Indiana All-Stars: Senior girls avenge loss, 91-81 winners over Juniors at New Castle

By Chris May
Electronic Media Coordinator

“I saw the Ta’Shia I
wanted to see tonight,” Indiana All-Star head coach Larry Pringle declared
after Tuesday nightâ??s 91-81 win over the Junior All-Stars at New Castle
Chrysler Fieldhouse.

He was referring to 2007 Indianapolis Star Miss Basketball Ta’Shia
Phillips, who went for 24 points and 10 rebounds as the All-Stars beat the
Juniors just two days after the Juniors’ double overtime win in West Lafayette.

In the battle of quickness
versus size, the seniors were able to use Phillipsâ?? size and strength to hold
off the speedy juniors in their third and final meeting this summer.

Outrebounding the juniors
59-31, outscoring them in the paint 53-30, and dominating second chance points
23-8, the senior All-Stars used their assets to their advantage at what could
have been re-titled â??The Worldâ??s Largest, Finest, and Hottest High School
Fieldhouse on a warm June evening.

â??Theyâ??re a lot quicker
than we are,â? noted Pringle. â??I was real
proud of our defense.

While team defense got credit,
Pringle also had a talk with his Miss Basketball leading into their game at New
Castle.

â??We talked about some
things,â? Pringle admitted. â??Basically,
itâ??s time she took over.â?

â??I said â??Youâ??ve got to
make plays â??? itâ??s time. Are you Miss
Basketball?â??â?

And Phillips responded
with two dozen points in as many minutes.

â??It was a challenge, not
just from him, but from myself, she said.

â??I have been playing
pretty well, but we just lost a game so we went inside where we knew we had a
better chance of getting an inside-out game going.

The juniors got an early
dose of the 6â??6â? Phillips as she scored nine of the All-Starsâ?? first 13 points
helping them to leads of 11-2 and 13-8.
Although the All-Stars hit a 20-4 run with 6:04 left in the first half and
held the juniors scoreless for over four minutes, the younger team had a run of
their own.

After trailing 33-18, the
juniors were able to get seven straight points out of Brittany Rayburn, Alex
Guyton, and Jordan Lewis to start a 17-7 run that got them within five before
baskets by Sabrina Johnson and a buzzer-beater three-pointer by hometown player
Corie West put the All-Stars back up by 10, 45-35, at the half.

The second half saw a
lead fluctuate between five and 13 points before the seniors put it away in the
final minutes.

Up 80-74 with 2:47 to
play, the All-Stars drowned the juniorsâ?? hopes with an 11-3 run that included
four All-Star field goals â??? two by Phillips â??? to none for the juniors. The juniorsâ?? last meaningful field goal of
the game occurred with 3:42 to go by Fort Wayne Bishop Luersâ?? MarKee Martin.

As is typically the case,
Phillips was treated very physically by her opponents.

â??I had people practically
hugging me down in the paint and Iâ??m like â??Ref, can we get a call?â??â?

â??He said â??Donâ??t worry
about itâ?? so I started pushing through, banging in there because I know Iâ??m a
little bit bigger than the other players and could establish some space.

In the process, Phillips
also drew one of the juniorsâ?? threats â??? post Alex Guyton â??? out of the game with
five fouls in 18 minutes.

Guyton was just one of
the junior starters to struggle.

The starting five â??? Bloomington
Northâ??s Guyton, Atticaâ??s Rayburn,
Danielle Havel of Carmel, Brianna Bass from North Central (Indianapolis), and
Lisa Samplawski of Portage â??? shot just nine-of-28 combined with Bass hitting
five of those for a team-high 14.

The junior bench did play
well, giving them 54 points off the pine.
Deja Mattox of Maconaquah scored 13, Greenfield-Centralâ??s Jordan Lewis
had 12, Amber Clark of Huntington North had 11 points and seven rebounds, and
MarKee Martin had 10 points, giving the juniors five players in double figure
scoring.

Atticaâ??s Brittany
Rayburn, who scored 27 points in the 95-87 double-OT June 19 victory, was just
two-of-11 for seven points.

â??I felt like it was key
that we took care of Brittany Rayburn tonight,â? Pringle said. â??She plays like the Gray girl (Kentucky Miss
Basketball Rebecca Gray) â??? I am so proud (of our effort).â?

As a team the juniors
were 29-of-71 (40.8 percent) and just five-of-24 (20.8 percent) behind the arc.

Outside of Phillipsâ??
24-10 night, three other All-Stars reached double figures. Fort Wayne Southâ??s Shaâ??la Jackson had a 13
point, five rebound, five assist, three steal night, while Sydney Smallbone
(South Bend St. Josephâ??s) scored 11 and Corie West had 10.

The All-Stars were
34-of-73 (46.6 percent) for the game and 17-of-33 (51.5 percent) in the second
half.

â??They
were not happy after losing to the juniors, they were embarrassed, Pringle
said of his teamâ??s motivation.

â??Our goal was to go 5-0,
so (after the Tuesday loss) I said â??Weâ??ve got to go 4-1.â?? They said â??Weâ??re going to get the job doneâ??
and they obviously did.

The Indiana All-Starsâ??
hectic two-week run concludes June 23 with another meeting with the Kentucky
All-Stars. Indiana was a 104-80 winner
June 16 and have now won four straight and 24 of the last 30 girls games.

Indiana All-Stars: Gordon-less Seniors trounce Juniors, 125-95

By Chris May
Boys Basketball Coordinator

With Mr. Basketball Eric Gordon or without him. The 2007 Indianapolis Star Indiana All-Stars have won both ways.

While Gordon was away from his teammates for a day, the All-Stars completed a three-game sweep of the Indiana Junior All-Stars at New Castle Chrysler Fieldhouse, 125-95 on June 21.

With the North Central (Indianapolis) graduate tending to what All-Star officials called â??academic and athletic commitments at Indiana University,â? the rest of this yearâ??s team found little trouble in sharing the ball, getting six players in double figures while steamrolling their younger opponents.

â??I thought we did a good job,â? said head coach Mike Miller. â??Heâ??s a great scorer, but we scored 125 points, so I didnâ??t think that was really an issue.â?

Between the slashing drives by Pikeâ??s Jeff Teague and East Chicago Centralâ??s Eâ??Twaun Moore, the on-target shooting of Fort Wayne Northâ??s Eshaunte Jones, Valparaisoâ??s Scott Martin, and Terre Haute Northâ??s Nate Blank, and the hustle of Connersvilleâ??s Matt Howard, the All-Stars unleashed offensive fireworks without Gordon, the stateâ??s leading scorer.

Despite falling down 15-6 early, the All-Stars were able to take the lead at the 11:51 mark of the first half and never look back.

The juniors got off to a quick start as Madison guard Logan Jones and New Castleâ??s Chase Stigall combined for 13 of their teamâ??s first 15 points, but the seniors were able to outrun, outrebound, and shoot better than their opponents.

Less than five minutes into the game, the All-Stars started a 16-2 spurt fueled mostly by Moore, JaJuan Johnson, and Martin that put them ahead for good.

Although they would never relinquish the lead, the All-Stars didnâ??t pull away in the first half. They led 52-39 at the half, with none of their players yet in double figures.

But an explosive second half â??? one in which the All-Stars scored 73 points â??? saw the seniors ahead by at least 12 at all times.

â??I thought it was a good collective effort,â? said Miller.

While the seniors played without their top scorer, the juniors were also playing without a pair of their best players. Washingtonâ??s 6â??11â? Tyler Zeller and guard Walter Offutt of Warren Central were attending a camp held by the NBA Players Association in Virginia.

Without Zeller, the juniors lacked a true big body, which allowed the All-Stars significant advantages on the glass (65-38), in second chance points (26-6), and especially in points in the paint (68-14).

And as the rebounding advantage grew larger, the seniors were able to push the ball adding to their fast break points (30-12) and display some athletic drives to the hoop.

â??Tonight we got up and down,â? said Pike graduate and leading scorer Jeff Teague.

â??Eric wasnâ??t here, so we had to pick up our scoring individually, but it was a fun game.â?

Teague delivered the nightâ??s biggest dunks, all coming late in the game with the win already within sight.

With a 20-point lead, Teague connected on three dunks in the final three minutes that wowed fans â??? or at least some of them.

â??(On the first one) there was a fan in the crowd who said â??Teague, thatâ??s all youâ??re gonna give me?â??â? the Wake Forest signee recalled.

â??So the next time on the fast break I tried to give him something a little better,â? said Teague who downed two dunks in the final 45 seconds, including an alley-oop from Munster point guard Mike Bizoukas.

Teague was nine-of-13 for 23 points, while Butler-bound Matt Howard posted the gameâ??s only double-double with 14 points, 16 rebounds, as well as four assists.

The All-Stars also had Eshaunte Jones (4-8, 13 points), Eâ??Twaun Moore (6-16, 12 points and nine rebounds), Scott Martin (5-9, 12 points), and Nate Blank (4-5, 12 points) score in double figures, as the team shot 53 percent from the field for the game and 59 percent in the gargantuan second half.

New Castle point guard Zach Hahn scored nine points playing at Chrysler Fieldhouse for a final time in his career.

The juniors did get five players in double figures, led by Madisonâ??s Logan Jones with 18. New Castleâ??s Chase Stigall hit for 15, Julius Mays of Marion scored 12, Muncie Centralâ??s John Peckinpaugh had 11, and Edgewood forward Garrett Butcher went for 10.

Despite the 30-point win, coach Mike Miller had already critiqued his teamâ??s weaknesses following the game.

â??We felt we didnâ??t defend nearly as well as we have the last two games. We didnâ??t contain the dribble and that set up some threes and some other things.â?

â??We hammered the offensive boards, but I was disappointed with our defensive rebounding and the way that we handled them defensively.â?

â??Weâ??ve been telling them all along if we play hard defensively and we play together on offense, weâ??ll be okay.â?

The All-Stars conclude their schedule hosting Kentucky June 23 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Indiana defeated Kentucky 97-79 on June 16 and have won six straight and 13 of the last 17 against them.

IHSAA approves fall sports tourney changes, announces Trester monument

In its final meeting of the 2006-07 school year, the Indiana High School
Athletic Associationâ??s Executive Committee took action on several items June
21, including approving plans for the state tournaments in the eight fall
sports as well as making an emergency amendment to Rule 9-10 of the IHSAA
By-Laws.

Changes to Rule 9-10 were unanimously approved by the group and more
definitively outline when girls may participate on boys teams with respect to
the regular season and the state tournament series, if their school doesnâ??t
offer a comparable program for girls. It also eliminates cases in which girls
in individual sports were able to double the amount of regular-season
experience by participating on their schoolâ??s boys team as well playing as
individuals in their own regular season before competing in the state
tournament. The rule goes into effect July 1.

The committee also approved new sectional alignments in cross country
and girls golf for the 2007 seasons.

Schools participating in the cross country sectionals will compete
against nearly the same schools as they do in the track & field sectionals
in the spring. At the same time, the committee approved advancing a sixth team
to the state finals from each of the four cross country semistates. The state
finals will now consist of 24 teams, instead of 20 as in previous years. The
committee unanimously approved in January an increase in the girls race
distance from 4,000 to 5,000 meters. That will go into effect for this fallâ??s
state tournament series.

The committee also affirmed a measure increasing the number of girls
golf sectionals from 21 to 28, bringing that tournament into line along with
the boys.

Schools will be notified of their new sectional assignments when minutes
from the meeting are e-mailed in the near future.

Also of note, Plymouth
principal **** Tobias, who recently announced his retirement from the school,
submitted his resignation from the IHSAA Board of Directors and Executive
Committee. His seat, representing District I, Class 3A, will be vacant until
the next election in December. The groupâ??s next meeting (the first for the
2007-08 school year) is scheduled for Aug. 6.

The IHSAA’s first commissioner will be honored on July 4 by a new state
historical marker.

The marker for Arthur L. Trester, who served as the Associationâ??s
commissioner from 1928 until his death in 1944, will be dedicated by the
Indiana Historical Bureau at the Interurban Reading Room in Amo, just two miles
west of Tresterâ??s birthplace in Pecksburg in Hendricks County.

Trester began his career in 1904 as a math teacher at Alexandria High School,
was elected to the IHSAAâ??s Board of Control in 1911, and was appointed
permanent secretary in 1913 before becoming commissioner. The mental attitude
award in the boys basketball state finals was named for Trester in 1945.
