BB: Postseason draw held for 100th rendition of ‘Hoosier Hysteria’

For the 100th time, Indiana high school boys basketball teams were placed into sectional brackets in revealing the road to a state championship. The Feb. 21 blind drawing took place in the same place it will end March 27: Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Four hundred three teams – one more than last year – will begin play next week. It’s the most since the same number of teams entered the 1976 state tournament.
Sectional games are scheduled to begin Monday, March 1, and run through Saturday, March 6, at 64 sites around the state. The regional round is slated for March 13, with semistates taking place March 20 and the state finals March 27 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
In all, 399 games will be played over the four-week period.
Among the top-ranked teams in the latest Associated Press and coaches’ polls, Class 4A No. 1 defending state champion Bloomington South will face Columbus East in Sectional 14 at Columbus North. The Panthers have won 45 straight games dating back to the start of last season and need five more wins to tie the state record held by Lawrence North (2005-2006).
Elsewhere, No. 1 Danville will host Crawfordsville in the 3A Sectional 25 opener. In 2A, top-ranked Brownstown will take on West Washington in the Sectional 47 opening game at Paoli. And in Class A, No. 1 Bowman Academy drew LaCrosse in Sectional 49 at Morgan Township.
Among the other defending state champions …
3A Princeton is paired with Evansville Bosse in the first game of Sectional 32 at Boonville.
Two-time defending 2A champion Fort Wayne Luers with All-American Deshaun Thomas drew the bye in Sectional 38 at Bluffton and will face the Woodlan-Bluffton winner.
Last year’s Class A state champion, Jac-Cen-Del, is matched against Rising Sun in the first game of Sectional 60 at South Decatur.
Three schools will be making their first appearances in the 2010 state tournament. Herron of Indianapolis will compete in 2A Sectional 43 at Indianapolis Washington, Covenant Christian of DeMotte is assigned to 1A Sectional 52 at Tri-County, and Indianapolis Irvington will begin in 1A Sectional 58 at Edinburgh.
Tecumseh, in Class A, leads the state with 11 consecutive sectional championships, while 1a Lafayette Central Catholic has won eight straight. Harding and Washington, both in 3A, follow with five in a row.

BB: 4A #2 North Central deals 3A #1 Danville its first loss, 76-63

By Travis Miller
Contributing Writer
INDIANAPOLIS – The fans came expecting to see a show between a pair of Purdue recruits, and they got exactly that. Senior guard Terone Johnson of North Central (Indianapolis) and Danville senior center Travis Carroll will be teammates next season in West Lafayette, but they were opponents Feb. 20 as host North Central notched a tough 76-63 win over 3A No. 1 previously undefeated Danville.
That is not to take away from their teammates as these are two of the better teams in the state. Danville came in with Class 3A’s top ranking, while North Central trailed only Bloomington South in the 4A poll.
Johnson seemed to take umbrage with his team losing its 11-game winning streak Friday at Center Grove in a loss that may cost the Panthers the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference crown. The Panthers put up 52 points in the second half of the big MIC road game, but they couldn’t overcome a 20-6 lead by the Trojans after one period of play.
The 6’3″ Johnson responded by scoring a game-high 30 points and pulling down a team-high seven rebounds to power the Panthers (17-3) past Danville (18-1) and ruin its chance for an unblemished season.
“I’m really impressed by the way Terone works to get the ball in the open court,” the 6’10” Carroll said of his future teammate’s performance. “He was flashing up high or down low, and he has a good, quick jump to get above everyone.
“I’m not really surprised he came in the paint as much because he’s a big guy.”
Early on, this was the fast-paced game many people expected. Johnson scored 10 points in the first quarter alone, but Danville continued to work the ball inside to Carroll for points close to the basket.
The Warriors led 18-17 after one before the teams turned up the tempo even more.
North Central used its quickness to turn the tide in the second quarter. The Panthers forced 12 first-half turnovers by Danville and caused 15 for the game. They made the most of their larceny by scoring 22 points off them while Danville managed just five points off only five North Central turnovers.
“You can’t have any letdowns against a team like this,” said Danville coach Brian Barber. “You have to stay with them the whole game, and I feel like we did a good job of pushing through and doing that.
“They had a little more intensity, though in the third quarter, and that helped them build a lead a bit.”
The third quarter was indeed the big difference for Danville. After North Central led 40-39 at the half, the Panthers used an early 9-0 run to push the lead to 53-43 midway through the third. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had a pair of key baskets during the run while guard Ronnie Johnson added a big 3-pointer.
Danville was never able to get closer than five the rest of the way, and most of that was due to North Central’s change in offensive philosophy. After playing at a breakneck pace for three quarters and attacking the basket, the Panthers slowed things down with a 58-49 lead entering the final period.
This change allowed North Central to take its time to get a good shot and get to the foul line.
“We needed to get two stops there, and obviously we didn’t get them,” said Barber. “Because if we get a stop or two and capitalize at the other end, it’s a different game and you get them on their heels a bit.
“It’s a fragile thing. But they made the plays they needed to make, and I’ll give them credit.”
Another big factor in the fourth quarter came when Carroll was called for his fourth foul early in the period. He was forced to the bench for a key three-minute stretch with 6:31 left and was largely ineffective down the stretch because of his foul troubles.
Carroll finished with 25 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors.
Aside from Johnson and Carroll, there were several solid individual performances in this one. Forward Jordan Weidner had 19 points and eight rebounds for Danville, while Smith-Rivera – a 6’4″ guard in a linebacker’s body – finished with 19 points and Ronnie Johnson added 13 for the Panthers.
The box score:
Danville 18 21 10 14 63
North Central 17 23 18 18 76
Danville: Michael Humphrey 9, Tyler Hall 3, Kyle Mackey 6, Jordan Weidner 19, Travis Carroll 25, Luke Fields 0, Trent Shaffer 1, Austin Chalfant 0. Rebounds: 33 (Carroll 9). 3-pointers: 4 (Weidner 2, Humphrey 1, Mackey 1)
North Central: Ronnie Johnson 13, Patrick Ingram 0, Darius Latham 2, Terone Johnson 30, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera 19, Aaron Bluitt 7, Trip McFall 5, Micah Smith 0, Tim Bass 0, Dedric Griffin 0. Rebounds: 31 (T. Johnson 7), 3-pointers: 2 (Bluitt 1, R. Johnson 1)

BB: 3A #1 Danville cruises past Crawfordsville, 64-30

By John Groth
thepaper24-7.com
CRAWFORDSVILLE – Going up against the state’s top Class 3A team, Crawfordsville coach John Blackwell thought they needed a near-perfect game.
With too many first-half turnovers and quick shots, they didn’t come close.
CHECK THE GALLERY FOR ACTION PHOTOS FROM RYAN MANERS OF RUSTED ROOF PHOTOGRAPHY!!
Class 3A No. 1 Danville limited Crawfordsville to single digits in every quarter in the visiting Warriors’ 64-30 Friday night win, spoiling the Athenians’ Senior Night.
Danville (18-0, 7-0 SAC) finished off its conference season perfect, while Crawfordsville (10-8, 2-5 SAC) ended its league play on a three-game slide and suffered its fifth-straight loss overall.
The Athenians were held to their lowest point-total this season and haven’t finished with that low a score in nine years when they suffered an 84-29 loss to Lafayette Jeff in 2001.
“They’re very good,” Blackwell said. “We were playing uphill against those guys. If anybody beats them, I’ll be shocked if they come from behind to beat them.”
Danville senior and Purdue recruit Travis Carroll had a double-double, totaling game highs of 22 points (on 9-of-12 shooting) and 15 rebounds. Junior Tyler Hall added 14 points and senior Jordan Weidner finished with 12.
Leading just 12-7 after a slowed-down first quarter, the Warriors took control.
They went on an 8-1 run during the first four minutes of the second quarter, then closed it with five-straight points in the final 8.5 seconds. Carroll scored on a basket and a foul and Weidner scored a basket after a Crawfordsville turnover with one second left to give Danville a 32-14 halftime lead.
Danville forced Crawfordsville into nine first-half turnovers and held the Athenians to just 2-of-6 shooting in the second quarter. The Warriors limited the Athenians to seven points in each of the first three quarters before they scored nine in the fourth.
Warriors’ coach Brian Barber said opponents have tried playing a slower tempo on them a lot this season. Conference rival North Montgomery did it in its game against Danville, but Barber acknowledged his players knew how to handle it.
“We beared down, tried to stay in front of our guys, get good pressure and make [Crawfordsville] make quick decisions. They had some turnovers and we got baskets,” Barber said. “When teams hold the ball on you, you have to stay patient.”
Junior Trent Crabtree and sophomore Caleb Rasmussen led the Athenians with nine points each.
Crawfordsville struggled shooting all over. The Athenians hit just 12 of 47 field-goal attempts (25.5 percent), went 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) from three-point range and just 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
Life doesn’t get any easier either. The Athenians travel to Class 4A Zionsville (16-4) for a 7:30 p.m. game tonight.
“I told them to wake up in the morning and to be exciting about playing every game and having the opportunity to beat a really good team,” Blackwell said. “Our margin for error is just as small as [Friday] night.”
The box score:

W STATE FINALS: Match-by-match individual results with video

From ihsaa.org
Sean McMurray etched his name into state wrestling history Feb. 20 as the Portage senior won his third consecutive championship during the 72nd annual festivities at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
VIDEO IS FINALLY HERE AFTER A WEEK OF NOT BEING ABLE TO POST; PLUS, PICTURES FROM JEFF HEMMER!!!
McMurray (42-0) became the 24th individual to finish as a three-time state champion following a 9-0 major decision shutout over Indianapolis Cathedral’s Tyler Willis in the 160-pound final. McMurray was the 135 winner as a sophomore and won the 152 title last season, when he finished 49-0.
In addition to McMurray, four others – Union County’s Cody Phillips, Warren Central’s Brandon Wright, Crown Point’s Jason Tsirtsis, and Hobart’s Francisco Porras – each won their second state championship.
Phillips won his second consecutive at 103, besting Hanover Central sophomore Paul Petrov, 8-3. Phillips, just a sophomore, remained unbeaten for his career, posting a 45-0 mark this year following a 49-0 freshman campaign. It was Petrov’s first setback this year in 49 matches.
In a battle of former state champs, Wright (33-2) emerged the winner in taking a 9-1 major decision from Indian Creek’s Ethan Raley (37-2) in the 125 final. It was the second state championship for Wright, who also won the 112 crown as a sophomore while at Indianapolis Cathedral. (The senior also finished as the state runner-up during his freshman and junior years at Cathedral.) Wright became the second individual in state finals history to win state titles at two different schools.
Tsirtsis remained undefeated for his sophomore year (42-0), handing Yorktown sophomore Devon Jackson his first defeat (53-1) in a 4-0 overtime decision at 130. Tsirtsis won last year’s 125 title.
After winning the 130 state championship a year ago, Porras completed his senior season at 42-1 after taking a 5-1 decision from Leo senior Justin Beck (36-3) at 140. It was the third consecutive final match appearance for Porras, who finished as the 125 runner-up in 2008.
Five others also finished undefeated seasons – Carroll (Fort Wayne) senior Brock Norton (39-0 at 135), Crown Point junior Eric Roach (41-0 at 145), Anderson Highland senior Sam Bennett (42-0 at 152), Lowell senior Nathan Cleveland (42-0 at 215), and Yorktown senior Ross Janney (52-0 at heavyweight.
Princeton’s Drake Stein (44-2) pulled a surprise in upending defending champ Michael Duckworth (49-1), 4-1, in the 171 title match.
Crown Point and Warren Central each had two state champions on the evening: Tsirtsis and Roach for the Bulldogs and Wright and senior Michael Johnson-Jones (44-1 at 189) for the Warriors.
The weekend’s three-session event drew 25,811 fans.

Hobart’s Porras wins Mental Attitude Award
Following the state tournament, the IHSAA Executive Committee named Frankie Porras of Hobart as the recipient of the Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude Award. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to the school in his name.
The award was named in honor of the IHSAA’s fourth commissioner (1976-1983) in 1985. Recipients of the award must be nominated by their principal and coach and must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability in the sport.
Porras capped his senior year with his second state championship, winning the 140-pound state title and finishing with a career record of 146-12. Porras took home the title at 130 at last year’s state finals, and he was the runner-up at 125 as a sophomore. The talented athlete also played cornerback for Hobart’s football team throughout his four years.
Academically, Porras carries a 3.98 grade-point average and is ranked 19th in his class. The son of Francisco Jr. and Amparo Porras will wrestle at Purdue University in the fall, where he intends to major in computer science.
Finally, here is a class-by-class rundown from the 72nd state finals, courtesy of ihsaa.org and painstakingly typed out by yours truly for every opening-round, quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship match and most of the consolations by our type-happy managing editor, E. Shawn Aylsworth:

BB: 4A #1 Bloomington South handles Perry Meridian, 75-59

By Daniel Allar
Indiana University Student Journalist
NOBLESVILLE – The theme of Class 4A top-ranked Bloomington South’s Feb. 19 Conference Indiana-clinching home game against and Perry Meridian was simple: Whenever South’s starters were in, Perry Meridian couldn’t counter their explosive scoring.
All five of the Panthers’ starters scored in double figures, led by Indiana University commit Matt Carlino’s 15 points. South’s 44th consecutive win by a count of 75-59 wasn’t indicative of South’s dominance as 28th-year coach J. R. Holmes sat his starters for nearly the whole fourth quarter.
The two teams played a competitive first few minutes, and Bloomington South (18-0 overall, 7-0 in league play) only led 10-7 in the middle of the first quarter. Then the Panthers reeled off a 13-3 run – highlighted by the play of Carlino and Xavier commit Dee Davis – to finish the quarter with a 23-10 lead.
Perry Meridian (11-8, 1-5) battled to keep it close in the second quarter. Amir Blackshear hit two second-quarter 3-pointers for the Falcons, and guard Jazz Drane used his quickness to get to the bucket for seven first-half points.
But with 3:05 left in the half, Butler signee Erik Fromm slammed home an alley-oop from Davis. At halftime, South led 37-26.
Fromm also owned the first few minutes of the third quarter. With 4:22 left, he already had seven points in the stanza as South had pushed its lead to 21. The 6’9” Fromm even stepped out and drained a three during the stretch.
A Davis crossover drew a murmur from the crowd with a minute and a half left in the third. He changed directions so quickly that his defender leaped the other way, leaving Davis a clear path to the hoop to drive in and draw a foul.
After his two free throws and another South basket, the Panthers finished the third quarter ahead 64-40.
In the fourth, Perry Meridian cut into the margin final as Bloomington South delved deep into its bench. Blackshear forced a Panther timeout after a wide-open lane enabled him to dribble from the 3-point arc all the way in for a dunk.
Perry Meridian was paced by 12 points from junior Max Landis, while Blackshear and Drane each added 11.
Next up for Bloomington South, which could break Lawrence North’s all-time record of 50 consecutive victories in the upcoming regional or semistate, is a Feb. 20 home clash against Evansville Harrison (12-7). The Panthers finish their regular season Feb. 25 at home against Decatur Central (3-13).
South’s last loss was a shocking 33-30 defeat at the hands of East Central in the sectional opener two years ago.
Perry Meridian returns to action Saturday with a home game against Conference Indiana arch-rival Southport (2-14, 0-6) in a game rescheduled by the recent bevy of snow The Falcons wrap their regular season Feb. 23 at home against Indianapolis Tech (6-14).

GBB SECT. 27: 3A #1 Rushville handles 3A #3 Hamilton Heights, 76-69

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

SHELBYVILLE – It is always the little things. The truth of that philosophy was never clearer than in Class 3A top-ranked Rushville’s 76-69 victory Feb. 17 over Hamilton Heights in the oft-delayed Sectional 27 championship at Shelbyville.

Both teams got their high-octane transition games going. Both teams were alternately sizzling hot and frigidly cold from the field. At the end of the night, however, one number jumped from the stat sheet.

Rushville (22-2) had a total of 18 offensive rebounds, most garnered by the 5’10” front-court duo of senior Alexa Bess and junior Shelbie Justice. Not only was the Lions’ dominance on the glass – Rushville outrebounded Heights 44-26 overall – the deciding factor in the outcome, it was also the determining factor in how the game was played.

A high-scoring first period saw both teams show some nerves by being a little careless with the basketball. Both schools went on short runs, and the quarter ended with Rushville holding a 23-18 advantage.

At least six of the Lions’ points came on second-chance opportunities. It foreshadowed a contest in which the Huskies (20-2) would search desperately for the one spurt that could bring them back to even.

It nearly came, but Heights would fall short.

With 6:25 to play in the second stanza and Rushville up 25-21, Justice – who would eventually pour in a game-high 21 points – picked up her second foul and headed to the Lions’ bench. Hamilton Heights immediately took advantage of her absence to go on a 5-0 run and take its only lead of the game at 26-25.

But 10th-year coach Melissa Marlow’s Lions responded with a 9-0 run to go back up by eight. And you guessed it if you said four of those points came on putbacks.

Despite some outstanding perimeter shooting by the Huskies over the remainder of the quarter, Rushville headed to intermission with the same five-point lead it held at the end of one.

A 13-4 spurt by Rushville in the third quarter seemed to put the Lions in control. Once again, at least four of the points came on second chances. It also didn’t hurt that Hamilton Heights went through a frigid four and a half minutes from the field.

The Huskies could not hit a jump shot, a staple of their offensive attack. It was at that point that fourth-year Heights coach Kurt Ogden made an adjustment that nearly saved the game for the Huskies.

He put his team in a full denial press whenever they scored, a maneuver that instantly had an effect as the Huskies closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to make the score 57-47 at the end of three.

It was obvious to everyone in attendance that Rushville was tiring as the game moved into the fourth quarter, and nobody could blame them. The Lions had not even practiced since Saturday due to the heavy snows in the area.

Heights’ press began to have more and more effect. The Huskies went on an 8-0 run early in the period to cut the lead to 63-57. As the final eight minutes progressed, the Huskies began to heat up from the field.

A 3-pointer by 5’7” junior guard Jessica Carr cut the margin to 69-64 inside three minutes, and another by 5’9” junior guard Caitlin Bischoff narrowed it to 71-67 with less than 1:30 to play.

The little things then reared their head again. Rushville missed two free throws on its next trip, but the Lions attacked the offensive boards after the second miss and caused a jump ball, the possession arrow pointing in their favor.

The play effectively ended the game. Given a second chance, the Lions sent Morgan Herbert to the line, and the 5’6” senior guard calmly sank two charity tosses. The Huskies never challenged in the final seconds.

Justice was joined in double figures by 5’8” senior Kaleigh Andrews with 19 points, Herbert with 15, and Bess with 11. Hamilton Heights was led by a stellar 18-point effort from the hyper-kinetic Carr, while 5’7” junior Libby Ogden and 5’9” junior Maddie Herr each added 13 points and 5’5” freshman Dakota Weatherford had 10.

Rushville’s dominance on the offensive glass was not a by-product of the play. In interviews with Hoosier Authority after the game, both Marlow and her players acknowledged it was part of the game plan.

The Lions now face the daunting task of preparing for a talented Western Boone squad in the first game of the regional with only two days to accomplish it.

GBB SECT. 42: Knightstown nets first title in 30 years over Northeastern

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
MIDDLETOWN – Knightstown captured its first girls basketball postseason title since 1980 at Shenandoah Feb. 18 by holding off Northeastern, 52-50, for the Class 2A Sectional 42 championship.
The Panthers (12-11) rolled out to an early first-half lead, then fended off a furious rally by the Knights (15-7) behind 23 points from senior Danielle Altman. Knightstown will now have exactly one day to enjoy its first sectional championship in 30 years before tackling top-ranked and undefeated Winchester (23-0) in the Feb. 20 opening round of Regional 11 at Lawrence Central.
The winner will face either South Ripley (18-5) or four-time defending 2A state champion No. 9 Heritage Christian (14-9) in Saturday night’s title game. Be that Knightstown, the Panthers will do so after surviving an eight-team, snow-tattered sectional odyssey that lasted 10 days.
The Thursday title game was originally scheduled for five days earlier and was one of two to take place in snow-battered Indiana. Greensburg also defeated rival Batesville, 50-39, to capture the 3A Sectional 28 championship at Franklin County.
Altman, a 5’6” senior swingman, got the job done for ninth-year coach Dawn Basicker’s Panthers in both halves in the long-awaited finale. She scored 14 points in leading Knightstown to a 31-25 lead at the break, then converted a late-game layup off her steal of a Northeastern in-bounds pass that immediately followed a layin by teammate Kaelee Kuhn.
The four-point dagger that took all of about four seconds had turned a teetering one-point lead into a 50-45 advantage when a reeling Northeastern called timeout with 1:14 to play. The Knights cut the gap to one 16 seconds later on a 3-pointer from the left side by junior forward Kyley Nocton, but a turnover and air-ball three on their next two possessions sealed their fate.
Knightstown’s six-point halftime lead grew to nine on two occasions in the third quarter, but Northeastern rallied behind the dominant inside presence of junior forward Briana Jett. The 5’10” Jett tied Altman for game-high scoring honors with 23 points, several coming from the paint and the free throw line, as Northeastern climbed within 46-45 on a 3-pointer from the left elbow by senior Caitlin Burroughs.
But from the moment that shot found the net with 4:52 to play, neither team scored on the next 10 possessions – a span covering 3:31 – till Kuhn’s timely bunny off a loose ball preceded Altman’s timely larceny and layup.
