points and two rebounds while helping Indiana dominate the interior defensively. Indiana outrebounded Kentucky 51-46.

“We executed defensively very well,” Bade said. “We came in and stuck to our game plan, which was to play defense and go inside on offense, then just rebound. It all came through for us.

“We got great games from Peck, (Batesville’s) Colt Ryan, and (Mooresville’s) Matt Kenney. Nobody has discovered them yet, but they played well in both games.”

Wood was shocked to learn that Kentucky hadn’t failed to break the 50-point barrier in 61 years.

“I didn’t know that, but that feels really good,” Wood said. “Everybody knows I like defense. We did about three defensive drills all week. We asked our guys a couple of things on defense, and they went out and made that work.

“We were trying to put a man and a half on Hood and keep them out of the lane. We did a pretty darn good job of that. We started D.J. tonight because of his defense. We felt Byrd on Hood was a great matchup on Saturday night. Hood is a handful.”

Indiana went on a 30-10 run to take a 30-13 lead with 4:07 remaining in the first half on back-to-back 3-pointers from Ryan and Jake Odum of Terre Haute South.

A 3-pointer from Hulls gave Indiana a 60-39 advantage with 6:19 remaining, the Hoosiers’ largest lead.

GBB: Girls Indiana All-Stars complete Kentucky sweep, 85-75

By Sam King
jconline.com

LOUISVILLE – Florida recruit Lily Svete was comfortable sitting on the bench and rooting for her Indiana All-Star team to come back.

But Svete certainly didn’t shy away from being the hero June 14. The Penn graduate hit two crucial 3-pointers midway through the second half to help Indiana rally from an 11-point halftime deficit and defeat Kentucky, 85-75, at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.

“It was the spark that we needed,” Connecticut recruit Kelly Faris said. “Our confidence as a whole boosted right there.”

The critical baskets came after Miss Basketball Skylar Diggins was forced to the bench with four fouls. Benton Central grad Skyler Gick replaced Diggins and helped set up Svete’s heroics.

“Gick is a great player, and she has great court vision,” Svete said. “She isn’t the biggest, fastest, or strongest girl out there, but she knows what she does best and she is very good at it.

“She finds people you don’t think are open.”

Gick finished with two points, one rebound, and one steal in 11 minutes of action in helping the Indiana All-Stars sweep their Kentucky counterparts for the third time in four years. Kentucky won both girls games a year ago.

“I think this game tested us, and I think we proved ourselves,” Gick said. “They were very physical, and that is something we had to deal with.”

Indiana trailed 43-32 at halftime before Diggins took over.

The national high school player of the year scored 25 of her 29 in the second 20 minutes, adding five rebounds and four steals as Indiana outscored Kentucky 53-32. Diggins had six points and assisted on an Alex Bentley basket during a 15-3 run to begin the second half.

DeAirra Goss scored on a spin move in the lane with 14:29 remaining to give the visitors a 47-46 lead.

Indiana used a full-court press to perfection to limit Kentucky’s offense. Indiana forced 22 turnovers, 19 of which were steals.

“We came out and played with some more intensity (in the second half),” Indiana coach Stan Benge said.

After a free throw tied the game at 47, Svete hit a deep three and another from the wing in a 54-second span. Kentucky took a 66-65 lead, but a Diggins’ 3-pointer put Indiana ahead for good.

Diggins’ 54 points in the two-game series ties her with Kentucky’s Geri Grigsby (1977) for second most in history. Indiana’s Tiffany Gooden had 55 in the 1994 series.

Penn State recruit Bentley was the only other Indiana player in double figures, scoring 12. Faris tied Diggins with a game-high four rebounds.

Ashley Rainey had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the hosts, and Kentucky Miss Basketball Adia Mathies had 19 points.
