Third-ranked Perry Meridian won five events and finished second in six others Nov. 21 in once again capturing the annual Capital City Classic at Beech Grove.
The Falcons totaled 275 points to finish first among the eight schools wrestling, well ahead of No. 23 runner-up Jeffersonville (199.5). No. 15 Warren Central (185.5) took third, with the host Hornets (140) fourth, Franklin Central (129) fifth, and Columbus North (120) sixth.
Perry Meridian earned victories at 103 (freshman Nick Bova), 112 (sophomore Jared McKinley), 140 (sophomore Kirk Johnson), 152 (senior Jacob Tonte), and 160 (junior Jordan Robinson). No. 10 (at 103) McKinley did not give up a point all day at 112, and neither did No. 10 (at 171) Robinson at 160.
The Falcons’ runner-up finishes came at 119 (junior Michael Clem), 125 (senior Jason Simmons), 135 (Kenny Harris), 145 (junior Derek Harz), 189 (sophomore Andre Richards), and heavyweight (junior Devin Schaefer).
Other impressive performances were turned in by Warren Central senior Brandon Wright – the state’s preseason top-ranked wrestler at 119 – at 125, his sophomore teammate Jonathan Decker (#16 at 140) at 145, and second-ranked senior Michael Johnson-Jones with a pin in 74 seconds of the No. 6 Richards at 189.
Bloomington North senior Shawn Miracle was a 6-1 championship victor over Beech Grove senior Nick Roberts at 130.
“We’re young in some spots, but I still thought we’d place a place or two higher,” North coach Perry Summitt told heraldtimesonline.com. “It’s a good gauge for us to see where we are at. Some of our kids are just two weeks removed from football.”
