St. V Spirit of Sport Award (Male) winner: Z. Sprenkel

Zionsville soccer goalie Nathan Sprenkel was the named winner of the 2008 St. Vincent “Spirit of Sport” (Male) Award on July13. It is the highest award presented at the annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards.

Sprenkel was honored for his dogged return from injuries during his high school career and his performance on the soccer field. That performance has him headed to Duquesne University this fall. He was also cited for his work in the classroom and the community service he rendered in his four years at Zionsville.

Hoosier Authority spoke with Sprenkel shortly after the award, when he demonstrated the modesty that helped garner him the award. Click here to watch the interview, which was conducted by HoosierAuthority.com Executive Director Mike McGraw.

St. V Spirit of Sport Team of the Year winner: Zionsville girls tennis

The Zionsville girls tennis team obviously had a very good year on the courts as the Eagles advanced to the state finals this spring. They also had a very good season off the courts.

The team’s efforts on behalf of the Vera Bradley Foundation, a charity looking to cure ****** cancer, were widely publicized during the tennis campaign.

On July 13, the Zionsville girls received perhaps their most coveted reward for both of their successes. They were voted “Team of the Year” at the St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards. The honor to coach Pat Slama and her charges was bestowed for both their on-the-court success and the off-court humanitarian work.

Hoosier Authority had an opportunity to sit down with coach Slama before the awards banquet to talk about her team’s efforts – click here for that interview!

EDITORIAL: St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards should be applauded

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

As a reader of HoosierAuthority.com, you have undoubtedly noticed that we have given a LOT of play in recent weeks to the St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards that were held July 13 in Indianapolis. There is a reason for that.

These awards represent everything good about sport.

Let’s get a couple of things straight right off the bat. Yes, heartstring-tugging content gets read. Yes, St. Vincent Sports Medicine is a client of Hoosier Authority.

I can tell you without hesitation, however, that neither of those factors have anything to do with my claiming that these awards should be championed by every sports fan in Central Indiana.

We all love the games. We all get excited by the spectacular play or great athletic moment. In the end, though, it is the inner strength of the athlete that we all champion.

Is there anyone here who isn’t moved by a story of an athlete overcoming adversity? Don’t we all revere the coach whom we know cared about us as people more than he or she cared about wins and losses?

Well, those are the kind of things these awards are all about.

Hoosier Authority sat down with St. Vincent Sports Medicine Director Ralph Reiff, and it didn’t take long to see the sincerity of purpose behind this evening – click here to see that interview!

There is another world in sport that many fans never see. It is the world of agony, effort, and redemption that does not always show itself on Friday nights. Nonetheless, whether we realize it or not, it is what keeps us coming back.

These awards represent that world.

The Spirit of Sport Awards nearly tripled in attendance and participation in their second year. We believe they should grow far larger.

It is, after all, one of the highlight nights of the year.

St. V Spirit of Sport Integrity/Coach of the Year winner: M. Penrose

Lawrence North swimming coach Mike Penrose had an unexpected and wonderful end to the 2007-08 boys and girls seasons July 13. Penrose was named “Coach of the Year” at the second annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards.

These awards, unlike many others, are awarded not for the success of a program but rather for the values exhibited by a coach or athlete during his or her career. Penrose was nominated for the award by one of his graduating seniors. The nomination then went to a selection committee, which ultimately bestowed the award on the veteran Wildcat mentor.

After the ceremonies, Hoosier Authority had a chance to talk with coach Penrose – click here to see that interview!

St. V Spirit of Sport Comeback winners: J. Moheban/D. Bolden

It has been a long and difficult year for Lawrence North football player Joe Moheban. The Wildcat athlete started experiencing headaches during football season that progressively grew worse. He was eventually diagnosed with a brain tumor, and removal of the tumor was not an option.

For many athletes, this incredible setback would have meant the end to any athletic career. Not so for Moheban. Less than four months after surgery to drain fluid off the brain and being told he could no longer play football, Moheban returned to run track for Lawrence North.

On July 13, the story had an impressive ending. Moheban was honored for his determination and tenacity by being named as the “Comeback Athlete of the Year” at the second annual St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Awards. Moheban shared the honor with Zionsville football player Dylan Bolden, who sat down with Hoosier Authority for an interview (click here to see it!).

Congratulations, gentlemen!

St. Vincent Awards: Spirit of Sport Award Team of the Year nominees

The St. Vincent Sports Medicine’s “Spirit of Sport” Athletic Recognition Dinner 2008 will take place Sunday, July 13, and HoosierAuthority.com is your headquarters for all things leading up to the big event. There are seven categories of awards for athletes, teams, coaches, student managers, and student trainers based on their integrity, wisdom, community service, and gifts, both in the classroom and on the field.

One of three reports on Awards Day brings you the Spirit of Sport Team of the Year. This award recognizes a team of individuals who share and are committed to a single vision and who rely on each other on a day-to-day basis to further that vision. The list …

Guerin Catholic volleyball
In only its second year of varsity competition, this squad surpassed the 20-win mark on the season. Their success is built solidly on a foundation of team unity, purpose, and dedication. That foundation stretches past the court into the numerous community service projects the team undertakes in the off-season.

International boys soccer
This Gryphon squad made history by recording the school’s first IHSAA sectional title in any sport. Along the way, they distributed class and dignity that brought forth praise from competitors, officials, and fans alike.

Lawrence North volleyball
A group of unbelievably dedicated seniors led this squad in quest of LN’s first sectional title since 1979. It would require that they conquer mighty Indianapolis Cathedral along the way. To some, the dream was felled in one of the epic battles in Indiana volleyball history as Cathedral won a five-game, overtime match in the first round of sectional play. However, the dedication of the team and the energy they created in the Lawrence North community proved once again that the journey is of far more importance than the destination.

Pike football
The 2007 Red Devils recorded not only the school’s first sectional title, but they also added a regional and semistate championship along the way to the state finals. More than 100 young men brought pride and spirit back to a long-dormant football program.

Zionsville girls tennis
The Eagles showed that dedication to a purpose extends far past the field of competition. This remarkable squad not only advanced to the state title match, but the girls also led a highly publicized fundraising campaign to fight ****** cancer. The phrase “Pink with a Purpose” will serve for many years as a tribute to these Eagles.

Indianapolis Scecina football
The gridiron Crusaders have long been the public symbol of the pride and purpose of Scecina. The program is not only successful on the field but also has a history of producing great young men. The Crusaders regularly perform service projects for the eastside community and serve as role models for elementary students throughout the Catholic education system.

Park Tudor girls track & field
Four short years ago, a dying Park Tudor girls track program had just five members on the entire team. In 2008, 15 remarkable young women and a charismatic coach left the school with a far more positive feeling toward the number 5. It was the number next to Park Tudor’s name on the result sheet of the girls state finals.

Indianapolis Chatard girls cross country
Though they entered the postseason unranked, these Trojans lost their anonymity by running to a sixth-place finish in the girls cross country state finals. Their lofty accomplishments athletically were surpassed only by their academic performance. The Trojan team GPA was 4.059 on a 4.0 scale.

Lawrence Central boys soccer
The Bears’ postseason was cut short by upset, but that cannot dim the accomplishments of these talented young men. LC spent most of the season ranked No. 1 in Indiana and reached as high as third nationally.

Stay tuned to HoosierAuthority.com for a rundown of the night’s festivities and all the winners!

•    Kevin McCarthy, Zionsville
•    After three seasons as a member of the boys soccer team, Kevin changed his focus to cross country and track & field his senior season. The result was a berth in the boys track state finals in two events. His success is not surprising as this Eagle also carried a 3.8 GPA while participating in several service organizations.

•    Ben Wachtel, Westfield
•    It is widely known that Ben was a two-time state champion in both the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle while swimming at Westfield. What is not as commonly known is that he swam the finals of those events his senior season with a broken foot. That is not surprising. This Shamrock’s dedication to everything he does is legendary. Whether it is his effort in the classroom or in gathering and sending text books to a Kenyan elementary school, Ben only knows one way to perform – all out.

•    Nathan Sprenkel, Zionsville
•    A two-year starter on the Zionsville boys soccer team, Nathan has set numerous goalkeeping records at the school. He also carries a GPA in the top 10 percent of his class. Nathan has embraced his duties as a role model for upcoming Eagle athletes, often taking the time to speak before youth sports groups.

•    John Ockerson, Indianapolis Scecina
•    John graduated No. 2 in his class at Scecina. He did so while a four-year member of both the football and boys basketball programs. His maturity has been a building block for the entire Crusader athletic program, and he has been recognized numerous times as All-Conference for his exploits.

•    Daniel Kleinschmidt, Indianapolis Chatard
•    Daniel will be remembered as one of the legendary student athletes in the storied athletic history of Chatard. He was a member of the state championship football teams and the Trojan boys basketball program. In the classroom, he earned a 4.46 GPA. This extraordinary young man is also self taught on two musical instruments and is an accomplished composer.

•    Dylan Sorensen, Zionsville
•    Dylan was an All-State boys cross country performer at Zionsville and a state qualifier in track & field. Off the field, he was an active member of student council and the Eagle Leaders program.

•    Alex Kovach, Zionsville
•    Leadership by example is the hallmark of this young man. Alex has not only been a four-year athlete, but he compiled a 4.224 GPA in the classroom. He is an Eagle in more than one way, having earned the honor of Eagle Scout. His time at Zionsville has been marked by commitment to several community service projects.

•    Morgan Thune, Zionsville
•    Morgan was a four-year varsity cheerleader at Zionsville and a member of several athletic teams as well as many musical productions at the school. Morgan recently capped her high school career by earning a place on the Indiana University cheerleading squad.

•    Laura Chappell, Zionsville
•    This incoming senior has been an integral part in turning around a once-struggling volleyball program. Laura is not only a talented player, but she has instilled a work ethic and enthusiasm throughout the program. Her work in the classroom is no less focused. Laura is near the top of her class and serves as an excellent role model for aspiring Eagle athletes.

•    Lauren Ford, Pike
•    Only a sophomore this past season, Lauren became a leader on the Pike girls track team. Her high level of performance came from an understanding of the hard work necessary to achieve success. It is knowledge she quietly passed on to her teammates. They could take a lesson from her academic performance as well. Lauren has maintained a 4.28 GPA in her two years at Pike.

•    Danielle Hansen, Zionsville
•    For four years, opponents knew Danielle as the fierce competitor in the No. 1 singles slot for the highly successful Eagles’ tennis team. Within the halls of her own school, she was recognized as a young lady of dedication and social conscience. Danielle has an endless list of memberships in service organizations and fundraising projects. She has also maintained a 3.7 GPA and active participation in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

•    Kellie Coval, Zionsville

Among her social activities has been participation in the March For Life and the Catholic Heart Work camp.

•    Colleen Regan, Guerin Catholic
•    There is no part of life at Guerin Catholic that has not been touched by this incoming senior. The only junior to do so, Colleen served as a captain on the volleyball team. It was an honor bestowed upon her by her teammates. She is also a member of the school’s elite choir as well as several drama presentations. Through it all, she has been an active member in the Campus Ministry.

•    Katie Muskat, Indianapolis Chatard
•    This Trojan sprinter’s work ethic was so strong it led to the development of an off-season training program for the track team that had not existed prior to her arrival. It also led to a universal respect for Katie among teammates and opponents alike. She carried that work ethic into the classroom during her four years at Chatard. Katie graduated with a 4.2 GPA, mostly in advanced courses.
