5A #1 Center Grove 37, 5A #8 Ben Davis 7

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

GREENWOOD â??? Ben Davis senior Tandon Doss may
have entered the Class 5A eighth-ranked Giantsâ?? big Metropolitan
Interscholastic Conference clash with host Center Grove with the better rushing
numbers.

But it was
the 5A top-ranked Trojansâ?? three-headed, wing-T rushing attack that proved to
be far superior Sept. 28 in Center Groveâ??s 37-7 Homecoming waltz.

The
unbeaten Trojans (7-0, 5-0 in MIC play) outrushed Ben Davis 334-71, a stat that
included a combined 255 yards from senior Elliott Dutra (15 carries for 113
yards and a touchdown), junior Kyle Jones (13 carries, 82 yards, three TDs),
and junior Tanner Riley (six carries, 60 yards).

â??I canâ??t
say enough about our offensive line, said Jones, who had a relative off-night
after entering the contest as Center Groveâ??s leading rusher at 117 yards a game
yet still managed to score on runs of 44, seven, and one yards.

Echoed
first-year Ben Davis coach Mike Kirschner: â??They kicked out butts up front, and
if you can do that, you win.

From the
very start, it should be stated. The Trojans took the opening kickoff and
marched down the field before fumbling the ball just shy of finding paydirt
(or, pay Field Turf in the case of Center Grove). But the Trojans lit up the
scoreboard on the next play when Ben Davis junior quarterback Greg Rice was
swarmed in the end zone by a multitude of defenders, the sack putting the hosts
up 2-0.

Shades of
last yearâ??s 4-3 loss at Ben Davis, coach Eric Moore?

â??Last year
was embarrassing for us losing 4-3, and I think Iâ??ve been waiting all year for
this game, said the ninth-year Center Grove mentor, whose team had failed to
surpass seven points in five straight losses to the Giants.

It showed
in the quick-strike effort of his players, who now stand at 7-0 overall and 5-0
in sole possession of first place in the MIC, one game ahead of 5A No. 4 Carmel
and 5A No. 6 Warren Central. (The Trojans already own a two-overtime road win at
Carmel, and
they get the four-time defending state champions Warriors on the road in two
weeks.)

Center
Grove tallied twice more in the first quarter â??? the first one a 32-yard touchdown
run by sophomore split end Garrett Mack (five carries, 55 yards), the second on
a 44-yard scoring run by Jones â??? to take a 16-0 lead with 2:19 still to play in
the period.

The Giants
finally responded with a 14-play, 67-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard
quarterback sneak by Rice just 26.9 seconds ahead of halftime. Following an
offsides violation â??? one of 13 penalties
on the night for the mistake-prone Giants â??? Ben Davis appeared to have a shot
at getting within a touchdown after a successful onside kick.

But after
a pair of Center Grove penalties got the Giants a 1st and 5 at the
Trojansâ?? 44, three Rice passes fell incomplete. Thus, Center Grove entered
intermission with a 16-7 lead.

â??Weâ??ve
been fighting all year with cutting down the penalties, and itâ??s the same thing
every week,â? Kirschner said. â??Iâ??ve tried everything with â??em.

â??We didnâ??t
have a good week of practice. It will be interesting to see how we react (from
the lopsided loss).

Still in
the game with only a nine-point deficit, Ben Davis didnâ??t react very well in
the second half. Rice (12 of 17, 138 yards, one interception) fumbled on the
third play from scrimmage, and Center Grove junior linebacker Jon Rifkind
recovered at the Giantsâ?? 32.

Four plays
later, Jones had his second touchdown on a seven-yard run off left guard. Junior
Mike Woodâ??s third extra-point kick put the Trojans securely in command at 23-7
just 2:11 into the third quarter.

Then after
a Ben Davis punt, the Trojans removed all doubt by going on a 15-play, 86-yard
scoring drive that ****** more than six minutes off the clock. Using two
third-down conversions and another on 4th and 1, Center Grove went
up 30-7 on Dutraâ??s 11-yard jaunt off left guard.

The Giants
once more turned the ball over on another Rice fumble on the ensuing driveâ??s
second play. Center Grove junior strong safety Kevin Jones scooped up the loose
ball and returned it to the BD 5, and Kyle Jones picked up his third TD two
plays later going around right end from one yard out.

Ben Davis
tried repeatedly to get the multi-talented Doss open in space to turn him loose.
And the 6â??3â?, 181-pound senior did respond with 71 yards on eight receptions.

But the
stiff Center Grove defense limited him to just 10 carries and 16 rushing yards â???
115 below his average.

â??They came
after us with 100 percent of Doss, and if I had him I would, too, because heâ??s
a great player, Moore
said.

It should
be noted that there was so much Doss out of necessity for the less-than-100
percent Giants. Junior starting running back Miles Wright is done for the
second with a broken leg suffered in BDâ??s Week 2 loss at Penn, the same game in
which senior starting quarterback MarQueis Gray was lost to a broken hand.

â??I can say
I miss â??em a bunch, but weâ??ve been without them for five weeks,â? Kirschner
said. â??But we have no excuses â??? they outhit us and outhustled us.

â??They
execute the offense and donâ??t put themselves in a bad position.â?

Injuries
have struck Center Grove as well. Junior defensive end Keith Dietel was helped
off the field after a knee injury sustained n the second quarter, while junior
offensive tackle Paul Mize (shoulder, knee) and senior defensive tackle Jon Cox
both exited early with leg wounds.

Still, it
was an upbeat Moore who addressed his team in the south end zone after the game.

â??Seven-and-oh!â?
Moore said enthusiastically.
â??We ainâ??t never been 7-0 since Iâ??ve been here, and weâ??ve never beaten Ben Davis
at home.

Center
Grove will look to make it 8-0 (and 6-0 in the MIC) Oct. 5 when North Central
(Indianapolis) (3-4, 2-3) comes calling for the Trojansâ?? final home game of the
nine-week regular season. Ben Davis, meanwhile, will host Lawrence North (2-5,
1-4) next Friday.

STATE FINALS: #1 Martinsville wins 10th team title, Brebeuf's Hayashi takes medalist honors

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Nine-time state champion Martinsville rallied from a five-shot deficit after Round 1 with a sizzling score of 305 â??? second-best ever â??? on the second and final day of competition Sept. 29 at the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals. That effort has lifted the top-ranked Artesians (318-305â???623) to a 19-shot team victory and the state championship over runner-up No. 7 Hamilton Southeastern (323-319â???642).

First-day leader No. 10 Columbus North (313-331â???644) finished third, with No. 5 Noblesville (324-321â???645) fourth, No. 8 Roncalli (317-332â???649) fifth, and second-ranked Brebeuf (326-424â???650) sixth.

Martinsville, which also set the mark for second-best team score ever with its 623, thus assumes the early lead in the battle for the 3rd Annual HoosierAuthority.com All-Sports Trophy. Coach Sharon Mostâ??s Artesiansâ?? 10 titles are a state record, with North Central (Indianapolis) and Penn tied for second with four championships apiece.

Individually, Brebeuf sophomore Sophie Hayashi (73-73) and Carmel senior Milena Savich (71-75) stood tied for the lead at +2 146 after two rounds, so sudden death was in order.

On the deciding second playoff hole (par-4 No. 11), Savichâ??s tee shot found the trees and was not playable. Forced to take an unplayable lie, she went on to bogey the hole while
Hayashi drained a par putt for the crown.

Hayashi becomes the fourth-ever sophomore to win an individual title, putting her in the history books along with Carmelâ??s Martha Foyer (1979), Suzanne Noblett (1982) of Castle, and Martinsvilleâ??s Leigh Anne Hardin (1997). That trio all went on to garner a second individual crown in their careers.

Hayashi and Savich finished three shots better than the 149s carded by three third-place finishers: Indianapolis Cathedral senior Michelle Nash (71-78), sophomore Brianna Scheidler of Greensburg (73-76), and Yorktown senior Kelly Short (75-74). There also was a three-way tie for sixth one shot back at 150 between Marion senior Kristtini Cain (75-75), sophomore Taylor Gohn of Columbus North (72-78), and Hamilton Southeastern senior Jessica Pigati (77-73).

Evansville North freshman Natalie Schmett, meanwhile, was among three golfers tying for ninth after her 72-79 netted a 151. The other ninth-grade regional medalist, Trish Witherby of Richmond, finished in a tie for 19th place with a 77-79â???156.

Brebeufâ??s Tuohy named Mental Attitude Award winner
Megan Tuohy of Brebeuf was named winner of the 2007 Mental Attitude Award for Girls Golf. She becomes the second straight golfer from Brebeuf to receive the award, following in the footsteps of Aimee Neff.

Tuohyâ??s 85-81â???166 helped her team to its second straight Top 10 finish after being a part of the Bravesâ?? first state title team last year. The All-Marion County golfer has steered her team to the Marion County Tournament championship in all four of her years at Brebeuf. Tuohy excelled on the golf course this year, bringing an 18-hole average of 77.3 into the state finals.

Her season was highlighted when she carded an unheard-of 31 in a nine-hole match.

The senior class president at Brebeuf also founded the Catholic Student Union at the school. Tuohy has also been a part of Brebeufâ??s standout varsity and junior varsity girls tennis teams.

â??To say Megan is intellectually competent would be a gross understatement,â? said school LaTonya Turner, the schoolâ??s principal. â??Those who know Megan would tell you that sheâ??s a loving and compassionate individual.â?

Tuohy holds a 4.12 cumulative grade point average, earning her high honor roll recognition every semester. She has narrowed her college choices to Dartmouth, Brown, or Indiana, where she plans to study pre-med.

The daughter of Marita and Brian Tuohy also volunteers at St. Vincentâ??s Childrenâ??s Hospital, where she reads stories and plays games with the children. She also has been a camp counselor at Gnaw Bone for two years, is a member of the schoolâ??s Conservation Club, and has been involved with Model United Nations.

Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee present the award to the outstanding senior participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by her principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and athletic ability in girls golf.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAAâ??s corporate partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000 to Brebeuf in her name. Since 1989, more than $551,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.

Mike: Take a note, schools – Zionsville does football right!

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

ZIONSVILLE
â??? I went to a rather insignificant football game Sept. 28 between Zionsville
and Fishers. It was an entertaining game but by no means a thriller. When all
was said and done â??? I HAD A GREAT TIME! Why?

Because Zionsville High School knows how to put on a
football game.

Check out
this radical idea. The Eagles have a marching band â?¦ that really marches, and
it even does it before the game â??? on the field! People actually stood in the
stands just before the game because this band actually played the school fight
song.

Think
about that. A fight song played live by high school musicians who are actually
marching, or at least standing in formation on the field. They even had a
routine from the flag corp.

It almost
seems like, dare I say, the way it ought to be.

But the
Eagles donâ??t stop there. They actually announce starting lineups â??? in an
enthusiastic manner. As if that werenâ??t enough, this school even has cheerleaders
â??? who actually lead cheers!

To top it
all off, they even have an annoying public address announcer. Seriously, I say
that lovingly. His name is Jim Metzer, and he is everything you could ever want
in a PA announcer.

The home
fans are going to love him. The visiting fans are going to **** him. And, if
you are neutral, you are at least going to remember him. This guy is truly a
treasure.

The people
in the press box were friendly and helpful, and the facility was clean and
well-lighted. It was a good crowd, and a goodly number of the spectators were
little kids or junior high students.

A game in
Zionsville is still a happening, and it is a gratifying sight. My hat goes off
to athletic director Mark Preston and his staff. It also goes off to a music
sponsor who understands that one of the most valuable roles of a high school
band is to engender school spirit, and the best place to do that is at athletic
events.

Folks,
high school sports is and always has been the best value in athletic entertainment.
Unfortunately, some schools have forgotten there is more to the entertainment
than just the play on the field.

Zionsville
is to be complimented on remembering that the game is only part of the show.

4A #1 Cathedral 3, 4A #2 Muncie Central 1

By Will Willems
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Any volleyball fans in the Indianapolis
area missed out the night of Sept. 27 if they didnâ??t come to Cathedral High School.

With Class
4A No. 2 Muncie Central coming in to face the 4A No. 1 Fighting Irish, a
high-energy atmosphere ensued and ended with Cathedral holding on for a 25-19,
25-16, 23-25, 25-23 victory over the team the Irish defeated for last yearâ??s
state title.

â??Well,
that was a lot of fun!â? said Cathedral coach Jean Kesterson. â??We knew it was
going to be a battle â??? it always is.

â??We were
looking forward to this one on our schedule because we knew we were going to
bring it and Central was going to bring it, so it was going to be good
volleyball.

And bring
it Cathedral did. The Fighting Irish (21-2) took the first two games with
relative ease, never trailing in those games while cruising to victory.

It
definitely helps to have upperclassmen like 6â??5â? Christiana Gray, who
registered 11 kills in the first two games. She was assisted on all of them by
senior Jenna Queally, who controlled the offensive tempo with 21 assists over
those games.

But the
one thing that you can never do is rest on a team like Muncie Central. Despite
the knowledge it was coming, Cathedral ran into a buzz saw.

â??They
quickened their pace a little bit, which is how they beat us in the regular
season last year,â? Kesterson said. â??We knew they were going to do that.

â??They had
better passes and they could increase the pace, and we panicked a little bit in
Game 3.

Muncie
Central (18-3) used its new-found speed to twice take five-point leads, the
last of which was at 22-17. The Irish put up quite a battle, tying the game at
23 on a **** by Gray, but the Bearcats scored the final two points to score the
game win.

On to the
exciting Game 4. The Bearcats looked well on their way to forcing a fifth game,
taking a 14-5 lead right out of the gate.

Then
Queally stepped in to serve.

The senior
showed why she is a captain of the Irish, rattling off 12 straight points,
including three aces, to give Cathedral a three-point lead.

â??Sheâ??s a
great server, just incredible,â? Kesterson said. â??She has done that before
against New Castle and New Albany, so weâ??re never out of a game when
sheâ??s on the court.â?

Muncie
Central would not give up, retaking the lead at 22-20 on a **** from Kristina
Kerrigan. But the Irish followed suit, tying the score at 22 on a side out.
Muncie Central then took a 23-22 lead on a **** by Jamie Drummer.

But
Cathedral scored the next three points and ended it on a block by, who else,
Queally.

Gray finished
with 17 kills on the night, while Queally contributed 32 assists. Muncie
Central was led by Kerrigan and Kathyrn Smith, who each had seven kills.

Kesterson
said her team has formed a unique bond that will help them in the future.

â??They are
very special â??? they are just like sisters,â? Kesterson said. â??This is the closest
team I have ever coached.

â??They care
for each other, they support each other, and they just enjoy each otherâ??s
company.

If they continue
to play this well, the Irish will enjoy each otherâ??s company deep into the
playoffs.

And if Indiana volleyball fans
luck out, they will see these two teams battle again for the 4A state title.
