North-South split All-Star clash; Melloh named Miss Softball

By Will Willems
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Hamilton Southeastern senior
Morgan Melloh just rolled her head back in disbelief.

How could
this year
â??? one that ended in a perfect season and a state championship in
which she set the state record with 26 strikeouts and had the game-winning
double
â??? get any better?

How about
winning Miss Softball at the 2007 Indiana All-Star Classic held June 23 at Ben
Davis.

The Royals
ace capped off her tremendous senior campaign with a solid performance at the Indiana
Coaches of Girls Sports Associationsâ?? all-star doubleheader and was named Miss
Softball in between the two games.

â??It feels
so great,â? Melloh said. â??A perfect end to a perfect season.

â??Iâ??m just
very humbled right now.

Melloh
drove in the first run of Game 1 in the first inning to give her South team the
lead. A groundout by Pendleton
Heights
â?? Becca Butler then
drove in Arabiansâ?? teammate Chelsea Held for a 2-0 lead.

That was
all that Melloh and her fellow South pitchers would need.

After
yielding a leadoff walk to Churubuscoâ??s Marissa Troyer, Melloh retired the next
nine batters in order to finish her three innings of work. She had four
strikeouts.

The next
pitcher to come in was Erika Taylor of Boonville, and she was just as effective
as Melloh.

Taylor struggled at the start, loading
the bases in the fourth with just one out. But Held, playing catcher instead of
her usual centerfield position, picked a runner off second base before Taylor struck out Kristi
LaFree of Penn to end the threat.

Taylor would not yield another baserunner
in her next two innings.

Indianapolis
Scecinaâ??s Emily Wethington struck out the side in the seventh to cap the 2-0
shutout for the South.

â??It was
nice to play well in a game with so many good players,â? Melloh said. â??We knew
it was going to be hard to get a win.

An hour-long
rain delay pushed back the start of the second game, allowing the North to
regroup.

The score
stood at 0-0 in the third inning before the North finally was able to score its
first runs of the day.

Emily
Butler of Benton Central walked, then moved to second on a wild pitch by Floyd
Centralâ??s April Ehlers before a single by LaFree made it 1-0. Heather Swarts
from Mississinewa then drove in LaFree.

The South
scored once in the fourth inning on a single by Melloh, and the game was nearly
tied when Butler
lined a shot toward left field. But the line drive was snagged by the South third
baseman to end the threat.

The North
got an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double by Elkhart Memorialâ??s Tawny
Desimone off Kendra DeArk of Jeffersonville
to make the final margin 3-1.

The North
got solid pitching in Game 2 from Butler,
Ollmay Wilson (Cass), Dawn McClellan (Chesterton), and Danielle Campbell (South
Bend Riley). The foursome held the South to just the one run and three hits
while striking out 10.

Taylor was named the most valuable player
of the Classic by going 3 for 3 with a run scored in addition to her dominating
pitching performance.

â??It’s nice
to know I gave my best in my last high school event, the Boonville standout
said. â??It was such a relaxed environment, so it was really easy to play well.â?

But the
day still belonged to Melloh, the new Miss Softball.

â??I still am
just really surprised,â? Melloh said. â??I truly didnâ??t expect it.â?

Coach Pete
Iussig of Lowell
was named the 2007 coach of the year.

Indiana All-Stars: Hoosier boys and girls make it a sweep of Kentucky

By Chris May

Boys Basketball Coordinator

INDIANAPOLIS
â??? The Indiana All-Stars completed a summer sweep of the Kentucky
All-Stars June 23 at Conseco Fieldhouse, both boys and girls winning in
dominating fashion.

The Hoosier girls won 89-72, while the Hoosier boys were 104-87 winners.

The girls came back from a 12-point defecit to outscore Kentucky 55-28 in the second half for the win.

Indiana Miss Basketball Ta’Shia Phillips of Brebeuf, who once again battled foul trouble, scored 12 points â??? all in the second half â???
and ripped down 10 rebounds. The Hoosier squad was led by Munster’s Becca
Bruszewski’s 14 points, with South Bend St. Joseph’s Sydney Smallbone hitting for 13 and
Castle’s Jasmine Ussery recording 11 points and nine rebounds.

“I
think in the second half we really showed and played with a lot of
heart,” said Indiana girls coach Larry Pringle. “I’m very proud of
these kids; the past two weeks have been the best two weeks of
basketball in my life.

“They came out and took the challenge, and they got the job done. This was truly Indiana-type basketball.”

The win was Indiana’s fifth in a row in the series and the girls’ 25th in the last 31 meetings with Kentucky.

The
Indiana boys got 20 points from Mr. Basketball Eric Gordon of North
Central (Indianapolis) in a 104-87 victory in the nightcap.

Valparaiso’s
Scott Martin had the game’s lone double-double with 12 points and 10
rebounds, while Connersville’s Matt Howard added 12 and nine. Muncie
Central point guard Ben Botts scored 11 points.

The Hoosier guys
trailed 14-6 early before an 18-5 run propelled them toward a 16-point
halftime lead. They never faced trouble in the second half, coasting to
the 17-point victory.

“This wasn’t the prettiest win â??? especially when we started out down 0-7,” said Indiana coach Mike Miller. “But we fought back hard to gain control.

“Working
with these 14 young men the last two weeks has been a great experience.
I hope the Indiana fans appreciate the level of talent on this team.”

The boys’ win was Indiana’s seventh straight and their 14th in the last 18 meetings with Kentucky.
