BB: Cold shooting dooms Delta in 58-35 loss at Pendleton Heights

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
PENDLETON – They say the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores. The folks at Pendleton Heights aren’t likely to argue that wisdom right about now. They might, however, add a second piece of their own.
Nothing goes better with sophomores than a classy, versatile senior who has been through the wars. The Arabians’ talented sophomores and senior leader Nathan Hendershot combined Nov. 28 to blast Class 3A No. 18 visiting Delta, 58-35, in a Hoosier Heritage Conference clash.
The victory moved Pendleton Heights to 2-0 on the campaign. It was the opener for the Eagles. That fact goes a long way in describing this contest.
For most of the night, the Arabians looked like a team that had a much better idea of what it wanted to accomplish than did Delta.
Pendleton began the game is a solid man-to-man defense that made it difficult for Delta to get clean looks at the basket. The Eagles compounded the problem by not shooting well, and by the end of the first period the Arabians had bolted to a 15-4 cushion. That lead grew to 27-12 at intermission.
The guard tandem of sophomore Kendall Waters and Hendershot did most of the offensive damage. That stayed consistent through the entire evening as Waters finished with a game-high 17 points with eight rebounds and five assists and Hendershot added 13 points.
It is never going to be easy, though, when you play a Paul Keller-coached basketball team, and the veteran Delta mentor wove his magic at halftime. Delta opened the third quarter far more aggressively on defense and starting driving the ball more on offense. The strategies worked, and the Eagles dominated play in the period.
But they could not shake the bugaboo of cold shooting, and the change in momentum went mostly for naught. Despite holding Pendleton Heights to just five points in the first six minutes of the quarter, Delta could close no closer than 32-21.
When Hendershot closed the stanza with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, the Arabians had withstood the charge and led 40-24.
The fourth quarter was time to experiment with lineups on both sides as the verdict never came into doubt. Pendleton Heights coach Brian Hahn wanted to see improvement defensively after not being impressed with his team’s effort on that end in the opener. He spoke with Hoosier Authority after the game and acknowledged the Arabians turned it up a notch.
Meanwhile, Keller took the defeat in stride. He said the Eagles will be a work in progress as they rebuild after heavy graduation losses.
Next up for Pendleton Heights, which also got 12 points from Kellen Dunham and 11 from Ryan Albers, is a Dec. 1 home game at 7:30 p.m. ET against upstart Westfield. The Arabians then will travel Dec. 5 for another 7:30 contest at Hamilton Southeastern.
Delta will travel to Cowan Dec. 4 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff, then return home Saturday to tackle Muncie South at 7:45 p.m.
The box score:

FB 2A FINAL: #13 FW Luers comes back for 24-17 win over #3 Monrovia

From ihsaa.org
INDIANAPOLIS – No. 13 Fort Wayne Luers made a defensive stand at its own goal line with 6:32 left to go, then melted away the remaining clock for a 24-17 victory over third-ranked Monrovia in the Class 2A state championship game Nov. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
(CLICK HERE FOR ACTION PHOTOS FROM OUR MARK GRICIUS, WITH EQUIPMENT PROVIDED BY ROBERTS IMAGING … AND CHECK THE PHOTO GALLERIES FOR PICS FROM JEFF HEMMER!!)
Leading by seven, Luers’ Jordan Presley and Steve Kiermaier stuffed Monrovia’s Garrett Johnson inside the 1-yard line on 4th and goal from the 1. Luers then converted on a pair of crucial third-down plays, including a 29-yard pass from James Knapke to Kameron Mack on 3rd and 6 from its own 38.
“They were able to sustain that last drive, and we just couldn’t get it back,” said third-year Monrovia coach Kevin Hutchins, who led the Bulldogs to their first state championship game in any sport. “It’s hard, man. We literally came up a foot short.”
It was the eighth state championship for Luers (10-5) and the fourth this decade. All but one have come with coach Matt Lindsay at the helm. Lindsay is the third coach in state history with at least seven state championships.
“We came back against them how we have been doing it all tournament – guts, heart, and hard work,” Lindsay said.
Luers running back Ken Mullen scored on runs of three and two yards, the latter of which came just 17 seconds before halftime to cut the Monrovia lead to 17-14.
“I never wanted to get too far behind Monrovia because they can control the ball,” Lindsay said. “The first half, we played into their hands until we got that late score before halftime.
“We then started to feel pretty good about ourselves. We felt really confident at halftime.”
After an offsides penalty preceded a short kickoff by Monrovia that was fielded at the Luers 44, Alex Stronzcek nailed a 44-yard field goal at the 7:01 mark of the third quarter to knot the game at 17-17.
Steve Kiermaier scored the go-ahead touchdown for Luers on a two-yard burst with 20 seconds left in the quarter. That followed Monrovia’s second straight less-than-ideal second-half possession that ended with a turnover on downs at its own 47 on a failed 4th and 2.
“This state title was so unexpected,” Lindsay said. “We’ve had so many ebbs and flows over this year.”
“We just got on a roll, and right now I know that this team is pretty dog-gone good. We weren’t there all year, that’s for sure.”
Monrovia (14-1), which rolled up 309 yards rushing in the loss, had taken an early 3-0 lead on Dean Reeves’ 26-yard field goal on the game’s opening possession.
Mullen’s three-yard score with 1:44 left in the first quarter got Luers on the board for a 7-3 advantage.
Monrovia then tallied 14 points on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter as Johnson scored from three yards away and Austin Parks (20 carries, 167 yards) rumbled in from a yard out.
“There’s nothing that our boys need to hang their heads about,” Hutchins said. “We had an unbelievable year – we played with the best of them in 2A.”
Monrovia’s Connor named Eskew Mental Attitude Award recipient
Timothy Connor of Monrovia was named winner of the 2009 Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award for Class 2AfFootball by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to the school in his name.
The award is presented annually to a senior in each classification who best demonstrates excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability. Since 1989, more than $575,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
Connor is a senior class officer, National Honor Society officer, and a leader of the Teen Student Leadership Academy. He is an active church volunteer and a tutor, and he’s led clothing drives.
The football team captain, Connor was a two-year starter at quarterback and free safety as well as a four-year starter on the boys basketball team. He was named All-West Central Conference in basketball and football as well as a two-year member of the Academic All-Conference team.
Connor ranks fourth in his class at Monrovia and carries a 4.06 GPA on a 4.0 scale. He plans to attend Wabash or Franklin College and major in sports medicine. The son of Tim and Julie Connor of Monrovia has been named to the honor roll all four years of high school.

FB 3A FINAL: #2 West Lafayette downs #8 Ev. Memorial, 24-10

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Do-everything senior Daniel Wodicka carried 19 times for 115 yards and completed 13 of 24 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown Nov. 28 as second-ranked West Lafayette captured its second state title with a 24-10 victory over No. 8 Evansville Memorial at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Wodicka, who was named the 3A Mental Attitude Award winner, helped cap off a perfect 15-0 season for the Red Devils, who iced the game with a long drive resulting in a field goal late in the contest after Memorial (11-4) had bounced back from a 21-3 halftime lead to cut its deficit to 21-10.
West Lafayette benefited from four Tiger turnovers and did an outstanding job of hemming in standout Memorial quarterback Grant Gribbins, who finished 20 of 32 but had only 123 yards and was intercepted twice.
“We knew the key would be getting pressure up the middle on the quarterback,” said ninth-year Red Devils coach Marshall Overley. “We had a good offensive game plan, and coach Roseman got that defense goin’.”
Junior Aaron Woodard carried 17 times for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns for West Lafayette, which also got seven receptions and 101 yards with a TD from senior wide receiver Andrew Pekny.
The victory enabled the Red Devils to finish with the state’s best record over the last two seasons at 26-1. It also marked the first time two teams from Tippecanoe County have won state championships in the same year (1A No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic was the other in Friday’s 52-0 win over third-ranked Fountain Central).
Stay tuned throughout the weekend for wall-to-wall coverage via stories, video, and pictures. Till then, enjoy these photos from our Mark Gricius!

FB 1A FINAL: #2 Central Catholic obliterates #3 Fountain Central, 52-0

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
INDIANAPOLIS – A heavy underdog in any sport must do two things to pull off the upset. Above all, it must protect the ball – it cannot give the favorite extra opportunities. Then, it must prevent the big play – make the favorite earn its victory the hard way, a little at a time.
Unfortunately for third-ranked Fountain Central, the Mustangs were able to do neither versus No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic in the Class A state title game Nov. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The result was a 52-0 verdict for the Knights, who completed a perfect season at 15-0 in winning the school’s third football title.
(CLICK HERE FOR ACTION PHOTOS FROM OUR MARK GRICIUS, WITH EQUIPMENT PROVIDED BY ROBERTS IMAGING!!)
The contest started well enough for Fountain Central as the Mustangs staved off the Knights’ first drive despite Central Catholic starting with very good field position. After failing to move, the Mustangs again held Lafayette’s powerful offense in check and forced a second punt.
That punt might have been the unsung, key play in the entire contest. Chris Mills, better known for his quarterbacking, booted a beauty that pinned the Mustangs down on their own 5-yard line.
What followed was the big play Fountain Central was trying to avoid. CC’s Scott Windler intercepted a Brian Moore pass on the very first play, and suddenly the Knights were goal to go. Two plays later, Mills threaded a seven-yard scoring pass to Cody Christopher, and Fountain Central’s long day had commenced as the Knights took a 7-0 lead.
Despite being handled at the line of scrimmage, Fountain Central kept the deficit at one score through the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs actually began to move a bit in the early moments of the second stanza, but disaster struck again.
Another interception stopped a Fountain Central drive at the Central Catholic 33. Three plays later, the second big play was unleashed by the Knights. This one was a 59-yard pass and run from Mills to Danny Anthrop.
It was 14-0, and the deficit would grow quickly before halftime.
On its next possession, CC traveled 67 yards in just four plays as Mills completed his third touchdown pass of the half. This one covered 33 yards to Marc Withers, and the score was mounting at 21-0.
The Knights added one more before the break. Fountain Central attempted a fourth-down conversion near midfield and failed with just under five minutes to play in the opening half. Four plays and 49 yards later, Mills snuck across from the 1, and the tally was 28-0.
“The first quarter, I thought the defense carried us – they gave us a short field, and we were able to score off of it,” said second-year CC coach Kevin O’Shea. “It took us a little while to figure what was going on on offense.
“Once we did, our athleticism took over.”
Mills, the talented Knights’ signal caller, ended the half 10 for 16 with three scoring strikes.
“Our defense came up with some big plays like I expected them to,” Mills said. “Our offense then came out and put some points on the board.
“We had a great game plan and a real good week of practice. I knew our guys would be real fast and they couldn’t keep up with us.”
The more telling statistic, however, came from the Fountain Central side of the ledger as the Mustangs rushed the ball 15 times in the opening two quarters for a total of only 17 yards.
The same lack of success at the line of scrimmage that led to that low total had Moore running for his life on most of his pass attempts. He ended the half 5 of 12 for just 54 yards and with two interceptions.
Any chance of the Mustangs clawing back into the contest was personally squashed by Anthrop in the third quarter.
The sophomore struck on the ground early in the quarter, finishing a short Knights’ drive with a 12-yard scoring jaunt. Four minutes later he was on the receiving end of Mills’ fourth touchdown pass of the day, this one from 32 yards. Two minutes after that, Anthrop scampered 56 yards around the left end for another Knights’ score.
Suddenly it was 49-0.
“Danny (Anthrop) … for a sophomore to come in and in this big a game setting was fantastic,” O’Shea said.
Central Catholic added a field goal midway through the fourth quarter for the final tally. Mills saw little action in the final 12 minutes, and the Knights did not attempt a pass in the quarter. Mills ended the day 12 of 18 for 230 yards and four touchdowns.
“We knew how good they were – they’re a great ball club,” said fourth-year Fountain Central coach Rick Malone, whose Mustangs remarkably rebounded from a 3-7 season last year to finish 14-1. “They are a very quick team, and when you see it on film you don’t really get a feel for how fast they really are.
“We gave them a short field in the first half four times, and we just can’t do that. It just killed us.”
Central Catholic’s Burns wins Mental Attitude Award
Greg Burns of Lafayette Central Catholic was named winner of the 2009 Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award for Class A football by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.
Burns is a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Super Bowl, and Young Life Youth Group. He has been named to the honor roll each semester and was named outstanding student in several of his classes. He has volunteered at the El Salvador School Supplies Drive and Jubilee Christmas Event among several other service projects.
Burns has helped the Knights to four consecutive Hoosier Heartland Conference championships. The four-year letterman earned recognition as the Most Valuable Defensive Back for the Knights after the 2008 campaign, and he also is on the track & field team.
Burns ranks second in his class at Lafayette Central Catholic and carries a 4.04 GPA on a 4.0 scale. The son of Tom and Mary Ann Burns of Lafayette plans to attend Purdue University and major in engineering.

Predictions: Semistate football picks review, state finals selections

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
With all three Hoosier Authority “experts” going 7-3 in last weekend’s semistate picks, the sad truth is that Executive Director Mike McGraw maintained his three-game lead over Eric Eaton and four-game advantage over myself.
A look back at our semistate results:
Mike: -3 (Dwenger, Cathedral; Chatard)
Shawn: -3 (Center Grove; Dwenger; Chatard)
Eaton: -3 (Dwenger, Cathedral; Chatard)
If we total ‘em all up (last week’s semistate picks along with regionals and the three-week sectional results), we get this updated mass of ugliness for the postseason:
Mike: -22
Eaton: -25
Shawn: -26
So what does all that mean? It means I have to pick at least four different winners to catch McGraw. Which I am about to do.
To the final five picks!
CLASS 5A
Mike: Carmel. The turnover bug is bound to bite Warren Central somewhere along the line, and Carmel seems to be the beneficiary of that sort of thing all the time.
EZ-E: Warren Central
E. Shawn: Coach John Hart was the head coach at Evansville Reitz two years ago when the Panthers won the 4A title. As you will see, there is an Evansville-related theme to my final round of picks. Warren Central.
CLASS 4A
Mike: Evansville Reitz. Like I am going to pick against somebody that just whacked Cathedral by 21. I don’t care if Hughes was hurt or not. That is a ****-kicking.
EZ-E: Reitz
E. Shawn: My aunt died this week, and I went to her burial the day before Thanksgiving near Evansville. Upon chatting with some long-lost relatives afterward, the conversation turned to their excitement about Saturday’s championship games involving Reitz and Memorial. It just seems, then, that picking the Evansville schools is the best way to honor the memory of the incredibly unselfish and giving human being that was Katherine Mottley. Reitz.
CLASS 3A
Mike: Evansville Memorial. Should be a great game. In the end, I like Memorial’s defense a little better.
EZ-E: West Lafayette
E. Shawn: See 4A explanation above. Memorial.
CLASS 2A
Mike: Fort Wayne Luers. I can’t get past the schedule difference. Also, Monrovia pulled one big upset with the win over Ritter. I don’t know if they have two of them in ’em. It hurts me to make that pick.
EZ-E: Monrovia
E. Shawn: Since I agreed with McGraw (gross) on Reitz above, that means I HAVE to take Monrovia. No problem! The Dags.
CLASS A
Mike: Lafayette Central Catholic. It won’t be as easy as most people think.
EZ-E: Central Catholic
E. Shawn: Fountain Central it is!

Byrne Notice: Journal from standout senior heading to Nike Nationals

A few weeks ago, we did a well-received feature on HoosierAuthority.com about the cross country team at North Harrison High School. The leading runner on that squad is a young man named Tyler Byrne.

Since our piece, North Harrison runners competed in the NXN Midwest Championships in Terre Haute, and Tyler finished second Nov. 15 in a record-breaking performance – 15:14, just seven seconds behind winner Zach Wills of the Mason XC Club. Tyler thus qualified to travel to Portland for the Nike Nationals in December.

(Here is a link to some video coverage of the event.)

Hoosier Authority asked the Cougar senior if he would supply us with a journal of his experiences during this postseason run. Following is the first installment of that journal
Going into the Nike regionals race, I was looking forward to getting back in the racing atmosphere. Two weeks previous at the Indiana state meet, I did not perform as well as I would have liked to and did not feel as if I was at 100 percent, so I set my sights on my next race: the Nike regionals.
In the weeks prior to the race, I got back into higher-intensity training and longer runs. With a week until Nike, I was finally getting to the point where I felt healthy again, and my body was getting back into the groove of things. With a good week of training before the race, I was feeling that if I ran a good race, I would be able to make the nationals team.
When Race Day came, I had a game plan in mind of what I wanted to do during the race. I knew the No. 2 two kid in the nation, Zach Wills, was in the race and expected him to go out faster than the rest of the field. So, I just wanted to just stay in the lead pack and put myself in good position for the end.
When the race started, I tried to set myself up in good position for the first turn and get out near the front. Wills immediately gapped himself from the rest of the field, but I set back not wanting to risk being burned out at the end. Coming through the first mile, I felt extremely smooth. At the halfway mark, Wills was leading the race with a strong margin, but I was in the lead pack that had been established behind him.
Still feeling very comfortable at this point, I kept a strong pace up the slight incline just after the halfway point on the course. Then, slightly after the two-mile mark, I started to prepare myself for a change in pace.
After going over the second-to-last set of hay bales, I picked up the pace and pulled away from the lead pack a bit. I saw that I was closing the gap on Wills and started to try to work my way up to him. Coming down the final stretch of the course, I made one last surge, but it was not enough.
Crossing the finish line, I saw that my time was right around 15:15 and, even though I had gotten second, I was pretty happy. Plus, to my surprise, they were handing out ice cream at the end of the shoot, and that is a good way to top off anything! Standing up on the podium with the other four runners who would make up our Midwest team was also a great feeling of accomplishment.
Being up there had been a goal of mine, and I had finally reached it.
After everything was said and done, I was ready to get back home and continue my training for the weeks to come. After the race on Sunday, I took Monday off from training for a recovery day. Coming out on Tuesday, I just ran about eight miles at a medium pace. Then on Wednesday, I jumped back into the higher-intensity training with a hill workout that was good for both my endurance and turnover.
On Thursday, I once again did a longer recovery run in preparation for a tough day to follow. Friday, after a good warm-up, I jumped on the track to run a two-mile for time. Aside from being a good workout, the main purpose was to get a feel for the faster pace that I would have to endure in the upcoming races.
At the end of the eight laps, I actually ended up running my personal-best time with a 9:22. The workout went great and has given me some more encouragement.
To wrap up the week, I went out Saturday morning for an easy six-mile run with six 200-meter strides at the end to loosen my legs up and work out the kinks.
STAY TUNED, CROSS FANS!!
