BSw STATE FINALS: Whitaker, two other defending champs return
Posted on 24 February 2010 by .
From ihsaa.org
Three individuals, including Chesterton star Kyle Whitaker, return for this weekend’s 73rd Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Ninety-five schools are represented in this year’s meet, including Chesterton, the two-time defending state champion.
With Whitaker, the third-ranked Trojans figure to be in contention once again. The senior has already written plenty of history in his first three years in the pool, and more is likely to occur Feb. 27.
Whitaker will be looking to become the first individual in state finals history to win the 200-yard individual medley all four years. He set the national record in last year’s finals (1:45.25) and, as expected, enters as the top seed this year at 1:49.13, more than four seconds faster than the next-best time.
He’s also the top seed in the 500 freestyle (4:33.50), an event he has not won previously at this meet. He was more than two seconds better than anyone else heading into Friday night’s preliminaries, where he set a state record by more than four seconds with a 4:21.55.
Whitaker had won the last three butterfly crowns but is not entered in the event in 2010. He has already won nine state titles during his career including relays, and only two individuals – Carmel’s Jason Lancaster and Grant Wieczorek – have achieved more in state history.
Lancaster won 12 from 1991 to 1994, while Wieczorek won 11 from 2001 to 2004. Whitaker’s six individual crowns ranks second only to Lancaster’s seven, so Whitaker could topple that mark on Saturday as well.
Chesterton junior Tyler Fozkos is the defending state champ in the 50 freestyle and sat a full second behind top seed Kameron Chastain of Seymour, but Fozkos nailed down the No. 1 seed Friday night with a :20.82, some .23 better than Chastain. Chastain entered the weekend with the top time in the 100 breaststroke (:56.20) a swell but also finished second in the prelims there by .84 to Terre Haute South’s Addison Bray (:55.17)
Hamilton Southeastern senior Nathan Kinney, last year’s winner in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, returns in both events. Kinney started the weekend second in the freestyle (:46.75) and sixth in the back (:52.41).
Preliminary swimming heats got under way Feb. 26, with the Top 16 in each event returning for competition Saturday and the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors.
All diving will take place Saturday beginning at 9 .m. ET, with the Top 21 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the Top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each.
All championship and consolation finals, including diving, will commence at 1:05 p.m. Saturday.

LAWRENCE – Third-ranked Columbus North registered 12 of 30 top-six finishes Feb. 20 to defend its title at the seven-team Conference Indiana Tournament held at Lawrence Central.
The Bull Dogs’ team score of 110.075 was 2.45 points better than the runner-up No. 8 host Bears (107.625), with seventh-ranked Franklin Central (107.15) taking third. Bloomington South (104.325) finished fourth, well ahead of arch-rival Bloomington North (89.85), Perry Meridian (87.125), and Southport (61.625).
Lawrence Central senior Camille Hayes was the star of the day, capturing conference crowns in the balance beam (9.7) and the floor exercise (9.6) on her way to the all-around title with 38.2 points. Senior teammate Jessie Leko took the day’s other two events in winning the vault (9.7) and the bars (9.625).
“I thought the girls had good performances,” said LC coach Barbi Kern. “We are getting ready for the last four weeks of the season, and the girls know that great performances win! I thought that all of the girls gave it their all, and it showed with a second-place finish.
“We’ve been telling Kylie Culley all season long that we really need her all-around score to be in the 32s, and she got it this weekend (with a 32.05). She added a few new skills to floor and vault, and it all counted!”
But coach Sandy Freshour’s Columbus North squad got second-place finishes from Cassie Funcheon in the vault (9.5) and the bars (9.525) – Funcheon was also third in the floor with a 9.1 and placed fourth in the all-around at 36.875 – while teammate Tessa Lane tied for second in the vault (9.5) while placing third in the beam (9.3), the floor (9.1), and the all-around (37.125).
The real key to the Columbus victory was consistency on all apparatus. The Bull Dogs’ highest score came on the vault at 29.000, and their lowest was on bars at 26.950 – that is incredibly consistent at the high school level.
Lawrence Central followed the Bull Dogs’ with nine top-six finishers, while Franklin Central landed eight paced by Molly Moran’s second-place 9.45 in the beam.
